The world of tea is highly complex, just like coffee or wine. There are various opinions out there about this machine. We all know Breville's quality, and that it's now BPA free; however, there are other opinions stating that the basket cover and lid are plastic. Is this a problem concerning health issues?
@shrumpkin Honestly, I'm not sure. I know that BPA is about keeping clear plastics clear and I don't know if we'll suddenly discover that there are nasty elements in these opaque plastics. Only time will tell, I guess; unfortunately, manufacturing has gone largely the way of plastics so it's difficult to find anything that doesn't have it as a component. - Kat
Does anybody know where I can find this at its lowest price???? I'm TRYING to actually surprise my mom for Christmas this year..... I'm shooting for a tear guys lol
Hey ,, I just purchased one at blooming dales dot com
if you spend 250 you get 50 off. so.. you get 20% pretty much.. Bloomingdales has it for 249.99. so you need to get something else so you can see the 50 off.. hope this help and Merry Christmas to you mom.. HAH..
i want one of these but i also hear that you have to wash it by hand because is not water or dishwasher friendly. and for the basket button im just curious dose it go all the way to the top then down or dose it stop just above the water level and dose it only go up once or several times. i just haven't seen a video of how that works,
@VickyTrace737 Yes, hand wash only. It goes all the way to the bottom (the basket) so the water level and how much it covers depends on how much water you put in to begin with. - Kat
this has to be the iphone under the teamakers, the utlimate gadget, all breville has to do is built in DLNA capabilities so you can control it frm a smartphone or get notified when your your tea is ready, why not invited someone per tweet or facebook. love that way tech will be going.
@proustie I am not sure; we didn't do a side by side. If anything, it provides you with a level of accuracy that you don't have with traditional steeping methods without putting a lot of effort into it, so that could be a benefit. It is likely you can achieve similar brews with both methods, just different levels of participation on your part :) - Kat
i think the only problem is that you have to put at least 500mL of water in (about 2 1/2 cups), which makes a lot of tea if you are making it for yourself
@atsharrock It actually takes less time than is recommended for a standard kettle brewing method for each of these teas. For example, the tea we used (a black tea) said to steep for 4 minutes, but the settings for black tea on this were just 3 minutes for 'strong'. I suspect it's because of the flat line brew temp -- you can brew it for less time because the temperature is not slowly decreasing (as it would once poured out from the kettle & into your mug). - Kat
I like that lowering and raising magnetic basket, that's cool. I would not, however, trust it with oolong. I still prefer the chinese gongfu method over any tea gadgets.
I bet it would make coffee too. If you put a french press grind in the basket, and time it correctly, it could infuse a basket of coffee. May hafta stir the grounds, though. ;)
@jdharding2 I tried it with coffee and it didn't work well -- I had to use a coarser than french press grind because of the size of the filter holes and it needed to steep a lot longer than I original set it for. Could mess around with a bit, I guess, and put a paper filter in there or something...but on its own, it was not coffee friendly :) - Kat
Went to Myers the other day, they had it on display, they retail for $299. the price was a touch to high. They did not have any for sale, it was only for promotional purposes for now. Depends how much interet they get from this product.
@Malangsufi Yeah, it's $249 on sale right now; I love it but I am not too sure that it is worth that price. Think it should be under $200, but since they have flown off the shelves and Breville has has problems keeping them in stock, guess I'm the only one who thinks that ;) - Kat
@antonc81 Yeah; and the type of tea will be a big component of that, as well. I wouldn't have taken this one much longer, personally, because it would have started to get more bitter. But you can set the temp & brew time for whatever you like, not just their recommended settings. - Kat
Great video. I live in Ireland. Most people stew their tea here until it's beyond drinkable and then pour large amounts of milk in it to make it drinkable again.
I like a lot of different kinds of tea, but without milk. :) Hell, I like all honest stuff with caffeine in it: be it tea coffee or dark chocolate. Just not the horrible tasting, sweet booster drinks. So, this machine would also double as a kettle and bring the water up to the right temperature for the Aeropress. :)
@digitaldolf Yes - I lived in Ireland, I know the tea of which you speak! :D I think this is a great double-duty, really like that you could use it for your other coffee preps, too. - Kat

Looks fun but the important question--for me at least--is whether the tea tastes better than it otherwise would.
