About unpronounced ("mispronounced") lyrics....Dwight took a cue from Mick Jagger....who took HIS cue from Fats Domino. According to Mick; Fats Domino once said that: "You should never sing the lyrics very clearly. Sort of slur them on purpose. It makes people listen more closely to your songs; and gets them hooked on your Music". "Fats" was right. Mick "got it". Dwight followed through. As Keith Richards once said: "The best thing you could say about a musician is: "He passed it on."
Listen to his accoustic cd 70 mins and non of it is boring. Not many people could do it.He is in a league of his own, love him. And he never sold out...as far as I know....
I have been a fan of Dwight since the early eighties, my kids don;t get it as they know me as a great Dylan fan. He has a voice that I find totally moving, same as Dylan did years ago. There is no argument over taste though. Dwight just always seems to deliver especially live, and I would love one of his jackets........
I think he changes the lyrics "just a bit" as an artist thing......lets not forget the original by Warren Zevon....Ill always think of Doyle Hargraves when I listen to Dwight!
From the description, I'm just curious: Has anyone ever questioned Dwight's vocal abilities? He's the king. Vocally as good as George Straight. Lyrically better than GS, considering GS doesn't write much. Dwight is a rare, top-notch talent, able to both write and perform music that pierces the soul.
Of course, my statements about writing are misplaced in this context since 'Carmelita' is a cover. You get my point though.
That's my fault probably, actually. Ever since I've been obsessed with Dwight, (since I was about 10) my sister hated country music, thought he was ugly, and couldn't stand his voice one bit. (She said he couldn't yodel when she heard his version of 'Cattle Call')
And yeah, your right about everything concerning Dwight, he's an amazing songwriter, singer, musician. It's just, from my very personal experience, some people don't see it that way AT ALL! :) I feel so bad for them!
@Crackhouts You're kidding, right? If I hadn't been listening to Warren Zevon and Linda Ronstadt's versions for the last 30+ years, I wouldn't know what he was singing about. He just makes noise that comes out his nose.
@Crackhouts I never questioned Dwight Yoakam's vocals nor songwriting as much as once. When Randy Travis was collecting one award after the other during the late 80's and early 90's,Dwight Yoakam wasn't nominated as much as one time. That's mostly because Dwight was and still is anti-Nashville.
he's probably just making the song his own like many artists do with cover tunes. just so its not a verbatim carbon copy of the original. gg allin took several verses out and changed some words in his version.
I got into DY after his perfomance as Doyle Hargrave in Slingblade. Though I can't say that he's made me any more a fan of Country music there's something to be said about a voice that sounds as effortless as Sam Cooke's when he sings.
Absolutely gorgeous, but it's odd that he reversed the verses. The original writer has the protagonist going through much more before he breaks down and goes to score dope. Dwight has him "playing solitaire with [his] pearl handled deck" (considering suicide) after he scores. It's MUCH more powerful the way Mr. Zevon originally wrote it. It's also about a writer originally, who pawns his Smith Corona typewriter. Linda Ronstadt changed it to a man of nondescript employment who pawns his pistol.
dwight please come to ct. we have two casinos. you get me thru each and every day.your talent comes thru in everything you do.acting, songwriting, but most of all it's thatspectacular voice that has been soothing me ,from the very beginging of your career,in myopinion you are the best singer un the world, thank you . please never stop singing and songwriting
What exactly does he sing at the end of the chorus? In the lyrics it says "on the outskirts of town" but here it sound more like "the outer skirts of town" or some like that. Can anyone help me out there? I'm not a native speaker in English here..
I think it might be....you know when he's live and doesn't have lyric book to read off then he's just kinda gotta go with the flow...no one will care if he misspeaks a bit!
@NickeyWhitfield Yeah, it's outskirts, but he takes a breath between the syllables, which is what makes it sound like outer ... In any case, the word, which means the edges of a place, comes from fashion, and meant the outermost part of a lady's garment, so it likely was a contraction of "outer skirt." English will confound you. Most of us forget how much of our everyday language is full of slang that can be baffling to the non-native speaker.
exquisite. i wish the sound quality was better, but understand this was a live performance and unprofessionally recorded, but i am not complaining, only wishing for more.

@Crackhouts True, but Dwight Yoakam knows another songwriter well when he sings his or her songs, particularly the late Warren Zevon in this case.

He isn't speaking english, he's speaking hillbilly twang. Which makes allowance for distorted vowels and bended words.

I'm pretty sure that the lyrics actually say on the outskirts of town, but in this version he might of misspoke and said the outer skirts of town.

@YoakamNotYoakum Yeah, I read the lyrics, too. Do you think it is mispronounced? Or maybe some stylistic element... sort of an artist kind of thing.

@gmohan2762 That's for the insight. I believe you're right. I hadn't considered that it might be some sort of contraction.

@NickeyWhitfield It's called phrasing... He takes licence from the regular pronunciation of a word. You hear it all the time.
