I saw him perform Stravinsky's Rite of Spring at Duke University performance hall, it was one of the most awe inspiring moments of my life, maybe even a sort of spiritual experience. Then after the show I got King, Anderson and Iverson to sign my copy of Blunt Object....fuckin SWEET
I can see how it's difficult for anybody who doesn't understand the music of the Bad Plus to get into this video. That said, once you get into it, you come to realize how truly mind boggling it is that anybody can actually do these things. I've had the privilege to see him live, and it blew me away. This man deserves much more credit than is given by the average Nickleback fan who says it "sounds bad"
It's called percussive melodies that he's making up on the spot. Some are brilliant because he plays with the time, some are brilliant because of the complexity of them and how they fit regardless
Wow.. Not my taste in drums at all, I like the more groovy and less creative stuff, but his dude is definetively made of music and have some insane skills
I'm not trying to grade the musician skill. What I'm getting at is that if you can't feel or hear the pulse in this solo, then your ears are not open enough. That's not Dave's fault. He's just doing what he does best.
I saw him do a clinic at MacPhail Center of Music in Minneapolis. He is one of the best musicians/drummers in the world. His entire approach to music is unreal, he is so creative, and understands jazz like no other.
well i saw this dude play with happy apple at the beachland ballroom in cleveland ohio about eight years ago, and i've attempted to play the drums ever since. i didnt start untill i was ninteen. still got a long way to go.
For those of you who are not drummers or percussionists in any matter of the word, it would be important for you and others who are ignorant on the fact, to take into consideration how incredibly difficult it is for a drummer to play out of time. Increasingly difficult is a drummer's ability to play in time with 3 limbs and out of time with the last. Or any variation of that. And when I say ignorant and you get offended then you don't know what the word means.
"it's hard" can't be your only argument. Don't get me wrong, I like his solo, but I couldn't care less how difficult or easy it is, because music can't be for musicians only. You have to hear and like it, not grade the musician skill!!
ya and i bet shes still better than you asshole. this is art, he doesnt follow i beat and it sounds amazing to someone with a musical bone in their body so obviously you are not one of those people
if anyone who says that this dude is god at drumming can tell me that they are truly saying this even after having heard of other drummers like jojo , dave, steve, gavin and vinnie then i will actually accept that opinion. but i am pretty sure that this will never happen, except if you are really desperately trying to be like an ossim jazz person by hearing this stuff.
I've seen Buddy, Cobham, Steve Smith, Elvin Jones, Rod Morgenstein, Bruford, Palmer, GInger Baker, and lots more--King must be seen live and he is brilliant-his syncopated bass drum beats along are a sight to behold as well as his 4-limbed independence. Dynamics? from the softest to the sounding like Bonham. One-handed rolls? Yep, without using the rim. Taste, innovation, and, btw, funny as hell. An absolute genius with chops to die for.
Just saw them last night in Chicago. (second time Ive seen them). I have to say that David King is the best drummer I've ever seen in person, and is definitely one of the top drummers out there right now. He is incredibly soulful, imaginative, and HIGHLY skilled. AWESOME!!!!!
Many people that have commented on this video have not seen the Bad+ live, or the stuff here on the Tube. King is a *very* accomplished drummer (i.e., a 7 pc kit), and has a true sense of beat. His jazz work is amazing. Please, before you make a simple comment, please understand that King and 'his' band are very talented. Here, in Nashville, we are BEGGING for this kind of interpretive music.
being a nashvillian, i couldnt agree more. people in any other metro area dont realize how lucky they they dont live in music city. bad plus and mmw are probably my most memorable shows. It seems the wooten brothers are our only hope.
Again, you are right. We got the Wootens here in Nashville, but after twenty or so shows, we still need *more*. I think we have some sort of Music Immigration Control here, as folks like Bruce Cockburn, Brad Mehldau, and The Bad Plus are not common enough here. We have some of the best studios in the world here, and most people record here, but few ever perform here. Hopefully with positive comments from viewers like yourself, Nashville will listen and respond to our needs. Keep screaming!
Everyone, please sop arguing. Let's just all be a happy family and agree that Dave King is absolutely amazing on the drums, but he wouldn't be anywhere without innovators like Elvin, Roach, Buddy etc. Why does everything have to turn into an argument, surely we can find some common ground.
anyone who either leaves a negative comment about king or tries to say that he's not incredible is either A: oblivious to sweetness of what he's doing due to video quality or inexperience. B: knows absolutely nothing about jazz. And if you're stupid enough to call him a chump and then list a number of drummers that are "better" than him judging by this SHITTY ASS video alone, than I feel very sorry for you that you are missing out on one of the best drummers i've ever heard in my life.
I don't think a lot of people realize what it is Dave's doing in this solo. Surely we can't dub him "the greatest drummer ever," but today that title really can't be pinned to anyone. But regardless, the different number of rhythms he's playing before he goes into the swinging jazz pattern is unbelievable. Literally every one of his limbs is playing a different rhythm and, in most cases, in different time signatures and over the bar.
greatest ever? this chump doesnt even come close. buddy rich, dave weckl, virgil donati, thomas lang, elvin jones, keith moon, max roach and such would kill him.
ooo. That's rough. Personally, they're both in my "top 5." Have you ever heard Bad Plus's version of "Immigrant Song"? Sick. Again, there's the influence factor. I'd think Bonham would have been influenced by King if he was alive today. King plays more notes and odd times while maintaining heavy grooves like Bonham do. I'd like to be able to play like King. Seems more limitless than Bonham. You?
Well, I would rather play like King because of all his crazy times. But in the talent spectrum, there about the same, but my personal opinion is that King has a more stylish and enjoyable sound.
Having the good fortune to see both of them play less than 5 feet from me, I'd have to say King would come out victorious. Of course, this is assuming the battle would be tomorrow. It would be easy to argue that there would be no King (and many other greats) if it weren't for the influence of Joe. Morello can still shock even Bozzio with his single stroke rolls. ;)
I need a good show to follow Martin Medeski and Wood,,,I think this is it
