I was one year old in 1986. I had no idea how much I would come to love my country, nor even any awareness of how lucky I was to be an American. Thank you for sharing this, I am honored to be able to watch.
My sister was in the Liberty Band! The original coverage had more shots of them, this has been remastered with the shots of the colorguard. . Cool she played on those Herald Trumpets and was a part of the HUGE 800 piece marching band that performed in the Meadowlands. And yes, this was transposed. The original was in D Major cause it was in E for trumpets and had some tough fingerings!
Lol that's same thing I thought when I heard the orchestrated version, but this is the first version he did it in I think and then wrote in a different key when he wrote it for Concert band
Haha, I am a horn player, and I've played this piece before, so it totally threw off my ear, which normally serves me pretty solidly. Thought I'd make the note. Very good performance though!! Kudos!
I am one of the fanfare trumpet players standing directly in front of John WIlliams on the podium! If you are wondering how this sounded so good on live TV which this is a video of, they played the studio recording over the sound system and we just played along softly. They tried to add the fanfare trumpets to the "mix" the night before but It could not work from a tech standpoint.
Does anyone have the Liberty Band VHS documentary tape of the Liberty Band band camp?
i was a dancer at the meadowlands and i have tried to find footage of this event for years. it was my first time in NYC and i auditioned with thousands for the celebration. we did a number with Liza Minelli...it was awesome!
WoW! I was a tuba player in this band and it's so cool to find this online! I still have all the VHS tapes, including the documentary that William Patterson College did.
Do you have any more of these videos? My VHS of these events went on to a better life, and I would love to see this again! I was in this band as well...I played the mellophone and it was such a great experience. Thanks!
I was sixteen as I sat in rapt attention in front of the TV. Already a HUGE John Williams fan, I had my panasonic portable tape deck resting on the floor in front of the television. The built-in mic caught all the glorious music for posterity. Now I can see it all again. The shot starting at 3:17 with the Twin Towers sweeping by in the background has tremendous meening to me now, for obvious reasons. This video leaves me welled up every time! Righteous. Thank YOU!!!!
That would be great! I was 23 at the time had my first apartment fresh out of college. Sicker than a dog that 4th of July - but remembered thinking this is going to be really cool so I slapped a tape in! Big part of my 4th of July celebration every year. Hope you had a great one!

I got the chance to meet John Williams at the event. All I can remember was thanking him for writing the "Indiana Jones" theme. I was in awe.

I'll try to find the Meadowlands show video of the marching band. I was a trumpet player in this video, and I'll always be 19 years old in it!
