Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. To my knowledge some T/A's came with a 403 Olds engine? Not just the 400 or 301 Pontiac motors. Have always loved these cars and the Z28's. GM/UAW family Local 659 and Grandfather one of the original Sit-Down strikers who laid the way for a lot of the benefits most Americans receive from there employers. Thank for post this video of one hell of a car!!
A 79 Trans Am SE did not have 6.6 liter printed on the shaker. It should be TA 6.6. This designated the Pontaic 400 engine. I don't know what you got there but is is not a SE.
Well Shane77TA with your 2 cents I guess you have about half a dozen like this then. This was sold , but I can tell you it was much nicer then most of the junk out there. I realize there were plenty of these made but finding a really nice one with originality is a little tougher then you make it sound. FYI they made a ton of '66 Mustangs but it still doesn't make finding a really nice one that easy.
how the hell do you know 403s were duds? i had a 79 with that motor and it was the most reliable car i ever had, never any trouble with it! yeah, the 2.73 gears were a little slow off the line, but you put 3.23s in and there ya go, you could also put in a cam and olds 350 heads really wake the 403 up! all in all a good engine and very buildable!
@TheMKEWERBY No Mike, I dont only like the Pontiac 400's, but they can be made to run alot better and cheaper than these olds motors. Plus outta the box the Olds motor was wayyyy under powered and any car person worth their salt will tell you the same.
@surf403 OK. But I don't Take my cars off road on the track so I don't need the extra power. I had a '79 301 auto. (I also don't like clutches) as the 400 had. Is that another reason you like them?
@TheMKEWERBY No, I dig the automatics too. Four speeds are fun, but anymore, I would be putting in a tko 5 speed. I am actually in the process of getting a 76 Trans am numbers matching 400 with an automatic.
@surf403 Can the 301's be made more powerful as easily? It would seem they could be, as that's what the turbo models were hooked to after the 400's and 403's were dropped.
@TheMKEWERBY To be honest with you, unless you are a purist, I would take the 301 out, and put in a small block chevy 350. You can get SOOOO MUCH power out of a 350 Chevy, and sooo cheap as well!!! As far as the 301 goes, any motor can be made more powerful, but I am positive you will be spending major coin compared to the chevy motor. Hope that helps:O)
@surf403 NO DAMN WAY!!! 301's or 400's are what these cars SHOULD have. Pretty much anything else is sacriligious. Just like any other paint job for '77-'81 would be. Maybe if it were a camaro I'd consider that motor, but for these cars, i think i'll stick with these motors or ANY PMD V-8. Furthermore, I don't even have that car anymore, as cops and some "freinds" legislated me out of business with it. I really miss it terribly. do you really believe a 350 crate motor would outperform a 400?
@TheMKEWERBY I have the original 301 in my 80 T/A and let me tell you, it has no power, engine is to small and the car is so heavy. I still would not change it becase this is the way she was made.. Keep it original
@odewepe Well, if you have one of those Olympian muscle cars, like an LS6 Chevelle, then I agree, stock is best. But when you get to the late 70s cars that have these sad wheezy smog motors, I see no harm in swapping in a Chevy 454, or even a built Pontiac or Olds 455.

Yeah, Baby, That's what I'm Talkin' About! Only thing is the t-tops. Don't like them. Otherwise though, this is what '79 TA' should be.

These were really sharp looking cars, but those olds 403 motors were duds! Very slow and low HP! They could be made fast however.

@surf403 You only like 400 four speeds. They're too much.
