I am so very glad some of this older stuff is coming out on YT. I'm so tired of hearing young no it all types disrespect Mr Clapton. This man left his blood and guts on the stage and strings. This performance proves the depth of his emotional connection. A man just can't lay his emotions on the line each and every night and for each and every performance...I for one am grateful that we caught some of the magic that is Clapton.
Damn... he really shines on this one. This is definitely mid/early 80's. If you listen to the Behind the Sun tour bootleg ('85) you'll kno what I mean.
I love it! This is one of the best versions of this song!! Eric's tone is fiery and sharp, he just about kills that Stratocaster! Just smokes on this on!!
Clapton is for me the master. He still got the same.I think every time when I listen to him that I'm a very luky guy because it's not a usuel thing for all people to appreciate what he does and what he is!
@presto69ful he is the white guy in the black mans world to bring the blues with all his soul and earn respect for it. i love him! he is just as skilled as anyone else out there.
Definately 85 era this recording is. Jamie oldaker on drums and sonds like duck dunn on bass. Eric didn't play or sound like this in the 70's. My particular favourite version of this is the one off "just one night" album. Nice to hear this recording taken off the mixing desk though with his guitar blasting out. Love it!
no CmMister99, really nope. Even his hand hits "fresher". Late 70 & 80s were less about passion of the hit (as here) and much more about the tone & letting himself go into melody risks. Flow, less expression. Also his solos were or bad or good. No middle mood for em. Here, you'll hear healthier person "in pain" of the blues: expression, sharp hit (too trebly for a drunk, no jucy mids) & etc.
Almost any element I take - guides off of 70s. Amp is very very probably Fender. Just listen. Stay lucky
To my ears (and they have MUCH Clapton experience here) I say this is CERTAINLY the late 70's, judging by the voice, the tone, the phrasing, AND the fact that the mid 80's onwards saw a very much of-the-time sound, with Phil Collins' production and drumming. 80's this AIN'T! Think I've found another fave. And it's Eric again.
@CallMeMister99 Not being at all argumentative here, but willing to put my money and agree with rmGuera on this... this is definitely mid to late 80s EC, his 70s Tulsa band sounded nothing like this, neither did his voice.,, the song itself is also phrased/arranged differently here... compare something like the 1977 Double Trouble from Old Grey Whistle, vs. any version from 1985ish.... in fact try the CAN 1985 link, 5th down from the right. You'll hear the similarity.
@aleester Well, I'm listening again, and sorry, but STILL to my ears, it doesn't sound like the EC I heard and saw several times in the UK in the late 80's - I think this COULD be seen as over-long, a little rambling and indulgenced - though not by me, I should add, and maybe not the sort of track and style he would have played for a UK audience. What do you think? Anyh00, aren't we lucky, to have so much gold, that we can actually quibble over it's performance date? Love EC, love Youtube!
great version....I love the version off of JUST ONE NIGHT..but this is awesome...ok ....lets finish up the debate??? what year??? I need to get this bootleg!
Most passionate version, I would say this one, the 2008 version with Steve Winwood in MSG, and the 1995 version on YouTube are the best versions I have heard on YouTube.
Amazing! Now you know why EC is rated so high, higher than SRV. Tracks like this show EC's influence on SRV's blues playing.
the most amazing piece of blues guitar playing i've ever heard. it's quite weird cause at times he sounds like SRV but he still keeps his slick smooth playing style. this is a good example of why EC is so highly rated as a guitarist.
Funny how everyone has a different idea of Clapton's playing during the decades, and the fiddles he was using. Petty point, really. Kinda fun to speculate, though.
this is NO '78 E.C. This is absolutely upper part of '80's Clap as least. Voice, tone, way of stulyzing phrases. Not '70's lads. Very possible that he's not even plugged in his Musicman amp. Most probably Fender Amp here (not sure tho, but still...). Nevertheless amazingly inspired.
@rmGuera I agree with you on the date.--Definitely the post '85 "Behind The Sun" period [probably late 80s ]--- I don't think he was playing or singing with this intensity in ' 78 ---- He could have ,, but it probably would have been non existent AT THAT TIME -- Great upload though --Thanks
@redgrapeskins Great post! The tone is definitely not the Fender-Lace Sensor sound of the late 1980s-1990s, it is a little like Blackie of the song on YouTube1977, and you can hear him use the tremelo, which was blocked on the later guitars. The playing style is intense, raw, yet very developed, I am not sure this is characteristic of how he sounded in 1978. I would place this in late 1970's- early 1980's, before the Phil Collins era. It sounds like he morphs into two guitar styles.
Brilliant - and I thought I'd heard all his best stuff. Not sure where Clapton's head was when he played this - not on this earth that's for sure. Thanks for posting it.

This is Blackie, fellas. Post 85 was Phil Collins, a retired Blackie, and heavily mic'd drums from Collins. Late 80s were not a high point.
