kushitani is a good leather and nice design,, but Kushitani Hamamatsu President Mr.Hizashi Kushitani is a member of international illegal drug trafficking syndicate organization.. and he is a damn dangerous complicated criminal..! he ruin peoples life..!
Broadywolf, I brought your brothers bike from his partner in about 1992, he was away with the navy at the time. Still have it, in bits, but hope to have it running again soon
@TheWesty68 - hey mate he'd be glad to know it's still around, even if it is in bits. :) was a seriously quick bike. think my memory of the races was a bit muddled though after speaking to him about it.
Rob Macelna on the Heron Suzuki RG500, Gardner on the NSR500 ( developed for Spencer-handled like a pig), Mal Campbell -NS500 Triple (Honda Japan sent the latest mods to Honda Australia for the series), Andrew Johnson -NR820 V4 4 stroke, Mike Dowson - TZ700. 3 clips of the 85 Swann Series are on Utube. You will see Gardner power sliding the NSR around the corner of the main straight. Dowson hot at the start and straights- ultimately, handling sucked. Mal C best rid - all over Gardner.
@torisydney Ol' Mal Campbell........ I thought that I was the only person on the planet that had the good grace to remembered him. He was a great rider. I'm also a bit of a Peter Radford fan.....Another one of the unsung blokes...... (He raced the V three, alongside Gardner, back in the day....)
@criticalmass181 do you remember the Castrol 6 hour. I seem to recall Hansford and Willing riding a Kawasaki MachIV and leading by a lap. They wore the rear tyre out , rules said the couldn't change it. Everyone else, who stood a chance, had transitioned to the Kawasaki 900. I wondered if the fix was in on this, Kawasaki would have had a real problem with the old bike beating the new model. Adams Bros were the sponsor and also introduced refidgerating the petrol (lousy mileage on the Mach IV)
ok, sorry to hijack this a bit. rang my brother, the bike in this, #1 is his bike but the year before he bought it. mike dowson is riding it for pittman yamaha in this clip. the following year it wore the #36 and led the surfers race before kevin Magee blasted past on a works bike...
my brother had a bike in that series ridden by a young guy called hamish mcnichol (iirc?). it actually led on the first lap at surfers paradise. i didn't think it was #1 so not sure if that is it in this clip?? he suffered mechanical problems in heat 2 and then crashed out of the series in round 2 at oran park...

@broadywolf yep #3 :) if my memory is correct... mal was riding the honda ns500 triple & wayne was on the newer nsr500 four.... great racing.. i was at surfer paradise raceway for it :D
Agree with all before. I was born Dec 1962, and I can only think of two times I have been frigtened watching live tv. Sepember 11 unfold, and watching Wayne put it sideways and smoke up the rear, out on the marbles under the bridge at Surfers. While the footage you see here is great, you don't get the best bits. Also check Gardners' wins at the Australian GP at Philip Island. The first was epic, but the second, when the fairing came lose and flapped around, and he still won! What a ride!
wally campbell was the man of this series,if i remember correctly he was riding the honda australia rs500 v3 up against gardner on the factory nsr,and won 2 of the 6 rounds the other win at oran park with one of the greatest rides you,ll ever see,the series also had a $50,000 bonus to any rider who won all six legs,so yes gardner was trying ,
do you remember a young guy riding a yamaha that crashed out at oran park?? that was my brother's bike and i am having trouble remembering the kids name?? i think it was hamish mcnichol??
WTF I can hear the stones with paint it black and Ruby tuesday, the beatles get back, Eric Clapton with Layla and Depeche Mode with I just can't get Enough.
It was Wally Campbell that really impressed that day. I really don't know why people still insist on saying Gardner "wasn't trying to win" and all that stuff. This is race 2 and Campbell was kicking himself at the end because had he won both races that day he'd have won the series. He was using a new front tyre and wasn't confident in it initially. He said he wished he'd pushed it harder in race one. Replaced injured Andrew Johnson on the Honda Australia bike I think if I have the right year ?
I remember watching it with my mates with everyone's jaws wide open in amazement. It's certainly the best demo of balls-out riding I've ever seen. Those power-slides were so awesome it was obvious he was putting on a demo rather than trying to win the race! I would love to have the video footage as you only get about 5 per cent of it here.
I remember watching this whole series when i was just a teenager.I specifically remember a wet race were gardner just pipped wally Campbell at the finish line, that race was so exciting. Thanks for the vid.
I was 2 years old in 85, but i swear i appreciate this as much as you lot! i'd love to see Pedrosa/Hayden ride anywhere near the limit on one of those evil, vicious beautiful bikes as Gardener et al
To put things into perspective, this was Gardner's first race ride on a V4 Honda. He had just completed a season with the NS three cylinder, and as they did in the old days, the Japanese factories would let loose their hardware in the off season, eg. Kevin Magee would get to ride a Yamaha GP bike before leaving Australia. Gardner got to ride a wicked NSR500 (of Freddie Spencer's, tell me if I'm wrong).
DUE TO YOUTUBE'S 500 CHAR LIMIT, LOOK FOR PART 2 SEPARATLELY.
I watched this race live, with Will Hagen - a pioneer of awareness of many forms of motor sport in Australia - commentating, and gardner, lap after lap, was just tossing this thing around, hanging out the back end under the bridge at I don't know what speed. Till this day, I have never seen an exhibition of rear wheel sliding - at speed - like Wayne Gardner did that day.
The clip doesn't capture what was happening, but he was smoking the tyre at, seriously, 150+ mph, at a conservative estimate. If anyone has more accurate data of speed under the bridge, I stand corrected. I really think it was more much than 150mph.
Wayne Gardner is a true pioneer, gutsy, and is just a man giving it a go. Hats off, Wayne.
mark, do you remember a bike leading (i think) heat 1 at surfers with a young guy on board?? my brother was running a bike, yamaha YZR750 (i think?) and will hagen actually talked about him on the coverage as he was in the navy still and letting guys ride the bike in the swann series and at bathurst etc...
Rob McElnea was the guy up front in this clip on the green Heron Suzuki, I assume RG500. TZ750's were still racing then, maybe it was Mike Dowson (guess).
yepp i remember Mcelnea. i think that might be my brother's bike at the start, #1?? will have to ring and ask him. it was mike dowson's bike that he rode for (i think) Pitt Yamaha . my brother bought it from them.
Apart from Wayne Gardner, if I remeber correctly, the number 3 guy on the NS500 was Mal Campbell.
LET ME REGISTER MY ADMIRATION RIGHT HERE:
MAL CAMPBELL IS A LEGEND.
I think Mal had an NS500 against Kevin Magee on a YZR500 (4-cylinder) at Oran Park in the wet, just bashing each other to the line, Wally (Mal) bouncing the front end to make it over the line. He won.
I was there that day, standing at Goodyear Corner. Disappointing to see Dowson go off right in front of us, but overjoyed that Campbell took it to the GP machines.
Nice to be reminded it was 1985 too, the years just blur nowadays.
The best part of this video is actually footage of the old Surfers Paradise track. Another classic lost to urban progress like Warrick Farm, Amaroo Park, Catalina Park, Longford & after 2008, Oran Park.
Come on then guys how many of you can name all the songs being played here. Growing up in the 80's Wayne Gardner was always one of my favorite riders, great guy!!
The best part of this video has been edited out,.the section under bridge when Wayne Gardner would have the NSR slidding side ways hard and smokin the tyres front and rear,.i've a copy of this.
Stupid bastard had already won the series... pushed himself so hard those last few races, the next year he was world champ :D
