  • Perfect music for a perfect scene! This is ART!

  • The most powerful scene of the entire movie.

  • He's relishing the chaos he's created. Thereby, this scene is incredibly appropriate, seeing as he's killed Rachel and, so he thinks, Harvey Dent.

  • anyone else wonder why they had to break the bat-signal? they coulda just took of the bat part. now they've destroyed a perfectly good piece of equipment...

  • soooo, how did everyone in the police station die except him and lau. cuz to me, i saw him standing there with smoke and he jiggles keys (or something) at lau in his cell. explain?

  • This moment consists of 3 scenes (Joker showing the keys to Lau, Gordon saying how the Jokers plan was to be caught, and this scene)

Joker is not driving the car, Lau is, while Joker hanging on to the car frame in the back. I have watched this many times on my bluray copy and you can actually see Lau's hand is struggling holding on to the inner frame of the car (where the seatbelt starts). The swerving of the car is a triumphant jesture of victory, which Joker fully inhales into himself.

  • This isn't just a movie. It's a piece of art that will pass the test of time. In 30 years this classic will be in "best-of" lists and regarded as an American masterwork, and Nolan will probably rank with the best directors of the 2000s.

  • Another example of how blurred silence can create an extremely powerful scene(the other being when Harvey wakes up after the burn).

  • he could have said: weeeeeeeeeeeeee and it would have fit the character

  • @DiadeAngelTV But theres something incredible about the silence of it all, I think that works better. Youll notice the sounds fade out to virtually nothing, not even the car sound, his music isnt playing, its just a show of his enjoyment at what he does

  • i think when the sound drowns out

it means he's at his most peaceful moments

    when creating chaos

  • Reminds me of 9/11, and that's never a good thing. A wonderful scene, however.

  • Who the fucks driving the car?

  • This scene is only ten seconds long, but it's so amazing♥

  • my favorite scene out of the whole movie! honestly so good!

  • Amazing scene and amazing movie, I love how Christopher Nolan implies that Harvey Dent and Batman are the same, but opposite, the two knights of Gotham City. Harvey is the white Knight because he's a real person without a mask who inspires Gotham by confronting evil, and Batman is the Dark Knight because he does the same, but has to wear a mask since no one would take Bruce Wayne seriously.

  • I remember the theater being completely silent during this scene. Almost creepy in a way.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this part was incredible. It's only a few seconds but it was so powerful ! this is REAL cinema.

  • This scene is honestly a master piece

  • what i love about the scene is the complete anarchy, i mean the joker in a police car just causing chaos

  • I can't stop playing this. lol

  • THIS NIGGA IS DRIVING OUT THE BACKSEAT LMFAO

  • Let's hope that Dark Knight Rises has a scene like this...where there are no sounds or music for 10 seconds and the scene speaks for itself.

  • Must be a woman driver.

  • and what's great is that dull ominous tone that fades in and drowns out all the noise...like you're suddenly in the Joker's little world of peace and quiet while the whole city is frantically chasing him...fucking brilliant

  • that's a psychopath basking in the beautiful chaos he created right there

  • @mongolenpup Exaclty!!! Well played!!!!

  • I think possibly the most genius aspect goes to the sound editor for dropping out the natural audio and fading in an ominous tone.

  • I got chills the first time I saw this part, just looked absolutely beautiful, you could loop this 10 more times and itd be perfect

  • I want a huge poster of that image.

  • @Oallright Me too......this scene is badass

  • who the hell is driving hes in the back seat

  • @metairie33 The driver was Random Goon #3

  • lol I remember everyone laughing in the theatre at this part

  • This is the scene Kevin was talking about on the Oscar!

  • this scene was genius

  • Wanna talk symbolism remember his quote "Im Dog chasing Car's, I Wound't know what do do with one if I caught it" Can anyone tell me what a Dog's favorite thing to do in a car is???

  • i remember watching this in the cinema, and you could of heard an ants fart when this scene was on, and the atmosphere was like.....electricity in the air. no one made a sound, no rustling of sweet wrappers, and no one dared to dip a hand in the popcorn bucket.

  • If I'm ever driving away from the police then I'm doing this

  • the driver was all over the road..

  • Seeing this IMAX scene at the IMAX was absolutely amazing

  • i actually go the chance to do this at work , everyone thought i was fucked up... but it was worth it!

  • I see this stuff all the time in oakland, L.A. and other ghettos. lol it's fucking scary when these types of people use the left turn lanes to go straight. XD

  • Like a BOSS

  • If I ever, EVER get the chance to do this I won't hesitate :)

  • who knew a scene with him sticking his head out a window could mean so much?! O_O Heath Ledger you are GOD! <3 R.I.P.

  • Reminds me of a teenager that just graduated, sticking his head out of the limo. It's a moment of twisted victory for him. He's on top of the world.

  • I think this scene shows the type of sick ,but complete freedom the Joker represents. Freedom from society, fear, responsibility, and of course the literal freedom from jail.

  • This scene had the most impact out of the whole movie. This scene is what gained my respect for the entire film. Damnit Mr. Ledger, you were such a damn good actor.

  • come on.. who cares who was driving? (Lau was)

this scene is so much more, it's a piece of art, to me this scene was the most powerful and amazing scene of them all

    iconic for sure, perfection

  • @magicprophecy bless this comment. it's my favorite scene...of all time...in any movie. this 10 seconds. pure perfection

  • @magicprophecy Oh no he wasn't driving? :( I thought the Joker was...

  • @magicprophecy Yes, definitely very powerful.

  • Great little scene.

How will Nolan top all this in TDKR??

  • It's so amazing how this 9 second scene became the most legendary in the whole film.. Nolan + Pfister + Ledger, increadible team

  • It's so amazing how this 9 second scene became the most legendary in the whole film.. Nolan + Pfister + Ledger

  • THANK YOU lol I loved this particular part thought it was amazing how the sounds just fade and the music provides the atmosphere for the scene and I couldn't find it on any other video lol.

  • Joker loves the feeling of the wind through his hair.

  • I was sitting in the theater the first time i watched this, then this particulair scene came on........ WOW it made the fantastic movie i was watching 10x better

  • a screen shot that will be remembered in cinema history for years to come. words can't describe the emotions heath put into this character. truly remarkable.

  • after seeing this i told myself joker now owns gotham.

  • As everyone has observed, he sticks his head out "like a dog chasing cars."

Here's another parallel though... notice how the colours of the cop car correspond to the colours of the Joker himself? He wears White makeup, Red Lipstick, has Black patches around his eyes and is wearing a Blue Shirt. The Police Cars also have these colours. The Joker is a perversion of a 'clown' whilst the GPD are (mostly) a perversion of an upstanding police force. In the end, they're both products of corruption.

  • @Darkhunt66 Very clever. I think the colours are just coincidence, but that's a really nice one.

  • @JokerDonny its not coincidence ... its art.. Movies do this a WHOLE lot.. ALL movies do this.. hidden blances and signs.. to make the thing look so natural.. you never nodice it.. the guy who pointed this out has potentual to make fantastic art.. Just a little something you should know. You learn something new every day

  • @JokerDonny Ahah... But in this high budget design department, it's NOT a coincidence!

  • @Darkhunt66

You can make any association you want. To take it further you can say that his makeup is the car colors. He himself is the vehicle in which corruption travels. Where it is a police officer or a citizen or the evil dark person you want him to be. Evil travels in many guises and after all, man is a corruptible being.

  • This scene reminds me of his quote about being "...a dog chasing cars." In this scene he's like one of those dogs that sticks its head out of a car window. Fantastic scene.

  • this single shot is just so amazing its like not even possible

  • is he sitting in the backseat?? I dont understand how that works

  • One of my favorite shots in the film. Pure brilliance. Symbolizes the victory of the Joker.

  • 3 people dont know how to put a smile on their face >:3

  • I want his lips on my p****

  • @TheQueenchica wow...lol ;)

  • I believe this could of been the original way he escaped at the end of the movie from the cops but hey we'll never know unless Christopher Nolan tells us other wise

  • That scene will be iconic.

  • No headshake???

  • I actually was quite mesmerized by this scene. Then I noticed my eyes watering up because of how incredible it was.

  • Watching this on the big screen, this short scene is the one that sticks in my mind above all others. I mentioned it to some of my friends afterwards, and they couldn't remember. I found this scene to be one of the most intimate scenes involving the joker. The silence was very powerful, especially considering what happened to the actor.

    Thanks for posting.

  • How is joker driving the car from the back seat?

  • @swamphawk22

What makes you think he's driving?

  • @swamphawk22

    ROFL hahaha

  • why is his hair all soaked? was he sweating a lot or something?

  • @FernieBarrios13 use your imagination....

  • @FernieBarrios13

yeah the whole idea with nolan films (see Following, Memento) is that several really smart ruthless characters are scheming against each other and you only get 2/3 of the picture. The rest is up to your imagination. Did X know Y at Z time? What resources did X have? This is left open, because it makes things more interesting. How the Joker accomplished what he did remains somewhat mysterious, though you can bet he exploited corruption.

  • That's, and I hate defending anything about Heath Ledger involving TDK because of obvious reasons, where the real magic of Joker in TDK shines I think. The idea is very well what is seen in the comics - the most authentic thing about Joker here is that Joker is a character that breaks the rules (not in the cinematic "anarchist" way, let's speak metaphorically and metaphysically). Joker always cheats death, and he...

  • always gets from A to B, where B ("Batman" lol) halts him from getting to C ("Chaos" if you must...ugh). Joker needs no explanation RIGHT after the bank robbery scene which is an example of how smart and coordinated he is despite his teeming spontaneity, Batman hasn't even figured him out until the end of the movie. Why don't we watch him escape this - because he's the JOKER.

  • Its the opposite of Batman, who can beat anyone or accomplish anything because he's the GADDAMN BATMAN, Joker can get out of ANYTHING.because he's THE GADDAMN JOKER. And that makes me love TDK and Joker, for that reference to the "Joker effect". Its one of Joker's best scenes from this point of view, its an alright way of showing him escaping from everything - sanity, cops, and even Batman.

  • bad for you then...:)))

  • ok....he was helped by Maroni's men....happy now?:)))

  • Actually, probably helped by the Chechen's men. He was the only mobster that remotely had any respect for the Joker, while Maroni and Gambol just laughed at him.

  • maybe it wasn't Lau....maybe it was one of the joker's man driving...you know he had a lot of cops under his command(Ramirez and so on....)...or Lau was too afraid to be killed by the Joker if he disobeyed him....there are multiple explications

  • Next time you try to kill a public servant, I suggest you buy American.

  • Permission to treat the witness as hostile, your honor.

  • You win counselor.

    It was me.

Lau driving the vehicle? He's a fall guy.

I'm the brains behind this whole organization!

  • LMAO...who else was driving then? Joker escapes from jail with Lau, we know that for sure. Joker isn't driving. You think he dialed a taxicab? LMAO.

  • I can't see if it waas Lau or not, but if he was driving it's a good bet Joker had him wired to a bomb or something to make him obey.

  • everything about this scene was great, the car swerving, the eerie silence, jokers head out the window. this was one of the IMAX scenes in the movie and it looked incredible in IMAX.

  • @DCComics35 yea it was ghastly awesome

  • creepy dude

  • my dog does that when im driving with him in the car :)

  • yeah and right through the MIDDLE of a huge downtown too... society builds all this shit up over hundreds of years, the efforts of thousands and thousands of engineers, construction workers, scientists, even (I know) lawyers and politicians... and here he is laughing at all of it, and no one stops him... and no one can stop him either.

  • i like the effect in this scene where they block out the sound in the backround kinda erie they were going for

  • There's something about that darkness, that ruthless and complete disregard for authority and order through destructive eroticism that touches us all. It is the side within each of us longing for out acceptance and embrace. This brief scene just so happens to touch that darkness perfectly. And with acceptance comes true Healing.

  • i fail to see how someone who can touch darkness perfectly, the ruthless and complete disregard for authority and order through destructive eroticism that touches us all, who has a side that is longing for acceptance and embrace, an acceptance that comes with true healing... can be my worst nightmare. you have to be gay dude.

  • what the heck does that even mean? and sense when has healing ever sprung from acceptance of the pervasive darkness in man's twisted logic?

  • @Brahmanfire You mean he's a : "Destroyer of Worlds"?

  • For only seconds, a powerful and mesmerizing scene....the Joker is still amazing to me and always will be...

  • Such a creepy but powerful scene...especially with the sinister music.

  • i think the reason why this short scene is so powerful is because of what it signifies. to me, the joker hanging out of the cop car symbolises rebellion against authority. and the car swerving left and right symbolises discord and chaos

  • - The Joker hangs out of the Police Car

    - The Joker gets out of the smashed truck

    - The Joker turns to unconscious Batman

    =

The Best Moments In The Movie... and...they're all are silent.

  • they could make a brilliant poster out of this - its beautifully shot.

  • Fantastic shot of Joker! Though it is very short, it is THE scene from the movie I remember the most:) The sound fades, he is hanging out the window, the dawn in the background, the different tones of blue and a menacingly sound is coming into the picture..great work:)

  • even if you were to go out and pretend to be the joker, people would just see you as a little kid dressing up as his favorite villian, who's messed up enough to kill people to fit the role.... and really, they'd be right.

  • People want to be like Tyler durden and the joker... well my whole life i devoted myself to keep away from it... hell u dont need to many things to be that way.

    1. Born slightly unstable

    2. Grow up in the worst manner.

    3. Have that final moment in ur life where u snap and kill any1 you can.

Try not to be it.. thats hard.

  • O.o

Not sure about wanting to be the joker unless I was acting him, but Tyler Durden rocked.

  • tyler durden was the all the way cool... joker is the all the way insane... completely reversing the hardwired idea of society and turning it into chaos... it turns out that he really is insane anyways so good comparison

  • Like this bit

    always makes my smile 8)

  • Easily one of my favorite scenes in the movie, just wish it was a tad longer....

  • the joker and tyler durden are both characters we would like to be but we just can't

  • GENIUS!! i don't know about the tyler durden part but the joker..

    pure GENIUS.. bravo my man....

  • whoa i thought i was the only one who wanted to be Tyler druden?

  • I adore this scene, showed exactly who had the authority in Gotham City at that point :]

  • joker iz the fuckin man

  • I love the way he shakes his head like a dog at the end of this scene XD.

  • lol

  • best scene ever

  • lets see how loyal a hungry dog really is

  • Funny. I remember that scene going on for longer.

  • BatKart: Joker Circuit

  • jst a thought......................ha ha hus driving? lol ha ha it weird at 1st i thought it was him den i looked ha ha it prob his henchmen ha ha lol i love the dark knightxxx

  • wow...check out my kart ...its going to be the BATMOBILE TUMBLER GO KART

  • Reckon those other squad cars behind him are in pursuit or just other stolen ones commandeered by his cronies?

  • I completely agree with Maximus. This ten seconds is my favorite part of the entire film.

  • Some of the best 10 seconds in a film ever!!

  • yeah that was badass in imax

  • truly amazing, this simple scene, almost soundless, completely embodies the psychotic personification of chaos that the Joker embodies

  • I loved this scene. Combined with the fact that the one chick got killed and Harvey got fried, it made that much more impact.

  • heath fuckin around in new york

  • doox420, it was chicago, gotham is chicago, get that right.

  • no its new york but dark knight was filmed in chicago btw chi town is lame and cold

  • chillssss

  • love love LOVE

  • The first time I went to see this in the cinema, when this scene came on it reminded me Heath Ledger had died =( because of the silence of it

  • I wonder how many teens did that after seeing the movie and driving home with their friends? Also, it seemed in the trailer that he was sticking out of the window a bit further.

  • what a stupid comment haha

  • Wow, you're 46? By your comment I thought you would be about 15.

  • it scares me when he shakes his hand

    omg i love it

  • This scene along with the Burning building immeditaley after is only about 15 seconds, but the imagery was just so powerful..quite Brilliant ..

  • Absolutely brilliant.

I get chills from watching this scene. That's how powerful it is. Nolan says more in this 10 second shot than other directors struggle to do in 2 hours.

  • @askweaves23 totally agree. the man is a visual master.

  • easily one of the best shots in the movie

  • I agree

  • This scene in the movie just complytley mesmoraises me

  • classic

  • the joker is my favorite,

the scenes with him are my favorite

  • try watching it without sound, makes it even better

  • brilliant scene

  • When he's in the police car it's an iconic scene, literally showing us just how awesome a villain the Joker truly is because he looks a mix of totally crazy and super cool during that scene.

The Joker has killed the Chief of Police (before Gordon), Gotham's top judge, Rachel (Batman's girl), destroyed Harvey Dent, Gotham's white knight and got Lao back from inside a prison full of cops.

In the movie when you think about the end results, the Joker definitely gets the better of Batman.

  • Wait a second. . . Why the hell is the car swerving like that? xD

  • maybe lau is driving or one of joker's many henchmen! lol

  • Maybe it's because police are chasin' him.

  • those aren't cops chasing him, they're his people swerving along with him.

  • No, its Jokers people.

  • fantastic scene...

  • This scene on the IMAX is like nothing else in the world!

  • I must agree....watching this scene unfold in IMAX the very first day the movie was released...I was like OMG! is this guy for real???That day was for surely the best day of 2008 for me!

  • varunwarrier, agreed.

  • @almostfamousss7 whats imax

  • fuck thats a sick scene..

  • he looks so amazing in this scene

i cant even speak when its on

    (L)

  • Only the Joker can do anything and make it cool. But I have to admit I actually prefer it when he does it on the first theatrical trailer, it is more wild because he is pushing himself much further out the car making it look much crazier and more Jokerish. But this version is still an insanely cool scene.
