  • Julie London was, is, and probably always will be my idea of the perfect woman.

  • Ernie is annoying.

  • Is anyone else turned on by her signature??

  • Ernie Kovacs always talked way too much whenever he was a panelist. I guess he really needed to draw attention to himself in order to feed his ego.

  • *Cue Foxey Lady by Jimi Hendrix*

  • That dress Julie is wearing is awesome!

  • One of our best!

  • I never saw Bennett host, strange to see him in John's chair.

  • 3 appearances? As far as I know, only 2 are here.

  • I suspect Cerf was Daly's choice for host but he's stiff and uncomfortable. Arlene Francis had hosted on radio and TV and should have done it here.

This is not the show for Ernie Kovacs. He's spending all his time trying to be funny or silly and not playing the game. The panel ends up running out of time because he's wasting it.

Cesar exudes class here and Julie London is stunning as always. And what a singer.

  • @jgbennie I'm not sure what to make of Ernie Kovacs. When he was a mystery guest, after a couple of questions, he tweaked Mr. Cerf's nose, then later on he blew cigar smoke into Ms. Kilgallen's face, which pretty much gave it away.

  • @jgbennie I read an interview with Bennett Cerf who said he was very uncomfortable being the guest host and said he wouldn't do it again. After this, John Daly tried to arrange his schedule so Eammon Andrews could guest host in his absence. After Daly quit his job at ABC News in November 1960, his availability wasn't a problem. In he early 60's. CBS said they could tape a few shows each season in advance to allow for vacations.

  • I like Bennett but nobody could say "Sign in please!" like John Daly.

  • take it from this greatest of fans of WHATS MY LINE TomKes, with 500 episodes in my collection, having known Daly, Cerf&Francis, knowing the producers wife very well, rest assure the 52 clip of Romero like 200 others is long lost but we got this greatest of gameshows to recall. too bad game show ch cant put the show back on for future generations to view. I just love this show.

  • Which producer are you referring to, Goodson or Todman?

If Goodson, which of his three wives did you know?

  • Is the rest of this episode available on YT? The only other clip I could find was the bit with Henry J. Kaiser.

  • wow, what a fox!

    I love julie london.

  • Julie London, effortlessly gorgeous, sexy, & classy. And oh could she sing. Wolfsky9

  • Julie London was freaking gorgeous, period.

  • aww he does such a wonderful job as host

  • Love Cesar Romero - so handsome and such class! Great video!

  • Ditto!!

There"s a WHAT'S MY LINE that features Cesar Romero as the mystery guest---Think it's from 1952---Wish someone would upload that one!!!

  • She's totally cool.

  • I would like to see John as a panelist. Must be so cool.

  • Sexist

  • Why not the men, too?

  • I think she played Nurse Dixie on Emerency in the 70's

  • You are correct...and her real-life husband, Bobby Troup, played Dr. Joe Early. Furthermore, Jack Webb, whose Mark VII studios produced Emergency, was her first husband.

  • sure did.

  • Juile London was married to Jack Webb at one time and they had two Daughters toghter. After thier divorce, she married Bobby Troup and they starred toghter in the '70's TV show "Emergency" whiched Jack Webb created.

  • BC and EK got under each others' skins that night. ( 0:17 ) ( 3:10 ) BC keeps giving EK looks that would kill at 50 paces. Apparently BC didn't appreciate surreal humor.

One of the joys of the mystery guest spot was misidentified gender questions. Note that BC gets rid of that possibility with a comment at ( 0:51 ).

  • GSN broadcast this episode on 24 Nov 2008. BC moderated this landmark broadcast with technical adequacy, but it is almost devoid of laughs. The audience laughed at DK when she missed a cue and at EK' Abraham Lincoln Stanley Steamer gags. The panel failed to identify a toothpick designer, Henry Kaiser, and singer Julie London.

BC and EK got under each others' skins that night. ( 0:17 3:10 ) BC keeps giving EK looks that would kill at 50 paces. Apparently BC didn't appreciate surreal humor.

  • Wow, she is just stunnig!!!

These type of gorgeous women we dont have novadays...and what a voise!

  • Yes I totally agree with you. Beauty with some class. Bennett Cerf was a really good guest host. He was very funny just like Mr. Daly and such a gentleman too.

  • A great singer, Julie off screen was devoted to her family, a voracious reader and a real jazz buff. She was indeed gorgeous and fabulously talented.

  • Ernie's a champion of one-liners. Cerf knew it, and smartly avoided a duel.

London? Her protective barriers remind me of the Berlin Wall. Not for me.

  • Hell on Earth would be to have been in front of Julie London -- blindfolded.

  • Julie's from my neck of he woods in California. Her name was Julie Peck. Nothing wrong with that name- Gregory did all right with it. But Julie London a nice name for a singer. And wasn't she beautiful in this clip? That old B&W TV didn't improve anybody's looks, y'know. So she must have been gorgeous.

  • lohan wishes she was that pretty

  • SHe isnt anywhere as pretty(Lohan that is), or talented.

  • sorry i meant to give u athumbs up!!! SORRY!!!!

  • cerf and kilgallen were the best

  • agreed

  • get your eye sight checked

  • okay well her looks REMIND me of lohan. Its not like she could be her tin or anything. I am a Julie London fan btw just wanted to clear that up. I didn't mean it as an insult

  • oh....ok sorry sometimes when it comes to ms.london I get defensive.

  • I think julie london has one of the most expressive/underrated voices of the jazz/traditional pop era.

  • i was agreeing that cerf and kilgallen were the best..stop leaving indiscriminate comments moron

  • Julie London

    Class Delivered

  • very true

  • she was very beautiful

  • Hwo is the second panelist?

Bennet couldn't replace Daly as host

  • The man between Dorothy and Arlene is Ernie Kovacs. The gentleman on the far right id Cesar Romero, the original and, IMHO, the quintessential Joker.

  • Prior to Miss London, industrialist Henry J. Kaiser was a mystery guest on this edition. And indeed, this was Bennett's only run as guest host; the only other subs for Mr. Daly were Clifton Fadiman and Eamonn Andrews. After 1959 when they started videotaping "WML?" episodes to air in advance in certain periods of the year, no more sub-hosts.

  • wow....she is super foxy here.

  • Julie London's recording of "Cry Me A Rover" will, I believe, remain the definitive version of that jazz standard.

Thank you for sharing this clip, not just for London's guest appearance, but also for a chance to see Bennett Cerf's role reversal from his usual postion on the panel.

  • Excuse me, that was supposed to have read "Cry Me A River," not "Rover" (although utilizing the misspelled word would perhaps be a nice rendition to sing for a deceased pet), which is the definitive version of that song, as recorded by Miss London.

  • if I'm not mistaken gymnastix..cry me a river was written for her

  • Italiabeefy, you are yet one more person who proves my point. I've always maintained that TV networks & home video production companies underestimate the intelligence & taste of the viewing audience, that we do know a class act when we see one! Just because a younger demographic wasn't born when a certain program was first broadcast doesn't mean they wouldn't still appreciate seeing it on TV or DVD!

  • They don't make women like that anymore. Julie was one classy, sexy babe.

  • Julie's name was really Julie Peck. What a beauty! She did a lot of cheesecake in her early career. Within a narrow, sultry range, a wonderful singer. Everyone in the clip is gone now... (sigh).

  • Julie London was also married to Bobby Troup who wrote "Route 66," "The Girl Can't Help It". Co-starred with Julie on "Emergency," and was the Jeep driver in "M*A*S*H" driving Hawkeye and Trapper John.

  • It's hard to decide who deserves the top spot as jazz singers, Julie London or Keely Smith.

  • He had a wry sense of humor in that series' first run; also was, like Aaron Spelling, Danny Thomas & Desi Arnaz, a prolific Hollywood businessman who created an empire, directing & producing a variety of dramatic programs of diverse subject matter, such as "Adam 12," "Chase" (about police special units), "Noah's Ark" (a '50s veterinary show that realistically portrayed an animal clinic, the first of its kind ) & "Project U.F.O." (which drew on real case files from the Air Force).

  • Webb wrongly gets the shaft for his second version of "Dragnet" which was anti-drug & heavy on the law & order, but even those shows had their merits & charm, co-starring the always excellent Harry Morgan as his partner. I strongly recommend you take a look at some episodes of the original "Dragnet" & rent "Pete Kelly's blues" for a better look at Webb.

  • I didn't like his stiff and stilted style and monotone voice, but that's a matter of personal taste. But as for Julie London, I have always loved that voice of hers and that stylish personna.

  • Julie London was married to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame.

  • Yeah, she married a shmuck.

  • Jack Webb was no schmuck, a talented man who himself loved jazz, produced & starred in the radio series & film about 1920s' jazz era called called "Pete Kelly's Blues," later a TV series for which Webb remained behind the camera.

  • His original "Dragnet" series, in its time, was ahead of its time (much like "Hill Street Blues" & "NYPD Blue" were later lauded) for portraying the routine work of policemen, showing it wasn't always just shoot 'em up & action-filled.

  • If he was such a schmuck, he was a pretty nice one, who as creator & producer of "Emergency" gave work to London (at that point his ex-wife) & her later husband Troup, from what I read at a point when London was grateful for the paycheck.

  • Julie London was one of my idols...and WML? has to be the best panel show of all time. Thanks for the clip!

  • "Florence Foster Jenkins or Howard Hughes"

    Great!

  • Actually, in all Miss London's mystery guest appearances on "WML?" (this plus two more, in 1959 and 1961), she stumped the panel.

  • i love the old what's my line shows on GSN i was not born when it was on ..but i love the panel from then..all so great!

  • Totally cool! Julie London was and always will be awesome!!

Pure classic TV! Thanks for this!

  • Is that Ceaser Romero in the panel?

  • Yes, that was Ceaser on the panel. I have seen this eposode once and I wonderered if the whole eposode is on You Tube.

  • Julie London was such a great talent as an actress and

singer. It was fun to see Bennett on the other side of

    the panel.
