The ROK Army still uses these bad boy's. We had to qualify with the 50 cal. and I was picked for road gaurd duty so the Korean Nationals didn't drive onto Nightmare range and get massacred in thier Kia. My NCO and I look up to this unique sound, there were 6 ROK Army bells overhead. It was really cool!!! I was proud to have served with the ROKs. DAMN TOUGH SOLDIERS!!! ROK ARMY TIGER DIVISION HOOAH!!!

The RNZAF take 5 troops with packs or 7 in light order. 13 people at most including pilots, 2 crewman and 9 passangers with no equipment. Unless we fly midget hueys they're full of crap. Check the RZNAF website, they don't take 14 troops.

@jvondougy, a UH-1N Huey can, it has a extended passenger compartment which gives more space towards troops. The New Zealand Air Force only has UH-1H which is just a normal Huey but with better engines, and the UH-1D which basically a normal Huey but has seats for combat troops.

I was a UH-1 Crewchief in the US Army for 10 years. I flew on several models, EH-1H, UH-1H, and the UH-1V or MEDEVAC model during the first Gulf War. The UH-1 rotor system is rated at 6400-6600 RPM and the reason the rotor blades making the "whop-whop" or popping sound is due to the speed of the airflow over the leading edge and outer area of the blades. The speed of the blades are literally traveling at the speed of sound. This phenomenon is more pronounced in the 2 bladed Huey than the 4.

Just wanted to respond to a few other comments I read here: There was a Gunship version used in Vietnam that used heavier weapons like air-ground rockets, grenade launchers, and mini-gun racks.. but most UH-1's were used for troop and cargo transport and armed with 2 M-60 machine-guns.. the UH-1's replacement, the UH-60 Blackhawk can actually carry more troops and armament than the Huey ever could simply due to it's performance specs.. it's stronger and faster.. but I still love my Huey's!

Ive been to the philippines and your defence force is so out-dated its almost non-existent. you have Hueys alright, but theyre US surplus old hueys probably used in vietnam back in the 1960's, all of which could crash down any minute due to old age, and the bigger joke is that you have no more than 8 units in service, youre attack planes are from World War 2 and you have no tanks, only several armoured personnel carriers. your government is too busy corrupting money to upgrade its defence force

by the way, not a lot of hueys coming out anymore. i think the national guard and small marine units are only the ones still using hueys. Hueys are almost PHASED OUT and in some countries, only assume a supporting role. its pretty much old technology, but for a country whose air force consist only of about a dozen world war 2 propeller planes, i guess your old hueys are gonna stay in service til they all crash.

My advice? for a not so well off country? STOP BUYING OLD, 2nd HAND/SURPLUS TECHNOLOGY FROM THE AMERICANS. LOOK TO THE RUSSIANS INSTEAD, they wont rip you off. the russians can sell you Tougher, newer and more lethal choppers and tanks far cheaper than what youre paying for old and used USA Hueys. Russian-built planes, tanks and choppers are tough as anvils, theyre low maintenance and a lot less expensive. you dont have to get their top-of-the-line technology, their entry level offerings will do
