You're right - they thought it would be funny because of how much discomfort the characters are in, or to use the writer's phrase "a very difficult and unpleasant experience". That's what I wrote. As a gay man I wouldn't find a fake kiss from a woman to be "a very difficult and unpleasant experience." It is only because the writer, characters and audience think that men kissing is 'unpleasant' / 'discomfiting' that this scene is regarded as funny. Without that element it wouldn't work.
