Not sure if it's true or not but I heard my Grandfather wrote the original version of this song but he didn't get it copywritten and then some years after he died, somehow, John Denver got a hold of it, so now it's considered his song.

@machesterman83 The way they've been doing it is perfect, with Spike singing. They didn't want a full on punk vocal for these songs. The instruments cover that. And Spike is hilarious at the ends of some of the songs, with the repeated "Yeah!" yells, especially on the very first album.
