  • 1:45-2:14 does he use his fingers or pick?

  • @culayta fingers

  • @culayta FINGERS!!!!

  • @culayta Toes

  • What kind of pedal does he use in the intro?

  • @culayta The intro as in the chords? That's an organ through James Amps

  • @AttitudeCastle No, that's actually the bass played through an octave shifter, envelope filter, and a distortion wah.

  • @AttitudeCastle that's not an organ, it is Cliff playing bass.

  • 4 people must die

  • 4 strings are just not enough for this motherfucker!!!!!!!!!!

    RIP CLIFFORD LEE BURTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Me arridillo para mandar mis plegarias a Cliff..TE EXTRAÑAMOS!!! D:

  • i have been playing the song completely different to this, i swore mine sounded right

  • everyone keeps comparing god and cliff. sure hes great but not as great as cliff

  • TURN IT UP!!!!!!!

  • i want this song at my funeral !! buried with my guitar !

  • anesthesia :D

  • Cliff was incredible. I don't know if you guys like black metal but you should check out Necromantia's 1995 Scarlet Evil Witching Black. They play only with bass guitars. It's pretty cool

  • @malteadotas4 Wow really?

  • @bankaibuddy15 yeah look for it on youtube. Bass, drums, some acoustic guitars and some solos, but the main riffing and melodies are 8 string bass

  • @malteadotas4 Cool. Thanks.

  • genius.

  • Once i got to 4:00, I had to clean the screen so I could read what I was writing.

  • 3 peoples are deaf,let´s kill them ;-)

  • @imandre98 Kill 'Em All!

  • @darkXXatena i´m sorry,i forgot the last wor

  • thats my porno o.o

  • It's so sad that most of Cliff incredible bass work is mostly hidden under the guitar fury of James and Kirk, and the parts you can hear are often mistaken for guitar... But finally, here you can hear Cliff performing his miracles solo. Thanks for the upload.

  • Holy shit I thought the riff starting at 6:37 was Kirk all this time damn that bass sounds king. Cliff is the reason I starting playing bass.8:05, 8:09,8:13 cant hardly hear those riffs on studio version sounds good.RIP Cliff!

  • @TheHoby34 ...I am not even a bass player and i knew that..but i was listening to Metallica way back, twenty years ago.so i always know when he was playing the parts cause his signature Wahh,,going in to the solos

  • Cliff Burton is one for the main reasons why I want to play the bass.

  • I absolutely fucking LOVE Cliff Burton. It would take an immeasurable amount of time to learn this work of art, I'm still trying, but only getting it off basically. He is definitely the person who should be idolized by bassists everywhere, he was, is, and always will be, a bass god.

  • @unforgeti Let me guess...without doing that i guess its justin beiber? wow that is funny

  • opening riff and bass sound are amazing - thats a distorted leslie i reckon

  • @kidrocker1996 ...litte boy

  • Where is this recording from? Can i buy it somewhere

  • @triplenippel123 I think it's from Guitar Hero Metallica.

  • @triplenippel123 you can just download it from youtube if you are using firefox using greasemonkey

  • @1215912159 If you enjoy listening to crappy compressed 128kbit/s mp3s.. go on, i dont

  • @triplenippel123 it actually isnt bad and i was just trying to help. if you enjoy paying for bass tracks that are readily available for download then be my guest

  • how having the sound of his bass during the interlude 3min58 to 6min 22???

  • How the fuck he plays that solo WITH IS FINGERS??!!

  • Cliff Burton ,Steve Harris, And John Entwhiste 3 greatest ever

  • How come most people dont play BASS like that ?6:37

  • @slaughter69corpse thats what guitars are for...the bass just holds the beat together so most of the time the bass and drums play along really good to hold the beat down

  • @slaughter69corpse Because most people are not Cliff :D

  • @slaughter69corpse Because people don'\ use versatility to their advantage?

  • Also 6:37. The bass solo is an auditory blowjob.

  • September 27th. The day he was taken away from us. Your music remains. RIP Cliff Burton \m/

  • If someone told me Cliff played all the instruments in this song, I wouldn't have a hard time believing them. Such an amazing guy.

  • @ridethelapras

    he wrote some guitar

  • I came at 5:02 so hard.

So fucking hard. Nobody can play this shit except Cliff

  • Wow, Cliff Burton is the best metal bass player I've ever heard playing and I've heard a lot. My music idol no hesitation. Thanks for all these awesome bass shreds with \M/etallica Cliff, specially Orion and Anesthesia--Pulling Teeth. Enough said.

  • i watched a bunch of bass covers of this song and they're all wrong. i learned straight from this master track so i should probably put up a cover

  • LOOL FAKE !!

  • @sin1982cl your fake, this is the reak track cocksucker

  • Just because James' massive crunch guitar isn't here doesn't mean it has be disliked its just the bass is swallowed by his tone

  • to all the nonmetal retards...do you know how hard you have to pluck those strings to pull off that echoey /rumbly twang that's being created here? everything in this playing style is meant to harmonize with the guitar to a masterful level of precision. stop playing with the volume quarter of the way up cuz ur mom dosent like the noise, and jam that shit full volume and see if you measure up. chances are, you dont.

  • @funinkage8 Dude I totally agree. This tone is meant to be played in the mix, and not isolated like this.

  • @BleedBlsSdmf

Actually, they all recorded their parts separate (Cliff being the last, because he had the most to offer). It's not as good as the whole song sure, but this is still good for learning

  • RIP Cliff Rock in Peace

  • R.I.P Cliff Burton

  • God took Cliff away because he knew if Metallica kept going they would take over the world.

  • @hez1919 I wonder where do you get this information from. Listen to other "bass only" tracks, this is how Cliff plays.

  • @maksphoto78 well if this is how he played then he is no bass god...its sloppy and choppy...

  • holy shit is 6:37 bass i thougt it was a guitar wow

  • Yeah, every time you see someone claiming that Burton is over-rated, simply direct them to this video so they can know just how wrong they are... You have to wonder what a genius like him would be doing musically if he was still alive.

  • Any ideas on how to play the opening chords?

  • @LordLTSmash it's just 7th fret on the A string, then 9th on D string, then 9th on A string, with loads of crazeh effects

  • @LordLTSmash Open E string, 7th fret A string

    5th fret A, 4 fret G

    4th fret D, 6th fret A

  • 8:04 \m/

    ROCK IN PEACE

  • 6:37

There's no way to sum that up.

  • Cliff Burton was one of the BEST bass players . His soul is inside this song and lives on with us every time we listen it . ALL HAIL THE BASS GOD

  • it's so heavy and so soft..

    please return between us, cliff..

  • just... E P I C W I N

  • Amazing... I'm trying to learn this song!

  • That bass solo scared the shit out of me just now haha. at 6:37. Blew up my speakers.

  • @SD3255 lmfao me too

  • @SD3255 it loud like fuck

  • @SuperRockinMuffin10 .

And I'm guessing "fuck" is pretty damn loud! lol

  • ha ha me to

I know / adore this song and it surprised me to.

  • @SD3255

i can imagine your face hahahahahahahahahahahaa

  • @SD3255 Did the same to me, except I had headphones on... I think i got boner hearing it too

  • Comment removed

  • @SD3255 That's actually guitar and bass guitar because the guitar didn't get fully separated. I think the lower harmony is bass guitar, and the higher harmony is guitar.

  • @MW2fatcats Actually duder_ they're both Cliff's bass_ both low & high are Cliff on that dual track. The same sound that sounds "guitar~y" in that feed is the same pedal(s)_overdrive/distortion/gain_ you hear @ the 1:50 mark. That "guitar~y" sound is signature of Cliff. Only ORION and ANESTHESIA did he record that sound which he primarily used when he practiced . Metallica's LIVE performances and sheet music you'll notice that both guitars play the rhythm section while he solos out that section

  • Absolutely Amazing!!! I had my doubts at first but after listening to a few of these, they are indeed authentic. This is win of the highest magnitude! Some of these parts I knew well, but there was still quite a few surprises. To think that those old Cherry Lane tab books were so wrong in some spots! It's awesome to know the 100% right way now to play these songs, and more awesome that through this, Cliff Lives On!!!

    Thanks for the posts!!!

  • you somehow ripped it from guitar hero metallica

  • How is he getting that sound from the start of the song? E-bow or something?

  • @calypsocoral ,most likely some kind of in-studio synth mixed in with his distortion and wah tones.....great intro though...

  • 4:00 to 6:30 is fucking amazing.

  • i don't pray to god i pray to CLIFF BURTON!!!!!R.I.P!!!

  • @SPAMagent u r excited

  • Of course the stuff starting at 6:37 is harmonized with guitar.

  • Those bass leads are all bass, he uses a wah to up the pitch.

Great stuff, though. It always takes a while to grasp the concept of getting to hear the bass on its own.

  • The real shame about this song is, it was his masterpiece. His greatest contribution to the band throughout his entire career.

If anybody's ever felt what Bass feels like live, you'd know just how fun this song would be to hear. But nobody ever got that chance.

    Not even Cliff.

The crash happened before he ever got the chance.

The song was never even played by Metallica until recently, but nobody, not even Rob who is said to be technically better than Cliff, could pull it off just right.

  • That solo has BOTH guitar and bass playing simultaneously.

  • The solo at 6:37 sounds so awesome when you hear it by itself

  • that in fact isa base solo, it's just higher pitched

  • Cliff plays like that. Lots of wah effects going as he shreds like any good guitarist, except he does it on bass. He's incredible like that.

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a great example. Played all the way up on the neck on the highest string with an auto-wah effect for extra awesome.

If you can find me a bass player that sounds anything like the stuff he plays, I'll be impressed. Not even the later Metallica bassists can manage playing like him.

  • damn, that freaky AMAZING!!!

    6:36 - 6:56 wow

  • shit! this is a master piece!!!!

    burton is amazing!

  • dude... u must said "burton WAS amazing..." but that's ok... that guy was a inspiration for all the metal community =)

  • This may well be the coolest thing I have ever stumbled upon in all my years of visiting YouTube.

At times, he may be a bit sloppy but you cannot argue with his astounding command of harmony, inventiveness of effects and sheer unabashed playing every note with his all. Bless you, Cliff for all that you have contributed and all that you accomplished in such a short time.

  • I agree wholeheartedly with your statement. He brought a loose vibe to their songs which worked perfect with the flawless guitar riffs. He wasn't playing like he thought every note would be examined under a microscope.

  • Fuzz bass drove Metallica during this period. You can see a distinct change after Cliff's death. RIP C B.

  • In my opinion, if Cliff were still alive, I think he would have done more creativity with his distortion, but would have later on gone to create cleaner music something of what Jason picked up with.

Sure it would have been Cliff Burton's style but not as heavy and fuzz washed, clearly a slower progression down to what they are today but with a better line up of music.

  • Who said that playing clean non-distorted, plain bass is better than fuzz bass? Some of the best bands like Sabbath, et all, had a distorted bass. Nobody in their right mind thinks Jason is better than Cliff. And Jason played way fuzzy in Flotsam and Jetsam.

  • wich pedal does cliff use Distortion or Overdrive? i have a dist i cant find the tune, help me pls =D

  • @Giuzippper

He used an Electro Harmonix Big Muff for his distortion. For the wah, he used a Morley Power Wah Boost, I think. IIRC, that one also has a bit of distortion wired into it.

  • El mejor bajista de todos los tiempos sin duda alguna.

    D.E.P Cliff

  • this only increases my respect for the greatest bassist to grace the planet.

    R.I.P Cliff Burton

  • He's still the best

    R.I.P cliff

  • Even if I play the guitar, this is the most inspiring Metallica song!!!Cliff truly is a legend.

  • R.I.P Cliff

  • 6:38 - 6:56 shows why cliff burton is a fucking legend.

    R.I.P cliff.

  • Sounds like six string harmonies to me, not bass.

  • i'm pretty sure if this is the bass master track, then it is bass.

  • Well, I know he plays the same part the guitars do on that section, but I don't hear it in the master track here, only on the album. I like the breakdown 3/8 change.

  • its bass u fucking retard

  • Do you have any idea what a master track is you stupid faggot? no because youre an ignorant douchy 16 year old faggot with braces who jerks off to cartoon porn.

Fucking queer. This is most likely a track that's been physically separated (not from guitar hero) by a program, which tends to leave certain sounds in, because you can't completely isolate one sound if another is panned in the same hemisphere.

That my friend is an aspect of music that you do not understand.

  • You're right, it's not the bass. Not low enough to be bass, even if it is distorted. I also don't see that part in the bass tab, but I see it in the guitar tab...

  • believe, its the bass! there aren´t bass tabs to it because "it sounds too amazing for a bass" ;) but i can it play ,too, its played on bass

  • ITS ALSO PLAYED ON GUITAR WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU. Jesus, it's harmony for a reason, because THEY PLAY THE SAME THING.

  • @serveTHEservants

thats not how they play it, your tabs are wrong.

  • I don't use tabs, I read sheet music. Anyway, you can hear the notes quite prominantly.. any advanced - veteran musician can tell you so.

  • @serveTHEservants

Dude i just read back and I think i replied to the wrong post originally, have no idea what notes ur talking about, forget i replied to you lol wrong one :p

  • @serveTHEservants If you are referring to the bass solo, it's actually not played on guitar. Cliff double tracked the bass, the guitars both play a simple rhythm piece under it.

  • This is all bass people.

  • No it's not. 6:36 and on isn't, because I know how the song is played. That part is both guitar and bass, the 'thinnest' pitch is the guitar. You can hear the bass under it for a while; everything after 6:46 is perfectly harmonized.

The track posted here was probably taken from Guitar Hero. Those kinds of leftovers are found all over the place on tracks taken from the game, like the guitar screeching at the end of such bass tracks from For Whom the Bell Tolls.

  • Yeah I know. To be honest, when I first heard 'For Whom The Bell Tolls', I thought the intro was guitar lol. But It only took me like a week to realize it was bass.

  • Someone asked about the intro. It sounds to me that he is running a distorted bass through a leslie effect - Im pretty sure that´s it. But the output is probably heavily modified. The solo and other small bass parts is with distortion and some other effect.

  • The track comes from the game "Guitar Hero: Metallica", which uses the original master tracks. These audio files were ripped from the game itself.

  • @kalaharasamir Dude, your a retard. This is exactly how cliff plays it, listen to the song. I can hear this exact bass in the song. same timing, and everything. this is cliffs bass. Learn bass. Idiot.

  • @kalaharasamir you sir are retarded

  • @kalaharasamir Nah man, it is. Cliff could play fast, shred, and write, but it's not like he was the cleanest player.

  • @kalaharasamir retard..

  • Comment removed

  • uh.

  • from 0:00 to 1:00, is it the bass?

    how can i do this?

    O.O

  • yes it is bass

  • He's got his bass going through a distortion pedal, and a chorus pedal I believe.

And he has the volume fading in through the intro.

  • I've seen Trujillo do it live, he uses some sort of distortion effect or something

  • just distortion? no chorus pedal?

  • you have to hack life

  • Russian Stovek Big Muff.

  • with a distortion pedal and a morley wah pedal

  • You need a bunch of leslie effects. It usually used with Hammond organs. Run your distorted Rickenbacker 4001 through several leslies and you are home. Also, Cliff hadn´t the original pickups on his Ric, they were replaced with some trash pickups, atleast the rightmost one, the main pickup. I´ve been having several rickenbacker 4001:s over the years and I cant say anything beats the original pickups, but thats my personal opinion

  • isnt it true he wrote the guitar and drums for orion too?

  • He def. wrote the entire guitar harmonization part in the second half of the song.

But drums? Not too sure about that.

  • he didnt wrote drums and guitar, lars and kirk did that

  • I still don't got why are people making videos like "XXX vs. Cliff Burton". We know who's the winner before watching that ;).

  • yup "xxx" wins

  • God damn.

Just when I thought I knew how to play the song I find the bass track and realize it's all wrong.

    /facepalm.

  • to be fair bro how many wrong tabs is there lol

  • 1:44 fucking awesome the tune of bass
