Holy shit I thought the riff starting at 6:37 was Kirk all this time damn that bass sounds king. Cliff is the reason I starting playing bass.8:05, 8:09,8:13 cant hardly hear those riffs on studio version sounds good.RIP Cliff!
@TheHoby34 ...I am not even a bass player and i knew that..but i was listening to Metallica way back, twenty years ago.so i always know when he was playing the parts cause his signature Wahh,,going in to the solos

@triplenippel123 it actually isnt bad and i was just trying to help. if you enjoy paying for bass tracks that are readily available for download then be my guest
@slaughter69corpse thats what guitars are for...the bass just holds the beat together so most of the time the bass and drums play along really good to hold the beat down
Wow, Cliff Burton is the best metal bass player I've ever heard playing and I've heard a lot. My music idol no hesitation. Thanks for all these awesome bass shreds with \M/etallica Cliff, specially Orion and Anesthesia--Pulling Teeth. Enough said.

Actually, they all recorded their parts separate (Cliff being the last, because he had the most to offer). It's not as good as the whole song sure, but this is still good for learning

this is not the master track from the album....there are full band stops in the song which in this version here has cliff playing notes...once again just because this says master track doesnt mean its so...this is just a good bassist playing his own take on this song
Yeah, every time you see someone claiming that Burton is over-rated, simply direct them to this video so they can know just how wrong they are... You have to wonder what a genius like him would be doing musically if he was still alive.
@SD3255 That's actually guitar and bass guitar because the guitar didn't get fully separated. I think the lower harmony is bass guitar, and the higher harmony is guitar.
@MW2fatcats Actually duder_ they're both Cliff's bass_ both low & high are Cliff on that dual track. The same sound that sounds "guitar~y" in that feed is the same pedal(s)_overdrive/distortion/gain_ you hear @ the 1:50 mark. That "guitar~y" sound is signature of Cliff. Only ORION and ANESTHESIA did he record that sound which he primarily used when he practiced . Metallica's LIVE performances and sheet music you'll notice that both guitars play the rhythm section while he solos out that section
Absolutely Amazing!!! I had my doubts at first but after listening to a few of these, they are indeed authentic. This is win of the highest magnitude! Some of these parts I knew well, but there was still quite a few surprises. To think that those old Cherry Lane tab books were so wrong in some spots! It's awesome to know the 100% right way now to play these songs, and more awesome that through this, Cliff Lives On!!!
The real shame about this song is, it was his masterpiece. His greatest contribution to the band throughout his entire career.
If anybody's ever felt what Bass feels like live, you'd know just how fun this song would be to hear. But nobody ever got that chance.
Not even Cliff.
The crash happened before he ever got the chance.
The song was never even played by Metallica until recently, but nobody, not even Rob who is said to be technically better than Cliff, could pull it off just right.
Cliff plays like that. Lots of wah effects going as he shreds like any good guitarist, except he does it on bass. He's incredible like that.
For Whom the Bell Tolls is a great example. Played all the way up on the neck on the highest string with an auto-wah effect for extra awesome.
If you can find me a bass player that sounds anything like the stuff he plays, I'll be impressed. Not even the later Metallica bassists can manage playing like him.
This may well be the coolest thing I have ever stumbled upon in all my years of visiting YouTube.
At times, he may be a bit sloppy but you cannot argue with his astounding command of harmony, inventiveness of effects and sheer unabashed playing every note with his all. Bless you, Cliff for all that you have contributed and all that you accomplished in such a short time.
I agree wholeheartedly with your statement. He brought a loose vibe to their songs which worked perfect with the flawless guitar riffs. He wasn't playing like he thought every note would be examined under a microscope.
In my opinion, if Cliff were still alive, I think he would have done more creativity with his distortion, but would have later on gone to create cleaner music something of what Jason picked up with.
Sure it would have been Cliff Burton's style but not as heavy and fuzz washed, clearly a slower progression down to what they are today but with a better line up of music.
Who said that playing clean non-distorted, plain bass is better than fuzz bass? Some of the best bands like Sabbath, et all, had a distorted bass. Nobody in their right mind thinks Jason is better than Cliff. And Jason played way fuzzy in Flotsam and Jetsam.
He used an Electro Harmonix Big Muff for his distortion. For the wah, he used a Morley Power Wah Boost, I think. IIRC, that one also has a bit of distortion wired into it.
Well, I know he plays the same part the guitars do on that section, but I don't hear it in the master track here, only on the album. I like the breakdown 3/8 change.
Do you have any idea what a master track is you stupid faggot? no because youre an ignorant douchy 16 year old faggot with braces who jerks off to cartoon porn.
Fucking queer. This is most likely a track that's been physically separated (not from guitar hero) by a program, which tends to leave certain sounds in, because you can't completely isolate one sound if another is panned in the same hemisphere.
That my friend is an aspect of music that you do not understand.
You're right, it's not the bass. Not low enough to be bass, even if it is distorted. I also don't see that part in the bass tab, but I see it in the guitar tab...
Dude i just read back and I think i replied to the wrong post originally, have no idea what notes ur talking about, forget i replied to you lol wrong one :p
@serveTHEservants If you are referring to the bass solo, it's actually not played on guitar. Cliff double tracked the bass, the guitars both play a simple rhythm piece under it.
No it's not. 6:36 and on isn't, because I know how the song is played. That part is both guitar and bass, the 'thinnest' pitch is the guitar. You can hear the bass under it for a while; everything after 6:46 is perfectly harmonized.
The track posted here was probably taken from Guitar Hero. Those kinds of leftovers are found all over the place on tracks taken from the game, like the guitar screeching at the end of such bass tracks from For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Yeah I know. To be honest, when I first heard 'For Whom The Bell Tolls', I thought the intro was guitar lol. But It only took me like a week to realize it was bass.
Someone asked about the intro. It sounds to me that he is running a distorted bass through a leslie effect - Im pretty sure that´s it. But the output is probably heavily modified. The solo and other small bass parts is with distortion and some other effect.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Also, again: This can hardly be the original master track. Sounds to me that someone has taken the leslie intro and solos etc - but the rest is played by this someones own bass. Some parts are played wrong and would hardly qualify as the original master track.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ok. Assuming that´s true, and if you say so, I believe you; The "great" Cliff B played a pretty lousy bass guitar..?! Thank god it´s blended in with the rest of the music and mixed low..
@kalaharasamir Dude, your a retard. This is exactly how cliff plays it, listen to the song. I can hear this exact bass in the song. same timing, and everything. this is cliffs bass. Learn bass. Idiot.
You need a bunch of leslie effects. It usually used with Hammond organs. Run your distorted Rickenbacker 4001 through several leslies and you are home. Also, Cliff hadn´t the original pickups on his Ric, they were replaced with some trash pickups, atleast the rightmost one, the main pickup. I´ve been having several rickenbacker 4001:s over the years and I cant say anything beats the original pickups, but thats my personal opinion

This is all bass people.

Also, again: This can hardly be the original master track. Sounds to me that someone has taken the leslie intro and solos etc - but the rest is played by this someones own bass. Some parts are played wrong and would hardly qualify as the original master track.

The track comes from the game "Guitar Hero: Metallica", which uses the original master tracks. These audio files were ripped from the game itself.

Learn bass. Idiot.

@kalaharasamir Nah man, it is. Cliff could play fast, shred, and write, but it's not like he was the cleanest player.

He's got his bass going through a distortion pedal, and a chorus pedal I believe.
And he has the volume fading in through the intro.
MP1VHT 2 years ago
I've seen Trujillo do it live, he uses some sort of distortion effect or something
XanaduMyHome 2 years ago

You need a bunch of leslie effects. It usually used with Hammond organs. Run your distorted Rickenbacker 4001 through several leslies and you are home. Also, Cliff hadn´t the original pickups on his Ric, they were replaced with some trash pickups, atleast the rightmost one, the main pickup. I´ve been having several rickenbacker 4001:s over the years and I cant say anything beats the original pickups, but thats my personal opinion

isnt it true he wrote the guitar and drums for orion too?
jlblakeland 2 years ago
He def. wrote the entire guitar harmonization part in the second half of the song.
But drums? Not too sure about that.
MP1VHT 2 years ago
he didnt wrote drums and guitar, lars and kirk did that
