OMFG, I have no words is this a joke? When the beat started I couldn't believe how cheesy this is. Seriously why the title says Liszt?? It's the "Dies Irae" gregorian melody ok yes, but has fucking NOTHING to do with Liszt's masterpiece Totentanz :D
I feel a lot of envy around here...it's so sad cause whether someone is good or bad at what they do, envy kills those who own it and they usually never get to perform any better than the person they envy...
@ailiz7 your right, amazing how ugly jealusy is. maksim is young, when i was that age if i had that talent i probably would have been drawn to the same stuff, cant WAIT to see what he's going to turn into. check out his hungarian rhapsody no. 2, i see a star in the future that could compete against liszt himself! (he definetly has the critics in an uproar)
this is hilarious...he starts it faster than anyone who plays the realy one...but then never play the actually hard part -.- and also makes the arpeggios just one octave...AT LEAST PLAY THE SAME PIANO PART IF YOU'RE MAKING A TRANSCRIPTION OF IT!!!
@Mattyb2001uk Michelle Kwan was going to skate to this at the 2006 Olympics. She ended up only performing it once in public though. The video is here on youtube.
Any good student from Julliard or one of the other top conservatories has more talent on the keyboard Maksim. Amuzing that he left out the repeated notes and the octaves are just a fraction of the tempo performed by much more gifted pianists. He certainly is a good actor, on his mic'd piano.
@classicalalways If he was to play the octaves at the correct speed (and believe me he can) then it wouldn't match the beat. And if the beat was increased then it would be touching on rave music and nothing else would fit. I would suggest you check out other performances, Liszt ballade perhaps, to see he's pretty good at what he does. Anyway who are we to judge, music is hardly a competetive sport now is it?
@Mattyb2001uk Maksim's Liszt on YouTube, especially those with the most views, are hardly virtuoso piano playing. Whether it be with beat or without a beat, his termpos are clearly more labored and lack much in terms of fireworks (excepts for the glissando he focused so hard on). While music is not a competitive sport, the careers of musicians is a competitive marketplace. Kissin, Hamelin, Lisitsa, and several other pianists that make Maksim look like he is just at best a decent student.
@icok25 I have made some great music - but you won't know it unless you open your eyes. Hate those who have a different opinion, as you do - it is what makes your, my and all of our political systems pathetic. If you just opened your mind and listened to all of the pianists who perform a work, maybe you could know what you are talking about.
@icok25 You may not care to be educated and listen to different performances of a work - so enjoy the only one you know, and don't listen to Valentina Lisitsa or Francesco Libetta. Sure, I am jealous of the mediocre and lesser talented musicians who portray themselves as something they are not - not good.
The artist's hand makes palpable the subtle embroideries of dreams... the writing gives free rein to the occult, The painting gives a face to your hope and the music makes all real and palpable.
this version is good until youv heard the original. maksim got me into alota classical music so i shouldnt put him down. i love the use of effects in this version. they are pretty cool. however ya only realise how much maksim has watered it down once ya hear someone as awesome as valentina lisitsa playing it. apparently this piece was written on a variation of mozart. that would explain the resemblance between it and the shining intro!
A child could play this pathetic version. This is an insult to Liszt. Listen to the original and prepare to cry, compared to this garbage. I look forward to your embarrassingly stupid replies and counter arguments, Mattyb2001uk.
@Scottondanet I went and saw his solo concert and it was amazing, I highly recommend it, when it's just Maksim and his piano with no backing it is truely magical!

Es impresonante!! Me gusta la musica clasica, pero tambien la musica que es nueva, que estas llena de sentimiento...Musica de nuestro tiempo y este musico es IMPRESIONANTE...
Mattyb2001uk you are absolutely right! People who complain about this magnificent piano player I have two things to tell you. First of all: don't like the music, well, then this is not your style. ERASE "MAKSIM MRVICA" FROM THE SEARCH BAR AND LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE. and the second one, you don't like this music, well then you are stupid.
but you can't crossover popular music with classical music, classical music is art., crossover is between popular genders, but a crossover between pop and classical is not crossover at all, it's butchering
You're an idiot; seriously. Elitism in music should not be accepted, if the artist goes in a direction you don't like, you cant stop him. Art is art: a form of expression which elicits an emotional response and if you don't like that expression, don't listen to it.
one of the things i love about Maksim is how he can play both gently and aggresively with skill, but he tends to turn classical music into something groovy, adding drum beats and voice
@Rheostatik .... stop complaining just because you can't appreciate music .. what you dont understand is that he has actual talent .. he not only listens to music but he has the talent and guts to change the music and bring it to a whole new audience .. its not about what type of music this is .. its about how many people it can touch ... music is all about expression .. this is how he expresses himself .. just because you can't understand it .. doesnt give you the right to judge it ...
I can't appreciate music? That's a pretty crazy thing to say.
I've been to 8 recitals so far in 2010, one of which being devoted to Liszt transcriptions (of and by). I've gone to 12 (I think) shows at local bars, everything from bluegrass to indie rock.
I don't need a lecture on music, thank you very much. All I'm saying is that he's reinforcing a negative stereotype towards fans of classical music.
But I guess your expert opinion and "expression-o-metre" says otherwise.
This his horrible, incredibly simplified from the original, and easy to play. Maksim looks like a child and completely ruins an originally beautiful piece. Just watch a performance of the original to wash this shit out of your head:
It's a masterpiece! He has brang a new age of music to the world like no other. This will show people classical will live on in this world full of uncultural wasteland
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This isn't classical music. If anything, he's distancing people from true classical music, by encouraging the unfortunate stereotype that the piano/orchestra music is for rich white socialites. Simplifying arrangements and adding generic drum beats is only hurting the music.
I went to a recital yesterday of Brahms' Piano Quartet. Everybody in the audience was wearing jeans, and the average age was about 22. There were no drumbeats and they played the actual music.
@Rheostatik I disagree. If anything, I think this is a brilliant way of introducing Liszt and many other classical composer to the younger generation - a way of continuing the music. There is no such thing as true classical music, there's only interpretation of it, and this interpretation is spot on.
To compose a background music that fits so well, he must have really *understood* the music.
I am sure lots of people'd agree with me that we've passed that stereotype a long time ago.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is pop music. Not classical. That's not an opinion, that's a fact.
He's not continuing the music. The universities, who give the opportunity to train and educate young artists, who in turn devote their lives to and feed their families by interpreting the music of classical composers as they actually wrote it. That's how it's being carried on. 20 years from now, Maksim will be forgotten.
And no, the stereotype still exists. Just the read the comments for proof.
this song is AWESOME! love that riff at 3 :37! i just read the info at the top about homophobic comments and...is maksim gay? lol not that it matters, hes a great artist. but still, its interesting. shame for all the ladies out there who think hes hot though :P
haha.the uploader's comment is very good.if anyone don like it , just say so....don insult.i don think maksim is ruining the music since most people like it very much.
music is music whether they are interpretations or original pieces, it is what it is. Even if everyone believes that the song is an abomination, it is still music because the artist who created it or interpreted it believes whatever they feel and that's still music. Makism is epic just like many of these new age guys. Big love to them!
watever said and done... maksim in a wonderful pianist... such talent should be appreciated and not insulted.... loving this and all his other performances =)
I think its preposterous not to allow certain comments - I mean give me a break - that's the whole point of this thing. Now about Maksim - there are things in this that I couldn't listen to for very long, but I have a funny feeling (and I even hate to admit this!) that if Liszt had lived to be 200 years old he'd probably be doing this exact kind of thing! Amazing.
So it's a new kind of music; it's theatrical, so what? Get over it. He can play, and if you love work from "Somewhere in Time", you know he has a beautiful sensitivity for the music. He is definitely musical, he has the skill and training and he believes in what he is doing. Is he making money? Probably. But it's his job to do what he does and if he continues to grow and develop into an even better "entertainer", then we will be very lucky indeed. He's no Liberace, thank god!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol. Where did all of the cadenzas go?
Yup, Maksim destroyed this piece and Liszt is turning in his grave.
Even if he didn't create these dumb arrangements, he obviously shows no respect for the music if he's still willing to "perform" them. Or he just wants money.
Maksim is NOT gay!!! He has a wife and little girl!!! What's the matter with you people!!!!!!!!! Mattyb you started this with your threats on several of Maksim's videos!! You see so many wonderful comments on this talented young man and those of us that love his music, love him for being himself!!! Now let's get on with listening to all of our favorites that he plays so beautifully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wait, Maksim is gay? thats awesome!!! as a equality activist i think its awesome when an amazing musician is homosexual. if you are into equality check out the amazing atheist's video on homophobia its amazing.
And i appreciate finding his videos here because in my country is kind of hard to get such wonderful music, even if we are able to pay for it. Actualy, i don´t see people in my country having a good musical taste... It´s a shame!

OneSkiWonder 2 years ago 2
I'm not denying that this is "actual music". Of course it's music, nobody on earth will deny that.
I'm just saying it's not particularly good music. No offense to Mr. Maksim, though...he's not a BAD player.
Rheostatik 1 year ago
@Rheostatik Well I think this music is brilliant. Being open to change is part of progression.
OneSkiWonder 1 year ago
Well, I think this music is lame. My idea of change doesn't consist of removing 90% of the music and adding generic drum beats.
Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Rheostatik 1 year ago
@Rheostatik That we will, else have a long argument. Because I seriously love this song. I'd say they removed about 10 percent of the "music".

haha.the uploader's comment is very good.if anyone don like it , just say so....don insult.i don think maksim is ruining the music since most people like it very much.
danielchong1234 2 years ago 4
music is music whether they are interpretations or original pieces, it is what it is. Even if everyone believes that the song is an abomination, it is still music because the artist who created it or interpreted it believes whatever they feel and that's still music. Makism is epic just like many of these new age guys. Big love to them!

I can't even listen to this, why would he ever do this? This doesn't even sound good..
sephipollo 2 years ago
I can never get enough of this guy. He really enjoys what he is doing, and I love listening to it.
I like the mixture of classical and modern music. It's hybrid allows people of both schools to listen to music outside their realm of expertise.

watever said and done... maksim in a wonderful pianist... such talent should be appreciated and not insulted.... loving this and all his other performances =)

Amazing.

wat an amazing preformance

So it's a new kind of music; it's theatrical, so what? Get over it. He can play, and if you love work from "Somewhere in Time", you know he has a beautiful sensitivity for the music. He is definitely musical, he has the skill and training and he believes in what he is doing. Is he making money? Probably. But it's his job to do what he does and if he continues to grow and develop into an even better "entertainer", then we will be very lucky indeed. He's no Liberace, thank god!

I love the frenzy! It's kind of terrifying actually! lol! :D
myorli29 2 years ago
A little repetitive.
Sounds like someone looped all their favorite parts. like 3 second loops.
I can't believe he wasted his time learning this. It absolutely makes no sense.
Just when I thought it was over he starts back up. I'm okay with someone expressing themself.
Just putting techno music over wonderful pieces is quite annoying.
Federich Chopin even was so bold to say that if anyone didn't play his music right. Don't play it at all.
Girls fall for it though :P.

lol. Where did all of the cadenzas go?
Yup, Maksim destroyed this piece and Liszt is turning in his grave.
Even if he didn't create these dumb arrangements, he obviously shows no respect for the music if he's still willing to "perform" them. Or he just wants money.
