  • great video n nice song

  • both steam train is steamlined train and thank god for not to sent to stripped

  • @katrina9669 The song is from a kids show, and you can't even spell lesbian.

  • shiney time station :( loved that show!

  • @sircrashalot It's Shining time Station.

  • hmm. the 1218 is the "theme train" for trainz12

  • hmmm who wants to put some coal in their tenders and take them for a "test drive".

  • Nice!!!

  • miss those trains, ones today dont have the look or the sound kinda sucks balls

  • I rode behind both of them. More so the 611. It's sad that they no longer run. I guess I should say I was lucky enough to enjoy them both.

  • was 611's stable-mate 1218,610 or 612?

  • the j class is my favorite

  • Wow haven't heard this song in 20 years when I used to watch Shiny Time Station on PBS.

  • I saw 611 in action back in the mid 80s, in Fort Wayne Indiana, She sure was a beautiful sight., and very sad now that she is sitting in a mus, doing nothing.

  • 1218 is the only 2-6-6-4 steam locomotive left in the world. I got that from wikipedia.

  • @Vorahk3985 It would have been great if a replica of 1218 was built.

  • @Kanefan701 never know some rail fan may build one someday lol

  • @Kanefan701 I am making one and the same with the 611.

  • @Kanefan701 Why would you build a replica if the original still exists???

  • @Kanefan701 You don't need a replica, 1218 is a "clean slate", no band-aid fixes. As I understand a new fire box thats ready to be finished. All she needs is somone with a fully equiped steam loco shop, the parts box cars, deep pockets and a place to run her.

  • Nice pics ....this looks like the Trans. Mus. in Roanoke Va.. but its been a while since Ive been there.....

  • I remember when Roanoke Shops started to put styling into the old Steamers, I always liked the, back then, new look, awesome memories.

  • Also TU :-) for this vid and .... at least there's quite a few steam locos out there on mainline railroads powering along.

Check my new vid..... Steam Trains At High Speed watch?v=0aJiDiZ_VPM

  • If I had a few million spare bucks I'd finance building a new one (3G steam) and challenge that stuffy old museum to get 611 into shape for a double header to cruise the road at a sedate 100 mph - sedate by J class standards!!! :-)

  • ok who here i singing along with the music?

  • OMG SHINGTIME STATION!!! **TEARS**

  • The 1218 Is not like a challenger. A challenger could never be expected to operate on the timetable and with the tonnage that the "A's" did. An allegheny or big boy could handle the tonnage and better, but not the timetable or the efficiency (coal and water used per mile)

  • I used to go there a lot when I lived in America, good to see they've been taking good care of 611

  • 1218 will never run again. its nothing more than a locomotive shell

  • Not Norfolk, Roanoke.

  • I think the chance of either of these running again is the same as the chance of any of the PRR locomotives at the Railroad Museum of PA at East Strasburg steaming again, which is zero. Perhaps the 611 could at least come back, maybe someone should ask Wick CEO at NS if that will ever happen. Then, excursions could be run in Virginia with the 611 and the 630 and 4501 will run out of Tennessee. I wish NS would run steam excursions in PA, though. They have plenty of main line with the ex CR lines.

  • @rwk360 I think the CEO wouldn't have a problem with 611 running, it probly the board of directors. It would appear to me that NS wants to be back in Steam but they don't want an excurison problem like they had before.

  • the 1218 is basicly a challenger like the unions pacifics

  • the most famous steam locomotives in my state of Virginia!

  • These awesome ladies do not deserve to be tied down.... They were born to run. Let them!

  • @labhunter1 I agree. How much are you going to pay to have them run? Costs a lot of money ya know.....

  • i didn't expect the song.

    fuck i'm crying.

  • @edwoodboy9 Well I used it to remember them. They were one of the greatest engines ever created.

  • Sad These Don't Run Any Longer. I'd Like To See #611 And SP #4449 Do A Doubleheader!

  • @MozerTransportation Now THAT would be the ultimate dream for me. SP 4449 is my number 1 american steam locomotive. N&W 611 is my second. I've always dreamed of seeing those to together, doubleheading.

  • @MozerTransportation the only sad thing bout that is 4449 resides in portland oregon, when not on excurcsions, and 611 is in Roanoke virginia, but i do agree tho that would be a cool double header so would 3985 and 1218

  • @Barricade360 That's another good ultimate dream. 3985 and 1218 steaming together.....

  • @Kanefan701, I suppose a railroad enthusiast (like you and I) could purchase scale models of numbers 4449, 611, 3985, and 1218 and create all sorts of combinations of double-headers, but it wouldn't be the same as seeing the real locomotives in action.

  • @Stussmeister that I agree. scale models of them would be fine.

  • @Barricade360 It would be awesome to have a big event with 1218, 3985, 611, 844 and 4449 all together. 1218 and 3985 could run a doubleheader and 844, 611, and 4449 could run in a tripleheader like GCRY did with 29, 4960, and 3751 when 3751 came to Williams, AZ. Then again, someone would want to throw in 3751 and every other surviving steamer. It would be awesome if the railroads would come together, pick a spot roughly in the middle of all of them, and take every operable steamer to that place.

  • how come they are not running?

  • @pennyf9 because they are both retired.

  • Bizare pair to keep together, but at least they exist.

  • damn I completely forgot about the theme song to shining time station. thank you for making me smile today :)

  • Massive labour costs killed all steam -

  • with #4501 coming back is #611 coming

  • These locomotives are located in Norfolk, Va.

  • @barronzm

actually they are housed in the city that gave birth to them, Roanoke,VA

  • @ljones121 Yeah I knew that, I just was mistaken. I really wish that at least 611 was still running.

  • The first time i saw 1218,i thought she was a deisel, cause her funnel/chimney was far back XD

  • man, thats sad seeing beautiful engins in pretty good

condition just sit there, so sad : /

  • CRASH JP MORGAN, BUY SILVER NOW!

  • Please tell me where both of these engines are located so I can go and see them. I went on excursions on each of these in 89' and 90' in Asheville, NC. Would like to see them again. Thanks.

  • @wesbann

the Virginia Museum of Transportation, in Roanoke,VA

  • hopefuly these two beautys will run once again!

  • Seeing these two dolled up locomotives sitting in a museum is almost like seeing someone in a coffin.. :( Don't get me wrong it's a wonderful people can still enjoy them at the museum but they really look like they need to stretch their legs. ;)

  • Really sad these two engines got retired and stuck in a museum I loved when these would come through town......and I just love the smell, look, and sound of a steam engine!!! so much better then the sound of a diesel lol

  • this song is for Shining Time Station tv show. i watched this!

  • I have pictures of when my family went down there 25 years ago. At least their under a roof now.

  • @HaloCE14

agreed. i live in rockford, IL thought so i hope they can get them over to this part of the country somehow.

  • @HaloCE14

you can never give up hope

  • Well, NS says they're bringing back steam and it looks like we will have the 4501 back next year if all goes well. Anything is possible......

  • @HaloCE14

lets hope norfolk southern will put forth the money fr it to happen. I've seen UP #3985 run and would love to see these 2.

  • @HaloCE14

i thought #1218's boiler was still intact, but it was missing several other key parts. I'm confused. lol. i read a different post.

  • Join the Facebook Group i made!!!! search: RESTORE Norfolk and Western J Class 611 and The Norfolk & Western # 1218......maybe it will raise some awareness because NS added me as a friend and everybody on the list

  • man, thats sad seeing beautiful engins in pretty good condition just sit there, so sad : /

  • At least their not scrapped.

  • Wow, I'm not sure how one cannot like the hooter! I melt when i hear that sound. Back in the 50's those old N&W engineers could make them talk in a way no other could compare.

  • What do you mean?

  • @Kanefan701 , He's talking about the whistle.

  • @dabrendorfer Oh I definatlly agree nothing quite beats the N&W Hooter and a skilled engineer blaowing it I was just watching the Pocohontas glory tape and listening to them I love the old N&W

  • I was VERY fortunate to ride behind 611 from Kenova WV to the Ohio State Fair in Columbus Ohio. I will NEVER forget it.

  • You were very luckey.

  • I'm a volunteer at the Virginia Museum of Transportation, and every time I work there I always drop by the railyard to pay these two a visit. I would've loved to see them both in action.

  • Thanks for commenting on my video. I'm planning to travel to the museam to see 611 and 1218 and make a documentery about them.

  • That's just a rumor. You can't believe everything you hear on the internet.

  • 587 isnt being looked at, 587 is being restored right now and in a bout 9 months she'll be on her feet again, NS may let her on the mainline is ITM did some negotiating

  • what's evaluation?

  • Evaluation is where they look over and determine what condition a locomotive is in for excursion service and thats exactly what theyre doing with Sou 4501 and 630.(not 903) Theyre also looking at NKP 587 and some other NS heritage steamers.

  • that means they are going to get restored again or....?

  • Well if the locomotive is in good condition like 611 they would would restore it to operating condition. If its like 1218 they would decide what needs to be done to restore it, and if they can afford YES,if they cant NO.

  • 611 should return to working order dispite showing some signs of weathering and including a small crack in her bullet nose.

All the locomotive needs is new flues and upgrades to the new FRA Form 4.

  • Very nice pictures. It's a shame to see those engines sitting there. Even though I don't like #1218's hooter whistle, I miss watching the engine run.

Also, great idea of adding the "Shining Time Station" theme to the video. That song can work with just about any video about steam locomotives, I swear.

  • One day I hope to fly to america and see these two steam engines.

I hope that one day they'll celebrate 611's birthday as well as 1218's.

  • so sad to see them american made monsters die
