I have a 1996 Ford aspire and a 2002 Mazda protege they both do it it is the a/c compressor its just a bunch of noise my aspire has the same thing for about 9 years if the a/c still blows cold it'll just be annoying
The fan is quite probably hitting something, either the shroud or something that might be caught in it. Make sure the battery is disconnected and reach you hand in there. Spin the fan around and see if it binds (gets held up) at any point of its revolution. If you can't find it that way, tell your tech to take a look. Oh, and I recommend you find a new tech.
if it is the compressor the noise should stop when you hit the green a/c button to off no matter if the fan speed is 1 2 3 or 4. if its ur compressor.. good luck. you need special certification beyond ASE to handle the a/c unit because of freons effect on the environment so its most likely a nasty trip to a real mechanic. however, if it is just the blower motor then you can probably replace in a few hours. you know its the blower motor if you can hear the noise in one or any fan speed
@MarianeJorgenson im just an amateur mechanic if you can even call me that lol, without seeing it in person its hard to tell, sounds like maybe your vent blower inside the car is loose and rubbing on something around it, ive never messed with one so im not 100% sure but id assume you have to take apart the dash to get to it, its not as hard as it sounds usually they just have little tabs that hold them in place and you just have to pull gently to pop em loose, thats where i would start anyways
i have that sound too from my ac... it only comes on when i turn on the ac. it is the compressor. it means u need to have it evacuated and recharged. have you done anything with the ac lately like attempt to recharge it yourself? if so you may have over pressurized the ac system. I have the same problem. sounds just like that. basically just take it to a mechanic and have them redo your refrigerant.. an 02 shud have 134A refrigerant.
@MarianeJorgenson open the hood and find out witch fan is making the noise. then just try bending the blade away from whatever it seems to be rubbing on. maybe a cover infront of it but you can remove it nothing should touch it
i think its the compressor cuz i have a 93 protege and it did the same thing..then it eventually stopped working. and the Georgia summers are nothin to play with w/o a good working A/C
Thats def ur compressor to the ac cuz mine makes a loud click on my pro5 when i turn it off but sounds like ur compressors about ready to kick the bucket! haha
The fan does come on without the A/C turned on as well. One way to narrow it down would be to simply unplug the radiator fan at the fan motor and turn on the A/C. If you still have the noise then it's not the rad. fan. If you still have the noise disconnect the A/c compressor plug and turn it on to see if thats it. If that does not make it stop then it's neither your Rad. fan or your A/c compressor. Remember to turn off your car anytime you reach into your engine compartment.
Just to let everyone know, it's the summer of 2009 now and the car still makes this noise. My son insists that if I drive for 30 minutes to an hour before turning on the A/C, it won't do it. I wish I could wait that long to cool off, but most of the time I don't even drive 30 minutes per trip.
i agree with (donutthrowinbdass) check your ac pulley for the play he is talkin about. im not sure about the rocker in the valve assembly but i dont usually mess with valves so im not familiar with that. but also, depending on where it is, check your blower, there may possibly be something catching it on the inside. and i also agree with him with his question....is the check engine light on?
Blower motor would not cause a check engine light. The blower motor is part of the duct work in the car. If there is something wrong with the doors something could be going against the fan as it's spinning.
from the sounds of it there is two possable things one is the rear bearing of the a/c compressor is shit see if the a/c pully has any play in it with the engine off of coarse the other is it might have broke a rocker in the valve assembely thats a possible thing especaly if you have done lots of high rpm burn outs and bouncing it off the rev limiter .. biggestquestion is ?>?? is the check engine light on?
you stupid fuck its front wheel drive there is no pully for the fan the fans are electric and the water pump is internal its located inside the timing belt cover>>.

Hi, mech from aust again. The sound is coming from your a/c compressor. to stop the noise this will need replacing. If hot air is blowing out of your a/c vents then your system will need re-gassing to find where the gas has leaked out. If so your a/c compressor has been damaged due to no gas or oil to lubricate the system. If the air from the a/c vents is cold then your a/c system has an adequate gas in it and the a/c compressor is worn out under normal operation and will require replacement.
hi i'm a mechanic from aust. the sound is coming from your a/c compressor. when you activate the a/c your extra auxiliary fan cuts in as soon as you press the a/c button. you can hear this on the footage. As your a/c compressor starts building pressure the noise starts up. if the air conditioning is cold then the clutch that activates the a/c compressor is the problem but it is part of the a/c compressor
It's has to be the A/C because I have a 2002 protege 5 es 2.0 and the A/C doesn't work and it has the clicking once and a while. I almost guarantee it... I'm getting it checked very soon, I recently replaced my oil pressure switch because it was leaking and the engine map wasn't connected properly resulting in random miss-fires. I recomened checking your A/C!
my protege5 does the same thing if the A/C is on it'll click like that. It probably the belts being to loose or too tight that cause the timing to fuck up. i need to get mine checked out as well.
From experience, when the fan kicks in, your computer tells the fuel/air mix to increase and your timming to adjust. Unfortuatly, when your timming advances and your car is out of tune (in need of a service)the motor starts to Ping,(not a good thing).
No. I haven't been able to get Lazy Husband to check out any of these suggestions, and air conditioning season hasn't started in the South yet, so it hasn't been an issue. I am hoping it will magically go away this year. But my extended warranty ends in August, so I assume it is waiting to explode until then.
2. The condenser fan of the airconditioner when the A/C is turned on. The fan blades might not be balanced or aligned thus one blade might be hitting A/C condenser.
I had a 2002 mp5 , and I pouinded the shit outta it , no car has ever takin a beating like I have beaten my mazda, I put 40k on in a year and it was still as great as when I bought it , but I had to seel for financial reasons, plus, now that its sold , check my vid out :P
That definitely sounds like something is rubbing the blades of the a/c fan. What you can do in a few minutes yourself is remove that big black air duct that is mounted on top of the fans. It should just be a couple 10mm bolts and then it pulls right up. Then you can at least see if there's something stuck in the fan. No sense dealing with dealership hassle if it might be so simple.
garryjeep & carpeja are 100% correct. I just went through this on my Protege5. My car has 140,000 miles and the ticking came on slow and got progressively worse. I thought for sure I had snapped a pushrod or something. Mazda dealers are aware of this problem. If I find out this actually is under recall, I'm going to be pissed! It cost me about $1300 to get it fixed.
there is a recall on 2003 the screw in the intake manifold the holds a butterfly in place
backs its way out and falls down into the motor.
a good way to see if this is it is to.
go to the pas side of your car where the belts are and to the top were the intake manifold is there will be this rod you can push down or pull up on it.. noise goes away then you know it is the screws backing there way out.. good luck..
I've been to the Mazda dealer twice with it. They say they "don't hear any noise," so have no idea what to fix. That's why I made this video, to prove there is a noise. I paid them money already to replace a fan behind the radiator, but that didn't make any difference. I don't want to keep "guessing" at so many dollars a guess.
your F'd dude. There's a TSB on that clicking noise. A tiny nut/bolt falls off the throttle body and goes inside your engine, the noise you hear is that little nut clanking around. - Mazda Tech
My 2002 P5 started making the exact same noise last summer when I would turn the AC on. Now the noise is appearing any time I turn the fan on. I'll take a look at metal brackets, but any other ideas.
No major problem. I have an automatic. I had to change the timing belt, for some odd reason my speedometer stopped working, but found out that I accidentally cut a wire installing something, and now I cannot fasten my seat belt normally, a piece of plastic on the inside broke off, and I have to push it harder for it to click. Again, just minor problems, nothing major, especially with all the abuse I put this car through.
Normally you change your timing belt after 2 or 3 years anyways... speedometer and seat belt problem is my own doing. Suspension I changed as well, due to poor road conditions and many pot holes that are somewhat hard to avoid.
The sports tires wear out easily. I've had more flats with this car than any other. As soon as I paid it off, the A/C went out, and now I have this noise. The first four years I had it, it was great, except for the tires wearing out so much.
I read somewhere a while ago that it's actually not any of your fans, radiator or anything. It's actually a metal bracket that is vibrating from underneath. I tried to look into fixing it myself, but after having the time to do so, the clicking sound disappeared.
Well, at least that was the problem I was facing. In regards to the metal bracket. My specific sound would be clicking, and then a few clangings. I think you can compare the sound to a saw-blade rotating.
I had the same exact problem with my Protege 5. I would send it to a mechanic and they said they didnt hear a thing. Only happens in certain temperatures with mine. I heard a lot of people have the same problem, but goes away after a while. I don't have this clicking problem anymore...
I had the black fan replaced behind the radiator (there's a white one and a black one and the noise seemed to be coming from the black one), but unfortunately, I still have the clicking noise. It was a warranty replacement, but still cost me the $100 deductible.
Your car is under more "load" when the a/c is on. The computer knows when it turns on and sends a little more fuel to bring up the RPM's so the car will not idle rough with the extra restriction. It sounds to me like you may have an internal issue with either a spun rod bearing, or spark knock. They both sound similar, but you can tell the difference if you pull the spark plugs and they are really black and full of carbon. Try changing those first, then take it to the stealership!
my 92 proteges compressor did that.

Now it clicks IF the a/c is on, not when just the fan is on. It usually starts after I brake at the first light. What could this be?

Your car is under more "load" when the a/c is on. The computer knows when it turns on and sends a little more fuel to bring up the RPM's so the car will not idle rough with the extra restriction. It sounds to me like you may have an internal issue with either a spun rod bearing, or spark knock. They both sound similar, but you can tell the difference if you pull the spark plugs and they are really black and full of carbon. Try changing those first, then take it to the stealership!
