I quite like this film now. It's got genuine laughs and doesn't slow up too much. I get the 'life affirming' bit but I think we can allow a bit of that because in my view it doesn't go over the top. There is both light and shade to these characters and I don't mind admitting I'm happy for the light to shine that bit brighter in their last few months alive. 7/10
By constantly portraying "the other" as, one trick ponies or dogs that can walk on their hind legs, BBC can continue to sell its master's party line irrespective of the danger to the UK public or even the continuing financial collapse of the average British citizen. BBC can do so without critical examination of the claims of its masters no matter how palpably absurd the claims, because a key part of the sell is that if anyone suffers, its *only* subhuman "others".
Review embodies the concept, "asshole". Hope people see through this fool, and drink deeply of "The buck list" so they can get the infusion of inspiration so desperately needed.
When BBC uses reviewers like this clown, it become obvious that it has completely degenerated into racist madness.
Bet the reviewer would have raved instead of ranted if the protagonist had been a silicon enhanced blond.
@simonpenum The reviewer tries to reduce the Black man, Morgan Friedman, to a mere narrator, ignoring Freedman's formidable acting skills. This is consistent with BBC constant degrading of people not among prototypical British, American, and allied "master races". BBC depicts "the other" as inferior/stupid/criminal/terrorist -- across the board from BBC "news" to BBC comedy. Dehumanization provides necessary rationale for unexamined, ongoing, expanding exploitation, war, looting.
@tom500k But he is just highlighting the fact that Morgan Freeman's character in several films has also served as the narrator and the fact that he is often cast in the role of a kindly, wise older man. He also mocks Nicholsons character's traits. You seem to think because he doesn't mention how good an actor freeman is, he is a racist which is an absurd assumption.
@simonpenum You seem incapable of comprehending written English or writing coherent English. So what's the point of trying to respond to your insult with written, reasoned discourse. Perhaps you might try watching "Educating Rita" and deriving the inspiration for finishing high school and even going to college. Hope springs eternal... Good luck. As it now stands you appear to be a military recruiter's wet dream. Even you deserve a better fate than to become meat for the cannon for the rich.
@tom500k Hmmmm seems like you have an inferiority complex. There's no need to lash out at me for making a valid point Tomboy! I'm not the bully of your youth incarnate. Just someone with an opposing view to yours. You are a reactionary, and a fanatically liberal one at that. I sincerely hope you dont interact with many people directly as it would only end with a visit to the rifle shop and a long, slow climb up the stairs of a clock tower
This doesnt look like the type of film im into so i prob wont bother BUT either way I respect kermode's views as a critic who really knows what he's talking about and has a fantastic serious approach to film criticism. I dont always agree with him (he's wrong about Depp's "Captain Jack"!) but nonetheless his views are really interesting.
I think most people just don't get the movie - yes it's hard to imagine a rich person (Jack's character) sharing a room with a working class blue-collar man, but you have to look past that. With Jack it's about redemption, atonement and reunited, and with Morgan's character it's about the fun he lost out on supporting a family his whole life on a measly existence, and for the 2 together it's about a friendship that is formed. I too would have a dying wish list if I knew I was gonna die.
I think it's a good movie but you should decide for yourself. Don't let any reviewer form your opinion. Because that's all it is..............just an opinion. When it comes to technicalities like acting.....again I don't need a reviewer. I can decide myself whether I liked that part or not and I don't give a shit if it doesn't meet anyone elses standard.
Go see a movie and enjoy it or don't. But don't let anyone else tell you that.
It's not like Roger Ebert bursts into your bedroom at two in the morning with a shotgun demanding that you find Speed 2 funny, is it?
But, if you want to choose a movie to watch out of the many available, then it might be a good idea to consult the opinion of someone who is paid to spend their whole time watching movies and forming opinions about them. We could call them something like 'movie critics'. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea; I think I'll write that down.
haha kermode is great, just says what he wants if its not good he will say it, if it is he wil say that too. sooooo many reviews just get it upside down. kermode is crakin!

@tom500k As someone who manages to misspell Morgran Freeman's name twice, in two different ways, in their defense of the actor's role ...
I have no end to that sentence. Just wanted to point out the arsehattery.
