Most of the Nazis ways of killing were far less violent then the Romans were. The Nazis have the title as far as amount of people killed, but the Romans hold the title for the brutal ways in which people were killed.

English government had to keep the German offerings in the German-Polish conflict secret from the English public to be able to escalate the conflict into a war without civil uproar.
Hitler even offered to reinstall an independent Polish nation on 6. October 1939, if only France and England took back their declarations of war.
He was the last one offering peace, but England and France preferred to escalate a local conflict into a world war again.

The invasion of russia was planed to be at the summertime, but Italy had problems with the greek invasion, therefore the russia invasion got a delay of over 3 months!
And Hitler was insane, he didnt listen to his Officers.
Some of them knew it was to late, they also knew that with every day that passes, the Red Army becomes stronger and stronger!
In 1940, for example, the Red Army was pretty weak.
And then the winter came a month, to early.

The Balkan situation wasn't only that Mussolini's glorious reassertion of the Roman Empire in Greece had . . . 'got stuck'. :-) (Good ole Duce!) It was also that Hitler's puppet in Yugoslavia, the Regent, Prince Paul, was overthrown, and Yugoslavia entered the war on Britain's side.

My great-aunt was in the Waffen-SS.
She was a nurse somewhere near the eastern front, as far as I know.
Her life was a living hell after '45, just knowing from the little she ever talked about it to anyone.
She died of a heart attack, barely over 40 years old.
What I know though, even the SS was not as evil and murderous as it is pictured today.
