@TheJaredjared It has no name. The song is just something I put together in Band in a Box. I think it was G Minor toC Minor back to G Minor and then D and back to G Minor. A Minor chord sounds sad. Thanks.
I think one of the reasons Californians are a little 'weird' or 'out there' is because they live their lives with the constant subconscious realization that... 'at any moment, this could all drop into the Pacific.' And not even Arnold could stop it. ...Nice vid, Tom. Your insights, as always, are well presented and appreciated.
There was one family in California whose house slid down a hill. They did not realize what happened until they went outside. The China Earthquake does sound like a horrible situation.
About one hundred times as many people died in the Kobe quake in 1995 as in the Northridge quake. Most of urban Japan is lots of small buildings crammed tight together with powerlines overhead.
Tokyo's just about overdue for the next big one. I live on the eighth floor of a skinny, flexible building. Even the weak, distant quakes make it wobble. I've got a pack and boots by the foot of my bed. Reminds me, I need to dig through and replace the water and food parts. Been a few years.
Yes. I think the Kobe Earthquake was one year to the day after the Northridge Quake and approximately the same magnitude. If the Northridge Quake had been under some of the downtown skyscrapers or old brick buildings and in the daytime it could have been much worse. Good luck there.
Wow Tom, well done and very informative. I moved back out here the year after that quake and have of course not experienced any big ones since the VA one in maybe 72 or 73. But everyone says we're due, so maybe I'll think that over a bit more. My camping gear is always ready so I'm good with that anyway.
Thanks. It is wise I think to be prepared because if it is not an earthquake, it could be a storm or wildfire. There are lots of things for which we should be prepared.
Hi, Joe. Welcome back. I am glad to see you doing videos again. The Northridge Quake was definitely The Big One for some people. I had driven over one of the collapsed freeway areas the day before. A motorcycle policeman died when his motorcycle plummeted with the freeway about 60 feet. It was scary for awhile. I can imagine what it is like in China today.
wow Tom, very informative video regarding the different type of structures, and sobering footage. Like so many things in life that we've never experienced first hand, we take much for granted. makes us think about preparedness. when I first moved to OH from NY I didn't give much thought to tornadoes but when the tv is showing watches/warnings, I am much more prepared now. One night I did sleep clothed w/the dogs in bed on their leashes just in case I needed to make a mad dash for the basement.
Hi, Susan, I know what you mean about the storms. I have never seen a funnel cloud up close coming in my direction. I have not felt that wrath of nature. I did start sleeping with my clothes nearby before the Northridge Quake. I was dressed and outside within a minute after the ground stopped shaking for awhile.
True. The smaller quakes were not too bad but the 5 and 6 and bigger were too scary for me. I definitely do not want any part of an 8 like China had today.
i was just in china for a month and were were in sichuan Chongqing and Chengdu and duyujinag one of the school that we went to collapsed with kids inside. it is very sad
Yes it is. That could happen here in the Midwest or almost anywhere. The Northridge Quake was early AM when people were not shopping so many were saved by not being where mall parking structures and stores collapsed. I am glad you were not there in China when it happened.
Thanks for the reminder, Tom. I was in the S.F. area in '89 when the Bay bridge fell in to the bay. Now I'm in the Northwest waiting for Old Faithful to blow. But, we're ready.
I remember watching that on TV at Paramount Studios. We were getting ready to film an episode of Dear John so it had to be a Tuesday. We were watching the coverage on TV and I was very surprised to find out fewer people were on that freeway that collapsed on itself than what had first been thought. The NorthWest Quake is being predicted now. I hope it doesn't happen soon.
Thank you for this video Tom and all the pictures you included. It really emphasises how serious an earthquake can be and the precautions that can be taken
Thanks, Matthew. I was getting this video ready over the past few days. I was almost ready to upload it last night. I dcided I would do it this morning. I was very surprised to hear about the big quake in China, It was almost 8 on the Richter scale.
what is the name of the song playing in this video?

san francishco is supposed to be the worst place for eathquakes.
KarloR27 3 years ago
It probably gets more large quakes than any other major US city.
Featureman 3 years ago
Yeah there was once a very bad one in san francisco in the 1900s.

We are very lucky in the UK, thank god we don't have earthquakes. It must be a very scary experience.

While living in California back in the 60's,
I felt many tremors, but never got to experience a real earthquake.
Guess we can't have everything, huh?
