Chanting My glories, endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion. (Bhagavad -gita)
Deva Premal, your voice is soothing which reflects devotion, I'm sure that the Gods listed to your devotional singing. May all good fortune be with you always.
I am a Falun Dafa practitioner. Falun Dafa (or Falun Gong) is a cultivation system in the Buddha School based on the principles of the Universe: Truth, Compassion, Forbearance. Since 1999 it has been brutally persecuted by the CCP in China.
Wow!! Amazing rendition of Brahma nandam. I'm a traditional Indian and its rare to come across someone with such piety and devotion in their voice. One has to be fortunate and gifted. Excellent job Deva and Mitten!!
I have to go with Rush on the idea of enlightenment, "How can anybody be enlightened/Truth is after all so poorly lit". I guess it's because I'm a strong agnostic, and maybe it sounds harsh, but to have faith in anything existing or not is part of the reason truth evades us. It's seen through someone else's (Jesus, Muhammed, Ramanuja, Sankara, Siddhartha Gautama) unproven perspective.
That said, Deva and Miten do an excellent job. I tend to listen to bass-heavy music, but they are great.
@DethLeppard666 Nothing can be proved without realization of the truth. This is the first step of the journey for truth. What you think you have proof for is actually based on prejudices. Mind keeps you fooled and it doesn't want to think in depth. You don't need Jesus and Buddha for this if you meditate and endeavor to find the truth yourself.
@OneKnightAffair I've always had an odd worldview, and there's not much I can do about it; I do a lot of introspection, but the truth is still a long way off. All I can do is take what I know and go with it. Music is a great medium for exploring thought. Bands like Rush are my usual choice, partly because I'm a bassist, partly because I can relate to it more than ancient chants thousands of years out of context. But this music is good when I need to get back to basics; we all do, sometimes.
everyone sees only their own reflection in a clear mirror..... if you see sexuality and greedy materialism in a divine voice reciting the gayatri mantra....man .... you have a major obstacle to get over......

Was surprised to see negative comments below about these two. Never heard of them before a week ago, but she has a very beautiful voice, sings with reverence and they're rewarded for applying their talents and showing diverse views of spirit to all. What's the problem? Thoroughly enjoyed this & all their vids; a class act I'm glad I found.
Think about it , with her voice she could easily be singing some throw away "pop" song and making millions. I have no problem with artists making a proffit from their work especially when what they do touches others profoundly and in addition helps keep traditional art forms alive. Ravi Shankar, Krishna Das etc all have made a good deal of money. so what? have they not worked to perfect their craft and do they not offer something of value?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do they donate the profit to a higher cause? It's nice to share and keep alive traditional songs of worship. But shouldn't everyone be participating who goes? Since when did worship become a spectator sport? I know I know, just stiring the pot to keep us all sharp.
To answer your question: A lot of Buddhist monasteries invite people to view their prayer sessions- I know of one Soto Zen Buddhist monastery in the White Plains NY area (I'm from CT). They encourage people to come and watch at any time. I've never been, but I have heard people say it's neat to see what else is out there.
As for Deva and Miten, this isn't horribly different from a gospel choir going on tour if you think about it (but in my opinion, they are WAY better than a gospel choir).
Go to a concert you'll find that they are inviting everyone's participation.
I have & experienced great bliss from 'worshipping' along with them. At the first one, they took time to connect with every single person who wanted to thank them for the joy we felt. They were still there talking with a woman in a wheelchair who couldnt' come forward in the rush when I left. The lasting feeling was of pure love. These guys are the real deal. Sanskrit mantras will do that for you :)
My love to you all, please allow me to say a few things, Please dont comment on other people`s spirituality, please realise we are all from the same source yet in a diffrient forms, People call me a hindu, yet im in love with every culture in the world, every religion bears the truth, every people, every nation, every beleifs, My love to you all, please disregard any attempts by others to segregate as they do not understand, please dont hate them either, they will reach the stage. Om shanti
Every culture appropriates from others. This stems from basic contact, as well as appreciation. Most people don't practice styles they dislike. Yes, there is a line between doing what you like and being phony (a New Yorker singing country music w/a false twang, well-off WASPs acting like homies, etc.). No one, though, s/b restricted from doing what they love or performing if others enjoy it just b/c it isn't "native" to them. I want to learn the Chinese flute and to belly dance, and I'm from MA!
more fake westerners selling the beauty of the eastern spiritual tradition for their own profit. there is nothing beautiful in this. millions of spiritual seekers strive for spiritual goals while living and working in the world, in the world but not of it. there is more beauty in their longing and struggles and their sincerity than this commercialised, insincere drivel done for nothing more than material gain and worldly glory. this is the complete opposite of true spirituality
And what qualifies you to make such judgements? Do you know Deva and Miten personally? I'm in a band, and we write very Asian-sounding metal. Now we don't try to be spiritual, but would playing my bass to traditional shamisen music be so horrible? I do it because Asian culture, music, and extreme metal are three of my passions. And it's personal to me, as I have an aunt from China. What would make you think Deva and Miten don't connect to their music the same way?
My friend one thing I won't adhere to is political correctness, especially in the 'spiritual' field. Using the term crusader only highlights how immature you are. It is very PC at the moment and all the rage. It serves to highlight how advanced and open minded the wielder of the term is, particularly when he is a westerner, so congrats on that. Again divinity relates to the true Self not the ego self which is the only thing she is worshipping here by showing the world how devotedly she chants.
In addition to this she prostitutes these ancient and sacred mantras for the sake of her own worldly wealth & glory. I have no problem with her making millions if she could as an ORIGINAL musician, no problem at all. But singing ancient mantras with a sickeningly plastic expression of joy, contentment & bliss on her face is nauseating in the extreme. She's a FAKE! You do realise there are plenty of fakes in the spiritual field. Just because she has a 'benign' expression doesnt make her genuine.
Oh, so where's your music? I haven't seen you on the scene anywhere. And yes, I make my own music- I'm a bassist/shamisen player/vocalist in a band, and we fuse Asian music with metal. Also, I'm not at all politically correct, but I don't feel any need to ram it down people's throats. Just relax, and go listen to whatever you care to. If this doesn't satisfy you, find something that does.
I do believe you have a right to express how you feel about Deva Premal. Question though - while yes these mantras could be considered sacred - are they not for sharing? And is there not something sacred about using your voice for bringing a measure of joy to people? Some of your comments show that you care about spiritual integrity, which is great, but f you don't like what she's doing though, just move on. What nauseates you might be a moment of insight for someone else. And vice versa.
My friend this was 6 months ago. All I was trying to get across is that there are so many false 'gurus' & other 'spiritual teachers' around & they actually give all the real ones a bad name. You see there is such a depth of genuine beauty in the Indian spiritual tradition, in the Vedas, the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Kashmiri Shaivism etc etc.The Truth contained in such scriptures gives meaning to my life and I can't help but get angry when I see fakes exploiting the truth for worldly gain.
I just don't believe it is right for one who is still seeking to try and teach others about the truth. Only a genuine Master, can instruct seekers in such matters, certainly NOT this sexualized lady who has samsara written all over her. I DON"T mean to preach or judge after all I AM FAR FROM PERFECT, but I acknowledge I am only on the path and still a long way from the destination but I do not portray myself publically in such a holier than thou manner as this lady does.
Thanks for replying, even after 6 months. From interviews and biographies of Deva Premal I've read over the past few days, it seems that 'worldly gain' is not high on the list of priorities. Her father chanted the Gayatri mantra to her in the womb and as she was born, and her life (like yours perhaps) seems to have been profoundly nourished by that experience - and the music is a means of sharing that joy.
I'm not sure she's trying to lead anyone - rather just being open to the spirit, however one might phrase that, and the spirit leading through her. Of course there's always the problems of celebrity worship, but then I wonder if that's more the responsibility of the audience - most people with insight or charisma or talent have a following - even the most enlightened. Anyway, warm wishes on your journey!
Fair enough. I could be wrong, I have been many times before. If so, and this lady is a genuine devotee then perhaps I have been too harsh and I extend my apologies for that.
I love playing my bass and singing to Deva and Miten, although I'm not so sure they'd like what I do to their music. Being a metal bassist/vocalist by trade, I play a very detuned bass, and my voice is very deep and harsh. But Deva and Miten are incredible, the only other music that touched me like this is Megadeth, Into Eternity, and (especially) Rush. Although I chose strong agnosticism at 16 (2 years ago), I try to take the messages of these chants to heart.

...being agnostic means you somewhere question the existence of the bigger world, the bigger truth..either consciously or sub sonsciously...
and, to question about the higher truth means, unknowingly u r actually onto a journey to find what is this bigger truth..
which does mean that you are already onto a great spiritual journey..
so keep on going my friend...question and you wud find your answers....take care

oh man, don´t talk about brothers and sisters
if you don´t have the love to accept everyone as equal, if you don´t see god in all you don´t
see god at all. clean your own house first before you teach others!

Salutations to the inner guru, the inner
guiding light. Who is the embodiment of pure delight, Who is the giver of supreme happiness.Who is beyond the dualities of this material world; Who is as infinite as the sky. Who is the sole aspiration and goal of life;Who is unique, eternal, pure, unwavering.
Who sees with the eyes of wisdom;
Who is beyond emotions and beyond the
three gunas (binding aspects of our nature)
- Sattva (bliss), Rajas (animal instinct) and
Tamas (lethargy).(Manish Vyas)
