You know what? If I had been the middle contestant on "Wheel" that day, and the first player happened to be a total idiot and called the wrong letter, I would have spun the wheel, and even if I DID land on $5,000, I would have chose the wrong letter, too. That way, Terry would have regained her turn, spun, guessed the correct letter, solved the puzzle and WON her $62,000+.... Oh, and during the break, I would have looked her square in the face, winked, and whispered "You're welcome..." ;-)
The way I remembered this puzzle going down was the woman solving it and actually saying "The thrill of history...", but I guess I remember it wrong. I am 34 now, but this thing is one of those moments that stuck in my head for decades.
I wonder if Terry has seen this episode here and has looked back at how totally stupid she was for losing all that money? Probably has to be the most suspenseful and exciting Wheel of Fortune clip on YouTube. And do I feel sorry for her, no. The greedy bitch got just what she deserved. Either that or she really was that stupid.
I watched this episode when it first aired. For years I've told people about it. I can now show this video to people I know, to prove that it really happened. It's one of the most surreal moments in game-show history.

I saw the Agony of Defeat round when it was broadcast and remember it still. You can't invent this stuff: an amazing run spoiled by the most common consonant in the English language--leading to a puzzle solution that defined the whole episode.
Do you have the Speed-up Round where she loses $10000 more for a total of $72400? That makes me cry to see anyone lose that much money, especially in 1985!
I saw this puzzle also, i'm like...WHAT...can they do that?

That woman who keeps chosing to spin the wheel is kinda hot.

The last two lines of the puzzle were fully revealed. How many quotes end with "....and the agony of defeat?"

"$49,000 just waiting to be won..." *Contestant almost earns $62,400* ...What would have happened?

@roflcoptersoysoy - The opening was from a different episode, which aired 2 years before the "Agony of Defeat" one.
