It took me a while to realize that the WKF style of kumite is little more than tag....with all their bouncing and in and out attack retreat fighting....these old timers would put a whole lot of hurt on the new kids!
Why does everytime there's a karate vid there are pages of arguments with everyone talking about their science on where it comes influence and all ...
in ancient times, in okinawa a chinese man or monk, taught the okinawa people kungfu, these style of kungfu was named in okinawa "karate" meaning "the chinese style" then later it came a man called Gichin Funakoshi, who learned okinawa karate, and created shotokan, later he brought it to japan and gave a new meaning to karate, it meant "empty hands", then later it came Mas oyama that was born in korea but refused in his own country. to be continued
@jin54363 First, Okinawa had their own style called Te (Hand) which was later influenced by their trade partners in China (Kung Fu). After Okinawa was invaded by Japan, this is where the major Japanese roots start. Those are the connections in a nutshell.
(part 2) so Mas oyama decided to be japanese, he practiced shotokan karate, and some other korean martial arts, then later he developed the kyokushin karate.
the samurai of japan had a fighting style that they used when they didn't had a weapon called jujutsu.
@555hansy what jin54363 says is very! wrong.. karate means empty (kara) hand (te), so without weapons. it spread from okinawa to japan and after WWII it became popular in the west aswell, cause many american soliders were living on okinawa for many years. teakwondo is based on (shotokan)karate, but the style changed quite a bit; today its mostly about kicks, although it was about kicks, punches etc, just like karate. the different karate styles today mainly differ in terms of kata/kumite...
@becs5120 I had thought that it was unclear which was intended - due to no written records of the art (Naha-te, Shou-te etc) being kept, and the shared symbol for both 'Chinese' and 'empty' - until Gichin Funakoshi decided 'empty hand' fit better. I'm sure he gives his thoughts in Karate-Do Nyumon.
@XxInvocationxX Everyone here is wrong!!!!!!! Oyama studied Shotokan, Goju and Western boxing! Those styles are not taken in total into kyokushinkai. What we see in practice are western style punches thrown to vital areas, Muay-thai leg kicks and knees, Muay-thai roundouse, teakwondo ax kicks, and many kicks, blocks, and punches modified by Oyama himself to create what he saw as the "strongest karate". Even the long gi pants are some what unique to kyokushinkai.
@555hansy It's a combination of Goju and Shotokan. I think the more varied kicking developed as a result of not being able to use hands to opponent's heads, which forced them to get more creative with their legs.
@maofas Its not a combination of Goju and Shotokan!!!! They happen to be the two styles mainly studied by Oyama, but kyokushin clearly has borrowed heavy from Muay-Thai (leg kicks, knees, a particular kind of roundhouse) and western boxing (the obvious punches).
@genious4real Obviously over time it evolved, but those were the two styles Oyama combined to initially create it. And while I do think Muay Thai had an influence, I don't think it was nearly as strong as some people assume. They already did lowkicks before Oyama sent his people over to Thailand. You can't clinch and knee under Kyokushin rules, which makes for different tactics. And if MT influenced their punching it sure doesn't come out in their ruleset.
@maofas I said that Western Boxing influenced Oyama's punching! Also, at one time punches to the head were allowed until injuries became too serious. The low kicks kyokushin does cannot be said to be from any other influence but Muay-Thai because of the downward motion as well as the complete follow through. That manner is not found any where in shotokan and for sure, not Goju! Even the fighting stance is obviously inspired by western boxing!!!! That point cannot be argued in the least.
@genious4real So what would you listen to? A link to a Kyokushin forum where various Kyokushin guys explain the difference between Kyokushin and Muay Thai round kick? A video of round kicks from Kyokushin tournaments where you can see chambers and no downward angle. Lol, just let me know.
@maofas I would listen to my own experience training under Shigeru Oyama who taught the same kicks!!!!! Please do more than read!!!! Take just 2 classes in Kyokushin and get back to me. Muay-thai does chamber the roundhouse it simply does not snap the kick back but drives it through like a bat as opposed to a whip.
@genious4real No, muay thai generally does not chamber the round kick. Some camps do, probably because of TKD influence (TKD is huge in Thailand), but when 99% of people say Muay Thai round kick they're picturing the no-chamber straight-leg.
@maofas I have a martial arts channel that will be dedicated to my fighting methods and those I respect in the arts. I will comment no longer from "genious4real" on fighting issues. CLEVELEFS will be used for that purpose.
@maofas Now, on the Thai roundhouse kick, It most certainly does get chambered!!! Just about the only kick that I have seen that does not is the TKD axe kick. If you see the proper execution of the thai roundhouse you will see that that the knee gets chambered, the hip gets turned over and unless it goes to the head, the leg is dropped down in a downward motion agianst the target.
@xRiiSe Your comment said it all genius. No one who actually has experience in MMA would be so foolish to think these guys would "tear it up" in the UFC.
High school wrestling experience would give you the same conclusion.
Boxing experience would also give you the same conclusion.
You sir, are an idiot with delusions akin to martial arts myth.
I don't NEED to know you personally to know what you say is inexperienced and foolish, which makes you a fucking idiot.
@crewifyable That goes for any language you are not fluent in. Saying "Hai" is simply an acknowledgement you understand, or hear what someone says. No different than yea, uh hu, ok, etc. in English. This is an excellent bout. Well matched, and highly skilled. You can tell it’s Finals, they are both exhausted, battered, and bloodied. Looks like Kagawa Shihan might have sprained, or broke his hand, Maybe.
@belovac Sur ce point la je suis d'accord avec toi, je fais du karaté, et c'est vrai qu'aujourd'hui la facon de combattre est totalement differente ... seuls les contacts reels manquent :'(
the premise behind it in competition is that your muscles are already warmed up and active so it is easier for your to jump for a point rather than launching an attack from a "calm" stance.
it is also a method for psyching your opponent to move and show an opening.
you have to realize that when you get to the higher ranks, the likelihood of those "fools" doing anything "stupid" is very, very slim.
@mike123asd Yes i know, i`ve been a Karate man since i was 12 now i am 35 and i can tell you that with all the rules that the WKF puts in competition they take the beauty and the true meaning of this art that is self defense.
I train with karatekas much younger that me black belts 23 to 29 years old they do kumite like WKF but they are not used to feel contact because of their training focused on competition! If they feel contact they run like rabbits!
@superjedimaster01 For all the talk about so called respect by traditionalists, it seem that it only has to go one way. Modern karate-ka have to respect us and our legends while we can say whatever we want. Look at the competitors objectively. None of these would be able to win against the likes of Aghayev or Biamonti.
@aiyer1989 I watched some videos of both those fighters. While they are both outstanding competitors and incredibly athletic, I fail to see why you think neither Yahara or Kagawa would be able to defeat them.
@superjedimaster01 The rules have changed. Now if you get hit in the head it's viewed as your own fault... you should have blocked. A lot of people have had to toughen up, fast.
1:26 to 2:05 all one commentator says is "Hyy...Hyy...Hyy" He says it like 12 times in a row lol and he says it in different tones too, pretty funny lol
The instructors course that Kagawa Sensei is the chief instructor for is taught by Yamaguchi Sensei - who some would consider a REAL karate-ka - his fights are just as hard core. Yamaguchi students, such as Nagaki or Nihey Sensei are just as tough to fight and watch. So I think Kagawa sensei has passed on his knowledge and ballet ways to the next generation. REAL Karate is still out there - change your club.
uhm i see....we seem to be talking not of the same...there is was (dont know if he passed away) an Yamaguchi Sensei i think his nickname was the Cat...
what i was trying to say is that Kagawa Sensei as the JKA karate school behind him, the same for Asai Sensei, so the techniques are equal...
i never had the chance to train with Kagawa Sensei but i would like to even belonging to JKA.
yes, yamaguchi sensei did the jka instructors course. he left with kagawa, ishimine, asai, kanayama to form jks. yamaguchi was 5 times all japan champion. adept at both kumite and kata.he trains everyday, taking classes, instructors courses, seminars.essentially the technical director-if you get a chance to see him he is excellent.
Even now, at the age they are, I wouldnt like to fight either of them, however, if it came to it, fighting Kagawa would probably be more favourable...simply because I dont think he'd give you as much of a mauling lol
These are 2 of the very greatest technicians. Watch other clips of teachings and demos and that much is clear. They have each reached the absolute zenith of skill. On this clip remember it is purely ritualized combat, not a street fight. Trust me that even at 70, these would be the last men on earth to tangle with.
This guys are one of the top JKA instructors worldwide and some of you dare to judge some of the competitor's / instructors. Mikio Yahara and Masao Kagawa. I personally say is talk about it but is not easy dare and practice. I'm not comparing styles all I wanna to say is to have some respect for both instructors and their tecniques!
He hasnt made just two mistakes. Look at most of his videos. He makes major mistakes.
He looks good when he demonstrates or teaches techniques but under pressure he makes a lot of mistakes which would have cost him if that was anything goes style of fighting.
I know I'm wasting my breath on you, but if it were anything goes fighting, he wouldn't just be throwing gyaku zuki and kazame zuki. His opponents ass would be on the ground and he would be pummeling him.
Vale tudo is anything goes.Fought bareknuckle to submission or K.O.
And judging by the crappy way at 0.52 your man 112 throws that right hand it makes a mockery of the technique training he does.
That is total garbage.
No 112 again.
1.38 he throws/ over comittes a stupid reverse punch to the body where the opponent gets a 90 degree angle (Tai sabaki)on him hits him with a left snap punch but no right hook.
1.38 he throws/ over comittes a stupid reverse punch to the body where the opponent gets a 90 degree angle (Tai sabaki)on him hits him with a left snap punch but no right hook.
(mawashi zuki)
Why Because hooks arent allowed in competition?
So ok you tell me and stating where on the video he connects with a decent technique?
The guy with the number 112 on the back of his gi?
well the two mistakes he makes every now and then are nothing compared to vale tudo fighters many mistakes during their fights and thats pretty much all i have to say to you.
I am sure I saw the look of disbelief from an opponent as to how easy he was to beat
Sure some vale tudo guys make mistakes, so do boxers and no doubt other fighters but some dont try to market themselves as something special and charge silly amounts to train people.
Like I said all bluff front and impressive technique training but when it comes down to it under pressure it all goes wrong and most things this guy does a basic boxer wouldnt do. It comes from installing garbage techniques in to the muscle memory.
Apart from a couple of other JKA guys the ones I see who get it right were Nakayama.
Tell you what Mr Braydon ask them to post a video of them doing two by 50kg dumbell presses for reps above their heads.
Chances are they couldnt get one up.
Can you?
Interesting considering Trad karate included a form of strength/ conditioning training. But this isnt trad karate it is a Japanese budo art of one point scoring sold to the unsuspecting public.
gudging by the fact itself that you could reply that fast would mean your not taking the nessicary time to train to be good enough to win against such fast people. and im sorry, im not trying to be rude, but ive never heard of vale tudo, what do they focus on and what are their strengths? just for my own knowledge, please and thank you.
Opinions would differ. One thing never seen in opinions is the fact that unrestricted karate technique includes strikes to the throat, tecticles, spine, eye balls, the neck, various points of arteries, nerves and includes bone breaking, biting, ear removal, violent upsetting of balance and strangulation. Organized fighting limits technique and, in fact, means real karate is limited to those that train in real karate. Kagawa would not take a beating even if it meant death, he is Nippon bushi.
go fight them right now, im gunna laugh when you find yourself on the ground. im not being cocky, but shotokan looks like their scared of eachother, but really they are just timing their moves right and exploding with all their body behind each move.
Stupid comment. This is Shotokan, you genius. The idea is to pull the punches in the last second, which these guys do with amazing control. This is not Kyokushin, where they punch full force, but spare the head (unrealistic).
Still, people do get hit in Shotokan and are supposed to eat it without complaining.
Look, I wasn`t try to brag. I just happened to live in Tokyo and sign up at the nearest Karate dojo... which (unbeknowst to me) was the JKA hombu at the time. So my teachers where Kagawa, Abe, Yamaguchi, Richard Amos, Isaka, etc etc.
Saying I was sparring with Kagawa would be misleading; more like being allowed to take some potshots which he laughed off.
Still, I got to see what power these guys have. Seeking Kagawa warming by kicking the sandbag to the ceiling is something you don´t forget.
don't worry i didn't see it as you were bragging. More that you were just being open about your experiences training with the highest status of karateka.
Wow, they don't use boxing gloves or similar. One little mistake by a couple of inches could injure someone seriously. Pretty scary.
Other martial arts goes all-out, but with the gloves they use it's relatively safe. I mean two idiots can fight each others without getting injuries as long as they have gloves. But this karate thingy requires some serious skill.
PaulGappyNorris is nothing but a keyboard warrior. He doesn't have a clue regarding real fighting. Goes under a variety of aliases on other forums (Mandy, Yoda, etc.)and is only good for taking the piss out of people whose skill and ability is far greater than his own.
He tried to ingratiate himself on Steve Morris' forum, but Mr. Morris could tell that
PaulgappyNorris wasn't genuine, so all PaulgappyNorris could do was spend hours paraphrasing Steve's biography to take the piss.
these men are not playing. they are just that good that they are able to strike with full kime and end 1mm of their intended target. Try fight them before disrespecting them, and be sure to have your plastic underpants on, cause you will s... yourself
HAHAHA, there are a lot of guys in here that realjy think karate is that one they see in the movies!!! Don't you know who these guys in the video are?? get informed please! Stop showing your ignorance like that! Who the hell are you to say such things about these Senseis... this is KARATE
I guess you are just another one adding to the fuel...Obviously you don't see how fast this guys are moving and the techniques that are been executed. Is a shame, althought that is the problem with modern karate now a days, that unless you are practioner yourself or a relative of someone who practices it you don't see the techniques...Maybe we just need to gear up more i.e. helmets and chest protectors and go at it full blast or at least semi-contact.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's the problem... you really do think it's real karate? This is pretentious 'air-tag' nonesense that has no basis of reality regarding fight strategy, technique or principles!
PaulGappyNorris, thank you for your reply. The JKA guys certainly do know how to fight. For example, Yahara's security operations in Japan have entailed real combat. Also, top British karateka such as Terry O'Neill have a high regard for Yahara's fighting ability.
Given that many high ranking Shotokan people in the Liverpool area had practical experience in nightclub security work, do you think that they would give their respect
let me tell explain to you. these karate masters expecialy Yahara have trained their entire lives, they have mastered techniques that can kill people. i bet that if yahara hit someone hard enough he can kill them, or make their death come sooner. the reason they are sparring like that is because if they went full out, there would be someone who dies or gets injured, and now adays its not yahara and the old sensei that made that decision its the scared type of karate fighters.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, they haven't mastered techniques that can kill people. They have mastered the 'sport' of their karate. It's a bullshite argument to write "if they went full out, there would be someone who dies or gets injured" wake up!! It is 'air-tag' crap, sport, tournament, nonesense - nothing to do with fighting. YES, if they put some armour on and went all out, it would have some value....
i do the same kind of sparring and its definitely not air tag we go all out there's been broken feet cheek bones anything on the head you name it so far i've gotten a couple bloody noses broken my shin and still won and have been knocked completely out so you should really get your facts together before you make such a bold statement by the way both these guys would destroy you and anyone you've ever met im sure of it
If you think it's air-tag, then go out there and compete with 'em. I guarantee you won't do it a second time. Or are you one of those keyboard warriors...mushi bushi (mouth warrior)?
The boy can't see how fast these guys are, and that the rules are semi-contact so people wouldn't get killed on tournaments. Let him watch Hulk Hogan instead...lol
It took me a while to realize that the WKF style of kumite is little more than tag....with all their bouncing and in and out attack retreat fighting....these old timers would put a whole lot of hurt on the new kids!

These guys are the REAL karate-ka, not the ballet dancers nowadays.
MMilon 3 years ago 2
That's a very sweeping statement.
Good training

yes but sensei kagawa has done the JKA instructors course and "belonged" to the JKA i think...
hmeida25 2 years ago
Yes but Yamaguchi Sensei has done the instructors course and still does it every day - whereas most people do it and leave.
Kagawa Sensei is chief instructor to the JKS.
WestBfella 2 years ago
uhm i see....we seem to be talking not of the same...there is was (dont know if he passed away) an Yamaguchi Sensei i think his nickname was the Cat...
what i was trying to say is that Kagawa Sensei as the JKA karate school behind him, the same for Asai Sensei, so the techniques are equal...
i never had the chance to train with Kagawa Sensei but i would like to even belonging to JKA.
OSS
hmeida25 2 years ago
You mean Gogen Yamaguchi Sensei, I meant Takashi Yamaguchi Sensei who is also ex-JKA. And followed Kagawa sensei to the JKS.
I think he did his instructors course with the JKA? But I'm not sure.
WestBfella 2 years ago
i really dont know...check at the JKA website
hmeida25 2 years ago
yes, yamaguchi sensei did the jka instructors course. he left with kagawa, ishimine, asai, kanayama to form jks. yamaguchi was 5 times all japan champion. adept at both kumite and kata.he trains everyday, taking classes, instructors courses, seminars.essentially the technical director-if you get a chance to see him he is excellent.

These are 2 of the very greatest technicians. Watch other clips of teachings and demos and that much is clear. They have each reached the absolute zenith of skill. miamiice 3 years ago 2
This guys are one of the top JKA instructors worldwide and some of you dare to judge some of the competitor's / instructors. Mikio Yahara and Masao Kagawa. I personally say is talk about it but is not easy dare and practice. I'm not comparing styles all I wanna to say is to have some respect for both instructors and their tecniques!
miamiice 3 years ago 3
He hasnt made just two mistakes. Look at most of his videos. He makes major mistakes.
He looks good when he demonstrates or teaches techniques but under pressure he makes a lot of mistakes which would have cost him if that was anything goes style of fighting.
wannabeebee 3 years ago
I know I'm wasting my breath on you, but if it were anything goes fighting, he wouldn't just be throwing gyaku zuki and kazame zuki. His opponents ass would be on the ground and he would be pummeling him.
skimarcus 2 years ago 2
Vale tudo is anything goes.Fought bareknuckle to submission or K.O.
And judging by the crappy way at 0.52 your man 112 throws that right hand it makes a mockery of the technique training he does.
That is total garbage.
No 112 again.
1.38 he throws/ over comittes a stupid reverse punch to the body where the opponent gets a 90 degree angle (Tai sabaki)on him hits him with a left snap punch but no right hook.
(mawashi zuki)
Why Because hooks arent allowed in competition?

I have a life. I have pointed out the complete begginers flaws in what the guy does under pressure. but seen as you didnt read it here it is again
And judging by the crappy way at 0.52 your man 112 throws that right hand it makes a mockery of the technique training he does.
wannabeebee 3 years ago
well the two mistakes he makes every now and then are nothing compared to vale tudo fighters many mistakes during their fights and thats pretty much all i have to say to you.
lukkiop 3 years ago
It even cost him in ippon matches.
I am sure I saw the look of disbelief from an opponent as to how easy he was to beat
Sure some vale tudo guys make mistakes, so do boxers and no doubt other fighters but some dont try to market themselves as something special and charge silly amounts to train people.
wannabeebee 3 years ago
ha ha i laugh at ignorance
gjerlev1 3 years ago
I laugh at you, either you cant read or see what the guy is doing.
Or do you throw crappy right hands as he does?
wannabeebee 3 years ago
Like I said all bluff front and impressive technique training but when it comes down to it under pressure it all goes wrong and most things this guy does a basic boxer wouldnt do. It comes from installing garbage techniques in to the muscle memory.
Apart from a couple of other JKA guys the ones I see who get it right were Nakayama.
wannabeebee 3 years ago
I think demonstration of technique.
So why allow it to get published?

Opinions would differ. One thing never seen in opinions is the fact that unrestricted karate technique includes strikes to the throat, tecticles, spine, eye balls, the neck, various points of arteries, nerves and includes bone breaking, biting, ear removal, violent upsetting of balance and strangulation. Organized fighting limits technique and, in fact, means real karate is limited to those that train in real karate. Kagawa would not take a beating even if it meant death, he is Nippon bushi.

brayden12345 3 years ago 4
Stupid comment. This is Shotokan, you genius. The idea is to pull the punches in the last second, which these guys do with amazing control. This is not Kyokushin, where they punch full force, but spare the head (unrealistic).
Still, people do get hit in Shotokan and are supposed to eat it without complaining.
Derukugi2 3 years ago 5
Both of these guys are legends in Shotokan.
You think they are fake, try sparring with Kagawa. (I have.)
Derukugi2 3 years ago

LOL... I served as his target practice. He does not go full throttle when sparring with lower ranks. (Still got some bruises though.)
Derukugi2 3 years ago
thats awesome kagawa's a true legend.
lukkiop 3 years ago
Look, I wasn`t try to brag. I just happened to live in Tokyo and sign up at the nearest Karate dojo... which (unbeknowst to me) was the JKA hombu at the time. So my teachers where Kagawa, Abe, Yamaguchi, Richard Amos, Isaka, etc etc.
Saying I was sparring with Kagawa would be misleading; more like being allowed to take some potshots which he laughed off.
Still, I got to see what power these guys have. Seeking Kagawa warming by kicking the sandbag to the ceiling is something you don´t forget.
Derukugi2 3 years ago 3
don't worry i didn't see it as you were bragging. More that you were just being open about your experiences training with the highest status of karateka.
lukkiop 3 years ago

That's the problem... you really do think it's real karate? This is pretentious 'air-tag' nonesense that has no basis of reality regarding fight strategy, technique or principles!
PaulGappyNorris 4 years ago
PaulGappyNorris, thank you for your reply. The JKA guys certainly do know how to fight. For example, Yahara's security operations in Japan have entailed real combat. Also, top British karateka such as Terry O'Neill have a high regard for Yahara's fighting ability.
Given that many high ranking Shotokan people in the Liverpool area had practical experience in nightclub security work, do you think that they would give their respect
to someone who couldn't fight for real?
escrimaguy 4 years ago 3
let me tell explain to you. these karate masters expecialy Yahara have trained their entire lives, they have mastered techniques that can kill people. i bet that if yahara hit someone hard enough he can kill them, or make their death come sooner. the reason they are sparring like that is because if they went full out, there would be someone who dies or gets injured, and now adays its not yahara and the old sensei that made that decision its the scared type of karate fighters.
karate1922 3 years ago 2
This comment has received too many negative votes show
No, they haven't mastered techniques that can kill people.
PaulGappyNorris 3 years ago
i do the same kind of sparring and its definitely not air tag we go all out there's been broken feet cheek bones anything on the head you name it so far i've gotten a couple bloody noses broken my shin and still won and have been knocked completely out so you should really get your facts together before you make such a bold statement by the way both these guys would destroy you and anyone you've ever met im sure of it
