To this day you can still see the remnants of some of the watch towers along where the border once was, ruins of bridges that were blown up when the country was split after the war, and the people who still live there explained to us that there were mine fields behind the area that once had huge barbwire fences. This visit was quite an experience, to say the least.
The border to west Germany had to be well defended - two superpowers were facing off each other with only meters distance between both sides during the cold war.
Those NVA-helmets may look funny but are worlwide the best protecting helmets made of metal. Efficiency needs not to look good. Form follows function.

You forget that the DDR was not so popular in the DDR. Why were the masses calling for freedom and the overthrow of the Communism government. Maybe the Soviets did not drag the rest of the Warsaw pact countries into Afghanistan, but it forced Hungary (1956) and Czechoslovakia (1968) to stay in Warsaw pact by force! NATO has a choice!
And to the other responder, he would have lasted a lot longer than that. The NVA was well trained. I have a friend who manned a OPFOR T-55 and a lot of times they whooped on the other guys asses. In one instance his single T-55 knocked out a whole platoon of M60's and bottled everything up.
