I'm from England, here the drinking age is 18 and the driving age is 17. I don't understand why the drinking age is so high and the driving age so low in America. Why are fifteen year olds allowed to drive? it seems far too young to me. Dunno, it's probs juts me.

Since I was a teen, the kids who drank did it to prove they were "grown up." The rebellious, pissed-off ones drank. But their were also some pissed-off kids who rebelled in other ways, like shaving their heads, piercing their belly-buttons, wearing middrift-bearing shirts to show off their pierced belly buttons, dying their hear purple, etc.

It's more about the stage in life they're in. 18-21 are still undergrads. 21-24 are graduates or working (More responsible). Also, average age range of friends is 2yrs younger and 2yrs older. At the limit right now 21, they are still hanging out with 18-20yr olds. This is definitely why we don't want to lower it to 18. Then 15-17yr olds will be around alcohol.

Even cars driven by sober people are dangerous. The real problem is our infrastructure. And 18 years olds are adults and should be allowed to make their own decisions. It's only a few years till 21 and then people try to make up for it. i totally agree with the legal age being lowered to 18. howvwer, as i look around my high school and see all of the minors smoking cigarettes, I understand why the age is not lowered. For 18+, it isnt "cool" to smoke cigarettes because it isnt tabboo. However, if you can get your hands on cigarettes when you are 15, that is considered cool.

I would have to disagree with you. At my school, the idea of smoking cigarettes is a disgusting proposition. I know maybe 3 smokers at my high school (undoubtedly there are more), but the vast majority do not, most likely because it's just considered smelly, carcinogenic, and expensive.
We also have very few instances of drunk driving due to a reliable and free DD system in place across the county for teens who are stranded or under the influence. Encourage DD and fatalities would decrease

consider this.. who are the ones supporting the drinking age of 21? 1st point: they said that the department of defense supported the drinking age of 21. BUT, survey soldiers from age 18-25 (majority of the military) probably more than 80% say it should be lowered. 2nd point: the government obviously doesnt want to lower the age limit, but again survey Americans and probably more than 50% would agree to it being lowered. As a college student who actually drinks responsibly, I can say from experience the 21 law is worthless bullshit. I've seen a girl nearly die at a party after drinking a bottle of wine and 151 proof rum in one night. A prior similar experience got her expelled. As far as I knew, she grew up in a fairly sheltered environment, and the shock of college life really took a toll on her. The mystique around alcohol for young adults is wreaking havoc, and the 21 law is merely exacerbating it.

Since I was a teen, the kids who drank did it to prove they were "grown up." The rebellious, pissed-off ones drank. But their were also some pissed-off kids who rebelled in other ways, like shaving their heads, piercing their belly-buttons, wearing middrift-bearing shirts to show off their pierced belly buttons, dying their hear purple, etc.

Raise the drinking age to 25. This way less college students will be capable of acquiring it and the hundred of thousands of college students negatively effected by it will decrease significantly. It's more about the stage in life they're in. 18-21 are still undergrads. 21-24 are graduates or working (More responsible). Also, average age range of friends is 2yrs younger and 2yrs older. At the limit right now 21, they are still hanging out with 18-20yr olds. This is definitely why we don't want to lower it to 18. Then 15-17yr olds will be around alcohol.

Even cars driven by sober people are dangerous. The real problem is our infrastructure. And 18 years olds are adults and should be allowed to make their own decisions. It's only a few years till 21 and then people try to make up for it. Other anti alcohol measures locally around the country have shortened legal drinking times in establishments, driving even more alcohol consumption underground. This has had an influence in the under-reported surge in cocaine use in 21st century youth culture

His argument that they law is only relevant if it is actually being followed is a poor one. One could say stealing should be legal because there are people that do not follow that law. It is interesting that they are called "Choose Responsibility" when the Frontal Lobe of the human brain which can affect that very ability is not yet fully developed until after 20 more near mid 20's. i totally agree with the legal age being lowered to 18. howvwer, as i look around my high school and see all of the minors smoking cigarettes, I understand why the age is not lowered. For 18+, it isnt "cool" to smoke cigarettes because it isnt tabboo. However, if you can get your hands on cigarettes when you are 15, that is considered cool.
If you had the drinking age lowered, the amount of high school alcohol-related fatalities would increase.

I would have to disagree with you. At my school, the idea of smoking cigarettes is a disgusting proposition. I know maybe 3 smokers at my high school (undoubtedly there are more), but the vast majority do not, most likely because it's just considered smelly, carcinogenic, and expensive.

I think that everyone under 21 in the military should go on strike, and everyone under 21 who is considering enlisting should not. Why should they put their lives on the line to protect people who want to use them for war, yet deny them their rights?

There is a difference between an 18 year old and a 21 year old. The brain needs these few month to develop and also continues to develop even when and after a person is 21 therefore drinking at 21 also damages part of the brain that is not fully developed so raising the drinking age is a good idea. You who say "if i can fight in the army, why cant i drink?" obviously don't know anything about what alcohol does to your body. Do some REAL research and then decided what the age should be.

Do you know what serving in combat can do to your body? A person has a right to damage themselves as they see fit. People exercise that right every time they have a cigarette, a beer, eat unhealthy foods, or do/use/eat any other pleasurable yet destructive substance. Furthermore, anyone who has made the decision to reap pleasure from bodily destruction at the age of 18 is coherent and stubborn enough, to maintain this opinion until they are 21.

I for one, as well as 99% of people I know are more than responsible enough to handle it, just because we choose to drink, does not make us any different from a 21 year old who also chooses to drink, and it should be OUR CHOICE. amen to that. i used these statistics like this to shut the instructor up in my mip class(for when u get a mip). He said so if u were a legistlator and a madd rep came up and said u could save 120 lives a year by making mip laws more enforced i said why dont u make fast food illegal as well cuz thats killing thousands upon thousands a year,
Oh yah take a real look on those statistics madd quotes they also dont talk about how those deaths just transferred to the 21-24 age group for driving,

dont get me started on marijuana laws, i know much more about that, and the majority of Americans think it should be decriminalized, but instead of doing that, they just push more LIES to mainstream media getting people to "realize" how dangerous it is. some of the LIES i've seen on t.v. piss me off so bad. I totally disgree with lowering the drinking age. Just because someone is old enough to vote does not make them responsible enough to drink and to be smart about it. What does voting or being in the army have to do with allowing young kids to get plastered!?? We have too many crazy kids now out on the road...that is all we need for those kids to be driving around drunk. I know that some kids already do that illegally but we don't need to encourage them. It think the whole thing is crazy.

consider this.. who are the ones supporting the drinking age of 21? 1st point: they said that the department of defense supported the drinking age of 21. BUT, survey soldiers from age 18-25 (majority of the military) probably more than 80% say it should be lowered. 2nd point: the government obviously doesnt want to lower the age limit, but again survey Americans and probably more than 50% would agree to it being lowered. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A DEMOCRACY. WHAT THE FUCK

As a college student who actually drinks responsibly, I can say from experience the 21 law is worthless bullshit. I've seen a girl nearly die at a party after drinking a bottle of wine and 151 proof rum in one night. A prior similar experience got her expelled. As far as I knew, she grew up in a fairly sheltered environment, and the shock of college life really took a toll on her. The mystique around alcohol for young adults is wreaking havoc, and the 21 law is merely exacerbating it.

The funny part about the argument that MADD idiot made that 13 year olds are now drinking is that (1) the average earliest age of drinking was actually HIGHER when the drinking age was 18 and (2) he's also counting people who were given wine by their parents in places where it is legal to do so.

That's not an argument, it's a maxim. And if you take a look at how much teens drink, it clearly doesn't work. Many college campuses don't enforce because it's too impossible to enforce.

We need to lower the drinking age. For years teens have essentially been told that alcohol is this highly destructive substance that will kill them if they have one sip before they turn 21.
We need to abandon this under 21 fiasco. We should start teaching teens about alcohol. By teach I don't mean the scaremongering they get from D.A.R.E. Teach them how to enjoy it responsibly.
Other nations have been doing that for years and they have lower alcohol related fatalities than we do.
