  • Tried learning this on viola . . . .1) There's a reason Bach wrote them as CELLO suites (they don't sound as good on viola :\) and 2) I can't ever hope to be compared to this guy -_-

I still love this song <3

  • After listening to Rostropovitch, feeding my Bach obsession...

I might start a cult.About the cello suites.

  • If i could be granted one dying wish (for when i'm eventually lying on my death bed), my wish would be for Rostropovich to come back to life and play me this Bach Cello Suite so that i might die in peace.

This is simply beautiful, and my favorite Bach Cello Suite piece. <3

  • @Rockrgrl4 Me too!!!!!!

  • @Logistica11735 just because someone isnt swearing about bitches n hoes doesnt mean this is gay.

  • notorious BIG

  • @azNandySoccer What has this sloppy asshole to do here?

  • @MrRip1997 Praise the hip hop king. Chill your nips LOL

  • @azNandySoccer You're not funny, in fact you insult this old man and his dog

  • @MrRip1997 how the hell does me mentioning another person's music i enjoy listening to insult rostropovich? rostro is my fav cellist, i like a wide range of music including rap. bite me.

  • @MrRip1997 you idiot don't insult other types of music just because you don't like it.

  • @azNandySoccer I've come to realize how THIS and computerized sounds differ, along with the voice of someone surrounded in his video clips by hoes. Got it? Why did you have to mention him? We all criticize whatever differs from our opinion, either correctly or stupidly, depending on the subject. Your lame comment was enough for me to see that you still don't find the difference between computers and musicians, but I hope this is my idea. Too bad

  • The best cello player ever with my favorite Bach suite piece! Touched my heart in the deep...

  • <3

  • WOOHOO FOR SEX PARTY CLASSICAL MUSIC

  • This is music, the pop things are shit!

  • Misto is indeed a musical genius whose soul and performances brings us closer to the Great Composer who inspired this music and this performer. This recording of the Suites for Unaccompanied Cello (by Rostropovich) is my ultimate favorite, after studying Pablo Casals' spare genius through to the dramatics of Yo-Yo Ma. This is the ONE!

  • No problem...^_^

  • This literally gives me goosebumps when listening

  • Rostropovich IS Bach... cause Bach is actually immortal, he's just living under assumed names as peoples grandfathers for all this time.

  • I love it, wonder if it is Rostropovich or Bach... or maybe it's both of them. Two Greats!

  • is he playing this on his davidoff stratovari?

  • @the1stpianoplayer No, Davidoff Stradivarius is Yo Yo Ma's cello...

Rostropovich's cello is the Duport Stradivarius.

  • @RelinquishedJulius Oh I thought that the davidoff stratovarius it used to belong to rosproviches, but now it is yo yo ma's

  • @the1stpianoplayer Okay, I believe you need some researching...

The Davidoff used to be Jacqueline Du Pre's cello...

And, ever since she died, Yo Yo Ma is the one using it...

And Rostropovich's cello, which he owned since his birth, is the Duport Stradivarius...

  • @RelinquishedJulius Yes, I do need some researching...Either way, thanks.

  • It inspires me to know that even he had to pick up the instrument for the first time. I've only been playing for a decade. I look forward to playing and improving for the rest of my life.

  • who the hell disliked this? seriously? obvs no taste in classical music or something.

  • @k73f I actually do not care for Rostropovich's cello suites. they feel more like an 80s guitar solo than the beautiful works i know they are. this prelude is a wondrous exception though

  • @k73f emo people that listen to screamo

  • @tyinykiller5 I listen to screamo and like this

  • I just love Rostropovich plays the cello!!

  • Hey guys, go to the uploader's page.

    Just do it.

  • omg this peice hurts O.o rostropovich is an insane musical genius !!!

  • Bows

  • I listen only tortelier's interpretation and i don't think that prelude is that fast.

BTW. I have very bad english and i sorry for this.

  • what movie is this in?

  • They should release this jewel to Blu-ray

  • I just had a cramp and an eargasm!

  • @eldiagrama omg so true so far I can't play this without getting a cramp on either hand

  • Prelude - BWV 1010 in Eb Major...Tough fingerings on cello!

    Great performance...

  • @majav15mg hahahahah

  • Dick Cheney a great American? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh man, that's a good one.

  • @drizztman101

    richards a dickhead

  • @alwaysright10000

I believe it would be speak English instead of talk English.

  • It's sad when young people never heard him live because, like Starker and others, his sound was vastly superior live to what it is in recordings.

  • No, it's just a cello, without the expletive.

  • Texas fiddle hahahaa

  • Great Slava!!!!!

  • My musical intuition is telling me that everything he's doing is wrong, but... strangely, I'm not bored at all.

  • No, I think that the Russians had a certain style and then played most music in that style, and that style had little to do with traditional German style of playing.

  • They do it big in russia, like in texas, with their big fiddles and all.

  • The U.S.S.R. doesn't exist. Russia is still there. But, you may want to check a map to be sure.

  • Hey dude look on a map....

  • @alwaysright10000

    lolwut?

  • @alwaysright10000

    lol I troll u

  • @alwaysright10000

Communism actually didn't fail. What made the USSR collapse were Gorbachev's *capitalist* reforms.

And anyway, Rostropovich HATED Communism. The only reason the KGB didn't kill him or something was that he was a good musician.

  • ay, qué weba me das, como sea le entendiste no?¿ pendejo

  • no inventes...

  • @alwaysright10000

Spell "Sergeant" right. Bloody deluded Americans.

  • @alwaysright10000 funny guy!! LOL @ you

  • What the f*ck?

  • Are you... kidding...? I'm almost incapable of grasping how you could have no clue what a cello is... I mean... if it were a "Texas fiddle" I'm rather certain that Bach wouldn't have written anything for it, much less an entire suite, seeing as he died somewhat before the US declared independence from Britain.

  • Someone didn't look at the Texas fiddler's username...

  • haha great comment xD

  • It's called a cello, dipshit...

And it's not really a giant violin. The size and some proportions are bigger. If you sized up a violin to the right size, you'd have to add an endpin, a taller bridge, tune the strings differently and a ton of other stuff for it to even be somewhat like a cello.

And plus, that's Mstislav Rostropovich, probably the best cellist to walk this Earth. He does not play any kind of "Texas fiddle," as you call it. He plays a cello.

  • Great comments Sir. No doubt, you are right and I'm laughing to death , cause some people think that the instrument being played is just an XXL violin!!! Ha! ha! ha!. Really funny. Thanks for the Comments. Bravo.

  • So, alwaysright1000, you are wrong. And arrogant.

  • Actually, 'ignorant' can be used as a noun.

Check the Oxford English Dictionary, Bucko!

  • This is my favorite of the "youtube" versions. He honors the harmonic progression , and there is a feel of improvisation, as opposed to interpretation in the middle.

  • @kcaj48 Or, maybe, you are just near sighted--or older than he is.

  • Simplesmente magnifico!

  • What a master. What a piece.

  • Those first striking notes define the word AWEsome!

  • So amazing, i often forget to breath when listening these pieces.

  • Yes. Quite possibly the greatest pieces of solo work ever written. I often start the cycle before bed every night - the Yo-Yo Ma recordings. I need to acquire Rostropovich's soon, for they are such stunning renditions, such confidence.

  • The music is beautiful. Does anyone know who filmed this production? It's visually stunning.

  • Baroque is an expressive playing, and while playing the notes by the "sheet" i guess you could say, its more enjoyable for the audience and the soloist to play it with whatever emotion that surfaces within you.

Look and listen to modern soloists performances, listen to Goulds enjoyment while he humms to playing his 1981 recording of The Goldberg Variations.

  • I hope to be still playing this well when I'm his age!

    Bravo!

  • I enjoy Maiskys romantic interpretation better.

  • So what.

    They are different interpretations.

The fact of using the word *romantic* in relation to Bach is questionable.

  • bach is indeniably baroque, but their (rostropovich and maisky) interpretation is rather romantic in style. Usually the baroque interpretation is lighter.

  • Please define what you mean by lighter in style.

    The Rostropovich is certainly danceable.

By this I mean the suite (i.e. to the next) of dance movements is danceable while listening to Rostropovich and moving through the dance forms.

  • YES Limbo...Im kiddin. I can just imagine someone doin da limbo to this. EW.

  • lighter = not Brahms lol

  • absolutely. Anner Bylsma(dont know if thats spelt right) is in my opinion the definiative performer of the suites. Baroque in its purest form

  • Definitely. Incredible tone.

  • I love this!

I would love to hear the low notes a bit slower...

    very passionate piece! Bravo!

  • Do I only think that or is the second note to high? (two times; it is the same figure)

  • The second time he hits that low note, hes a bit flat, so maybe thats why the second note sounds too high to you.

  • For all of you who are critiquing this beautiful piece,

    Rostropovich was brilliant.

You may like it one way, but he likes it the way he plays it. So please shut up.

Critiquing a master cellist who played for 80 some odd years just makes you look stupid.

  • I couldn't agree more! While I would never play Bach in this style, you have to respect the interpretation of such a profound master. Also, when one spends an entire life time playing huge works like Dvorak Concerto for thousands of people, it is hard not to let it influence you approach to Bach.

  • but the point is those influence are always good, no one would want to resist any inspiring influence to be a better musician.

  • I think thats totally wrong. Although nobody will ever be as good as he again, it is our responsibility as the public and his privilege as the performer for us to critique it. Thats what we're here for!

  • hey, cellolover94, you couldn't have expressed it better!!!

  • haha thanks!

  • If this wasn't a closed set, all those seats would be filled...

  • Performers often choose to play baroque pieces at a fairly constant tempo, for a "historically accurate" performance. The prelude to the 4th suite generally isn't much slower than that anyway.

  • With the bows back then, the bows couldn't make them "sing", they had to play in short notes to sustain a loud sound.

  • Any great musician can make any note sing.

  • Same with any great orchestra. If you don't understand what I mean, listen to the CSO's interpretation of Barber's Adagio for Strings.

  • I luv how he plays. Now I want to change from a violia to a cello. But im already in advance so I will wait

  • He has bear claws as hands!

    Brilliant cellist!

  • I think slower tempo it wiil be better.

but performance almost perfect on my opinion.

  • masterful. nuff said.

  • Both of them died holy jesus. But the cello suites are still here. Humans dies but what they did never dies.

  • The best cellist playing the best piece ever written for cello, by the greatest composer that ever lived.

  • The prelude here is one of favourite pieces. Thanks!

  • Rostropovich is not best represented here. His prime was the sixties. But I almost start to cry watching him play here. It had to have only been a few years ago. Amazing... This is what all cellists should look to...

  • I think this is from 1991.

  • omg now I feel bad, when I was watching the video all I could think about are the imperfections I make in this suite as opposed to him .....and then how old he is and yet so good. What did he die of?

  • I think it was some sort of intestinal cancer. Try Wikipedia. Every cellist revered him as the supreme one. He is osrely missed

  • wait I feel retarted asking this question but is this guy really dead

  • he passed away in April this year

  • imagine the acoustics of the place hes playing in.

  • Hail the victorious dead!

  • i concur

  • oh my god awesome, the best Rostropovich!!!!!
