  • he sounds like Kermit the frog

  • I thought Kate's part was great. It really did grow boring, but hopefully if I see it again, I'll be able to muster up some artistic meaning or something like that. For some reason, it just seems like they're just taking well-known Bob Dylan moments and then just reenacting it out but it just seems twisted and empty but I feel I'm just basing that off of a couple scenes that annoyed me.

  • Thanks for making this and for posting this.

Try and listen to "Blood on the Tracks" and "Oh Mercy."

  • Anyone who refers to I'm Not There as a biopic is coming into the movie with complete misconceptions.

  • How could you not listen to Blood on the tracks????

  • The first time i watched i didnt understand a thing of what was going on. Then i watchd it 33 times and now im in love with it. Cate blanchett really did a great job.

  • 33 ??? SERIOUSLY?? Or was it 3 times, and you made atypo? ;)

  • Can someone please tell me who the hell this guy. If it's just some old guy giving his worthless two cents on this movie then he should just shutup. I mean the guy was listening to the Plain White T's on his way home. What a douche.

  • If you don't want to hear his "worthless two cents" then don't watch his video. But some of us enjoy hearing other people's opinions on films, music, etc.

  • I like the film

  • This is not too different from a lot of us. We all experience the world differently at different stages of our lives. Very few of us can claim we're the same person we were years ago. He was just a musical/poetic conduit of ideas which collectively reflect our own.

If you let go of the fact this is a movie about Dylan and go with the idea that it's a view of life from within his mind (similar to the way a lot of us might view the world if we walked in his shoes) you might enjoy it a lot more.

  • I find that whether someone enjoys "I'm not there" depends on their preconceptions of not only Dylan, but what to expect from a movie portraying him.

calling this movie a 'biopic' is highly misleading as it isn't so much his biography... but a journey through his psyche; and just like his songs, while written to reflect the world around him, were fundamentally a reflection of his experience with his surroundings from the many points of views he attained by 'being' different people. • I'm a big Dylan fan and i pretty much agree with your views on the movie. It sounds great on paper but doesn't deliver. I got bored with it long before the end, although I also liked "Woody Guthrie" in the movie, not just the Jude Quinn character. I don't agree with your statement about the 3 albums, but I get why you'd think that and don't get why people would be pissed at that statement. Anyways, good review.

  • All this depends on what you're expectations are before you enter the movie theatre. I have 'followed' Bob Dylan beyond the 'electric trilogy' and I think the movie was interesting. I'd agree with you that some of the scenes were cringe inducing, but others were of sublime beauty, rather like listening to Wiggle Wiggle & then being hit with Visions of Johanna.

  • is that "piano man" playing from 1:50 to 2:06?

  • I guess this is a late reply "blueterrior" ;) The song you hear is "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan (big suprise ;) ..."Piano Man" is by Billy Joel :) That songs great to!

  • I liked it.

  • I think youre right. Its a self-concious concept movie that didnt go very far with its concept.

  • great review, but i think the movie was really great and gives a very good perspective of dylan, whoever he is ;)

  • Thanks for your video :)

  • you shouldn't have said "only 3 real albums"

Opens too many cans of worms. ha ha ha.

John Westly Harding? Blood on the Tracks?

Shame on you! But that's ok. ;0)

Two riders are still approaching. The wind still beginning to howl!

  • haha, yeah. Along with the ones mentioned by both of you, i would say the following albums are also great and deserve a mention. "Another side of Bob Dylan", "Times they are a changin", "Freewheelin" and "Desire" and the rest of his albums IMO do not come close to the ones named.

I do find this review of the film to be quite accurate. although i found the film to be a good watch it was'nt as good as i expected it to be, or what i feel it could have been.

  • The answer my friend is blowing in the wind.

  • You seem like a nice guy, by the way, and I enjoyed your "travelogue"-style critique.

  • thanks for your postive comment DeanLeonard1. and thanks too for the spelling correction...i can use all the help i can get.

  • The word you're looking for is not "palatable" but "palpable" in your sentence referring to the tedium in the audience.

  • I think you made a very honest review, the only reason this film was made that i can see, is the ego massage for dylanites like myself as they recognise direct lifts from previous dylan writings or footage. it will make a lot of money and probably get a few people into bob dylan, but there are already far more interesting films, books and music in particular, that tell Bob's story in a way that isn't prescribed by anyone. Not even the man himself.

  • Fuckin idiot duchebag you didnt get it. You are a square. I don't think Dylan would want you to listen to his music. You're video was worthless.

  • the film did an excellent job at portraying the different stages and personas that dylan went through in his career, this is why the fact that

haynes uses 6 different actors to play the man himself is so effective. Blanchett is amazing and the likness is uncanny, even the mannerisms. As for the 3 dylan albums worth owning statement.... clearly ridicuous, the man is still making great music.... Love and theft = genius

  • I love the film, and while I don't completely agree with this man, I am thankful that we have YouTube as a place where opinions can be shown. I think his line about the only 3 good Dylan records is fine. He could have stated it better perhaps. Hey, I have my 3 fave Neil Young, Jemes Taylor, Bob Marley, etc. no crime having favorite records.

  • What is this guy talking about? I completely disagree with everything he had to say. Bob Dylan only had "three albums" that are worth owning? This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The movie is great. IT's an abstract interpretation of Dylan's life told through character portraits and it's right on.

  • when Dylan speaks to reporters and interviewers in Don't Look Back, I often agree with what he is saying and even think that at times he exibits a tremendous amount of care towards them. In this new film they used Dylan's words but changed the reporter's, making them seem smarter and nicer than they actually were. It made Dylan seem like a jerk.

  • i saw that movie because i am going to school for filmmaking.. and i know little about dylan. i was intrigued by some of the imagery. but mostly i felt it was lacking. i thought charoltte gainsburg was amazing and i sympathized with her character. i left feeling that dylan was schizo and stole from other people... that he wasn't ever really all 'there'.

  • get off the internet. you're a wart on society's ass.

  • dear 1duck1duck2goose,

i take it you are a charles bukowski fan?

  • Nice one. Personally, I thought the film was good. Not great, but not bad. I think that more could've been done with it, but it definitely proved a point: that one life can't be told from one perspective.

I agree that it's not equal to the hype, but I didn't dislike it. Good review, though.

  • Nothing like having LA all to yourself. I did see the movie it was okay. Some what confusing during the "Billy The Kid" segements. But I liked it because the movie was a challege and I like movies that are like that way.

  • I have to agree with you on many of the points you make regarding this film. It looked great on paper, I'm cool with mixing myth with reality, Cate Blanchett is brilliant, but the film just didn't gel for me either. Agree that someone with no knowledge of Dylan might enjoy it better, but won't know much more about him afterwards.

  • Thanks for watching our video! We loved yours too. It was filmed very nicely, and your thoughts on the film were articulated very well, even though you don't think they were. I used to go to Arclight every week when I lived in LA, so it was really nice to see that theatre. Really enjoyed your review! Your ideas of the "myth" of Bob Dylan are dead on.

  • Being a writer/singer/songwriter myself, I can see why he was so difficult. He was an introvert, and its hard to explain yourself and why you do or say or write things. Poets can be quite eccentric, and are most of the time, introvert type people.

  • Great review! Honest, concise, knowledgeable.....you had it covered. It also didn't hurt that we share many of the same feelings. I thought there were some beautiful scenes and great acting, but all in all a lack of entertainment. As you mentioned, a plot could have helped! Thanks for the comment and I'm looking forward to watching more of your reviews.

How about that LA traffic? If only everyday was Thanksgiving!

  • Hey Blairtoo ...it reminded me of Fellini ...

the surrealistic scenes and the metaphors to me would lose someone ...especially the trickster period of BD.....you have a great week ..I'm subscribe to your blog ...I like honest no bs view of Bs things ...the theatre in nyc was packed ...one was sold out of 6:30pm and 7pm shows........lol

  • thanks for your reply and subcription.

  • I'll look at some of your other reviews! HM, motion picture worker since 1981

  • You remind me of a middle-school math teacher.

  • yeah. occasionally i remind myself of a middle-school math teacher. thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • thanx for the honesty of your review ..I plan to go to nyc tomorrow and check it out ....I know his history and the myths ....I need a giggle

  • thanks for your comment, RavenMadd9. i hope you will post your take on the film. i would be interested to know how you feel about it.

  • Add a fourth CD: Blood on the Tracks. And maybe Infidels. And... okay, just stick with those three.

The movie, as you describe it, reminds me of Dylan's own film, Renaldo and Clara.
