  • My house get flooded whenever there is heavy rain continously. I contacted an expert he gave me an estimate for $5000: This is what he wrote:

    1. removal of shrubs, plant material and regrade of soil . 2. Laying of fabric and mulch once regrade is done Site Work: Removal of old bricks and weeds around tree, laying of fabric and mulch that matches house.

As its a lot of money please give me your expert advise how I can do myself.

    Many thanks in advance

    Jan Mirza

  • @SoccerVideopro Jan, you bet. As you can imagine, this is pretty frustrating for me. For the life of me I can't figure out why people just don't go to my Askthebuilder website and get the answers there for free. You can have all you need to know in minutes by going there and typing: Drainage into my search engine. You'll see the Drainage category. Click it. Read EVERY column in that category. Let me know how that works for you. You need one of my Linear French Drains.

  • i just had a question to ask of you according to your expertise.i just bought a brand new home 10 months ago and the hardwood floor is sinking down in some areas, spreading apart about the width of the side of a quarter between alot of planks and some areas near my stairs have dips, and also i will be walking and clip the tip of my shoe hitting some areas thait it is lifting can you please tell me if this is wrong or is it natural settling? thank you for your time

  • @KINGABYSS111 Go to my AsktheBuilder website and read every column I have there about Hardwood Floors. You'll find them in my Flooring category.

  • Any way to contact you with out it costing something? Been trying to reach you from twitter at the NAHB Convention to emails to this and seems every response requires money to talk.

  • @LiquidSiding I was all tied up with appointments at the Builders Show. Sorry!

You can submit a question at my site using the Ask Tim page.

  • Would be great to see a feature on installing a false ceiling. I need to insulate a flat roofed extension and feel adding a new ceiling with 4 inches of 'Kingspan' should do the trick.

  • hey tim,

i have 2 identical rooms and i want to knock the wall down between them. the wall is about 9ft long and the door to each bedroom is on either side of the wall, so its not a thick wall (about 6in between each door). there is no plumbing or electrical issues to my knowledge. the house was built in 2004.

can you tell me a rough estimate based on the information i have given you?

    thank you very much!

  • @screwstoneboy93 $1,589.49

  • Hey Tim Your video started about when I was halfway down your page and it was out of view. I wasn't expecting it and it disturbed my coworkers and I couldn't find the source of the audio as I'd already scrolled past. You already have an askthebuilder video on the right with the words 'sound off' but of course that wasn't the video playing. I will never visit your site again at work. Just a heads up - playing audio without request is frankly really amateurish and unnecessary.

  • @ZKad Sorry about that. Your comment cracks me up. Are you telling me that you were GOOFING OFF? What would your boss or manager say if she/he knew you were surfing the web instead of WORKING?

In other words, it's okay to surf assuming that the sound is off on all videos. Is that what you're saying? What about everyone who surfs correctly at home on their own time?

  • There is a simple solution to that guys problem. Since you never know if a website will have audio as part of it he just needs to keep his volume turned down very low unless he wants to listen to something. Then when he is done listening get in the habit of turning it back down. Problem solved and no need to yell at someone else about their website.

  • "... the owner is not interested in the fact that you have overhead costs to cover and apparently does not want you to make a living from your occupation".

    ???

Hey! In this economy the homeowner is trying to save money too! That's why I'd rather do as much as I can myself and not get screwed by a contractor that I have to call back or repair something he did wrong the first time.

  • Great information after looking a round your videos.

  • Hey Tim,

  • That glare or whatever that thing bouncing up and down on his right shoulder is so distracting! haha

I saw your "How to make a video" on another website. At first I thought it was going to be a really bad video, but I found it really hilarious. It was funny and had good advices.... can't believe I actually watched all 10 minutes of it, even though I already knew all that stuff... it was just funny to watch.

  • @boamuro Thanks! Way down in the comments I explain why I made that video. It was made for a private conference where I had to give a talk on How to Make a Video. So I thought, heck, just MAKE the video showing how to do it. The attendees are all friends of mine, so I thought I would be a goofball to get them laughing. That video is at least 4 years old, possibly 5. I think we shot it in September of 2005.

  • Here's an arbitrary question.

I seem to have lost water pressure in my shower. I live in an apartment complex. This might be my mind playing with me... but ever since the pressure went way... my neighbors shower seems to have gotten louder. Is it possible for me to lose pressure when someone installs a new shower head next to me??

  • Yes. I have columns about low water pressure in shower heads at my AsktheBuilder website. I tell you there exactly what the problem is and how to fix it.

  • Tim, In all of my 62 years, it seems that if I pay any amount "Up Front" to a laborer, especially drywall finishers, that I don't see them again for a few days even the sober ones. One appears different, but, it has been 3 days since ernest payment *chuckle*

Can humid weather such as a fog or rain limit the ability to tape & float a well insulated, new home?(outside I understand and he did not use an excuse). He WILL be back no doubt, just wondering whethet weather conditions can interfere.

  • @Firep0w3r Never pay for work up front. There are plenty of reputable people who will finish the job before asking for a dime. I have been in the construction industry for 30 years and have never asked for money up front.

  • @ArtisanTony That's good Tony, but there are times you should ask for money up front. If a project you work on requires material that's special order, why should you put your money up with the possibility of the customer backing out of the deal? Never use your money to get these items. At the very least, have the customer buy it and you show up to install it once delivered.

  • @AsktheBuilder You are missing out on profit when you let an owner purchase equipment or material for you to install. Our contract specifically states that we purchase all material and equipment for the project. If an owner wants to purchase these items we will usually turn down the job, This is the first indicator the owner is not interested in the fact that you have overhead costs to cover and apparently does not want you to make a living from your occupation.

  • @ArtisanTony Tony, no you don't! You add that profit and overhead onto your bid. You simply communicate that you'll have to service the item and you're missing out on the profit. Most understand that. The point is that you're taking a huge risk if you buy NON-RETURNABLE material with your money. If you want to buy it, then simply get that exact amount up front before you place the order. Obviously you've never been burned here. Wait till that day happens to you. You'll remember this post.

  • @AsktheBuilder That is what contracts are for! And the only time I have been burned is when I did not have one. Once! :) I think every company has to operate inside their comfort zone and their experience. I like for all expenses to go through us. I keep pretty accurate history on costs for future projects. It is easier to get a better reading on SF costs when all costs are included in your budget.

  • does having a window open or closed affect how much dust is in my apartment? which is which

  • Yes. Dust from outdoors readily flows indoors.

  • Thanks, what about having fans on or off? does that put more dust on furniture?

  • good

  • awesome reviews!

  • welcome back Tim,

long time no see.. i hope you keep up the great videos you have been posting ...

    Regards,

  • Thanks. The big problem right now is that it's not paying to do them. The ad revenue you get is so small you can't hardly justify spending all the time to make them. And believe me, it takes time.....

  • with the quality of videos you've been making, am sure they do take alot of time.

I just like to thank you for all those you made. they sure have been very helpful to know how to fix things around the house. I am already a tool guy, a handy man or a DIY guy, whichever u like to call me. Your videos helped me gain more info related to home maintenance.. to which i would like to thank you again and again for sharing your knowledge with us..

i hope your newsletter gives be more rewarding..

  • So, hows that lake doing now Tim, you been fishing on it yet? I was watching people fish on the bay here today but didn't go on, been having a warm spell all week. I don't trust the ice yet...

  • About ten days ago I was on it just before a snow came. It was 4 inches of black ice - the strongest - at my shoreline. That's plenty strong for a man. Bob houses are out everywhere. We got tons of rain two days ago that turned the snow to water. It's refrozen, so I'm going to drill it today. I estimate with the overnight temps well below 32 F, that I'll get at least 6 inches.

  • Yay!!!! I signed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • awesome! i sub to you a long time back.

  • Can you send me the free top 5 tips. I am already a subscriber but never received this. Thanks
