The most natural of pianists. The music just seemed to pour out of him in a pure and unaffected way. Funny that he thought of himself as a mediocre technician, when in fact he had a fabulous technique.
There is no right direccion, trust me. Besides, Music isn't about beauty and scales, every piece can show you an inmense and diferent prespective. Ear. What you feel? Angry? solitude? sadness? or happiness? or maybe perfection or a controlled mess? Is the human essence glowing through your ears and your soul.
Rubinstein can never play rubbish. And by the way i think he is best suited for Brahms. something not most people notice bu he has that grandeur and sadness and freshness ( Bavarian Forests) that NO ONE cna capture in Brahms. Listen to his Brahms intermezzi and see just how stupendously deep and beautiful they are. And this liszt ? listen to the crispness of the notes. the clarity and seriousness
It's very easy to underestimate Rubinstein because his performances always sound so simple, natural and right. You think, "Oh, there's nothing special here, he's just playing it the way it's supposed to be played."
But then you listen to other pianists playing the same piece and you realize, Uh-oh, maybe that's not such an easy thing to do...
@ivelosthewilltolive Yeah. And why is it supposed to be special from the original composition? Rbinstein is the best, because he doesn't ruin the piece like Lang Lang would just to show off. That music-hater.
rubinstein is just incapable of playing in a non-musical manner, yet never at the sacrfifice of the bravura these pieces demand. so many pianists just plow through them never taking even a moment to "stop and smell the roses" so to speak. and technically it is magnificent. perfect clarity but still with that golden sound.
@brianCIM Even at that, my recollection is that he took some time off in the 1930's when he was nearly 50 for some technical "guidance." And he came out better than ever. But I heard him in concert more than once much later, and if he missed it, it was just tossed off into the waste basket. So what? Ask him about technical perfection. His response: "That's not making music!"
@grabit1 God, i am green with envy. My father, whose parents were on the board of the Cleveland Orchestra, saw many amazing pianists in the 60's. At the time he was in college and didn't particularly care for Classical music. THE ONE concert that made an unforgettable impression on him was hearing Rubinstein. Even at the time he knew he was hearing and seeing something special.
Kissin is not better than Rubinstein. They are just DIFFERENTS. Two greats pianists. Just listen to Perahia for this rhapsody too, you could be very very surprised....

Does it make me childish if my absolute favorite part is the shift at 3:05? :D
I'm kind of new to classical music but I'd love to learn and hear more. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

@relaischat i completely agree, Brahms, not Chopin, was his favorite composer.
brianCIM 1 year ago
@relaischat SO TRUE. BTW, Brahms was his favorite composer, not Chopin, which people assume. His Brahms is out of this world.
brianCIM 1 month ago
he's great, but his playing is better suited for Chopin etc... Liszt sounds better with more definition, this sounds muddled and boring.
flarbton 1 year ago
@flarbton i think thats partly due to the recording, the piano, and your own distorted opinion. this sounds boring? you coudnlt be more wrong.

@flarbton there is something wrong with your sound system? Boring? I respect not your op.
