I can not believe some of what I am reading here. In John's version it was about him and Yoko, a good bye message to Paul and (the dream is over, yesterday ...being Paul.) the Beatles fans. Secondly, believe in yourself - simply put. Brian May's version is basically the same in his own words. He "related" with what John said. Keep on playin those mind games people. Sheesh.
A beautiful song in its original incarnation, but to a Queen fan, this version just means so much more and touches so much deeper. I never fail to cry at his rendition.

@SigandGibbs - oh, I agree. I love Queen, and Hendrix, and AC/DC. There are loads of people who've done a lot for the genre.
I'm also predominantly a McCartney man. Whenever I list my favourite Beatles songs, I end up listing 5 McCartney songs (or 4 + Harrison) and have to throw in a Lennon one to balance it out.
you are pitiful especially when you criticize an icon and a myth asswhipe,go and learn what the rock and roll history IS,before comparing May with who had revolutionned the music, tard, moron, idiot.
I think this is a rare example of a perfect song. I think I give this song more respect than I give many many many others, and I believe in a top 10 list this would be on there. Brian does it great justice, and the original itself if beautiful. I think it's a song every should take in as there own, much like Brian did.
his voice is sometimes crap but here he makes u cry... he and john L. would make a splendid singning couple pity john's dead.... peace be with u johnny somewhere not in heaven but you're certanly somewhere!! love u both
I was at this show! I'm pretty sure it was at The Palace in New Haven, CT. That's why Brian is wearing a Yale shirt. This was a great show in a small venue. Brian did Love Of My Life too and did a great job with it. It was the 1st time I heard him sing it. I think this is from 1993. He did a lot of QUEEN songs and used a lot of great into's & outro's. I met Brian a night later in Rhode Island and he recalled in great detail playing in my hometown of Waterbury, CT back in 74. Thanks for post!
I was at the concert in New Haven that night and the following night in Providence as well. Two nights I'll never forget... I took sent him a few of my photos I had taken in Providence and it took a year but I did get a response from him. Unique shots and I guess he liked them. I wish more people had attended both concerts. Fan club screwed him over big time!! They didn't tell club members the itinerary until the tour was over and done.
This version of May capture the essence of Lennonn's writing. We all "don't believe" in diferent things. The problem of mankind is that we're all waiting for someone else to solve the problems... and forgeting that we need to start with ourselfs to make some change.
You can't even hear what he's saying cause you got all these fucking idiots going..............woooooa....woooaaaa.....where the fuck was this recorded.........in Alabama?LOL.
Wow, everyone takes this so seriously...I don't think that John Lennon would have a problem whatsoever about Brian doing this, (he did a great job). And about people being offended by the lyrics change: it would have been more ridiculous if he had've kept them the same, (and probably offended more people). Brian did a great job, and I'm glad he covered this song.

This is an insult to the original sentiments of the song. Does Brian May think he improves the song by changing the lyrics? or is does he think the original lyrics are too offensive to good taste. God I hate Queen and Brian May and especially this insipid bastardation of a important song.
You have misunderstood the point. Brian May changed the lyrics to symbolize what he felt at the time. And it hurts so much to hear the words. My heart sink everytime.
"I don't believe in being Queen anymore..."
It's just so incredibly sad, given what had happened with Freddie's passing.
I'm glad Brian and Roger are back out on the road to bring Queen's music to those who never got a chance last time around.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well I am not a fan of Queen and I think that it is reasonable to assume that John Lennom would not approve of this version. He could of changed the lyrics to espouse the virtues of beetroot and tangerines but it would not make a blind bit of difference.
Besides the song is about emotional attachment to perverse man made abstractions and not the momentary thoughts of a broken down rockstar. The song glorifies a way of life and not capricious whinging.
You don't have to like Brian May, you don't have to like Queen. You don't even have to say WHY, but it would be appreciated. You should just respect them because what they did is outstanding.
The song is about beeing spiritual (not only religious) also about resignation: unattach yourself from the things that once made you happy, but won't last forever (like beattles). His happiness was not tied up to his success, he was happy to leave all that behind and live a normal life for 5 year with his son&wife (see watching the wheels). At least this is what I understand from this great song, together with LOVE and IMAGINE, the best of John. A huge man... living in a small world.
Sorry ,although I'm a big fan of Queen and May,also of Beatles, but its silly for Brain to do that.
even if he wanted to say that Queen is over by death of Freddie ,how can he say "I don't believe in Queen"?
John Said "I don't believe in Beatles" after Beatles breakup in 1970, he was having disagreements with other members and wanted to move on with his life with Yoko.he was sending message to the world ,Paul,George, his fans that the dream is over by his decision.
I think Lennon was referring to something much bigger than the breakup of the Beatles in his line "I don't believe in Beatles". He was telling people to stop worshiping others - gods or musicians or whomever. He wanted the listener to turn inward. God is you. I am god.
... and "the dream is over" is not so shallow as to refer to Lennon's dream of being in a band called the Beatles being over. He's talking about how whatever it is one takes great stock in, is pointless. These "dreams" die and in the end all we have are ourselves. The world is an illusion and most people spend their lives totally absorbed and lost in this "ride". It's not real. Find your true self from within, not from the artificial outside influences like religion, sex, careers and cars
but looking back and searching at that time..there was alot happening...John always wanted to be the one to announce the breakup and he was pissed when Paul made that..
so it is both aims he made in the song.
anyway my point is still May should not compare it to Queen, specially he made his best in years to come to continue with the "dream" ,even brought Paul Rogers ...
whatever any queen fan opinion of that, May did not believe that "Queen dream is over!!"
I remember Brian playing this on tour in 1993 and thinking to myself that it was a statement song. He seemed to be saying, "Queen fans, sorry, but Queen is finished. I'm moving on."
Of course, he completely changed course on that sentiment by touring and making an album under the name Queen + Paul Rodgers.
Keep dreaming, Brian, because Queen REALLY IS OVER!
May didn't sing this for religious reasons, that's why he cut out all the references to God and called it 'The Dream Is Over'. It's just about how the dream of Queen is over after Freddie died. So quit the religious chatter here, it's besides the point.
It would've been better had he included the -actual- words to the damn song: GOD IS A CONCEPT, by which we can measure, Our pain... I don't believe in magic, I don't believe in I-ching, I don't believe in the bible, I don't believe in tarot, I DON'T BELIEVE IN HITLER,
I don't believe in Jesus,I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me. And that's reality.
Some find it hard to accept the credit or the blame. I think John was trying to explain there IS a beginning and an end to everything; and its better to accept that than give credit or place blame.
coming from a chritian perspective i must say that people dont understand what john lennon was implying. from what i understand was that he meant that the beatles are now more likable than the church as it was/still is corrupt. and to be fair he is right. we need to take a note from islam. there should be no establishment standing in the way of god. people should be confident in faith enough to live without out it. the church has corrupted the bible and the religion so much. they should dissolve
After they (the churches) pay for their crimes against humanity; they should pay taxes and back taxes for having led the populace down the road of deceit and denial. Most churches do little to nothing FOR the community, and thats what they should be for. Either they practice what they preach or they PAY TAXES!
That is true of only TWO dinominations in the UK at least! As a Baptist, i can tell you that my church has never recieved a penny from central government, since it was formed in 1660, because we are considered "Radicals to the state", even three and a half centuries on, the Anglican church and the Catholics however, are VERY differant. Religion Kills BUT Faith SAVES
Do religions, churches pay the same tax as everyone else? If they dont, like here in the USA, then they do get money from the government. If you actually live by your faith and not just proclaim it, I have no quarrel with you. In America it is the people who are 'without' faith that are the radicals and religion and the religious are forgiven every transgression. In America the religious are the main opponent to universal healthcare. IIt makes them hypocrites, even to their own 'God'.
this is an excellent cover, john lennon was the greatest ever living musician, ther are arguments for Cohen, Dylan, Zappa, and many more but lennon was the ali of music, would u agree???
This sounds great to me. I love the fact that people of intelligence (Brian May did a physics degree at university) have finally got the balls to say to the world that the fantasy of jesus, mohammed, moses and all the other primitives is unacceptable to 'big boys' . We know better and we won't take the BS anymore.
Well people of intelligence had the balls to say it before, the only problem was they were executed by the Catholic church as heretics ;). Now people won't stand for that, and people are throwing off the chains of religion at last!

@drowser598

For reasons best known to herself, Yoko wouldn't let Brian include this on his "Live At Brixton" Video. Make of that what you will

This version of May capture the essence of Lennonn's writing. We all "don't believe" in diferent things. The problem of mankind is that we're all waiting for someone else to solve the problems... and forgeting that we need to start with ourselfs to make some change.

God I hate Queen and Brian May and especially this insipid bastardation of a important song.
uhtblackadder 2 years ago
You have misunderstood the point. Brian May changed the lyrics to symbolize what he felt at the time. And it hurts so much to hear the words. My heart sink everytime.
"I don't believe in being Queen anymore..."
It's just so incredibly sad, given what had happened with Freddie's passing.
I'm glad Brian and Roger are back out on the road to bring Queen's music to those who never got a chance last time around.
Freddie's spirit lives on.

The song glorifies a way of life and not capricious whinging.
uhtblackadder 2 years ago
You don't have to like Brian May, you don't have to like Queen. You don't even have to say WHY, but it would be appreciated. You should just respect them because what they did is outstanding.

I can't imagine ever wanting to cover it though because the words are so specific to John Lennon!
Good job Brian, all the same!

God by the GOD Lennon
amazing lyrics !!
amazing greatest songwriter ever!!
poussyledzep 2 years ago 2
The song is about beeing spiritual (not only religious) also about resignation: unattach yourself from the things that once made you happy, but won't last forever (like beattles). His happiness was not tied up to his success, he was happy to leave all that behind and live a normal life for 5 year with his son&wife (see watching the wheels). At least this is what I understand from this great song, together with LOVE and IMAGINE, the best of John. A huge man... living in a small world.

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.... And good Lord, what an amazing vocal by Bri!!!
I'm so happy that he managed to get through all the sad things and dissapointments and that Queen is still alive!

In never wanted Queen to be over but just like John Deacon it is the dream is over of one of the greatest rock bands. Good bye Mr. Bad Guy!
Ricky91993 2 years ago 3
Sorry ,although I'm a big fan of Queen and May,also of Beatles, but its silly for Brain to do that.
even if he wanted to say that Queen is over by death of Freddie ,how can he say "I don't believe in Queen"?
John Said "I don't believe in Beatles" after Beatles breakup in 1970, he was having disagreements with other members and wanted to move on with his life with Yoko.he was sending message to the world ,Paul,George, his fans that the dream is over by his decision.
Funny of Brian to do that!
ammar255 2 years ago
I think Lennon was referring to something much bigger than the breakup of the Beatles in his line "I don't believe in Beatles". He was telling people to stop worshiping others - gods or musicians or whomever. He wanted the listener to turn inward. God is you. I am god.
kristofferdub 2 years ago 6
... and "the dream is over" is not so shallow as to refer to Lennon's dream of being in a band called the Beatles being over. He's talking about how whatever it is one takes great stock in, is pointless. These "dreams" die and in the end all we have are ourselves. The world is an illusion and most people spend their lives totally absorbed and lost in this "ride". It's not real. Find your true self from within, not from the artificial outside influences like religion, sex, careers and cars
kristofferdub 2 years ago
You have a good point in that...
but looking back and searching at that time..there was alot happening...John always wanted to be the one to announce the breakup and he was pissed when Paul made that..
so it is both aims he made in the song.
anyway my point is still May should not compare it to Queen, specially he made his best in years to come to continue with the "dream" ,even brought Paul Rogers ...
whatever any queen fan opinion of that, May did not believe that "Queen dream is over!!"
ammar255 2 years ago
I remember Brian playing this on tour in 1993 and thinking to myself that it was a statement song. He seemed to be saying, "Queen fans, sorry, but Queen is finished. I'm moving on."
Of course, he completely changed course on that sentiment by touring and making an album under the name Queen + Paul Rodgers.
Keep dreaming, Brian, because Queen REALLY IS OVER!
duhg 2 years ago
@duhg totally agree
etolpygo 1 year ago
May didn't sing this for religious reasons, that's why he cut out all the references to God and called it 'The Dream Is Over'. It's just about how the dream of Queen is over after Freddie died. So quit the religious chatter here, it's besides the point.
jbdazen 3 years ago 4
I don't John Lennon was saying anything religious either. People take things to literally sometime.

What's so horrible about the original lyrics?
Death2Bigots 3 years ago 3
Some of the best lyrics in history.
Some find it hard to accept the credit or the blame. I think John was trying to explain there IS a beginning and an end to everything; and its better to accept that than give credit or place blame.

coming from a chritian perspective i must say that people dont understand what john lennon was implying. from what i understand was that he meant that the beatles are now more likable than the church as it was/still is corrupt. and to be fair he is right. we need to take a note from islam. there should be no establishment standing in the way of god. people should be confident in faith enough to live without out it. the church has corrupted the bible and the religion so much. they should dissolve
kahuna390 3 years ago 2
After they (the churches) pay for their crimes against humanity; they should pay taxes and back taxes for having led the populace down the road of deceit and denial. Most churches do little to nothing FOR the community, and thats what they should be for. Either they practice what they preach or they PAY TAXES!
warrenproject1 2 years ago
That is true of only TWO dinominations in the UK at least! As a Baptist, i can tell you that my church has never recieved a penny from central government, since it was formed in 1660, because we are considered "Radicals to the state", even three and a half centuries on, the Anglican church and the Catholics however, are VERY differant. Religion Kills BUT Faith SAVES
Demis121 2 years ago
Do religions, churches pay the same tax as everyone else? If they dont, like here in the USA, then they do get money from the government. If you actually live by your faith and not just proclaim it, I have no quarrel with you. In America it is the people who are 'without' faith that are the radicals and religion and the religious are forgiven every transgression. In America the religious are the main opponent to universal healthcare. IIt makes them hypocrites, even to their own 'God'.

PeelTower 3 years ago 11
Well people of intelligence had the balls to say it before, the only problem was they were executed by the Catholic church as heretics ;). Now people won't stand for that, and people are throwing off the chains of religion at last!

your over rating our intelligence...seriously, we havent even gotten on mars and we think we own the universe...lol
