  • stereotype

  • Advertisements target everyone's insecurities, no matter what gender.

  • all ads have ever done is piss me off, they take up valuable space and money that would be better spent on more enriching content. the fucking corporations and the white male christians that control them as well as most of the world are to blame, the people need to rise up and realize the bullshit they have been put through, but hey are all too fucking stupid to because of all the television they watch.

  • Global ‘democratic’ governments MUST act for th people, NOT corporations & affiliate industries. Regulation, standards & other measures of decency & quality have been discarded, in strangely convoluted ways. Whilst these companies enjoy much freedom, ours is in fact diminishing. We often have no effective right to redress when these companies and policies degrade our collective future. They reduce costs yet we pay more, for less. Labelling on products, advertising etc; NONE 'self approved'

  • so is Jean a victim of all this evil man dominance... or is she another exception to the rule?

  • All you men who feel attacked by women who do not want be objects prove the point that you do not want women to be strong. dont complain that women want to change the way we are treated. help your mothers and daughters and sisters get to a point where we are not objects and toys. How can you look at someone you love and say to them you deserve no more.

  • She makes a good argument, but she does need to talk about how the ads hurt men too. She touched on it a little bit, but she needs to do more.

  • How can anyone with a straight face say that advertisers don't target men's insecurities about their penis size and/or performance in bed? The speaker fails to address the huge advertisement industry related to sexual enhancement drugs, i.e. Viagra, Cialis, etc.. Polemic feminist bullshit.

  • @abandonshape

How is that feminist bullshit? Yes, advertising does target men, for example, there was a Brut add that basically said men who weren't stereotypically 'masculine' enough needed to be slapped. I discovered that ad because a FEMINIST blog I follow was disgusted by its repression of and violence against men. But women are still exploited more especially with regard to beauty products, and not including your gender in a discussion about WOMEN does not invalidate her argument.

  • YEAH BECAUSE MEN NEVER HAVE TO COMPETE WITH UNREASONABLY UNREACHABLE PARADIGMS LIKE HARRISON FORD OR MATT DAMON OR THE GARY STU CHARACTERS THEY PLAY THAT CONTINUALLY REINFORCE THAT ALL MEN WANT IS A WOMAN WE HAVE NO DREAMS WE HAVE NO WANTS OTHER THAN TO NAIL A CHICK WE'RE SLOUCHING ANIMALS WHO ARE ENTIRELY SLAVED TO OUR PENIS OUR ENTIRE LIFE IS BUILT AROUND FINDING ANOTHER MATE YES INDEED WOMEN IT IS IN REALITY ALL ABOUT YOU

    tl;dr stop having periods

  • @TheGeneralCritic

You think feminists aren't upset by the fact that men are constantly portrayed as horny bastards always after a piece of meat? Or how girls are told to avoid getting raped by doing particular things, like not wearing a 'sexy' outfit, because men 'can't control themselves?' I'm a feminist and I'm very upset by these things, but you guys need to stop thinking that male problems are required to be put on a video about women. It's not always about you.

  • looks like the meaning of the evian ad went over her head. typical woman.

  • Ads only project successfully what is received successfully. Men don't live in a world where there bodies are judged? If we work out we're perceived as juicers but if we're out of shape we catch her checkin out the guy with the biceps. I think men and women live in the same world of bodily judgement.

  • Sorry to "spam" you (does this count as spamming?) but I am trying to get the word out about my petition against Bic's Soleil ladies razor advertisements.

For the first time ever, I am standing up against the way woman are portrayed in marketing, and I need your help. Please check out my petition, and sign if you feel the same way.

    Thanks for your time

  • Can't we just have a nice, good debate? instead of all this useless and senseless arguing and name-calling over the internet of all places? I mean seriously, that's just childish. Express your opinions, but you don't have to do it in this kind of way. Whatever happened to manners?

  • @xoxoKMAxoxo It died with the internet. Because people can hide behind their computer screens they no longer feel obligated to have any manners or decency. With the internet everyone can carry the same length stick simply because what are you gonna do. Its the same reason why people hide behind texting on their phones. Its easier to be mean and cruel in a very indirect way than it is to say it to someones face. Thats why manners died.

  • @waunke56 yea i know and they're trying to call other people idiots lol

  • @xoxoKMAxoxo They usually call people idiots because their opinion is obviously right and those other dumber'er people are not smart enough to understand that. Thats why the resort to name calling and temper tantrums in online chats.

  • @waunke56 i know, i was saying they're gonna call other people idiots when they're being the idiots calling them that...but i'm kind of being a hypocrite now lol

  • @xoxoKMAxoxo LOL i was honestly just trying to do my best to imitate the typical goings on of the people who do the pointless bickering and shouting. Kinda hard to be sarcastic on a message board though. Kinda lack about 95% of the usualy human comunication.

  • the majority of the comments here make me sick. every time i think that maybe feminism is making progress and more people are accepting it, i just need to read comments to videos like this, and realize that people are still sexist close minded assholes. and feminism isnt about female dominance, its about gender equality. how is it that so many people still dont understand that?

  • i agree that the ideal of the perfect woman needs to stop. my twin brother is 6ft tall and muscular, and im only 5FT 4IN and 153lbs and i can always beat him in a fight. why? because hes a calm person and hates to fight even when he needs to.

  • Personally, if you disagree with something yet you still endorse in the product, then you are the one who is dumb enough to support it. Don't pull the feminist card and then buy makeup with this sh** on it, otherwise you're just a hypocrite.

  • -_-;....Bullsh**, active boys and passive girls? What about Britney spears, Queen Latifa, Opera, etc. and the ads they put out? To make it sound like men are the perpetrators of this just pisses me off. Any moron can put out any ad, but they put them out because someone on the other end is buying them. Women are passive? Well, if women are the ones buying the product then THEY are the ones who view themselves as such, NOT the men. Feminism is bullshit, equalism is equal. Stop pushing your biases

  • I'm a guy and all i can say is "this woman needs psichistric help" - i have never even THOUGHT of "hey she smells nice, let's rape her"

    what the FUCK !?

As for all of you thinking these clips are "omg the meaning of life" and you must fight it.....you have lost your mind. Get away from the computer, and get to smell the flowers. Seriously...

  • this is all correct. I agree. But if you think only media is causing the harm, dont forget that the girls who Decided to go into modelling dress up as animals LOVED what they did. And they still do. For one thing, its true media imposes unrealistic perfection but on the other, the ideals always change over time. Its a unstoppable part of human nature. Its upto you to DEAL with it, opposing it is not dealing with it, its rejecting the reality.

  • the only thing that fails here is that this concentrates on the side of the coin that affect women but also there are deeper issues such as race and certain traits as height facial features hair texture body frame u have all these types of things that not only affect woman but also man . i think the only way to end this superficial injustice is to overthrow the capitalistic system

  • Just two things I'd like to say. 1. In ads appealing to men, women may be sexualized, but that is simply because men are generally attracted to women. To read more into this is ridiculous.

    2. In ads that appeal to women, here it is their own gender imposing "body image" on them, often times in ways that aren't even generally appealing to men. For example, the "anorexic chic." Bony girls don't generally appeal to men but, instead, a healthy looking one.

  • Excellent clip. There is not nearly enough exposure for these particular issues.

  • There is too much butthurt in here.

  • Fail troll is fail

  • Comment removed

  • i agree completely, nothing in this country is a problem untill it starts effecting women, women do things to men everyday that if the situation had been reversed, the man would be demonized for it.

  • I saw this movie twice in college, and they make a really good argument here. I would recommend this movie to everyone I know. They will never look at ads the same way again! I know I didn't!

  • It can be said with absolute certainty that feminists must rely on censorship to impose their will upon others. What is happening in this video is women making their own personal choices to act as models and Kilborne essentially shaming them so that she may further her own career on the appeal that women are helpless victims. I think well-reasoned person could make this claim but of course the intolerant feminists will always "thumb-down" a comment until it is censored.

  • Well, in any movement, I guess there can be said to be good and bad in each one, and there are schisms. I consider myself to be a feminist, and I'm a guy. But I'm what you could call a sex positive feminist. While it is true that some feminists may just hate men or think of all women as victims, there is a good side to it, too, that leans more towards egalitarian values, which is where I stand, personally.

  • @BishounenNerd Woudln't you then be an egalitarian, not a feminist? Here's my problem with feminism.. I think all people are born unequal with different abilties but feminism forces people to be equal despite natural variation of ability which requires the inequality of law and due process to implement. In the context of feminism equality only applies when it is of the benefit of women. So their advocacy of equality applies to only that of women which is a paradox in and of itself.

  • @professorfoxtrot I don't believe that all people are born unequal. And even if it is true that they were, we are capable of improving ourselves. The problem is that society puts women in an inferior place to men. One very well-known case in point is that a woman makes (I think) 80 cents for every dollar a man makes for the same amount and type of work. The way I see it, women are being oppressed, so the point of feminism is to advance womens' social stratification to be equal to mens',

  • @BishounenNerd The argument that women get paid less for the exact same amount of work is a bunk. Business are interested in making money, If business knew that they could pay women less money for the same amount of work it would be a goldmine, everyone would be hiring women to increase gains and the demand for women would be increased thus increasing their wages. What feminists are fighting for is the replacement of nominal value with artificial inflation.

  • @ "professor"foxtrot - They are already! This statement shows your perhaps lack of understanding or education on the issue(s). Employers already ARE hiring women to do cheaper work - women comprise 70% of our p/t labor force in the U.S., & about 80% of the factory line globally, plus women are making out "better" supposedly in this economy, because they are not getting laid off as frequently from their cheaper-paying jobs, whereas men in higher paying industries are.

  • @montesireland 70% of our labor force and 80% of line work? Citations please!

  • @foxtrot Hmm...Ok....That's common knowledge (like sky is blue, earth is round...) But here's a real radical feminist source: U.S. Labor Department. haha! :)

A book that does a great job at detailing these issues globally is Firth Murray's 'Outrage to Courage.' Provides many first hand accounts of these issues also, like interviews w/ employers who hire 3rd World women who have 'small hands,' are 'loyal' & are 'cheap.' (P.S. It's odd... you make MANY claims to truth but offer no citations.)

  • @montesireland no link?

  • @professorfoxtrot What I am citing are self-evidenced truths, but you can't just throw out statistics and claim that the Labor Department made these claims. It borderlines libel.

  • @professorfoxtrot The claim you make that 70% of jobs are held by women is absolute bullshit.

  • @professorfoxtrot To continue my point, there are 3 types of societies, patriarchal, matriarchal, and egalitarian. In a patriarchal society, men dominate women. In a matriarchal society, which is rare, women dominate over men. In an egalitarian society, men and women share an equal amount of power. The way I see it, feminism works towards changing our society from a patriarchal society to an egalitarian society by working to eliminate man-made social inequalities that are placed on women.

  • @BishounenNerd Creating an equal society requires oppression because any two groups of people divided by race, gender or even hair colour will have inequities because humans vary naturally as a species. So the drive for an egalitarian society is cruel because it deprives people of their abilities to put them on the same plane as all those with handicaps.

  • @professorfoxtrot, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the models! You are completely missing the point! What matters is the message that is being perpetrated by using only emaciated women as the standard of beauty. Kilbourne is not "shaming" these models! The models aren't the ones deciding how they are to pose, or how their bodies are going to be used to promote an ideal of beauty and behavior that is unrealistic.

  • Well actually these models do decide how they pose they have every right not to be in these advertisements and to pose as they do so I'm not going to swallow the pill that these women are helpless victims. I think behind feminism is contempt and jealousy for the extrodinary which explains a proclivity of anti-capitalism and anti-idealism. If you wanted a realistic protrayal of the average woman you would have a 60-second cutaway of a coachpotato eating chips. How interesting.

  • Women are not helpless victims, but we live in a society that systematically promotes values that often lead to aggression against women.

Also, you claim that people are born unequal with different abilities. Certainly that is true, but are you saying that women are inherently unequal to men? Since women have gained (mostly) equal opportunities to men, have we not shown ourselves to be equally able to perform the same tasks?

  • @BishounenNerd The premise of this video is flawed and is based on a victim-identity that the market place is there to conspire against women. It isn't. Ads reflect and appeal to the desires of people. Women themselves are attracted to strong male characteristics and yes the majority of them see appeal in these characteristics. All it takes is a fat neurotic girl to watch these ads and become green with jealousy to interpret it as an affront to women.

  • @professorfoxtrot No. You are wrong. Ads may not exist to victimize women, but they do exist to sell products, or create the conditions that enable a certain product to be sold. That is, ads either tell people how to meet a demand, or create a demand for people to meet. In fact, ads victimize a vast majority of their target audience, because it's easier to sell something to someone with an emotional need than a purely rational need.

And girl don't get jealous, they get traumatized.

  • @Thracy11 How can you possibly blame a commercial for creating something that people desire? It's called self-responsibility. It would be like blaming rape on women because dressed provocatively and creating a need or suing mcdonald's because you were dumb enough to base your diet around their food. People make choices, it's entirely the responsibility of people to make the right ones.

  • @professorfoxtrot, because thats what were tougt from the bignning.. ifwe diddnt see those things we woldnt disire those things... you dont see the reward you dont do the work

  • How old are you ?

  • Your "humor" is already infantile

Would you even UNDERSTAND what she is saying ?

  • Of course, genetic engineering shouldn't just be used for making people more beautiful, but also stronger, smarter, and healthier. Instead of trying to drag everyone down in the name of 'acceptance', we should try to lift everyone up, help them realize their full potential. Equality is all fine & dandy, but it must be the equality of *perfection*, not mediocrity. This is the essence of T R A N S H U M A N I S M. Look it up on google (for example "transhumanist faq").

  • I agree about the idealization of female passivity; this is retarded and needs to stop. Strong, assertive women are much more interesting (and productive) than weak, fearful & passive ones. However, beauty *is* important. It's not the only thing that counts, but it *is* something we should appreciate and strive for. Not just with crude means like make up, diets, and plastic surgery, but with GENETIC ENGINEERING. As the saying goes, true beauty comes from within -- from the genes.

  • @Parapon3ra I don't think women adopting the qualities of men is not attractive at all and looks much better on paper. I think it would be best if stop claiming that these women are oppressed and left the models to do their own careers as they please. I think feminists telling them what to do and claiming to have a claim on their lives and actions is perhaps the most truly dehumanizing aspect of this video.

  • What a dumb comment

  • @oklapi If you have something to say address my specific comments, don't just throw out one-liners of unsubstantiated claims- put up or shut up.

  • Fuck off

  • thejudgedandweakened, you are absolutely right

  • wow, this and other videos are very revealing, to the point where i wouldn't be surprised if youtube removes this because of the points this present against their sponsers

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome ^^ good job getting it out there :P

  • Feminists, lol

  • Very moving and informative. It's brought to my attention points that I have never consciously been aware of.

  • Perfeito!

  • We are all commodities to each other, blame it on the human ego.

  • amen

  • For everyone that says men don't even read/watch advertisements, thats Bull shit. Advertisements are everywhere, even when you dont realize it, you can be looking directly at an ad. It's the same for everyone, we all see ads no matter what, and subconsciously absorb the message they give.

And just to let you know, I'm a man. oh and IggyHazard, I think your going a little too far..but yes the media desperately needs to change its point of view of women.

but then again this is all my opinion

  • Everyone needs to get the book version. It's much more extensive. Or at least watch the full 30min clip.

  • I'd be lying if I said I didn't desire vengeance upon subhuman degenerate savages. Those who have only the law of social darwinism written on their hearts, not the Law of Love. Those who commit violence against women as a matter of principle. They are as unto the Philistine. If I had the power, I would strike them down with such hatred that the earth would tremble.

  • "I'm mad as hell! And I'm not going to take it anymore!"

How do we kill the media? Not with violence. The media, like society itself, is a fictitious entity, not a living being. To kill the media, we must do so with an idea. We must also kill society with this idea. And this idea that is the cure for the ills of society and the media (which are ills in themselves) is spirituality, family values, nationalism, and moral vigilantism.

  • Best response is to boycott

  • That's a form of civil vigilance. Not sure how effective it would be, but it would at least make some impact. Still wouldn't satisfy my desire for retribution against the Hun.

  • LOL YOU PARINOID

  • LOL YOU ILLITERATE

  • Brilliant stuff.

  • this post is ridiculous. check your facts.

  • sexist i believe the word was : )

  • Your comments are so easily dismantled. They don't stand up to scrutiny at all. Intoxicated I can believe. Highly educated? Hmm. If you say so!

  • reading too many magazines? maybe stick to novels, they educate and enrich your linguistics much better - women purhase the products in the 'flawless' adverts to be such as that, men generally do not read adverts and only a small minority are labelled as "metro sexual' whereby they care more about their skin/hair/nails/penis composition appeal than other aspects of their life.Women(if you want to be seen as a collective)should stop buying those products if they want that advertising to dissipate

  • Men don't read ads? Then why do they associate the vehicles so much with their masculinity? Phallic extensions much?

  • out of all the men you know? do even 1/3rd or 1/4er of them associate themselves as masculine with respect to their automobile they drive? or purchase items that have any reference to their phallic extension

  • I have something to say....... WHERE ARE THE PARENTS!?

  • this brings my piss to a boil

  • i agree with most aspects but she's taking it a little extreme with sweeping generalizations.

  • At 4:38, boy on bike, girl with daisies -- this is not true to say that he is active and she is passive. He is shown extroverted and she is introverted. Maybe this is the conditioning that makes sure that men don't think they have feelings or an interior life. Perhaps the boy is shown conquering nature and the girl is shown interrelating to nature. She is contemplating; the boy is shouting. Who's to say that she's wrong for contemplating flowers? If a man is shown doing that, he's gay.

  • I disagree with your reasoning.

Media is clearly saying that. "this is right"

    "Men do not "contemplate flowers"

    and

    "Women do not shout"

You have said that, "if a Man is contemplating flowers, he is gay"

this is how the media has trained you to think. "If you are a man contemplating flowers, you are gay."

    but what type of Flowers?

is it OK for a man to contemplate a rose, Would he be considered Romantic?

Media has trained you to think so.

  • ihateneveen:who told u that what u are choosing is really ur own decision s n is not influences by others (media) that tried to control u so u decide what they really want so ur not choosing because u want it.u are controled by media. And this is not life that give u the good n the bad is the media whos choosing for you what to see is the media that is choosing what is gonna be ur reality of life. Media isnt life and doesnt have the right to choose my morals values or whatever.

  • We watched this in class today for my domestic violence crisis intervention class. Very well done. Very interesting. Very sad.

  • listen life gives you the good, life gives you the bad, instead of treating people like they are mallleable and cannot think for themselves, let them choose thier influences... i know there are bad role models out there and there are also good ones. Its up to you to decide whom you look up to

  • You are absolutely right but what happens when these good and bad influences enter the picture before you get the mental maturity to decide what is good and what is bad? Conpanies are advertising to younger and younger children and parents cannot monitor their kids every moment. Every seemingly harmless kids show has advertising and a parent will not deconstruct for a five year old every subtle sexist thing about a toy ad.

  • What's her name?

  • Jean Killbourne

  • where are parts 1 and 2?

  • It is true.I agree

  • She raises some very good issues andits all food for thought. We should talk about it and not roll our eyes to this type of questioning, whether you agree with it or not. Too often people are worried about being "prudish" and "uncool". You cant make a comment about a poster with a model without being called jealous. Im sick of that intolerance. Not all of us admire these models just cos theyre models. There are some empowering images out there, you just really got to look for them and thats sad

  • Wow... advertisers need to be held accountable for this stuff!

  • This video is amazing

  • all hail david ebitz

  • I believe that the photographers taking these pictures just try to take artistic pictures and somewhat try to find the art in the job despite the companies trying to exploit women. But i feel what the speaker is saying because its not whats intended its how its precieve and maybe she see's this as subliminal sexual harrasment. But that just my opinion.

  • I think her point is that art reflects what society portrays as masculine and feminine. These advertisements reflect the inequalities between the two genders and then reinforces it. I don't think the purpose of her documentary is to expose subliminal sexual messages. The entire film is great. I recommend it. I watched it for a feminist Philosophy class and she really does a great job of covering feminist issues.

  • i love this video

  • Me too.

  • This video is in no way racist, its informative to advertising, there was only one picture and one word, theres way too much rubbish surrounding racism. It shouldn't scare people either, its the truth. its fact, its whats in our face evryday, so why be afraid when someone talks about it--- because everyones ignorant!

  • i agree we can't avoid subjects like these today.

  • Subliminal messages. The Anti-Christ. Romans 10:9-11.

  • what?

  • i agree :)

  • Its true... but hearing it put so bluntly is horrifying. Thank you for this video; I am going to try to be a more aware consumer because of it.

  • this movie has honestly has inspired me in so many ways

  • i was in a burger king last night and i heard a voice in my head telling me about "the great tastes on the value menu". fucked up

  • its great someones bringing attention to this. although advertizing is more a reflection of a cultural aesthetic more than a cause for the propagation of ideas. but it still has that effect. and its very subversive.
