I saw Jackie Wilson live in a small club (Leo's Casino) in about 1965. I sat 5 feet away from him, and he was on a stage that was only about 6 inches off the ground. At one point, he got the women so excited, they jumped up on the little platform and started undressing him -his coat, his tie, etc. Jackie was laughing and everyone was having a great time. Jackie looked straight at me and gave me a smile and a wink as though he was saying, "Don't you Wish You Were Me?", A great entertainer.
Personally i like this better than the tony bennet version. Dont get me wrong but this one is way more romantic and meanful, Bennets' was something to go cruising with lol
Elvis certainly went from rags to riches, could be his song. What an amazing talent Elvis had which did bring him his riches, but he never forgot his roots and the back breaking work his mother did picking cotton whilst having to pull Elvis around with her in a sack, and certainly living in an area called 'Shake Rag' Elvis knew poverty. certainly makes you sit up and think
I am love Elvis and love northern soul music and of course the great Jackie Wilson. Absolutely brilliant, Loved this as I love Elvis's version too. Elvis and Jackie had great respect for each other and Elvis help pay towards Jackie's hospital bills when his money ran out after his fateful illness
You'll notice that Jackie's arrangements are what I call 'tempoed-down' to allow him to highlight his big voice style when he records a big hit done by someone else. This Tony Bennett monster, like Danny Boy, was no exception. Too much life in the fast lane and a devastating coronary took The Black Elvis out the hard, slow way and at his peak. Never ever spoke again after becoming an eight year incommunicative vegetable at only age 41. RIP Jackie. We who loved you then still love you now.
@doctorhugo ...No disrespect but while Elvis could sing, he never had the range that Jackie Wilson had and so I don't think we need to disrespect Jackie by calling him the "Black" Elvis. Since Elvis culled his music and moves from Blacks across the South, should we call him the "White" Jackie Wilson? Each of these men had a tremendous talent. Had Jackie Wilson gone in another direction, he could have been a fantastic opera singer. Elvis could never have been, he didn't have the range.
Tony Bennett did a great job on this one, but Jackie made you cry. The man had a gift no other singer could duplicate. If one could today he would be the next greatest popular singer that ever lived in 2010. There will never be another Jackie Wilson or Elvis Presley...
Elvis Presley recorded this song later i think in the early 60's, did fantastic of course. this is one great early version of this song, the guys did awesome. sounds like a hammond draw bar B-3 organ in the background.
