  • I loved this movie. Just awesome. And the 'Prawns' were fantastic- especially loved them.

  • I loved this movie, it really did feel like a real documentary at the beginning, and i though that was one of the things that made it awesome

  • Sorry. everyone. but this is one of the worst movies I ever seen, it terms of major movies. It's ugly and depressing. I can't relate to the Aliens and the main character. It looks like it should of been a comedy when it first started. Star Trek is a million times better than this. Also Twilight is better than this. Peter Jackson is a over rated hack. This director should never make movies again, atleast American movies.

  • Why does noone like Cloverfield?... I thought it was awesome...

  • Some really intellectually diminished people I know (adults mind you) actually thought the movie was real.....which just blows me away, but i suppose it's a testament to how well crafted it is.

  • My sister likes Cloverfield. Is district 9 real?

  • @princessaijae01 I really hope you don't mean with the aliens. But, yes it does reflect on past and present social issues in South Africa. The word District 9 is a reference to District 6 in Cape Town. District 6 was a predominantly Coloured (similar to mulatto people in America) area, that lay very close to the suburb of Vredehoek, an upper-middle class area on the foothills of Table Mountain. The coloured people were removed to the Cape Flats area of Cape Town. It also refrences xenophobia

  • @bazilZAR Yes i do mean with the aliens. +( And everything that happened there

  • You guys said it all. I was not expecting how dark, unsettling and sad the film was which makes the film a sci=fi masterpiece.

  • Poeple how is it explained in the movie why aliens dont use their weapons and trade them for cat food this still confuses me...

  • They're mere pawns. They aren't leaders they don't have anyone to lead them they said this in the beginning of the movie. They're drones so they don't go all viva la revolution on the humans because they lack a leader. I like to think that Christopher was a leader - he was the only one who took some initiative.

  • @sancoandpanco because the prawns never wanted to harm us ever, they are a peaceful race who need to make weapons because another alien race is probably at war with them

  • @afireinsidebrad @sancoandpanco umm... no. Somewhere during the first 20 minutes of the movie a blond/brunette haired lady being interviewed explains that they(the prawns) have a society based on a hive system (similar to bee's or ants), and she continues to say that sometime before they opened the ship's door something happened to the "leaders"

  • Bearly wait District 10!

  • @Mesina2 is it really coming out? because ofcourse this needs a sequal but sometimes they cancel them just like they did with the halo movie

  • My favorite film of 2009 by far.

It's funny you mentioned the eyes. I thought the exact same thing.

  • I get out of work in 5 min ,, going to go rent it on blu ray !,, never saw it, and I love sci fi...

  • i just bought this on my ipod its downloading now is it good?

  • yea i agree district 9 and cloverfeild are awesome. district 9 is a bit better

  • You're joking, right? Coverfield was a piece of fucking shit.

  • Watch it before you judge.

It doesn't look low budget at all.

  • @ThatJacquelynChick I know it looks like a 100 million dollar movie

  • I saw "what was in the arm bandagde" thing comming when he was able to pull of his nails with a gentle push.

  • I think these 2 reviewers missed the point in the correlation with apartheid in South Africa. That is why they had South African accents, having American or British accents just wouldn't have given the same sense of the mistreatment of people in that country, or infact the whole continent. The sense of realism would have been lost too i believe, if it was too Americanised, or globalised as the reviewers were faulting it for not being as such.

    Brilliant film, 10/10 from me.

  • Exactly

The underlying point seemed to be the reflection of South Africa's history in the aliens.

    Completely agree

  • I agree, but then if you haven't lived it(apartheid) it will be difficult to get all the 'hints', like using Christopher Johnson as a name for an Alien.

  • Fuck Star Trek

  • I personally 100% think the Prawns are human! There is a scene where Christopher's son holds his next to Wikus and says "Look! We are the same" I believe that is why the fluid changed Wikus so fast. (Long ago we went into space for whatever reason... We find this new element on a planet, side effect being turned into prawns, which is why Chris knows he can change him back.) It's just my theory. I say the ship came back (to escape persecution, recon, or whatever). Only to say, "Bad idea"

  • his name is not Vikus....the name is

    Wikus Van De Merwe

    spectacular flick... brilliant and genius!

Christopher's little son made me laugh every time he came on screen

    LOL

    got cat food?

  • @FTWyousuck That's how you ponounce Wikus. In afrikaans a w is pronounced like a v.

  • I loved District 9.... but I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only person on the planet that loved Cloverfield. I freakin loved Cloverfield. I thought it was awesome and brilliant. I'm not sure why people are over analyzing it haha

  • Don't worry... you're not the only person who loved Cloverfield, AmazonKC.

ON another note, This movie also gets a 10/10 from me too.

When the movie ended, EVERYONE in the theater clapped(Same as TraceurDom lol).

One of, if not THE, best movie I have ever seen in years, and, that's saying a lot.

    =)

  • Your not the only one who likes Cloverfield I do to

  • @AmazonKC You not alone, i love Cloverfield very much as well. I think its underappresiated

  • @AmazonKC hahah I loved it too, but most of the people didnt :(

  • I jsut got the flower bit at the end :) this movie is defo 10/10 i was amazed and for the first time in my life i was in a cinema where everyone clapped ! Love the way he says fuck hahah

  • he says 'fok' it's the afrikaans version of fuck ;)

  • I love the character vickus and how he has to kiss corporate ass and then the consequences related to that. like when he didn't want to let on he was feeling sick.

  • fuck you... i liked cloverfield

    gnar gnar gnar

  • Nice review !!!...This movie is an instant classic, Can't wait for the sequel. I hope it won't take "3 years" for it to come out !!!

  • This was a genuinely great movie. Cannot wait for District 10.

  • If vickus was transforming in prawns and christofer said he knows what can do that. That mean he has already seen some one get transformed before. So my question is : Do the prawns apperence are their first apperence ? maybe they all have been changed (by accident ?)? So then the next question is : what is the really physical apperence of the prawns ?

  • i like this review but that bitch in the video is horrible

  • dis movie looks brilliant cant wait to see it =)

  • Best movie I've SEEN IN A WHILE !!! CANT WAIT FOR A SEQUEL :D (hope there will be)

  • love this film.. the director of photography comes from my city

  • i think the reason the fluid changed wikus was since it took the alien's DNA to work they're stuff. when it got into him it changed him

  • District 9 should be nominated for Best Picture. Next to Watchmen(just saying)

  • It's such a friggin' awsome movie :) definitely the best movie this year i think.

  • was that prawn in the end viccus?

  • its wikus but they prnounce it vikkus and yes it was

  • yep.

  • Most Likely

  • Yeah it was.

  • dude not the summer!!! its the best movie of the year!!!!! you tell me whats better

  • what did i think of the movie? Well i just got back from watching it for the fourth time!! I have never gone to see a movie in theaters so many times in my life!

  • Thank you, thank you for not setting the movie in the United States. This is another reason of why this is a very very good sci-fi movie.

  • I was getting tired of these new movies that came out like Transformers 2 or G.I. Joe, which were not bad, but didn't make up for the hipe but this movie surpassed my expectations. One of the best movies I've seen in a while.

  • I loved the ending, it Leaves you happy and sad and the same time! I will definitely buy a copy when it comes out on DVD! Here's to hoping for a Extended Director's Cut like The 3-Disc King Kong as they are both made in part by Peter Jackson! 5/5 For Sure! Go See it! You won't be disappointed! You may feel sick at some times but It's too good to miss!

  • never seen anything like it, amazing movie and for the amount of money they put in haha

  • Just got back from watching the movie at a 11:00pm showing. All I really want to say...I want one of those "Prawn B-21 laser assault-blaster".I'll trade for all human made guns I have( Sig Sauer p228,S&W model 640 in .357 magnum,Glock 19).I'll also add in my '08 Lexus 350,my condominum home, and my pet dog Beagle.Okay, not enough, how about my...

  • dude ur messed.. what would you use that gun for...

  • best sci-fi of the decade.

  • agreed

  • so far yes ^^ but james camerons avatar is supposed to come out next year too

  • since matrix

  • I saw district 9 yesterday.. IT WAS AWESOME!

  • But wait...Star Trek was terrible....

  • 2 things:

    1) There should be no sequel. Like Moon, you should write the rest of the story yourself.

    2) What's up with the random zooming in and zooming out? The first few times it happened, I thought I was going crazy. Is there a point to it? Or do you just like irritating people?

  • god damn i wanna see this movie so bad i feel a slight need to cry.

  • i suggest not watching reviews before you have seen it, you will ruin the experience.

  • the reviews only get me more hyped up. its like injecting the incredible hulk with bull shark testosterone.

  • I liked the lead guy. I don't see why everyone sides with Christopher. To me, he didn't have a compelling character arc. Wikus was awesome.

  • jeezus were you guys reviewing cloverfield or district 9? other than that it was awesome

  • More like best of the year

  • This move was amazing and unlike anything I had seen before. It had great characters that felt very real and I really cared about them. The jokes were all spot on and the action scenes blew me away. Everyone must see this movie its spectacular.

  • Yeah it started out pretty slow and I was sad to see what happened to Wikus...hopefully they'll make a District 10. I think the only thing that turned me off was how it ended. Other than that it was a good movie. Definitely original which is different for this summer's movies.

  • I really want to see it, but it's rated R. Why's it rated R? If say a 14 year old wanted to see, could they?

  • There are some gory moments and some parts that are as hard to watch as videos of people actually being killed in third-world countries. I don't think it's appropriate for MOST 14 year olds, but there could definitely be exceptions.

  • It's not rated R in Australia, only MA 15+, so I'm gonna see it on the weekend with a few friends.

    I'm 15 by the way.

  • theres a lot of gory moments and about 50-100 "fucks"(fuck, fucken, fucker) anyways im 13 i forced my mom to go into it with me so i could watch it lol

  • @Jacey517 Mostly it has alot of gore and killing. Also I thought that they cursed a bit too much.

  • It was packed where I saw it as well. I had to sit front row. There were loud, obnoxious people as usual, but this film actually shut them up after about 10 minutes. It even made the douches pay attention.

  • Glad I skipped the spoilers this time. Finally, another great sci fi film that wasn't a remake, a sequel or cast with BIG STARS! What great performances and characters, too. A big 10 for me.

Normally I would say bring on a sequel if the film is great and original, but I want to see what this guy comes up with NEXT. Stick with limited budgets and keep final cut, Neil! You can do so much with so little.

And the RED camera work (mixed with other formats of course) was wonderful.

  • i really really wanna see this....but its the 16th and theres not even a trailer for it on our tvs...hell i only know of this movie because of the internet...are we over here in ireland and the uk gonna get to see this or is it not coming out here?

  • at went friday at 3:30 pm and it was packed.

  • Great Review guys. The Movie blew me away also. Me and some folks are going to see it again Sunday.

  • Spielberg, The a new gunfighter in town!

  • The best 2009 summer movie for sure! I agree 100% Its a must see film!

  • This movie is an instant classic and will cement itself along with other sci-fi classics such as the Matrix, Terminator, Terminator 2, and Aliens! I'm going to go see it again for the second time today.

Finally a movie that has both style and "substance". Neill blomkamp put both Michael Bay and Mcg to shame! Hopefully Hollywood will let directors and visionaries of this ilk take the reins on films like this and keep hacks such as Steven Somers away from our favorite genres.

    THIS MOVIE ROCKS!

  • At first I was worried it would be an Alien Nation rip off but It was not! I am glad that the aliens were not humanoid looking so it made it more believable :)
