They pretty much introduced MMA. But they always lacked one thing. They were terrible when it came to conditioning and sports medicine (steroids). They could no longer win any fights because of that.

@Waterman117 it seems like what you're trying to say is that every athlete uses steroids. I don't think this is true at all. I think MANY do, but that doesn't make it ok. and it doesen't justify royce's use of roids.
also I don't think sakabura used steroids for that fight. using the logic "other people use steroids so he must too" just doesen't resonate.

Being a complete fighter means being well rounded, and if you limit yourself, you've already lost.
@Waterman117 there is no justification for cheating. if you cheat, you don't deserve the win. I love Royce. He was the pioneer of BJJ, Helio's perfect vessle. He is every fighters hero. But that does not make him taking steroids ok.

what the fuck do you even know about steroids, u jealous nobody !? u keep quoting like a fucking parrot "x25 the normal values" but u don't even know anything about roids, the human body, sports medicine and most likely about sports in general. talking all this trash shows u are jealous and that would still be OK cuz u're not the only one, but insisting that a guy who has been looking like a fucking cardboard plank all of his career has always been "on roids" makes u an hating ignorant bastard.
Funny thing is I am NOT for the banning of the substance in fact I oppse the entire war on drug but as I have told people abut marijuana, me not wanting to imprison people for possession of sch doesn't mean I advocate using it. Medical research is unanimous about the harm of ABUSING steroids. furthermore very few people ever need to use them. Simple hard work and nutrition will work for 99% of us who do not need world class physiques.
KKxKn Even if he did use steriod's (which I doubt he did), Do you think he is the first to do so. Just imagine how many fighters you admire and I guarantee that over 50% have used steriods and just haven't been caught. Not to mention that not all steriods are illegal(only the one's with side effects) and it is very hard to tell the difference in a drug test. If you ever get a chance to meet Royce , ask him if he has any steriods you can buy from him..... and see what happens to your lame ass!
steroidsR4losers/superpredatorr (all the same "person", for lack of a better word)...a pathetic example of a little circus freak, grotesque and with an incredibly underdeveloped and highly unattractive body most closely resembling that of a VERY sick prepubescent girl.
people think roids makes you big. Marion jones took roids. It makes you stronger but you don't build huge muscle unless you try to build it. It matters what kind of roids you are on to. But he took them and it made faster and stronger for the fight. Its gay their jujistu is balony they picked fights agianst guys who couldn't combat their style now where are they? Not in ufc.
A man can cut 20 lbs of water before the weigh in. So the weight theory is irrelevent. Besides, he may have been taking something that makes the body produce more than normal levels of testosterone... Which is also illegal in all sports. I'm afraid the test does not lie.
I wonder if this guy has any proof and if he would be worth taken to court or just another waste of time.
Getting popular has a lot to do with your attitudes but being a good athlete or not, (it) doesn't.
And if you've watched someone being successfull in a long career in something, why would he have to go competing over his 40s to get judged and recognition ? Not just Royce and MMA, but anyone in anything.
which guy do you mean by having proof? Royce or the author of this vid?
Both of Royces samples tested positive for steroids. He was suspended by the CSAC from fighting for the remainder of his fighting license after the second Saku fight, which was about a year.
i am a student of a renzo gracie academy in New Jersey, everyone saying hes an asshole in here I've met him many times... nicest and humblest man you could ever meet
Where are the mighty Gracies today??? Maybe the MMA world is better without their bad attitudes. Even when they won they had bad attitudes. To them it wasn't even a sport.
Yeah, it's all about family and honor and all that crap. Haha. Who the put their family and honor in question in the first place? They have issues, man. They're the type who are easily into joining terrrorist groups.
Ahh. I would never call them terrorists. They are just poor losers. Not so good for the evolving sport of mma. They give little respect to others, especially when they lose.
@railroadtrash09 Renzo has a fight in the UFC against matt hughes coming up. he's one of the most respected mma fighters there is. Ralek i believe is with Dream. and Rolles is with the UFC. I don't like what Royce did or Rickson's trash talk, but i wouldn't lump all the Gracies with them either.
And just so i don't get completely ripped for defending some of the Gracies lol. Sakuraba's the greatest fighter I've ever had the privilage of watching.
@panther2552 Renzo is a better athelete than the other Gracies. He is better for the sport than the others and seems to be more on his own. I believe he is very capable of beating hughes, as long as he can stay away from his punches.
@railroadtrash09 Because it isn't a sport to The Gracies. Vale Tudo is not a sport, it is No-Holds-Barred streetfighting. The Gracies come from an entire different era than what we see today. The Gracies are the shit.
@TGUNZ562 The fact is that it is a sport. The trouble with the Gracies was that they didn't treat it like a sport. Anyone can be a sore loser and it's not that big of deal, but when you are a bad winner, then you are no better than a bully. Vale tudo has fewer rules but still a sport too.
@railroadtrash09 Physical combat is NOT a sport. Boxing, MMA, Taekwondo, Judo, Wrestling, none of these forms of COMBAT are sports. They are referred to as such to make people lose sight of what is going on in the ring. Vale Tudo at the time of UFC I sure in the hell wasn't a sport. Trust me, The Gracies share my view. There is nothing "sport" about fighting.
@TGUNZ562 I guess your definition of sport is in question then because Boxing Taekwondo, judo, and wrestling are olympic sports. There are rules in vale tudo contrary to what you have been told, and it is an international sport... True "no rules fights" are illegal and for good reasons. Mainly because the fighters end up with very short careers and health problems. The only people participating in those venues are retards who couldn't cut it in the sport.
@railroadtrash09 As I said, the only reason any form of combat is called a "sport" is to water it down.... Vale Tudo=Anything Goes, learn some Portugese, buddy.
@TGUNZ562 I'm glad to see you know what your talking about. I have attended several Vale Tudo tournaments, so thanks for letting me know what it means in english. You sound like some kind of genius. Some of us come from the early UFC and Vale Tudo era... You obviously come from the sit on my ass and watch a bunch of Power Ranger era...
@railroadtrash09 Actually, I'm from the remember being a 7 year old kid and my dad bringing home The Ultimate Ultimate 2 in December of '96 and falling in love with MMA era. Get real, your a joke.
@TGUNZ562 Like I said, get off your power ranger ass and look up any of the venues that you said IE. MMA, vale tudo, judo, taekwondo, boxing, and all the other disciplines that you don't think are sports and READ the definitions... Better yet, grow some nutz and try any of them. They are all safer than football and I'm sorry to say true SPORTS!
@TGUNZ562 Your a Marine and don't know that MMA is a sport?! Oh, I got it, your also a UFC fighter and a Power Ranger... You demonstrate all the evidence that you are not a service member. Get off the video games and my nutz...
@railroadtrash09 As I said, the only reason any form of combat has ever been called a sport was to gain mainstream acceptance. MMA is one on one combat, not a sport. Come on out to Vegas, I'll show you exactly what I mean.
@TGUNZ562 LOL you're a joke... Put down the controller and stop saying you're a Marine. Your making real Marines look bad. I served under both the first and second Marine div. in the REAL combat zone. If you think mma is combat and not a sport then I have some advice, grab your sack and join the fight. I'm done wasting time on you "Power Ranger".
R u really gonna pick fights on youtube? Cmon u expect me to belive that you r a marine if you spend your time on youtube have internet fights with people you dont know. You could be in the marines idk but if you are you should start acting like it and not fight with most likely a little kid.
@joeylz96 Because I'm having a conversation with someone regarding if MMA should be considered a "sport"? Yes, I spend about 5 minutes a day responding to my youtube comments, SMH. What a fucking idiot.
@railroadtrash09 if it wasn't for the Gracie's you wouldn't even be watching the ufc it was founded by Rorion Gracie. And the first, second, and forth ufc champion was Royce Gracie. So how can you say that mma would be better without the Gracie's when it was built on there name.
@railroadtrash09 Think about what you said. Lemme spell it out slowly for you. MIXED MARTIAL ARTS is a mixture of different styles of martial arts. Following me? Jujitsu is one of these martial arts. Therefore, Jusitsu IS a martial arts. Did we learn something new today?
@IsHeDied No shit genius... I train and have been in tourneys myself. My friends all train as well. I grew up around martial arts. MMA and Jujitsu are still sports.
@railroadtrash09 Oh of course you do! There's thousands of mma fighters on the internet, I've trained myself, I have a black belt in BJJ, a brown in TKD, and a Masters in Sambo lmao!
@IsHeDied Appearently, you don't realize a sport when you see one. So Someone has to break it down for ya Telle Tubby style. The whole debate is weather mma is a sport or not. Wake up Power Ranger...
@railroadtrash09 When sport becomes just a pastime because you're so used to winning, it's easy to catch a bad attitude. Hell I'd be high and mighty myself if I kicked everyone's ass that came up to me.
even when they won they had bad attitudes? You must have missed all of ufc 1-4 after royce gracie won every match he proclaimed how tough the guys he fought were and how well they fought, and thats back when it was REAL fighting, NOW mma is just a sport.
@railroadtrash09 Where are the gracies today? Hmm, maybe look at BJ Penn, Demian Maia, or Ricardo Almeida? Some of the many top level MMA fighters they have trained
If it wasn't for Maeda will there be a Family Gracie? If it wasn't for Kano will there be Maeda and the family gracie.
We honor what the Gracies have given us but entirely Fail to honor what ancient Jujutsu masters have given us which was preserved by Kano or it is gone forever as Guns Replaced the Samurai.
EVERYBODY HONORS THE GRACIES BUT NEVER THE MENTION FOR MAEDA OR KANO.
True are your words but does prove anything on the steroid controversy.
@redcapKO If the testing is questionable, it would not be used in nearly every sport on the planet. I'm sure Royce was tired of getting whooped so he cheated... By the way, both Maeda and Kano are very much revered by those who matter to the sport.
Never mentions Maeda? Maedas pictures are all over the gracie academy, theres not one documentary about the gracies that doesn't have Maeda in it, you can talk shit all you want about japanese jiu jitsu, everyone knows where BJJ came from, its not a secret, Helio molded the art to what he saw fight and created the revolution in ground fighting we see today, and i dont see any japanese jiu jitsu masters taking gold at abu dhabi.
most people don't use steroids to actually enhance the outright performance...but as a recovery aid. i doubt he took them long enough for them to actually help that much.
people say he used steroids in this fight but doesn't anyone remember him and matt hughes? he had him in a straight arm bar for how long how hard? Matt hughes even admitted to hearing his arm pop and stuff to me right there doesn't sound right think about that but really who cares? from the looks of it he needed the steroids
Does anybody knows Rickson Gracie ? Well, he retired unbeaten, after more than 500 fights around the world. He was the best Gracie, a kind of legend. Unfortunately he is old now (51). The true is that BJJ is the best groundwork, that's the reason for Brock Lesnar being training with Rodrigo Comprido, a champion of BJJ.
Rickson gracie got knocked out via uchimata by a judo/sambo fighter. He also usually picks his rule sets and opponents. He's not as great as you've been led to believe.
"In 1993 at the U.S. Sambo Championships, undefeated Rickson Gracie was matched with multiple Judo and Sambo champion Ron Tripp. Tripp threw Gracie to the canvas by "Uchimata" in 47 seconds and Gracie's shoulders touched the floor, thus giving Tripp "absolute" victory under U.S. Sambo rules. Rickson complained that he didn't understand the rules. It should be mentioned that Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a ground based discipline." ---
his shoulder touched the floor!! what kind of rules are they. what a bunch of Soft Cocks!!! Rickson Gracie would Destroy anyone in his prime..Stand up or Ground fighting. EVERYONE in MMA trains in BJJ in the modern era because of the Gracie family. RESPECT..
Rickson claims to be 400-0. his Father and many of his family have said it's a false claim. that he even counts rolling around in practice with students as victories.
he's 11-0 in MMA, never fighting a competitor who knew much about ground fighting. He claimed he could be Sakuraba, Bas Rutten and Fedor, yet when Sakuraba and Bas challenged him years ago he backed down from the fight.
I'm not knocking anything from brazil nor am i knocking BJJ. I'm still a very big fan of Renzo and Royler. But, when it's Rickson who's saying he can beat these men so easily, yet won't fight them that shows his character. He made the claim, they stepped up, then he backed down.
and remember it was Rickson who's said many times ages doesn't matter, he'd beat them either way. He's a legend in BJJ yes, not of MMA.
Kazushi Sakuraba was the only MMA fighter to ever beat all four Gracies... (Royler, Royce, Renzo, and Ryan)
No one saw the second match up... The first match was shown all over the world and Sakuraba went down in the history books forever as "The Gracie Hunter."
He also gave Royler, Royce, and Ryan their first loses and Renzo his second.
Royce knew he couldn't beat Sakuraba and didn't want to give his people shame so instead used drugs to win the second match with dishonor.
We were talking about Sakuraba, but... ask Liddell about Mauricio Shogun, and ask Cro-Cop about Gabriel Gonzaga, and ask Rich Franklin about Lyoto Machida.
And ask these guys what they think about other fighters that have beaten them.
And ask every fighter (from Brasilia or where else) what they think about Fedor.
Well, Machida indeed is unbeaten till now, but he is half Japanese and his main style is Karate, not a Brazilian style, so you cannot built your arguments on him.
Machida was born in Salvador/Bahia. It's in Brazil, so he is brazilian. Karate was much more popular in Brazil than Jiu Jitsu, before the UFC. But in fact Karate and Jiu Jitsu are oriental styles. Brazilians only developed a diferent "kind of Jiu Jitsu" called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. All the fighters in the world agree that the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was a revolution in the sport, and MANY of them have been training in Brazil. Fedor is good but there will be a brazilian in his way. (lol)
My english is not good, but I'll try to expose my opinion as good as I can. In the begining of UFC Royce show to the world the superiority of BJJ against fighters stronger than him, as Dan Severn. Now BJJ technics was assimilated by the others fighters (many or them trained in Brazil) and the same ocurred with other styles. Now we have a mix of styles. But the amazing thing is that the majority of fights now are decided by the BOXING. There is no style better than a good PUNCH.
I will explain. In the old days (UFC), everyone fought the same way: punch, kick, punch. Nobody thought of groundwork because groundwork doesnt work in real streetfight. But groundwork WORKS in the ring. So when Gracies came, they surprised EVERYONE. Nobody knew how to defend because noone knew how to play groundgame. Thats surprise advantage for Gracies. BJJ is not superior. Its worthless.
But now. Things have changed. Everyone knows groundgame. So now surprise advantage is GONE.
Without the advantage, BJJ absolutely SUCKS. Since BJJ cant win anymore, the strikers (punch, kick, punch) who can now counter BJJ and groundgame dominates the ring yet again. This proves one thing: BJJ is absolutely worthless.
So gracies cant win anymore, so they pick fights against "noobs", and "no name" fighters. And they still cant win, they cheat by taking steroids. Its pathetic and only shows one thing: BJJ sucks.
Conclusion: Learn some groundgame and BJJ cant do shiat against you.
All the ancient styles like Kungfu have been proven to work. And when people realized that they work, they adapted the styles for themselves. Thats how other styles are born. And styles that are proven not to work, are soon forgotten through history. BJJ is now in that phase as it has proven to be worthless. It can no longer dominate. People adapted some groundwork to counter BJJ and now its over.
turns out u r a fucking idiot , if bjj sucks so much ass then why does the most advanced and powerful military in the world teach it to all military personal.
Brazilians are the best, not the strongers. What did Brock Lesnar do when he was beaten by Frank Mir ? He started to train BJJ with the brazilian Rodrigo Comprido.
he broke a few gracie arms, so now they know. fighter came to him to prove they were the best, he didn't make up rules for the gracie fights like they did, and he beat their asses.
the gracies had to have their whole family at ringside.
fuck the gracies they are a bunch of faggots who think ju jitsu is the best martial art....when clearly they all got owned by the japanese catch wrestler, fuckign steroid using fucker fuck fucker!!!!!!

If you ever get a chance to meet Royce , ask him if he has any steriods you can buy from him..... and see what happens to your lame ass!

people think roids makes you big.

Getting popular has a lot to do with your attitudes but being a good athlete or not, (it) doesn't.
And if you've watched someone being successfull in a long career in something, why would he have to go competing over his 40s to get judged and recognition ? Not just Royce and MMA, but anyone in anything.

Sakuraba's the greatest fighter I've ever had the privilage of watching.
panther2552 1 year ago
@panther2552 Renzo is a better athelete than the other Gracies. He is better for the sport than the others and seems to be more on his own. I believe he is very capable of beating hughes, as long as he can stay away from his punches.
railroadtrash09 1 year ago
@railroadtrash09 Because it isn't a sport to The Gracies. Vale Tudo is not a sport, it is No-Holds-Barred streetfighting. The Gracies come from an entire different era than what we see today. The Gracies are the shit.
TGUNZ562 1 year ago
@TGUNZ562 The fact is that it is a sport. The trouble with the Gracies was that they didn't treat it like a sport. Anyone can be a sore loser and it's not that big of deal, but when you are a bad winner, then you are no better than a bully. Vale tudo has fewer rules but still a sport too.
railroadtrash09 1 year ago
@railroadtrash09 Physical combat is NOT a sport. Boxing, MMA, Taekwondo, Judo, Wrestling, none of these forms of COMBAT are sports. They are referred to as such to make people lose sight of what is going on in the ring. Vale Tudo at the time of UFC I sure in the hell wasn't a sport. Trust me, The Gracies share my view. There is nothing "sport" about fighting.
TGUNZ562 1 year ago

railroadtrash09 1 year ago
@TGUNZ562 I guess your definition of sport is in question then because Boxing Taekwondo, judo, and wrestling are olympic sports. There are rules in vale tudo contrary to what you have been told, and it is an international sport... True "no rules fights" are illegal and for good reasons. Mainly because the fighters end up with very short careers and health problems. The only people participating in those venues are retards who couldn't cut it in the sport.
railroadtrash09 1 year ago
@railroadtrash09 As I said, the only reason any form of combat is called a "sport" is to water it down.... Vale Tudo=Anything Goes, learn some Portugese, buddy.

True are the words you say BUT
If it wasn't for Maeda will there be a Family Gracie? If it wasn't for Kano will there be Maeda and the family gracie.
We honor what the Gracies have given us but entirely Fail to honor what ancient Jujutsu masters have given us which was preserved by Kano or it is gone forever as Guns Replaced the Samurai.
EVERYBODY HONORS THE GRACIES BUT NEVER THE MENTION FOR MAEDA OR KANO.
True are your words but does prove anything on the steroid controversy.
redcapKO 2 years ago 3
True are your words, Maeda deserves alot of respect and should be mentioned whenever the gracies are mentioned.
The gracie family put in alot of work to get where they are. maeda put in alot of work before he got to brazil.
my apologies for not mentioning Master Maeda.
beeb1421 2 years ago 3
@redcapKO If the testing is questionable, it would not be used in nearly every sport on the planet. I'm sure Royce was tired of getting whooped so he cheated... By the way, both Maeda and Kano are very much revered by those who matter to the sport.

AntonioVictorPassos 2 years ago
Rickson gracie got knocked out via uchimata by a judo/sambo fighter. He also usually picks his rule sets and opponents. He's not as great as you've been led to believe.
BakaYaru13 2 years ago 2
"In 1993 at the U.S. Sambo Championships, undefeated Rickson Gracie was matched with multiple Judo and Sambo champion Ron Tripp. Tripp threw Gracie to the canvas by "Uchimata" in 47 seconds and Gracie's shoulders touched the floor, thus giving Tripp "absolute" victory under U.S. Sambo rules. Rickson complained that he didn't understand the rules. It should be mentioned that Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a ground based discipline." ---
It wasn't a fight but a TRAP.

Rickson claims to be 400-0. his Father and many of his family have said it's a false claim. that he even counts rolling around in practice with students as victories.
he's 11-0 in MMA, never fighting a competitor who knew much about ground fighting. He claimed he could be Sakuraba, Bas Rutten and Fedor, yet when Sakuraba and Bas challenged him years ago he backed down from the fight.
panther2552 2 years ago
When all these fighters challenged Rickson
he was 40 years old. The reason Rickson didin't fight was only
money. He asks for much money to fight because he is a legend,
more old than the others and deserves more than they had offer
to him. I'm not going to answer more questions abaout this subject
because the Gracies work and legacy is known around the world. It's
usual trying to depreciate the things from Brasil.
Maybe you think brazilian football is "very bad" too. LOL
AntonioVictorPassos 2 years ago
I'm not knocking anything from brazil nor am i knocking BJJ. I'm still a very big fan of Renzo and Royler. But, when it's Rickson who's saying he can beat these men so easily, yet won't fight them that shows his character. He made the claim, they stepped up, then he backed down.
and remember it was Rickson who's said many times ages doesn't matter, he'd beat them either way. He's a legend in BJJ yes, not of MMA.
panther2552 2 years ago
You have your reasons, but let me tell wath I've heard from Tito Ortiz

Who cares...!?!

AntonioVictorPassos 2 years ago
And ask these guys what they think about other fighters that have beaten them.
And ask every fighter (from Brasilia or where else) what they think about Fedor.
Well, Machida indeed is unbeaten till now, but he is half Japanese and his main style is Karate, not a Brazilian style, so you cannot built your arguments on him.
Mudjin 2 years ago 4
Machida was born in Salvador/Bahia. It's in Brazil, so he is brazilian. Karate was much more popular in Brazil than Jiu Jitsu, before the UFC. But in fact Karate and Jiu Jitsu are oriental styles. Brazilians only developed a diferent "kind of Jiu Jitsu" called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. All the fighters in the world agree that the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was a revolution in the sport, and MANY of them have been training in Brazil. Fedor is good but there will be a brazilian in his way. (lol)
AntonioVictorPassos 2 years ago
Fedor is actually ranked as the best heavyweight fighter in the world and he has beaten nogueira and other brazilian fighters...
And at less in UFC, fighters with a basic style of wrestling are more succesful that such ones with bjj...
Mudjin 2 years ago 4
My english is not good, but I'll try to expose my opinion as good as I can. In the begining of UFC Royce show to the world the superiority of BJJ against fighters stronger than him, as Dan Severn. Now BJJ technics was assimilated by the others fighters (many or them trained in Brazil) and the same ocurred with other styles. Now we have a mix of styles. But the amazing thing is that the majority of fights now are decided by the BOXING. There is no style better than a good PUNCH.
AntonioVictorPassos 2 years ago
I will explain. In the old days (UFC), everyone fought the same way: punch, kick, punch. Nobody thought of groundwork because groundwork doesnt work in real streetfight. But groundwork WORKS in the ring. So when Gracies came, they surprised EVERYONE. Nobody knew how to defend because noone knew how to play groundgame. Thats surprise advantage for Gracies. BJJ is not superior. Its worthless.
But now. Things have changed. Everyone knows groundgame. So now surprise advantage is GONE.
Elbottoo 2 years ago
Without the advantage, BJJ absolutely SUCKS. Since BJJ cant win anymore, the strikers (punch, kick, punch) who can now counter BJJ and groundgame dominates the ring yet again. This proves one thing: BJJ is absolutely worthless.
So gracies cant win anymore, so they pick fights against "noobs", and "no name" fighters. And they still cant win, they cheat by taking steroids. Its pathetic and only shows one thing: BJJ sucks.
Conclusion: Learn some groundgame and BJJ cant do shiat against you.
Elbottoo 2 years ago 4
This is natural evolution, my friend.
Evolution.
