@bestamerica Apparently our military tested 35mm proximity fuzed rounds in one of our twin gun systems (can't remember if it was the Oerlikon GDF or Marksman). occasionally the shell from one gun would set off the one from the other.
Swedish shit kicks ass. I'm glad the US bought it. It seems the US has been afraid to buy many foreign weapons because of pride/immature politics. Honestly there should be no problem with SEALs using a Tavor or downed airmen using an F2000 or P90. What's more important, getting to say that you made a weapon or kicking ass with it?
The precision and multi-purpose munitions forgo any worry of long term engagement. The magazine would exceed the need of projected close quarter engagement. Bofors continues to produce state of the art fire power.
They're not "sucking up" any "glory", they're simply advertising a product from their portfolio so they can sell it (what sort of glory are Bofors being diddled out of for inventing a big gun, anyway? A statue, some medals? Strippers?). At which point does the video claim BAE solely created this weapon? Actually don't bother, the answer is of course "none".
If this gun's as good as you reckon maybe someone can have a crack at taking out that massive chip you've got on your shoulder.
@Scurck The 3P is what makes this gun what it is. Without it, it would just be a rapid firing everyday gun. The 3P really makes it a god as an inner line of defence!!!
220 rounds per minute. 110 round magazine. About 30 seconds of fire. How are the magazines reloaded after an engagement? Would hate to be on deck performing a reload while still trying to repel a multi-wave attack.
@MaxCruise73 If what ever its firing at gets within gun range, they have already penetrated its air defenses. Very few if any missiles should penetrate the AEGIS air defense system, these guns are weapons of last resort.
somehow, you forget that sea-skimmers will avoid the AEGIS defense completely by being under the radar horizon until they are withing 16 to 10 mile of the targets...
@MaxCruise73 Well, since it's 57 mm and capable of firing only one round of ammunition if that is all what is needed (which is often the case with small boats) the wave would have to be pretty big. It's worst with something like the Phalanx that needs to be fired at a minimum of 3000 rpm every time.
Yeah but you never shoot for a minute straight. 120 ready rounds mean you can service 40 targets for with a 3 round burst. Thats a good amount of targets.
@MaxCruise73 The rounds are stored is a 40 round 'ready use' mag and to lots of 40 round 'intermediate' mags in the mount. The 'intermediate' mags are reloaded via a hoist from the main mag deep in the hull.

@MaxCruise73 lol don't be silly :) its a below decks operation as one mag is being expended another is loaded under the turret , also single rounds can be fed directly to the turret from the fusing room :) lovely bit of kit hey :)
I think we spend too much on our military budget (50% of the world's spending)but the weapons sure are cool!

one gun on the turret is not enough,,,
better use twin guns on the turret,,, ( ll ll ) ll ll ll ll
bestamerica 10 months ago
@bestamerica Too bad twin guns don't work well with smart ammunition, especially if the rate of fire is high.

yeah but we need a 57 mm rifle
nooogai2 1 year ago
@nooogai2 well it wont be considered a rifle so it would be a 57mm cannon and it would destroy your shoulder

When you think that the 57mil was used as an AT gun during WW2... :P
oOCrossroadsOo 1 year ago
if this is the same with 57 mm Mk2 then you have to lift the barrel 77 degree to reload the magazines.
that will really tell the enemy that you have out of ammo at your mags.
to reload 104 rounds to the mags will need more than 5 minutes... (at the Mk2)
trumiyarto 1 year ago
@trumiyarto The fact that you stopped firing is probably going to be a lot more obvious than lifting the barrel to 77 degrees.

0:44 fire the guy who made the graphics. 9x5x2=90 not 120, there is only 90 rounds in the mag. :P

The 57mm gun and 3P ammo is of course Swedish made BOFORS!!! =D
This is BAE sucking up the glory even though these systems where already in service before BAE got its hands on Bofors.

Still, an impressive weapon.

i think there reloaded from inside, under the deck.
SkullKing11841 2 years ago
@MaxCruise73 the gun can be continually reloaded from underneath the deck.
when it is emptying one magazine, the other one can be loaded separately.

@MaxCruise73 What kind of multi wave attack are we talking about? Three to five rounds would probably be enough for most threats = 36 to 22 targets.

@MaxCruise73 One wonders why the magazine is so small. They aren't firing 16" shells here.
