There is 8 "contrade" who play flags:singlr; double little team and big team. The last sunday is the real Palio in Ariostea Piazza with 4 stages run of the Putte(girls) Putti(boys) asini(donkeys) and Cavalli (horses). I will suggest to stop by if you back in Italy in May.
Paolo - thank you for your comments. Very interesing history. Unfortunately, I will not be in Italy in May; this year I go in September. My company has an affiliate located in Bologna. My visit to Ferrara will always be remembered because of the city's beauty and friendliness. I plan to return there for another visit in September (I think there is a hot air baloon festival at that time).
Hi Carole. This video was taken in May of '06. My wife and I returned this year and visited Ravenna. We really enjoyed that town. We are fortunate to have good friends in Bologna that have pointed us to a lot of great places that are not typical tourist towns.

I saw this too, in late September 2007, at the medieval and hot air balloon festival. All the throwers were in medieval dress. I think it's called Bandaniglio or something like that...I was in Ravenna learning Italian.
