@startnova25 She definitely approached solo drumset like Tony did. Check out the video from Zildjian day. Cindy definitely spent a lot of time studying Tony, and I although the recording quality of the video is piss poor and the drums are definitely fucked up (she's tuning them for half of the video) she's a great player. Not every drum solo needs to develop into a groove.
MvyMkr.. Jazz changes rhythms, time signatures, tempos, timbres at will. I Repeat: It's a musical expression that isn't subject to your tiny concept of musicality. A Jazz solo is an expresssion from deep within played for individuals who in turn understand that they have just heard individual expression. Keeping time matters not. So like, I appreciate how technically excellent she is - her singles are incredibly controlled and triplets on the right foot = uber impressive...
But there was absolutely nothing musical in that, and the drums are an instrument. They are to be played first and foremost as time-keepers (and there was no time to that solo!) and then as part of a musical art form, and there was nothing there but fast hand and footwork and a lot of crashing and banging about...
You haven't arrived at the level of musical sensibility that it takes to understand this musician. Just keep playing, take more lessons, continue lestening to different genre's of music and keep your pie hole shut. You may some day arrive but not this day. Today you're stinkin' up the place.

His musicality is hugely apparent in whatever he does - he can do all this stuff and ridiculous independence, but it comes out in this fundamentally musical way.

To me, and I'm guessing many drummers, "technicality" and "musicality" are not the same thing at all. It is also the drummers no.1 concern to keep time, which she most certainly did not here.
As one of my teachers once said, "musician first, drummer second," there is no flow to this, no real "music"

@ecoflame In all of my years of playing public venues, I have never felt the need to tune WHILE I was playing. There is plenty of time before a gig, or between songs.
@ClarkKasheta Billy Cobham does this too; the drums sound different when the empty room becomes a packed house. Also they both hit hard. There is no 'between songs'. Cindy walks in, straight to the drums, and plays for an hour.
Try NOT to be distracted so easily and focus on what makes the masters great. With some hard work maybe you can play with somebody like Lenny Kravitz or Joe Henderson. That would be much more respectable occupation than an 'instructor' that nobody has ever heard of.

@startnova25 To the point you made about the kit sounding like crap. First of all, I think she wants to go for a more vintage jazz sounding set, and this set achieves that gold one and a half times. Second of all, the snare and toms, especially the high mounted one, sound good, if not more. Now, I could agree with you on the bass drum, but again, that is just for the vintage jazz sound that she is trying to achieve.

@startnova25 She definitely approached solo drumset like Tony did. Check out the video from Zildjian day. Cindy definitely spent a lot of time studying Tony, and I although the recording quality of the video is piss poor and the drums are definitely fucked up (she's tuning them for half of the video) she's a great player. Not every drum solo needs to develop into a groove.

So like, I appreciate how technically excellent she is - her singles are incredibly controlled and triplets on the right foot = uber impressive...
But there was absolutely nothing musical in that, and the drums are an instrument. They are to be played first and foremost as time-keepers (and there was no time to that solo!) and then as part of a musical art form, and there was nothing there but fast hand and footwork and a lot of crashing and banging about...

@Dodjuh1001 Just because I don't like her style of playing here doesn't mean I don't have the musical knowledge to understand good playing...for the past year I've been blown away by my tutors like Pete Riley. His musicality is hugely apparent in whatever he does - he can do all this stuff and ridiculous independence, but it comes out in this fundamentally musical way.

Now let's take that concept one step further by proposing that when you say something positive about an artist's life work leave it at that. @Dodjuh1001 I think most drummers I spoke to, and most teachers at my college would agree there is a lack of "musicality" in the overindulgent use of nothing but rudiments in a drum solo. To me, and I'm guessing many drummers, "technicality" and "musicality" are not the same thing at all. It is also the drummers no.1 concern to keep time, which she most certainly did not here.
As one of my teachers once said, "musician first, drummer second," there is no flow to this, no real "music"

I love the fact that she knows how to tune a drum. most idiots can't tune their drums if their life depended on it. Then you see these guys get all upset because she can play better than they can so they so she isn't musical. drums are the first instrument.

@ecoflame In all of my years of playing public venues, I have never felt the need to tune WHILE I was playing. There is plenty of time before a gig, or between songs.

@ClarkKasheta Billy Cobham does this too; the drums sound different when the empty room becomes a packed house. Also they both hit hard. There is no 'between songs'. Cindy walks in, straight to the drums, and plays for an hour.
Try NOT to be distracted so easily and focus on what makes the masters great. With some hard work maybe you can play with somebody like Lenny Kravitz or Joe Henderson. That would be much more respectable occupation than an 'instructor' that nobody has ever heard of.
