Perfect! Great ending. Saved from being, Oh, come on, by the wonderful humor at the end. Especially the character recognition and the sprint! Robinson was marvelous. A real class act. Bennett and Duryea are the icing on the cake. What a shocker. Thanks so much for this wonderful movie that makes you happy at the end in a dreary world that is only getting worse without films like this.
I was truly beginning to feel terrible for poor Edward G!! Whew. It pays not to go spending any time with women you do not know, when the wife is away. ;)
IT WAS ONLY A DREAM! Hollywood censorship codes of the 40s did not allow people to get away with murder or corruption without punishment...great film with an easy way out. Scarlet Street is more realistic! Everybody gets punished!
i watched this several times and dont understand the ending...i dont think edward g character met the dan duryea .. character yet he recognised him at end and similary with the hat check man...what was all that about? confused you will be... but i like the movie
@pahoboye He was dreaming. At the beginning of the movie he gives a speech on murder in self defense, later he and his friends talk about the girl in the painting. He then falls asleep and the events of the day turn into a story. He does not see the Dan D.character , however in his dream he' sees " him talking to the woman. As it turns out he saw these people on his way in the club and put those faces in his story sub consciously
Well I will be a ding dong. What a wonderful, surprisingly strange movie. I thought I had it nailed all the time......and to think it was a dream within a dream. I will be ding dong. I absolutely loved this! Run man, run. Thanks so much for sharing!
Note how Nunnally Johnson's screenplay seems to be setting up the Edward G. Robinson character to be in the clear for the crime, before the "it was all a dream" ending.
Robinson, Bennett, and Duryea would reteam with Fritz Lang for "Scarlet Street", which does NOT end happily.
Great viewing. Has almost all the ingredients of the archetypal film noir, including the private detective-turned blackmailer. But what really sets the film apart is its not so typical features: the lady is not really the femme fatale type and the funny twist in the end. EGR is as competent as ever in his cerebral act and Joan Bennett epitomises the elegantly graceful beauty of the Hollywood of yore. Thanks for the upload. Look forward to more of the type.
Its an okay ending in this specific case---suicide would probably have been too depressing for a wartime audience. Anyway I think we were all pulling for Edward G. to somehow make it through.
He saved the awfully hackneyed ending with a little humor. Great film though. The ending was rotten, but, he saved it somewhat with the hat-check guy, and Dan Duryea as the doorman.
Fun movie. Of course it's a bit of a let down that they used the "oh it was all a dream" ploy - but fun just the same. By the way, was that Isabel Jewel at the end asking for a light?
The ending could not be improved on, because the Professor is such a great guy to have gotten in such a mess. it would have been so unfair for it to end tragically.
Dues ex machina, a literary device for poor storytellers where characters get out of seemingly intractable plot. Any playwright and author can tell you the weak mechanic of such an ending!
Fabulous, and I liked the ending... I needed some relief.
I felt scared for ol' Edward G. there.
The most unbelievable thing to me was that this superhot younger woman (Bennett) would be so eager to invite an older man to her place, and work so hard to get him drunk.
Unless... she was a prostitute or hoped to string him along for money.
Lang did this ending in 1920 too; we find out at the end of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" that it was all the protagonist's dream.
