I read this online....If Jesus forgave and cleansed me from "all" unrighteousness (past, present, future) as stated in 1 John 1:9, then what unrighteousness did He miss? I hope you have concluded that verses 8 and 10 are not speaking to Christians. If you have, then why would verse 9 be applicable to a Christian and be sandwiched between two non-applicable verses?
@tombo820 Verses 8 and 10 ARE speaking to Christians. The letter is addressed to BRETHREN. You sin and you need to name it, same as in the OT you BROUGHT AN ANIMAL, put your hand on the animal and named your sin as the priest slew it. The 'animal' is replaced by Christ, so you still name your sin, and this time YOU are the priest.
You will become sick and have disasters if you don't regularly name your sins to God. I gave you the way to learn Bible on that.
@tombo820 Prince or Price? We absolutely DO need to do this, and if we don't, we are severely punished. My pastor (now dead) did a series on it (free), called the Law of Double Punishment, starts at lesson number 1411 in the 1992 Spiritual Dynamics series. Goes on for a month or two, so 60+ lessons more, sequentially, at rbthieme(dot)org. They never ask for money. Lessons are live classes recorded, on mp3.
@brainouty Of course, you can just read the verse then 1Cor11 and see how that punishment works. Paul was punished for not using it, as he himself confesses in Acts 22. See also James 3-4, Psalm 32:1-5ff, Psalm 66:18ff. (The 'ff' is academic shorthand for 'and following'.)
@brainouty Joseph Prince, Asian pastor on tv. He makes it all sound very believable. I came across the mp3 on here last night. I get frustrated because I have been taught otherwise.
There is nothing wrong with confessing sins during sanctification but other than confessing that you're a sinner accepting what Jesus did on the cross for you, confession of each sin is not required for salavtion.
@Duck4212 Right, it's not necessary FOR salvation, but rather for spirituality AFTER salvation. So if you don't name your sins to God when you remember them -- or, like I do since I sin so much, just say 'I sinned, Dad!' a bizillion times a day -- you HAVE ZERO UNDERSTANDING of Bible when you read it. That's why there is so much false doctrine in the world. Christians don't use 1John1:9. But John himself used it, witness the 'we' in the verse!
IMO, all 1John chapter 1 is trying to do is to tell those who refuse to believe they have sin that they can have no fellowship or be made righteous by the blood of Jesus. By refusing to admit sin is in our lives we effectively deny what Jesus did on the cross for us. I do not believe that in 1John 1:9 the Lord means necessarily confessing every sin, since we don't even know all of our sins. IMO, he means that we must admit being a sinner (thus believing forgivness in Jesus death) for salvation.
@Duck4212 Your opinion doesn't matter. Bible matters. Suggest you start using 1John1:9 yourself, so then you can read the Bible, instead of opining on it. Sorry to be so harsh, but the translation is even plain enough, and this video showed the provenance of the verse, which was also always true in the Old Testament.
Only SAVED people can confess to God. You don't confess to a God you don't yet believe in. And the video showed the horrific penalties when a believer won't name his sins.
Excellent video. 1 John 1:9 is a critical verse for the believer. Here is a very simple way to look at it. Amos 3:3 says:
Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
Part of the range of meaning of the Greek word ὁμολογέω (homologeo) used in 1 John 1:9 is "to agree with." The believer cannot walk together with God unless he is in agreement with God, which requires no unconfessed sin in his life, because God cannot look upon sin (Hab 1:13), i.e., no confession, no fellowship with God.
What about if I have sinned over a year ago and still in that sinful state? What do you do, surely many more sins have piled up. So what do you do in that situation, for me fornication, then my body left broken and spirit left me. Anyone have an answer or am I finished and have blasphemed the Holy Spirit therefore unforgivable?
@MrManowar3 Oh darling, you are always forgivable, due to 1John1:7. Just say 'Oh DAD, I sinned, and I don't remember!' Then ALL sins are cancelled, incuding those you didn't name, as end 1John1:9 says. 'ALL wrongdoing' (Greek adikia means the violations made by a judge, since you are Royal Family). Some translate that as 'unrighteousness', which is too fuzzy, but still gets the point across.
Use 1John1:9 like breathing whenever you think of it, and go in peace!
@MrManowar3 Oh, I forgot to mention: notice you just NAME sins. Greek verb is homologew: 'confess' isn't a good translation. Rather, it means to CITE A COURT CASE, which is 1Jn1:7, the Cross. So if you don't remember exactly what kind of sin, you do know you sinned. So that's generic, covering them all, to admit you sinned.
Naming is helpful to train the brain to spot the sin in advance, so at some point that same sin will tempt you less or not at all. Think of it as TRAINING, to name.
Satan confuses and takes scriptures like these out of context....believers teach unbelievers to do and follow scripture that are meant for believers only...when they just have to believe. so they never just believe...and arent saved. How tricky. And satan torments believers with verses like this as well when they believe the lie that their SALVATION depends on it. So they become insecure about their salvation, obsessed with it when the verse is for fellowship not salvation.
You have no idea how this video has brought me clarity. My spirit completely confirms your interpretation of Scripture as God inspired.I see now how Satan absolutely distorts and makes Much More Complex that which is simple so as to confuse the real gospel! Your approach is well balanced and totally Bibllically sound. thank u
@Bellarubia18 I'm grateful he made it clear to you. My pastor harped on 1John1:9 constantly while teaching, and I learned it from my mother (who never knew my pastor). SHE learned it in Baptist Sunday school during the 1940s. So this common-sense verse gives us God's Brains.
Why Christians routinely debate its need, is beyond me. Nearly everything is a sin! So just use 1John1:9 like breathing, and you get God's Brains, just like John himself admitted in that seciton (verses 1:5-10)!
if you already believe in the Lord jesus christ as your savior, u are eternaly save, however, the issue now is when you sin you become a carnal and you will be out of felowship.. thats why you need to confest ur sins To God... this 1 john 1:9 is not a lisence to sin, but it is liscence to serve...
@schoolday333 Well said! Use 1John1:9 like breathing! That's why I call myself brainout, for Eph 4:23 says in Greek that when out of fellowship, the brain ain't workin'!
You do not understand the new covenant. That is okay, but you are probably miserable. The new covenant is the Life of Christ. He came to die, then live in everyone that trust Him with their life. It is that simple.
@Simpleman28173 No, 1John1:9 is simply a continuance in New Covenant form of the same rule as always applied: a believer names his sins to God. Video showed the OT verses. Salvation and naming sins post-salvation are two carryovers from the OT. There are others. Everything got UPGRADED in Christ, aka 'the royal law' in James 1.
But you won't understand it. No one carnal can understand Bible.
@brainouty It amazes me how people are hostile to using 1John1:9 and will twist Bible every which way, to avoid it. Should be a natural reflex to say when one is wrong. We are always admitting wrong to each other when we bump into each other or make a mistake. We see page after page of evidence in the OT and New, about admitting wrong, by believers.
Yet when it comes to the very obvious 'we' in 1John, John including himself -- all of a sudden 'we' won't do what he, David, Paul, Moses did. :)
Couldn't watch past 3 mins...way too many things incorrect. You are obvious too smart for us dummies so I will not engage you in a discussion. Just simply look at vs 8 and 10 to get the context. 9 is not talking to believers but to gnostics that say there is no such thing as sin and that because of that they have never sinned. Either way it the verse has NOTHING to do with forgiveness as it is not mentioned in the text but is spoken of as ALL sins have been forg. Mark 3:28 except unbelief
@promisedgrace Since you couldn't watch past 3 minutes, then the Holy Spirit is not in you. He is patient. No wonder, since you won't use 1 John 1:9. The tweaking of the gnostics is a secondary theme in the New Testament. But you can't read it, so good bye and good riddance.
@promisedgrace The purpose of the Word of God is about GOD, not about the gnostics. The purpose of naming sins to GOD is to have fellowship with GOD -- has zippo to do with the gnostics. Daniel named his sins and the sins of Israel to God, Daniel 9; David did it, Psalm 32:5, 66:18. That's what the Levitical sacrifices were for, as the video showed in detail.
But you couldn't watch the video's Bible verses for 3 minutes. So you can't read the 'we' in 1John, where JOHN admits he names sins!
@brainouty Personal attacks always show the inadequacy of ones position. You are citing quotes from the OT under the dispensation of law...we are under a new covenant (see Heb 8). If you want to be back under law then make sure and keep all 613 commandments in thought, word and deed. The law is meant to lead us to faith in Christ (Gal 3:24) and after that we are dead to the law (Rom 7:5).
If you would like some help with the scriptures I would be willing to lend a hand...God Bless
@promisedgrace Your personal attack shows the inadequacy of your position. You started it. I but mirror your style.
You cannot read Bible, for you cannot read the word 'we' that John profusely uses. WE must name our sins to God. Not the gnostics, WE. Same rule, as in OT.
Gnostic tweaking is a rhetorical undercurrent in John, Peter, Paul. But The Message is about GOD, not gnosticism.
Which you cannot read, as your attention spans less than 3 min. So I end writing, to stay within that limit.
I don't know, callouschristian, but you certainly live up to your sklerow Youtuber nickname. Callousness=sklerow, in Greek. And that's precisely what happens to Christians who refuse to use 1 John 1:9. Your soul ends up one big mass of scar tissue from all the self-stabbings you make to your soul. Bye.
No erased and moved comments, brian9monty. It's a Youtube glitch. You have to keep changing the Options in Youtube, and even then not all comments show. I complained to Youtube about it yesterday. I can't even see my own comments sometimes.
So don't be so quick to accuse. Your comments are not erased. I don't believe in censoring folly. :)
A saved person can come to a point where they no longer name there sin. Sins can turn into willful sins. A person can harden their heart. Every scripture mentioned is of the contrite heart. There is a falling away scripture mentions. Willful Sins can bring death(hell) to the christian. Some harden, some are decieved. But both are unrepentant and can die spiritually. No such thing as a carnal christian.
brian9monty, you are a carnal christian. For you lie against the Bible in your post. For one thing, ALL sins are an act of will, many Bible verses on that. For another thing, you CANNOT die spiritually once saved, John 10:28. You mix up the stubbornness of long carnality with instances of being out of fellowship. The former, not the latter, causes the sin unto death, 1John5:16.
So you need to use 1John1:9 & talk to Our Mutual Dad about all this, k? We all have that problem from time to time.
all sins are an act of will. I agree. but there are no carnal christians. You can be out of fellowship with unconfessed sin. You also can continue and not gain your inheritance
Bible's word 'carnal' (sarxz in Greek) means a believer who is in a state of sin unnamed to God, did you know that, brian9monty? So yes, Christians can be and usually are, carnal. That's why they read Bible so badly.
And yes, you can continue in carnality and not gain your inheritance. Saved yourself 1Cor3 -- but you don't inherit anything more.
brian9monty, Greek Bible term sarxz means 'flesh', with sarkikos meaning 'fleshly'. And Christians are CALLED fleshly by Paul in Philippians 3:18-19, 2Tim2:26-3:7; and by James (passim in his letter).
So when sinning, Christians are carnal, it's a very common Bible term for believers, see how Paul uses it throughout Corinthians. Bye now.
Oh, I forgot to add, brian9monty: I'm being harsh on you on purpose, because you have potential. Personally, I like you, but I have to ignore that fact and respond impersonally. Just thought you'd like to know.
Im talking about living. One can behave carnally. But a person cannot live a Christian life as a carnal person. 1 cor 3 is talking about behavior not living lives day to day until death. People have mis-handled this word carnal to excuse continued sin. In Christ you follow(living). Christians dont live carnal. You cant follow and not follow. NO SUCH THING AS A CARNAL CHRISTIAN.
brian9monty, you are confusing your permanent status in Christ with your fellowship status day to day. Your permanent status is SAVED, so you have a human spirit. But your soul sins (human spirit is a processor, has no volition, so no sin is ever in it). So when you do that, Bible calls you (and me of course) carnal.
Use 1John1:9 and ask Our Dad about this. That verse is vital to the spiritual life. Without it, you can spend your entire saved life down here in carnal state. So ask Our Dad.
once saved always saved is heresy. It is not taught in scripture although many ignore or misinterpret scripture to agree with their heresy. Its called a license to sin. We have many people in scripture who have lost salvation because of sin but this is ignored. This license has created another excuse to continue in sin. Many also going to hell. So sad!
No, brian9monty, OSAS is the Bible. To claim you can lose your salvation is heresy. That's why you're carnal. That's why you keep misreading Bible.
I can't help you further, you're having a hissy fit with God. Until you use 1John1:9 on your own heresies, you will remain carnal. Typical story in Christendom, the legalistic carnal believer. You are saved, but in trouble. Bye.
You're welcome, lovejesusplz. Here's the irony: my pastor stressed 1John1:9 so much I thought I would puke. Now he's dead, and I'm doing the same thing! He was right to stress it, I was wrong to be annoyed!
What a terrible 'interpretation' of 1 John 1:9 and way to use this as a 'christian bar of soap' and this is not what it intends to be communicating.
This is speaking to a Church (which can include non-believers, fence-sitters same as today) but irregardless it is 'proposing' a 'what if' position to take.
Specifically this is surely directed at Gnostics and their teachings infiltrating,
and,
What you end up doing is trying to put Christ up on a Cross again.
El Proximo, the next thing you need after salvation is 1John1:9 or you are not filled with the Spirit. So you are carnal. God saved us on the Cross, but salvation of the SOUL'S THINKING is el proximo on the list. Finalmente, our bodies get saved, 1Cor15.
So it's not a teaching, it's the BIBLE, 1John1:6-10. And if you don't learn it prontito, el proximo for you will be la pena.
1 John 1:9 is what brings me to salvation. I acknowledge my sin and put it at the foot of the cross. As John explains plainly - Christ paid for those sins, past, present and future with His sacrifice for once and for all.
But you deny that. You don't believe that. Instead you believe He has to be 'hung on a cross' each day to get 'more forgiveness' or to say 'reforgiven'.
Well I have some news for you - there is no more sacrifice for your sins.
It's funny how 1 John 1:9 so quickly smokes out those who hate God. If you love God, to admit you sinned is a relief, just as in the OT (i.e., Psalm 32:5,66:18). But if you secretly hate God, you'll refuse it.
We don't memorialize the Cross as in OT, bringing animals for sacrifice. But like they did, we still must name sins, as the video showed. Every OT page, has a verse warning that God disciplines the BELIEVER who refuses to admit he sinned.
Bet money on it: everyone who refuses to use 1John1:9 will, within a year, get sick or will claim to have lost his faith. I've seen that timeline over and over and over during the last 20+ years. WAKE UP and make the verse a habit.. or else.
It does not do us any good to confess our sin if we do not turn from it. That would be hypocrisy and not repentance. "Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour." -(Ecclesiastes 10:1)- If you want to throw a wall up between you and God, just start sinning a little. If you want to lose your salvation, confess, yet do not repent, but continue in your sins. You will be a cast-a-way.
TheLoneSparrow, you cannot turn from sin until a) you KNOW it's a sin, and b) you have enough WORD in you to COUNTER the desire for sin. That takes years, even decades.
God doesn't sin because of what He KNOWS. Christ didn't sin because of what He LEARNED. So if we too learn and live on Bible as He did, then sin for us will reduce and change over time. I gotta tell you, what tempted me 30 years ago doesn't tempt me at all today. My sins changed over time, as the Word built in me.
Most people know their sins almost immediately after doing wrong and usually before doing it. It is called a conscience. Men are born with one. "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" -(Romans 6:1-2)- The Lord Jesus Christ is not the minister of sin, but righteousness. "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:" -(Acts 17:30)-
True, TheLoneSparrow. That's why you need to name your sins to God when they occur, 1John1:9. Else you're in a carnal state, and any Bible in that state you imagine you learn, is only hot air. True for all of us.
So 1John1:9 is a lifeline. Spiritual apnea turned back into spiritual breathing. As time passes, one then can REALLY learn Bible, and as one does, the attraction of sin fades. One instead becomes more attracted to God's Word, precept on precept. :)
If our sins can be imputed after salvation then you can lose your salvation. We have to shed blood to have forgiveness of sins. If you hold to this teaching then you have to shed blood in order to be forgiven. God bless you for loving the word of God.
And you're wrong about messing with the Greek text. Catholics messed with the Vulgate, scribes sometimes made mistakes with the original-language NT (which was originally in Greek, which you can easily prove). You can prove where these problems are, and 1John 1:9 is NOT in dispute. Even if it were, there are hundreds of other verses teaching the same thing, especially the entire chapter of Leviticus.
I meant to add all this when replying to you last week, but didn't have the time until now.
The truth is out there for anyone who wants to check it out for themself. I already have. And am convinced you are wrong.
Dear everyone else,
Please go check it out for yourself. Because it is a well documented fact that 1 John 1:9 was indeed written in the Greek "aorist" tense and not the English "present" tense.
Just about YOUR YOUR YOUR faith, I just made a video showing 1John1:9 IN Greek and exegeted it for the world, being as you invited everyone to view it. Greek present tense is used, and English wasn't a language at the time. NO ONE MESSED WITH THE TEXT. As, the video will prove. Will post it sometime late tonight: it's in two parts.
That should prove interesting. It's been awhile since I looked it up myself. And you were right about the Greek word homologeo for "confess" being in the present active subjunctive tense. I however have been referring to the word aphiemi for "forgive". Which is in the second aorist active subjunctive tense. So please be sure to include that in your video(s). And so yes, we should keep on confessing our sins. But not for forgiveness nor right standing fellowship. But rather for growing in grace.
Well, the final format of the videos addressed the generic argument that the Catholics had altered the text (you can prove they didn't), and went through each of the words in the original Greek, very easy to exegete quickly. Total of three videos, about 8 minutes each. It may take awhile for Youtube to upload them.
I would guess you need life. Because you appear to still be spiritually dead in Adam. If you was alive in Christ, then I don't think you would be so religious, and so cold & condemning. I just thought I would point out to you the error in translation about this verse. It is well documented. And I didn't make it up. But like I said, you evidently don't seem to really care about the truth. And just like the Pharisees, would rather venerate your own religion, then the real truth of the scriptures.
I'm sorry "brainouty" but you're wrong. 1John 1:9 has been backwards for over 1600 years when the Catholic Church intentionally changed the translation of the original Greek text from its proper "aorist" tense into an improper and incorrect "present" tense. And 1200 years later (after the fact) the King James translators even knew as much. But the Protestant Church intentionally kept it wrong so as to retain by design the very selfsame legalistic mind control the Vatican had enjoyed before them.
Glad to see your video defending the right usage of 1Jn.1:9. I was stunned to hear people using the Atonement as an excuse not to confess their sins! John is speaking to believers, how they can have confidence and assurance in their salvation (1Jn.3:19)
They cannot understand 1Jn unless they understand what Paul was saying in Rom.6-7.
Good point, edward. I don't think I brought up Romans 6-7 in the video. I should have. Golly, we had daily exegesis of that, and yes it does explain the problem, Paul himself constantly admitting he was sinning post salvation, using the equivalent of 1Jn1:9 by the end of Chapter 7 (reflecting "if we judge ourselves" in 1Cor11 I believe).
Apparently the atonement misuse comes from treating Colossians 1:14 and Ephesians 1:7 as koine Greek. It's an Attic double accusative. In short, you CAN name your sins to God BECAUSE you are saved. Duh. Else millions of Jews bringing sin offerings in the OT were all wrong, lol!
I think that the theologicans are trying to be logical and denying what scripture says. They say, If all your sins are forgiven at the Cross, why confess them?
As you point out, they were covered by the Atonement once a year in the OT and you still had to make offerings for them to get back into fellowship. James 5 also speaks of praying for someone ill and his sins would be forgiven (Ja.5:15). Paul speaks of judging ourselves so we will not be judged (1Cor.11:31)
amoremorte85, "sin" is anything God wouldn't do. God wouldn't be afraid, feel guilty, lie, cheat, get irritated or angry. Here's what I do: I use 1Jn1:9 like breathing, even if I'm not SURE I sinned. Often I know what it is, and I just yell out, "DAD!" to Father, since He knows what sin I just sinned. So, see: 1Jn1:9 is easy to use. I do it even in my sleep.
NAMING the sin isn't this bureacratic process Christians make it out to be. You'll know when you screwed up. So just admit that, takes a nanosecond's THOUGHT to do. You don't have to say it out loud. The idea behind naming is to help you RECOGNIZE what kind of sin it is. But usually you'll be in a hurry. So you know what it was -- just admit it to Our Mutual Dad, and move on. I do that at least 1000 times a day, no big deal.
I was always under the impression that 1John was a letter addressing Gnosticism where they don`t believe in sin cause the body was worthless. Therefore you get John saying if we say we have no sin....but if we confess our sin (which is supposedly singular in original manuscript)not sins....the cleansing seems to be conditional upon confessing then which seems to contradict other scripture of us being righteous already because of Christ.just a thought.
1John is primarily on the mechanics of daily spiritual life. He does tweak the Gnostics, as do all the NT writers (most especially Paul), but that's really an aside. Mostly they use Gnostic keywords in witty ways. Paul's Ephesians, for example, tweaks Euripides' play, "Ion" to show God's SUPERIOR begetting. :)
I know you disagree, but try using 1Jn1:9 every time you even THINK you sinned, see what a difference it makes. You can prove this doctrine empirically.
ty for your quick response. i guess my concern is for believers to see themselves as forgiven & righteous through Christ which should change our behaviour supernaturally, as opposed to the condemnation that is widely spread through the church. When we understand the grace that has been poured out on us and how we do not deserve it, a response of obedience through love will take place.Grace & Peace brainouty
True, Third. Fellowship is quite another issue. When a Christian sins, he goes offline with the Spirit, and is "carnal" (English Bible term). To get back online with God, he needs to be filled with the Spirit (analogous to Spirit filling Temple, Greek term katharizw). Our inner 'temple' can be defiled, so we lose Filling. 1Jn1:9 restores it, that's why John uses the same keyword as in the OT for Temple filling, katharizw, in 1Jn1:9.
not true, embankmehtlb. Video provided verses proving that they were saved. David was saved. The entire congregation leaving in the Exodus were saved. You wouldn't even TAKE an animal for sacrifice UNLESS you already BELIEVED in YHWH. That's why you did it, because you wanted restoration to fellowship. Verses are plain about that, as is the shemah itself (a declaration of belief, which only a believer would make).
In the OT even though the Jews did confess their sins & offer sacrifice they were not saved. Only a very few people were actually saved before the resurrection of Jesus. Those were hand picked by God. Now after the cross all are saved who believe in Jesus regardless of their sin confessed or not.
Agreed, ChristoferL. But some people DON'T BELIEVE they have to name their sins. No spiritual life function absent 1Jn1:9 regularly used, since no Filling. Ergo the video detail (overkill?) neither you nor I would need -- but others would. And I apologize for the music. I don't know enough about copyright rules to know what I can use, so I cobble together old wav files, for now. :)

MrManowar3 9 months ago
@MrManowar3 Oh darling, you are always forgivable, due to 1John1:7. Just say 'Oh DAD, I sinned, and I don't remember!' Then ALL sins are cancelled, incuding those you didn't name, as end 1John1:9 says. 'ALL wrongdoing' (Greek adikia means the violations made by a judge, since you are Royal Family). Some translate that as 'unrighteousness', which is too fuzzy, but still gets the point across.
Use 1John1:9 like breathing whenever you think of it, and go in peace!
brainouty 9 months ago

@Bellarubia18 You bet! Well said!

Bellarubia18 11 months ago
@Bellarubia18 I'm grateful he made it clear to you. My pastor harped on 1John1:9 constantly while teaching, and I learned it from my mother (who never knew my pastor). SHE learned it in Baptist Sunday school during the 1940s. So this common-sense verse gives us God's Brains.
Why Christians routinely debate its need, is beyond me. Nearly everything is a sin! So just use 1John1:9 like breathing, and you get God's Brains, just like John himself admitted in that seciton (verses 1:5-10)!

You do not understand the new covenant. That is okay, but you are probably miserable. The new covenant is the Life of Christ. He came to die, then live in everyone that trust Him with their life. It is that simple.
Simpleman28173 1 year ago
@Simpleman28173 No, 1John1:9 is simply a continuance in New Covenant form of the same rule as always applied: a believer names his sins to God. Video showed the OT verses. Salvation and naming sins post-salvation are two carryovers from the OT. There are others. Everything got UPGRADED in Christ, aka 'the royal law' in James 1.
But you won't understand it. No one carnal can understand Bible.
brainouty 1 year ago
@brainouty It amazes me how people are hostile to using 1John1:9 and will twist Bible every which way, to avoid it. Should be a natural reflex to say when one is wrong. We are always admitting wrong to each other when we bump into each other or make a mistake. We see page after page of evidence in the OT and New, about admitting wrong, by believers.
Yet when it comes to the very obvious 'we' in 1John, John including himself -- all of a sudden 'we' won't do what he, David, Paul, Moses did. :)
brainouty 1 year ago
Couldn't watch past 3 mins...way too many things incorrect. You are obvious too smart for us dummies so I will not engage you in a discussion. Just simply look at vs 8 and 10 to get the context. 9 is not talking to believers but to gnostics that say there is no such thing as sin and that because of that they have never sinned. Either way it the verse has NOTHING to do with forgiveness as it is not mentioned in the text but is spoken of as ALL sins have been forg. Mark 3:28 except unbelief
promisedgrace 1 year ago
@promisedgrace Since you couldn't watch past 3 minutes, then the Holy Spirit is not in you. He is patient. No wonder, since you won't use 1 John 1:9. The tweaking of the gnostics is a secondary theme in the New Testament. But you can't read it, so good bye and good riddance.
Lots of idiots on Youtube.
brainouty 1 year ago
@promisedgrace The purpose of the Word of God is about GOD, not about the gnostics. The purpose of naming sins to GOD is to have fellowship with GOD -- has zippo to do with the gnostics. Daniel named his sins and the sins of Israel to God, Daniel 9; David did it, Psalm 32:5, 66:18. That's what the Levitical sacrifices were for, as the video showed in detail.
But you couldn't watch the video's Bible verses for 3 minutes. So you can't read the 'we' in 1John, where JOHN admits he names sins!
brainouty 1 year ago
@brainouty Personal attacks always show the inadequacy of ones position. You are citing quotes from the OT under the dispensation of law...we are under a new covenant (see Heb 8). If you want to be back under law then make sure and keep all 613 commandments in thought, word and deed. The law is meant to lead us to faith in Christ (Gal 3:24) and after that we are dead to the law (Rom 7:5).
If you would like some help with the scriptures I would be willing to lend a hand...God Bless
promisedgrace 1 year ago
@promisedgrace Your personal attack shows the inadequacy of your position. You started it. I but mirror your style.
You cannot read Bible, for you cannot read the word 'we' that John profusely uses. WE must name our sins to God. Not the gnostics, WE. Same rule, as in OT.
Gnostic tweaking is a rhetorical undercurrent in John, Peter, Paul. But The Message is about GOD, not gnosticism.
Which you cannot read, as your attention spans less than 3 min. So I end writing, to stay within that limit.

No such thing as a carnal christian.
brian9monty 2 years ago
brian9monty, you are a carnal christian.
We all have that problem from time to time.
brainouty 2 years ago
all sins are an act of will. I agree. but there are no carnal christians. You can be out of fellowship with unconfessed sin. You also can continue and not gain your inheritance
brian9monty 2 years ago
Bible's word 'carnal' (sarxz in Greek) means a believer who is in a state of sin unnamed to God, did you know that, brian9monty? So yes, Christians can be and usually are, carnal. That's why they read Bible so badly.
And yes, you can continue in carnality and not gain your inheritance. Saved yourself 1Cor3 -- but you don't inherit anything more.
brainouty 2 years ago
Wrong again!!! Carnal derives from the latin which means fleshly, worldly. A Christian is a follower of Christ. Not fleshly or worldly.
brian9monty 2 years ago
brian9monty, Greek Bible term sarxz means 'flesh', with sarkikos meaning 'fleshly'. And Christians are CALLED fleshly by Paul in Philippians 3:18-19, 2Tim2:26-3:7; and by James (passim in his letter).
So when sinning, Christians are carnal, it's a very common Bible term for believers, see how Paul uses it throughout Corinthians. Bye now.

brian9monty 2 years ago

brainouty 2 years ago
Im talking about living. One can behave carnally. But a person cannot live a Christian life as a carnal person. 1 cor 3 is talking about behavior not living lives day to day until death. People have mis-handled this word carnal to excuse continued sin. In Christ you follow(living). Christians dont live carnal. You cant follow and not follow. NO SUCH THING AS A CARNAL CHRISTIAN.
brian9monty 2 years ago
brian9monty, you are confusing your permanent status in Christ with your fellowship status day to day.
So ask Our Dad.
brainouty 2 years ago
once saved always saved is heresy. It is not taught in scripture although many ignore or misinterpret scripture to agree with their heresy. Its called a license to sin. We have many people in scripture who have lost salvation because of sin but this is ignored. This license has created another excuse to continue in sin. Many also going to hell. So sad!

Well you can't.
Bad teaching here.
ElProximo 2 years ago
El Proximo, the next thing you need after salvation is 1John1:9 or you are not filled with the Spirit. So you are carnal. God saved us on the Cross, but salvation of the SOUL'S THINKING is el proximo on the list. Finalmente, our bodies get saved, 1Cor15.
So it's not a teaching, it's the BIBLE, 1John1:6-10. And if you don't learn it prontito, el proximo for you will be la pena.
brainouty 2 years ago
Eh no.
ElProximo 2 years ago
ElProximo, because there is no more sacrifice for sins, WE MERELY NAME THEM, just like the OT people had to. You don't get that.
God will make it painfully clear to you that you must name your sins to God. Shaking the dust from you, good bye.
brainouty 2 years ago
It's funny how 1 John 1:9 so quickly smokes out those who hate God. If you love God, to admit you sinned is a relief, just as in the OT (i.e., Psalm 32:5,66:18). But if you secretly hate God, you'll refuse it.
We don't memorialize the Cross as in OT, bringing animals for sacrifice. But like they did, we still must name sins, as the video showed. Every OT page, has a verse warning that God disciplines the BELIEVER who refuses to admit he sinned.
So only those who hate God, refuse.
brainouty 2 years ago
Bet money on it: everyone who refuses to use 1John1:9 will, within a year, get sick or will claim to have lost his faith. I've seen that timeline over and over and over during the last 20+ years. WAKE UP and make the verse a habit.. or else.
brainouty 2 years ago
I certainly do confess my sins but this is acknowledging reality and then being very thankful that Jesus already resolved the sin issue,
and,
I haven't practiced your 'bar of soap' daily reforgiveness scheme for nearly 20 years and can pass for 10 years younger than my real age lol,
but,
Like I say - eventually, inevitably, like everyone else will get sick and die from something.
Then you can say 'AHA!'
Well... that is if you think you will outlive me?
Maybe.
Hey.. I hope you do!
ElProximo 2 years ago
So you think of Jesus death on the Cross as only being sufficient for sins up till the point of your conversion.
Then you have to be 'reforgiven' at the end of each day.
So really, by your understanding you minimize Christs atonement and make it only some sort of temporary measure.
ElProximo 2 years ago
It does not do us any good to confess our sin if we do not turn from it. That would be hypocrisy and not repentance. "Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour." -(Ecclesiastes 10:1)- If you want to throw a wall up between you and God, just start sinning a little. If you want to lose your salvation, confess, yet do not repent, but continue in your sins. You will be a cast-a-way.
TheLoneSparrow 2 years ago
TheLoneSparrow, you cannot turn from sin until a) you KNOW it's a sin, and b) you have enough WORD in you to COUNTER the desire for sin. That takes years, even decades.
God doesn't sin because of what He KNOWS. Christ didn't sin because of what He LEARNED. So if we too learn and live on Bible as He did, then sin for us will reduce and change over time. I gotta tell you, what tempted me 30 years ago doesn't tempt me at all today. My sins changed over time, as the Word built in me.
brainouty 2 years ago
Most people know their sins almost immediately after doing wrong and usually before doing it. It is called a conscience. Men are born with one. "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" -(Romans 6:1-2)- The Lord Jesus Christ is not the minister of sin, but righteousness. "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:" -(Acts 17:30)-
TheLoneSparrow 2 years ago
True, TheLoneSparrow. That's why you need to name your sins to God when they occur, 1John1:9. Else you're in a carnal state, and any Bible in that state you imagine you learn, is only hot air. True for all of us.
So 1John1:9 is a lifeline. Spiritual apnea turned back into spiritual breathing. As time passes, one then can REALLY learn Bible, and as one does, the attraction of sin fades. One instead becomes more attracted to God's Word, precept on precept. :)
brainouty 2 years ago

Dear brainouty,
The truth is out there for anyone who wants to check it out for themself. I already have. And am convinced you are wrong.
Dear everyone else,
Please go check it out for yourself. Because it is a well documented fact that 1 John 1:9 was indeed written in the Greek "aorist" tense and not the English "present" tense.
Thank you very much.
JustAboutMyFaith 2 years ago
Just about YOUR YOUR YOUR faith, I just made a video showing 1John1:9 IN Greek and exegeted it for the world, being as you invited everyone to view it. Greek present tense is used, and English wasn't a language at the time. NO ONE MESSED WITH THE TEXT. As, the video will prove. Will post it sometime late tonight: it's in two parts.
brainouty 2 years ago
That should prove interesting. It's been awhile since I looked it up myself. And you were right about the Greek word homologeo for "confess" being in the present active subjunctive tense. I however have been referring to the word aphiemi for "forgive". Which is in the second aorist active subjunctive tense. So please be sure to include that in your video(s). And so yes, we should keep on confessing our sins. But not for forgiveness nor right standing fellowship. But rather for growing in grace.
JustAboutMyFaith 2 years ago

JustAboutMyFaith 2 years ago 2
I'm sorry "brainouty" but you're wrong. 1John 1:9 has been backwards for over 1600 years when the Catholic Church intentionally changed the translation of the original Greek text from its proper "aorist" tense into an improper and incorrect "present" tense. And 1200 years later (after the fact) the King James translators even knew as much. But the Protestant Church intentionally kept it wrong so as to retain by design the very selfsame legalistic mind control the Vatican had enjoyed before them.
JustAboutMyFaith 2 years ago
Glad to see your video defending the right usage of 1Jn.1:9. I was stunned to hear people using the Atonement as an excuse not to confess their sins! John is speaking to believers, how they can have confidence and assurance in their salvation (1Jn.3:19)
They cannot understand 1Jn unless they understand what Paul was saying in Rom.6-7.
edwardpf123 3 years ago
Good point, edward. I don't think I brought up Romans 6-7 in the video. I should have. Golly, we had daily exegesis of that, and yes it does explain the problem, Paul himself constantly admitting he was sinning post salvation, using the equivalent of 1Jn1:9 by the end of Chapter 7 (reflecting "if we judge ourselves" in 1Cor11 I believe).
brainouty 3 years ago
Apparently the atonement misuse comes from treating Colossians 1:14 and Ephesians 1:7 as koine Greek. It's an Attic double accusative. In short, you CAN name your sins to God BECAUSE you are saved. Duh. Else millions of Jews bringing sin offerings in the OT were all wrong, lol!
brainouty 3 years ago
I think that the theologicans are trying to be logical and denying what scripture says. They say, If all your sins are forgiven at the Cross, why confess them?
As you point out, they were covered by the Atonement once a year in the OT and you still had to make offerings for them to get back into fellowship. James 5 also speaks of praying for someone ill and his sins would be forgiven (Ja.5:15). Paul speaks of judging ourselves so we will not be judged (1Cor.11:31)
Search the scriptures!

What is a sin? And which ones would need to be named?
amoremorte85 3 years ago
amoremorte85, "sin" is anything God wouldn't do. I do it even in my sleep.
brainouty 3 years ago
NAMING the sin isn't this bureacratic process Christians make it out to be. You'll know when you screwed up. So just admit that, takes a nanosecond's THOUGHT to do. You don't have to say it out loud. The idea behind naming is to help you RECOGNIZE what kind of sin it is. But usually you'll be in a hurry. So you know what it was -- just admit it to Our Mutual Dad, and move on. I do that at least 1000 times a day, no big deal.
brainouty 3 years ago
I was always under the impression that 1John was a letter addressing Gnosticism where they don`t believe in sin cause the body was worthless. Therefore you get John saying if we say we have no sin....but if we confess our sin (which is supposedly singular in original manuscript)not sins....the cleansing seems to be conditional upon confessing then which seems to contradict other scripture of us being righteous already because of Christ.just a thought.
ThirdProverb 3 years ago 2
1John is primarily on the mechanics of daily spiritual life. He does tweak the Gnostics, as do all the NT writers (most especially Paul), but that's really an aside. Mostly they use Gnostic keywords in witty ways. Paul's Ephesians, for example, tweaks Euripides' play, "Ion" to show God's SUPERIOR begetting. :)
I know you disagree, but try using 1Jn1:9 every time you even THINK you sinned, see what a difference it makes. You can prove this doctrine empirically.
brainouty 3 years ago
ty for your quick response. i guess my concern is for believers to see themselves as forgiven & righteous through Christ which should change our behaviour supernaturally, as opposed to the condemnation that is widely spread through the church. When we understand the grace that has been poured out on us and how we do not deserve it, a response of obedience through love will take place.Grace & Peace brainouty
ThirdProverb 3 years ago

Verses are plain about that, as is the shemah itself (a declaration of belief, which only a believer would make).
brainouty 3 years ago
In the OT even though the Jews did confess their sins & offer sacrifice they were not saved. Only a very few people were actually saved before the resurrection of Jesus. Those were hand picked by God. Now after the cross all are saved who believe in Jesus regardless of their sin confessed or not.
