After Hendrix (or maybe same level, Hoodoo Man), Jimmy Page, possibly, Johnny Winter, surely, the best blues guitarist of the modern times. Amazing deepness with his strings
rory is amazing. his playing is just so beautiful and influential, he proves you dont need to be a yngwie malmsteen or paul gilbert to be amazing. his playing is better than anything iv ever heard!!
There's a lot of great guiarists in this world. I like Page, Rhoads, Harrison, Hendrix and so on, but Rory Gallagher is my hero. He was my dads hero too. There was just something really special with this guy, mysterious and he had the feeling of his guitar like noone else.
@GvrnmntHkr Totally agree mate, I love Blackmore, SRV etc but there's just something magical about Rory. I think his lovely personality has something to do with it, he makes me smile :)
i like clapton but i thnk rory is so much better . claptons abit of a follower (kind of plays wat bb tells him to ) where as rory had his own thing his own sound and style
The first time I saw Rory he was introduced as the #1 guitarest in the world and before he came out i thought of clapton, page robin trower and then,Rory comes out looking so cute, played inbetween kiss and rod stewart,he started playing I think this song, blew my mind. His guitar playing is so above anyone, hes in a genre all his own.Saw him again, blew me away shortly after that saw clapton who was good, but NOONE comes close to Rory, the voice, love his individual style,a fan pleaser RORY RULES
For a change i think everyone has a good point to be made they all were and are rok gods when it comes to the guitar and singing for the most of them, but Rory was just plain old rory and if you were to hear Gary Moore talking about his last days before the operation it would sadden you he passed away a lonely man
None of them could touch Rory because he always remained "one of us" - a music fan. It's no coincidence that most of his most famous footage comes from gigs where he was literally face to face with his audience without having to walk a mile to be there. That's how he liked it - intimate! He never became a rock and blues God - not by choice anyway. He was just plain old Rory Gallagher and as long as he was playing and there was one or more individuals in the house, he'd carry on. Pure genius.
Gallagher, Hendrix, Clapton, Page, D. Allman, Townshend, Santana, J.Beck, SRV, Buchannon, P.Green, D. Dale, Cropper, B.Guy, A.King, A.Collins, B. May, the Edge, Slash, D.Gilmour, G. Harrison
anyone of these guys is numbero uno, too hard to pick number one of all time!!!!
Why wud yu put Page in the sentence doesn't hold a candle to Rory for that matter Hendrix has always bin my legend but after hearin Rory i have found someone else that is a giant when it comes to guitar ,excellent voice to go with it
@dictator54 jimi hendrix was asked in an interview what it was liked to be known as the greatest guitarist in the world..His answer was.."I dont know man,you should ask an irish cat called Rory Gallagher"
@NeedleInTheGroove1 The thing was Hendrix was so messed up on drugs, he was referring to a literal cat. The cat would appear in his hallucinations and play really great guitar. Later he called him Rory Gallagher and said he was from Ireland, but that was just a huge coincidence.
@rkl17 Yeah I know, but I also didn't meen dat he was smarter in a guitar playing way. I only meant that he was smarter in the fact that he better knew how to make money with his music and how to reach a bigger audience. And indeed, when you look to skills, Rory ane especialy SRV where two of the most talented musicians this music ever had the privilege to meet

I find it quit stupid comparing 2 of the best guitarist and saying that the one is better and more passionate than the other. The only thing that you can say is that Clapton probably was smarter and that he just knew how to make music that everybody can apreciate, just like Marc Knopfler. About skills and passion: the beautiful thing about this kind of music is that it only sound great when you play it with passion, so Clapton, Rory, Marc, Ford,... They all are passionate, always
@NicolasHeyrman i agree with your statement which implicitly reminds all that music is subjective, and is not a directly measureable contest(Thank goodness). But Clapton was certainly not smarter than Rory. Clapton is very good, but his knowledge of the fretboard, alternate tunings, key and timing changes, originality, slide ability, and demonstrative showmanship...... all pale next to Rory, and also next to SRV - and Clapton has acknowledged this fact. Bottom line = they are all great ones.

@avocate201 come on man,, whats the need to bring that up?? why do people always compare to clapton?? because its Clapton!! joe walsh is my fav guitarist but even i know the importance of clapton and his playing. Clapton is in class of his own.
@avocate201 is there really somebody out there comparing them?? LOL poor Eric.. He is a good guitar man but he gets out distroyed by every direct confrontation... With Rory Jimy or Stevie :)
Hendrix was once asked ( an Tv or Newspaper Journalist i think was it ) how it Feels to be the Best Gutarplayer in the World , Hendrix said , he dont know how that feels, " you have to go and ask Rory Gallagher," he answered .
Gallagher, the only one who poured his heart and soul into his performances, spent his body in the act of giving so much to so many, will I ever forget, hell no. I was fortunate son. RIP. You are sorely missed.
I know this is lame and cliche, but seriously there are 5 people who actually disliked this? SERIOUSLY? are the like and dislike buttons that close together that 5 people could miss one of them?
The complete package, a great vocalist and a lightning fast blues/rock player. Talk about playing guitar just like ringing a bell! RIP Rory. You went too soon.
Clapton had devinitiv more Luck and, whats more Important , Clapton wanted to be Comercial he did everything for beeing in the Radio or Television. Rory was complete different, , he wanted to play Music for the People . Clapton for me ie one of the most overrated Guitarplayers, Rory was so much better.
Gallagher, as you'll quickly discover if you ask about, is the guitarist's guitarist. Not the greatest singer - he played so much n drank so hard he often sounded rough - nor the greatest songwriter - he was more an interpreter, not that he didn't write great stuff too - but above all, he was a unique interpreter whose frequently jazzy take on old blues standards, was without compare. If you ever saw him, you'd never forget him.
Agree about Clapton. I mean, come on, how many solos did he play which sent chills down your spine. IMO, he was a bearded junkie with a f*ckin good agent
Hendrix was amazing, but he practised for millions of hours. Rory was born with his talent
don't whine about clapton and that he had sould out, if you don't like his newer stuff (as my self) just don't listen to it, i love cream, derek and dominos, i also love rory's music, and i'd die to see them playing together, so don't bitch about it and just enjoy your music
That "commercial shit" is important. In those days, you needed a couple of hit records. Probably still do. Without them, you end up with a strong following and a good living, but no one remembers you, if that is important to you. Roy Buchanan had the same fate.
Saw three of his monumental gigs, met him once at heathrow where he posed for a photo and gave us an autograph. Very shy, modest man for such a great talent.
i saw him loads, every UK tour at least once. The man was brilliant. Paid for my Guiness in a pub in Birmingham before a gig at Aston Uni. Played a complete acoustic gig at Birmingham Town Hall when the band couldn't get there because of fog and THEN came back the following week and did the usual electric sets. For the same ticket!!!
@RossGAnderson Yeh, Rory was never one to miss, love your story, it tells you everything you need to know about the man. What sort of 'stars' do that today!
i saw him loads, every UK tour at least once. The man was brilliant. Paid for my Guiness in a pub in Birmingham before a gig at Aston Uni. Good god, I thought the Irish Tour was his best gig. This and Cradle Rock from the same Montreux gig proves me totally wrong... this is the best guitar playing I've ever heard!
@HawkwindMaster :D Something else, isn't it. The band have to go flat out to try n keep up with him n he's still leppin' around the place at the end. I've played this version of shin kicker on youtube more often than any other song by any artist.
This guy should have been more famous than Eric Clapton..His playing was far better but he refused to make some commercial shit for fuckin' promotors or Top " myass" bosses, Now nobody is buy CD's anymore because people are raging about the shit quality it generated for decade. Then fuck'em all!
We love Rory and underrated musicians like him. He was definitevly not granted the talent he deserved. This guy should have been a star from day 1
YES! This is why I hate fucking Clapton. People think i'm crazy but I know what he stole from Rory. Clapton sold out man, he was already famous and he sold out. Taste was not as famous as Cream or the Yardbirds, Rory never sold out and was the best, do you know how rare that is? Most people have probably never even heard of Rory Gallagher... At least in America.
I hate Clapton, too...I think that Clapton has 1/3 of Rory's talent and capabilities. By the way, I'm brazilian and I traveled to Ireland just to pay my honors to him !
@laurentdelyon Oh for god sake it is people like you that give awesome musicians a bad name all about fucking competition yes he is a fantastic artisit who deserves a place in musical history as he has, maybe not as large as some out there but don't start ragging on other artists, eric clapton is good in his own right also. Learn to appriciate something without making it a competition. God you speak like a freaking schoolchild grow up (and yes I realise the futility of saying this)

i saw him loads, every UK tour at least once.

One of my great and ever lasting joys in life has been the fact that I got to see Rory in concert !
I've seen a lot of concerts and there was nobody better and no one who enjoyed playing for the people more than him.
Thanks for sharing this.

RIP Master.

Good god, I thought the Irish Tour was his best gig. This and Cradle Rock from the same Montreux gig proves me totally wrong... this is the best guitar playing I've ever heard!

@HawkwindMaster Take a look at shin kicker montreux 1979 - chainsaw punk chords meet acid rock. It'll take your face off!

Sir, I am afraid I will now have to sue you for injuries arising from your recommendation, as my face has been melted clean off!

@HawkwindMaster :D Something else, isn't it. The band have to go flat out to try n keep up with him n he's still leppin' around the place at the end. I've played this version of shin kicker on youtube more often than any other song by any artist.

One of the best, I love this song. I was fortunate to see him live twice, gone too soon RIP.

@laurentdelyon Rory and Eric are my favourite guitarists...iI can't dream to put them in comparison because thanks to heaven they are so different!

@laurentdelyon
MSTFreak 11 months ago
@MSTFreak
