This original version from 1984 is more soft and slow than the commercial better known version of 1988, when Chris Rea made an album *New Light Through Old Windows* with refreshed versions of his hits till then. Anyway (the 2 versions of) the song are for me one of the best Christmas Songs ever!!

I heard this song a few years back on Christmas night.

We drove hundreds of km to France to take the Eurotunnel to the UK. When we arrived at Calais, we found out that mum had forgotten her ID; we were not allowed to board. So we had to drive all the way back to fetch it.

On those deserted highways, driving back home through Christmas night, I listened to this song on the radio. And every time I hear this song again, I remember that night.

I am not of the Christian faith. I heard this song in the shopping mall and decided to find out who sings this song - it is fabulous. Chris Rea's slightly rasppy voice is beautiful. There is something in music that appeals, almost, to all people - it unites humanity.
