IF i ever was to try/do drugs, i think i'd go for LSD in a controlled calm enviroment and use it as a tool for self reflection and consciousness expansion. Possibly another slightly softer entheogen first.
Even if you never try drugs, reading up on them is good to have a better understanding of them, what they do to people, and if/why the government is wrong to outright ban them.

Smoking cannabis, which I'm inferring your talking about since eating cannabis is obviously dangerous and I'm sure you've heard doctors advocate against it, is just as bad as smoking tobacco except the combustion products of cannabis and the generic particles in the air usually doesn't contain any carcinogenic materials(a.k.a. known cancer causing materials). But tobacco and cannabis alike can lead to death by lung failure.

The question, rather, is do properties actually come from the psychoactive materials? Is it any worse than other legal products? You can look, but I think you will have a hard time finding evidence for that. It certainly is less carcinogenic than tobacco, which can cause cancer in any form chewed smoked whatever; at the absolute worst, you could just eat the weed.
