  • Alot of people dont know that in the movie The Five Heartbeats the part Flash was protraying the life of Ollie people didnt know

  • All the lead singers for the Temps were awesome . God broke the mold when he made Ollie.

  • Ollie Woodson was the Greatest. I love the way he sings high/low so damn good. RIP--so sad throat cancer robbed him of many years of bringing us more of his wonderful voice,

  • OMG. Love Ollie Woodson. Greatest lead singer (in my opinion) of the Temps. Sorry Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards.

  • all of the guys were good and they seemed to be there at the right time. The temps are the voices and you know... the voice are needed.

  • love this!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think that to compare David and Ali is not a fair comparison, and yet they both brought the same qualities as lead of the fabled emporers of soul. I think Ali could do all of David's leads but he also has the range that is just crazy good. David was first and Ali was the .1 of the tempts!

  • I came late in appreciation of Mr. Woodson's voice this year. I noticed that all of the songs with him singing lead particularly touched my heart. His voice so enhanced the Temptation's music it was so rich, soulful and unforgrtable.. I hate I missed his live performances. A voice like no other. God bless him.

  • Don Cornelius and The Soul Train Gang got Ali and The Tempts lip-syncing. Tragic.......

  • this was good lol

  • do we have to always rank greatness. Ali was great david ruf was great dennis was great. we have had 50 years of amazing music they do not need comparision rip broth job well done.

  • @lorcaliph514, I so agree with each. Each of the Temps had a voice that distinguished them from each other. We shouldn't be trying to take away from one, they were all GREAT singers and are truly missed.

  • @lorcaliph514, ooops, I so agree with YOU, lol.

  • WHAT A VOICE! RIP OLLIE WE'LL MISS YOU.

  • I miss you Ali you are SPECIAL. PK

  • Ali got it with that scratchy voice

  • thats fiddle!!!!

  • Denise Edwards play second fidel to no one!!!!!

  • These young so-called 'artists' today need to pay attention & learn what true "talent & showmanship" on stage is. The Temptations, like the O'Jays & a few others always "Backed Their Wax!" They always sound just as good Live as they do on their recordings. Very Few entertainers can stake this claim!! :-) Half of these young ones can't sing worth a damn. It's all studio computer generated synthetics!

  • I saw the Temptations on many tours and all their lead singer and I think Ollie Woodson was the best lead singer they ever had. Better singer and performer than any of the others: Ruffin, Kendricks, or Edwards. And he wrote great songs too!

  • Rest in Peace Ail!!!

  • he likes opening the door putting a little hanky on the floor

  • Yeahhhhh...

  • Here we go, first there will never be another David for the Temptations, but Aii is real close, he if you break it down to voice and stage presence, it is an interesting comparison, but this is strange if you put glasses on Ali, he looks like Ruffin.

  • The best Temptation lead , bar none. This is coming from a die hard Temptation fan from the sixties.

  • AO like every Temptation...forever...just as great as David, Eddie, Ricky, Richard, Paul, Elbridge,Otis, Damon, Ron, Bo, Glenn, Ray, Theo, Dennis, Louis.

  • @desireelise Can't forget Melvin! (I know you didn't)

  • ollie woodson....richard street...otis williams...melvin frankin..ron typson...autobots...TRANSFORM!!...and im sick of tired hearing that BOYZ TO MEN are the best r&b group off all time..no they are not..its the temptations..hell BTM cant even get on the beatles level let alone the rolling stones or the who...says uzipolo king of decatur

  • touch me babay--they sung that at appollo that was a true performance as well

  • This song has aged well. Still sounds fresh. This was Ollie at the top of his game. Why wasn't this a hit?

  • @emmettk i agree with that he is my 3rd favorite best temptations he was a powerhouse performer put the temps back on the map ..many people (young) would not know of the temps after treat her like a lady came out or if they watch that cartoon of a movie but he was the truth--says uzipolo king of decatur

  • The range in A.O.'s SMOOOOOOOOTHNESS was never ending. May you rest in peace. Temptations Forever !!!

  • HaHa!! The man gave the Temptations just what they needed and that was a lead singer with soooo much soul. Can you feel it! check him out. RIP my brother.

  • This song is awesome, RIP Mr. Woodson, your voice just makes my day, very talented , your music will forever be played by me I know for sure, this is music.

  • LOVE this song. Sooooo Soulful

  • If this Soul Train performance was in 1989/1990, I was 20 years old & too young & dumb to appreciate the history I was witnessing. Today I'm 41 & love these brothers to death!!! I'm so glad I'm now mature enough to appreciate them & the tremendous contribution to music they made. RIP Paul, David, Eddie, Blue, Ali & all the brothers (who passed away) who were down with one of the greatest groups of all time: The Temptations!

  • You will be forever missed Ali "Ollie" Woodason.......Rest In Peace.......I will always and forever love you

  • I like this song. How'd I miss this one?

  • YES ALI WOODSONS' VOCAL RANGE IS THE CLOSEST TO MARVIN GAYE......HE HAS A WIDE RANGE OF VOCALS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM!!!........AND THIS WAS HIS FROM HIS LAST ALBUM......SIMPLY HE WAS THE LAST GREATEST REAL SOUL SINGER!....THAT COULD STILL SING TIL HIS END...

  • Ollie Woodson R.I.P you were a very spacial brother, thanks God for internet your music will live on for your friends and family to enjoy for years to come.

  • Wow. His voice was so unique.

  • Someone asked where they could find this song earlier. I too went searching for it and could not find it until a couple of weeks ago. It is on a collection of 5 cd's called Emperors of Soul. I found it on Amazon. It's a great collection because it starts with some of their earlier songs like "Mother of Mine that I'd never heard except for in the movie, but yes it can be found. Hope this helps.

  • @untamed53

yes thank you so much for this info, i really appreciate it. i will certainly check that out. "Oh Mother Of Mine", song i love that song too. but i had found that song on BearShare myself.

  • ive been looking for this song since ive heard it. i can't find it anywhere but here. got to come on youtube just to listen to it.does anyone know where else i could find this song. Also there was a technical clitch on the BET Awards that made them not a show a tribute to Mr. Ollie along with others that died like Teddy Pedergrass, and L. Horne, and the isley brothers, and among others.it was suppose be when Todd Bridges was up there talking about Gary Coleman, but thats all we seen.

  • Dang that's what I get for not looking at the news or listen to radio. I didnt know he passed away, I do have a GREAT photo of Ali and myself at a club in LA January1985. R.I.P. ALI WOODSON I LOVE YOU STILL !

  • Ali Woodson is definitely not David Ruffin; he is better than David Ruffin ever was; the smoothness and mellowness in his voice, the love in his soul; nothing you could ever accuse David Ruffin of.

  • @Untameddn1935 Well said!

  • @Untameddn1935 I agree Untamed. The man stood alone on stage with the rest of them. Awesome talent

  • @Untameddn1935 You ain't NE'VA LIED!! Ali Woodson was da MAN!! That man's voice just made you wanna do thangs!! Hubby could get just about anything he wanted when he played the Temps with Woodson on lead!! Whoohoo!! :-)

  • @Untameddn1935

Mr.David Ruffin sang with a deep soulful passion that seemed to stem from two things,GOD given and Hard Livin. There aren't too many singers that brought and are bringing to the table what Mr.Ruffin provided us with.

  • Ollie rest in peace . A great temptation singer. You will be missed

  • One of the greatest.

  • R.I.P. OLLIE! Love ya

  • I have the honor of talking to him after a show at Blues Alley in D.C.; that Brother vocal is amazing. Every time he came any where near D.C. I would see him. R.I.P. Ollie, God called home His a Singing Angel.

    Peace,

    Larry D. Bridges

    D.C.

  • RIP Ali Woodson!!! You are up there with your fellow Temptation brothers David, Paul, Eddie, and Melvin

  • @BruhMan09 you made me cry:( I love these guys.

  • @ladywithabrain12

I understand ladywithabrain12 (Like that name), Ali was amazing it's a shame he is no longer here but I know he is in a better place some of the other tempts that have passed over the years

  • SMOOVE, early eve or L8NYTE.

  • Damn! This is how you treat 'em.....simply Special!

  • Wow. I remember this episode of Soul Train. R.I.P. Ali Ollie.

  • Patricia ATL

We are going to miss your smiling face, rest in peace..

  • @NYCBabii92 - Edwina Starr - Ct. I met Ali (Ollie) back when he had taken the the vocal place of Teddy Pendagrass with the Blue Notes. He had just left he Drifters. Then he moved to Atlanta and he and I (Edwina Starr) would open at some of the local clubs such as 200 South and Lamar's Regal Room and the Silver Fox (back then) then he he went to the Temptations. After he joined the Temps, I caught them a few times in concert and he always would have them call me up for My girl RIP

  • @fersnerkl8 Did you mean Edwin Starr?

  • Ali may he rest in peace..

  • Ali Woodson was a very special...we will miss you.

  • Special Ali that's what you where may you Rest in Peace.

  • R.I.P

  • R.I.P. Ali Ollie Woodson, September 12, 195 - May 30, 2010. Thanks for stopping by and blessing us with your music. We're Gonna Miss You Ollie!

  • RIP Ali

  • He will be missed !

  • Ali , what a voice, easy listening and was a special fit with Otis and the Temps.

  • Say what you want this is a bad man!!!!!!

  • I like him too. He is one the great leaders of the temptations also. He did very well. Why was his run so short lived?

  • @mashallw

Because of his own ego. Just like every other main lead-singer (Edwards/Ruffin) he decided to party all night long and skip rehearsals. I guess the group saw the signs and knew the same thing was coming, and cut him loose (twice). Nonetheless, i really love Woodson as a lead.

  • i like the group

  • Lets remember what the 60's -70's were like ..average blacks were not opertuned to write ; produce ;promote ;;legal matters ;;and advertise individually in the music business;;;Motown elected to do all that;; looks bad today but necessary then ;;protected some artist from being danger to their own self too;;;

  • @w51hylton since we are on the tenna marie martini...In 1982, Marie got into a heated legal battle with Motown records over her contract and disagreements on releasing her new material.[10] The shuffle resulted in "The Brockert Initiative", which makes it illegal for a record company to keep an artist under contract without releasing new material for that artist. The artist would then be able to sign and release with another label instead of being held back by an unsupportive one.

  • DO THE SONGS, let them shucckle and jive because this is BUSINESS and he wanted MONEY but creatively he would not let the artist shine if he had it his way and great songs would have never surfaced if left up to berry i mean the man had a great vision to go up against the big record industry execs/labels/medi the way he did and come out the winner took balls i am not conding that but damn berry(lol) goddamn belive in you artist alittle more says uzipolo king of decatur

  • @uzipolo the movie was false satrting with..where they filmed it at

  • but the thing is just because they wanted it THEY WAY does that make it right and does that short cahnge the artist.. MY PERFECT example is how they tried to drop little stevei when he got older because.. his voice was changing..his voice was changing..welp along comes the mid 70's and the songs of the key of life was made and he won a grammy for it, i got manay examples of the dirty motown work and how he didnt belive in his artist THATS THE BOTTOM LINE he didnt belived.. oh yeah HE LET THEM

  • No, Stevie recorded two albums independently and used that to negotiate his deal with motown. Motown didnt want him to have all of that control it had nothing to do with his voice. And as for The Tempts and Tops and Supremes , they were having hit after hit, it would be stupid and idiotic to just start writing for yourself for the sake of writing

  • its not that they didnt believe in them, but Motown already had song writers, they had everything set up already. Those other 3 songs are arguably better than Isnt The Night Fantastic

  • i know they were better but the point is why did they put it out 3 times and why they didnt give them more creative control thats all im saying i mean it seems like motown didnt belive in them or they thought they were musically dumb andi dont buy the fact they already had things set up(but hen again after seing caddilac recrds, you are right lol) the more i think about it paul seems my favorite temption and the movie was sooo false ban it now-says uzipolo-king of decatur

  • Thats just the way it was at motown. Otis himself said that Motown already had everything set up. Even the dancing remember Paul Williams was the Tempts only choreographer, but then Motown made Cholly Atkins the official choreographer, motown wanted things done their way, even though Paul was still creating dance moves for the Tempts, Cholly Atkins was creating dance moves for The Tempts as well, whatever motown said, thats how it went.

  • it has nothing to do with believing in them, if you look at the 4 tops and supremes, it was the same thing with them, motown assigned songwriters to write for them, it has nothing to do with thinking one is dumb. Motown wanted things done their way. Just know if Ali was singing with them back in the 60's, he wouldn't have been writing any songs either.

  • Perfect example, just look at the Andantes they were used for all of the 4 tops songs while they were on motown, but the tops didnt need them, but holland-dozier-holland wanted them on the background with the 4 Tops. Whatever Motown said or whatever the songwriter or producer said, that is how it went. They were the bosses.

  • agreed i guess you can look at it like that but motown didnt CHUMP ALL the artist like that they sure as hell didnt tell rick james what to do(well mambe image wise because they wanted THIER OWN punk/funk/white sounding band) nor did they tell smokey or stevie(who kept threating to goto court) so i guess its who they can control and who was real and belived in themselves was the outcome of who they could push around

  • Rick James was a songwriter on Motown first. WHen he did start singing for the label that was in the late 70's and 80's. I am talking about the 60's to the mid 70's. It has nothing to do with being pushed around. Smokey was Berry's right hand man and Stevie was a blind prodigy who was playing instruments and writing songs as well. Say what you want, but no one was being pushed around. if you are having success with songwriters you dont change it, its that simple.

  • and if you think motown ripped peopl off that was seasme street compared to how TSOP and chess and stax and all the other did the artist its a shame

  • Everyone got ripped off. Thats how it was back in the days

  • ok i got to go(lol) i can talk about my temps all day but unfortunatly they need to be on UNSUNG surely if they put teena marie on there which i thought was a insult and a embarssment then clearly they can put the temps on there because they are washed up

  • You probably wont see them on unsung being that there was a movie made about them

  • Obviously you have an absolute WRONG impression concerning the purpose for the Unsung program, as Aretha Franklin & Babyface were on Unsung & there is absolutely NOTHING "washed up" about them .. nor Smokey Robinson, Mary J. Blige, etc.. & "Why" would you think Teena Marie was an insult. After all, blacks loved gurlfriend & she was promoted by none other then the fabulous Rick James! Teena can still sing her azz off! You must be a youngster if you think Teena Marie is an embarassment ..

  • @San47di im 40 and seen ALL those artist you named 2 if not 3,4 times here in ATL but what i mean by an INSULT is that its too soon for here to be on there i mean they could have waited another 10 years thats what i meant i know teena is not washed up but ACCORDI\G to unsung you ARE if they put you on the show and its not a GREAT show at that the BEST one they had was Debarge because it was WAY MORE INDEPTH and talked about ALL of them instead of showcasing just one says uzipolo king of decatur

  • @uzipolo Again, I repeat, you have an absolute WRONG impression of the Show Unsung!! Mary J Blige right now is the BEST female R & B female out there! Babyface is writing the BEST music of his career! Keep watching .. you'll see Sada on there next, & she has the Number 1 hit in the country right now! Teena Marie's been out there for over 30 years & deserves to be featured just like all the other TOP artists of our day .. but then at 40 I can see why you wouldn't understand that.

  • @San47di UPDATE..well well they are doing another season of UNSUNG and look what i see..Stacey Latisaw..Stacey Latisaw?? are you kidding me, welp this some of my argument right there see the problem is they put her, teena marie, bootsy(i dont know WHY bootsy he is still making millions) thye put them on TOO SOON thats why i saw if they put these artist on they might as well put the Temps or Whitney houston i wonder who will be next??EWF??Kashif??

  • Eddie and Paul were great too, so were Otis and Melvin

  • So was the camera man and the sound technician,oh and the lighting man,the audience were great too.

  • I'm actually being serious, genius. They were all great singers, if someone thinks only Ruffin was great they dont know about the Temptations are extremely clueless. The Tempts had 5 great lead singers in 1 group, but keep watching the movie I'm sure its 100% factual.LOL

  • Eddie Kendricks did have a much better solo career than all of The Tempts combined. I guess you never listened to their albums or heard Otis or Melvin sing. Paul sang My Girl, and he did a good job. It sounds like you only watched the movie

  • So Eddie Kendricks wasnt great, the same Eddie Kendricks who sang lead on 5 number 1 singles for The Temptations including their biggest selling single in Just My Imagination. There are tons of genius' on youtube I see

  • hey it was a joke, eddie kendrix was brill.

  • i never said he wasnt great in the first place?

  • no doubt

  • @tuzwol if you want the pond for pound all around LEAD SINGER for the temps NO ONE will or ever come close to ollie who wrote produced and aranged their songs and the second best is paul williams who was the meant and potatoes of the group and thier best chrogher they had in over 50 years-says uzipolo king of decatur

  • Thats your opinion,David and Eddie and Paul and Dennis,Melvin,Otis sang on the songs that made them famous around the world. Eddie Kendricks would arrange and write also,so did Otis and Melvin.

  • that might be true but motown downplayed them in thier writting capabilities and didnt give them the creative output they deserve a perfect example of this is the song isnt the night fantastic9which was on 3 b-sides 45 fives which i thought was weird) and the fact is they tried to push that song but berry didnt belive thier musical writting talent but when ollie came along he was ALREADY a over the top seasoned profession..

  • Berry wanted things his way, just like The Tempts Do The Tempts album wasnt promoted that much because the Tempts wrote their own material, so therefore it wasnt promoted like it should've been, motown wanted things done there way. Say what you want, but the Tempts can write some great songs. The Tempts have alot of B-sides that arguably should've been A -sides. The Tempts B-sides,were A-side quality. It slike The Tempts had 2 A-sides

  • And as far as the song writing, the Tempts had more control in the 80's and 90's and up until today than they did in the 60's and 70's. if Ali was singing with them back in the 60's and 70's he wouldnt have been writing either. Just for the record Eddie did write The Girls Alright With Me along with Norman Whitfield and Eddie Holland, which probably should've been the A-Side instead of the B-Side, but the great thing with The Tempts was that the B-Sides and album fillers were fire also

  • lol dont go there with the temps now...i dont know about these other you tibers but i do this everyday the tempts are my favorite male singing group everyone tried to copy cat them but as far as paul anybody WHO KNOWS music KNOWS paul williams was the truth he was thier bread and butter and was thier meat and potatoes of the group and he didnt need gimmicks or crazy marketing strageties to pull it off-says uzipolo-king of decatur

  • They all wrote, Eddie was writing and producing when he went solo, Eddie was going platinum in the 70's, singing on 3 or 4 songs that went to number 1 as a solo artist

  • Otis Williams did write "Treat Her Like A Lady" with Ali, Otis and Melvin wrote "Error of Our Ways" and Otis wrote "You Necesassary In My Life".Otis and Ron wrote "My Love Is True." Ron Tyson wrote Think For Yourself and In a Lifetime. They could write songs, but like I said motown wanted things done there way

  • Dont go there with me on The Tempts,LOL, I probably know more about them than you do.LOL

  • i met ollie woodson!!! he cam to my school a couple days ago with jackee harry, telma hopkins, and christopher williams!! i hugged him! lol omg, it was amazing!

  • Very good song...I'm a youngster, so I didn't get the Temptations during the 60's 70's. When this came out, i really enjoyed it. It seem like radio back then didn't heavily segregate the music. The music is divided into old versus young which is making the younger generation completely ignorant to good music. Thank you for posting this song.

  • The best thing about this video is Richard wearing that wig....lolol He was losing his hair early on, and was wearing an Afro wig in the late 70's-early 80's, but by 1989 Afros were out. So he's up there on stage with a straight wig. He still wears one to this day when he performs with his version of The Tempts. At least the one he had on in this video looked better. The one he wears these days looks like something a sista would've worn in the 60's,,,,lol But hey, he's still my boy

  • Oh yeah folks ... This is music. Marvelous talented Ali Ollie Woodson who hails from the Big D (Detroit, that is) ... doing his thang. Love the lineup, too: Melvin, Richard, Otis, Ron and, of course, Ollie. Mr. Woodson still doing his thang these days. Check out Dennis Edwards' Temptations Revue featuring Ali OIlie Woodson. You will not be disappointed.

  • u are right woodson is no ruffin, he stands on his own, David Dennis, woodson, all contributed to this great group, what other group had great lead singers like the tempts? the impressions, and the drifters, but you only hear all this stuff who was the best, the other lineups had to be good, and it is good they had their own sound except for Damon, lets give louis price, G..C Cameron, Mr. Peoples who followed R.Street and Bo Henderson some love, all these dudes can sing!

  • The guy that singing lead, is Ali Woodson.

  • I love this man! 'Nuff said!!!

  • Great balance of earthy , raspy voice and falsetto....Temptations Forever.

  • not that music today is fake but this is what i call real music! this song take me back and i'm loving it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i like the originals batter eddie, paul, david, melvin, and otis. your legacy lives on forever

  • I really love the song "I'll Be Your Love Line" featuring Ali[Ollie and Melvin. If anyone has it, please, could you post it?

  • He sang this song "press and curl" and all. Sing it partner!!!! Whew!

  • I also played this cassette out! How I loved this song so much! I just loved Ollies's voice! None like him ! I loved everything about his voice!

    Peace!

  • He is not David Ruffin, that's all ^^

But you're right he's got a very nice voice:)

  • I used to wear this cassette out!

  • Evlin,

Always Special in my Life and Heart.

    Forever.

  • such a great voice we wish we can see you perform somewhere. by the way were is your next performance

    your friends

  • laying it flat out

  • Ali-Ollie is one of the best vocalists and musicians on the planet. He not only sings, but he writes wonderful songs, plays keyboards and is a great actor.

  • you forgot to mention he is a percussionist, as well as a bassist. :)

  • well well.this is why ilove soul train...i didnt know they song this songon here...folks this was around the same time period that dennis edwards(not performing) was kicked out then ole came in and did a wonderful job, then he got kicked out then they got dennis edwards back again.then dennis got kicked out again ollie was a ngreat temptaion, on a whole new tip was also a singer song writer too did plays ans stuff.well thats right he was on the dennis edward revene for a minute as well

  • Why did Edwards got kicked?

  • Ali Ollie and Dennis (as well as Bo Henderson) are friends and have great mutual respect for each other. The changes in lead singers can be traced to the only surviving member of the Temps and the originator of the group Otis ("my way or the highway") Williams. Otis is a control freak, greedy and not very loyal to the people who work with him. He gets credit for maintaining the unique sound. His people skills leave much to be desired. He will get his comeuppance just like all the rest. Patience.

  • thats was just the movie, not real life, thye did that for entertainment. You should read the book which came out before the movie

  • Bo Henderson sued Williams upon separating from the group. That was after the movie and after the book. You should read the contents of Bo's lawsuit.

  • Love Ollie's voice sooo much....Classic

  • I think Ali's falsetto is better more pleasurable to listen to than Phillip Bailey's,

whom in my opinion pitch is not perfect, I know I'm being critical but I have a critical ear.

  • When you see New Edition, the Temptations will always live.

  • That is so true!

  • this is one on me i thought i knew just about all of their stuff this is great

  • does anybody know whos that singing lead

  • his name is Ali-Ollie Woodson.

  • that is Ali Woodson!

  • Evlin,

I MISS YOU SO MUCH MY LOVE IT HURTS MORE AND MORE EACH DAY BEING APART FROM YOU.
