1)Pick a character then deselect it.

2)Hold the Player Token above any of the 1sts and hit "Y".

3)Hit L+R+START

4)Go back to the screen you were just at.

5)Your character should now have one of the firsts

in the character portrait at the bottom of the screen

It only works with certain characters, google "character selection bug smash world forums" and you'll find it

I think it's performed this way:

Choose Marth, then hit B and hover over Kirby, make him white, then L+R+Start to go back to the main screen. Then go back to the Melee screen where it'll show Kirby in your icon thing but if you look at where the button is it's on Marth. Then when you start you'll be Marth with Kirby stock logos. It's a cool glitch and can be done with a few different characters.

when your character is selected, you press B on the select screen to deselect it, then you move the cursor over someone else, like c. falcon, but you don't select him. You press Y once to change the color (still not selected), then you soft reset with L+R+Start. When you go back to the character select screen, you'll have a different icon for the character, but your original will still be the one selected.

You're icon will be different, but you'll be the neutral color of your char

It's a glitch you can do...forgot how you do it exactly but it's by chosing Captain Falcon...then removing the token off him and picking your real character...but while hitting exit or something at the same time. Then when you go back into VS mode it'll show you picked some low tier character but when you start the match you'll be whoever it is you wanted to be with their icon.

SOMETHING like that...maybe someone else can reply to you with a cleaner version.
