Mugen isn't really an abbreviation - rather, if it ever was, it was forgotten by the devs years ago. Mugen is the Japanese word for endlessness or infinity. It's pronounced Moo-gin, not Muh-jin.

holy shit guys. there is no proper way to pronounce Mugen. some say 'Moo-Gen" other say "Moo-Jen" some say "Myoo-gen" or "Myoo-jen" there is no PROPER way to say it. I pronounce it "Moo-gen" since the Samurai Shamploo character Mugen's name is pronounced that way. "Mugen" also means a mis-mash of styles or freestyle, so i think that pretty much sums up what Mugen is pretty accurately.
