  • those 3.3 liter V 6 engines are only good for about 200,000 miles. A friend of mine had an 02 Grand caravan with that same motor and at 185,000 miles, it cracked the heads. Should've either gotten the Chrysler 3.8 or the Mitsubishi 3.0. We used to have an 89 with the mitsubishi engine. When we sold it, it had 385,036 miles on it and still solid. However, that van had a leak in the windshield and roof rack which caused the electronics in the van to go haywire. It served us well though

  • Well the biggest issues is that its part of the GM family and IV known lots of people who had the caravan and the voyager and they were all crap. No matter the millage or the year they were all junk, Electrical and mechanical. Plus that very van caused alot of deaths in infants cause if it was rear ended the seat back mechanism would snap and the seat would fold back and the parents head would hit the baby's cracking the base of the skull. Research it you will find hundred's of reports on it

  • I want your neighbors. Mine cry and whine to the "man" when I change the oil in my driveway.

  • @Harmonlisa Oh, I've been down that road...almost went to court over it.

  • HAHAH at black plague and rustang reference. Your voice makes it hilarious HAHAHA

  • It's a chrysler grand voyager.

  • No cash for clunkers well maybe

  • eek thats a dead engine valve train is fucked up right on that first crank

  • geez your neigborhoods got some nice cars... 3rd gen camaro, bonneville, vintage truck , and whatever that gold car is across the street, and a triumph, prelude, and good ol chevy truck in your own driveway.

  • @corvettefan96 The gold car is an old Chevy Nova. What you're calling a Triumph is actually a 1976 MGB convertible.

  • What model is the Buick that you use to rescue your mini-van?

  • @detric9508 88 LeSabre

  • How did you get the van back to your house.

  • @Corvette1658 We thought about trailering it home, but in the end a tow truck was hired.

  • @Corvette1658 Oh ok so how is all of your family cars doing and i would like to see some cold starts.

  • Is it ever sunny where you guys live? it seems like it's overcast in each of your videos...

  • @Taldoable Welcome to Illinois. If you don't like the weather, wait fifteen minutes.

Yes, there really are sunny days and they do show up in my videos.

  • The 3.3 and 3.8 have a timing chain whereas the 3.0 Mitsubishi engine uses a timing belt. The ticking could be remnants of the broken chain or it could be a bent or broken valve. Regardless it's going to be one time consuming and expensive fix.

  • Grand Voyager is Plymouth NOT Chrysler

  • @Matthew55904 As the Plymouth name was phased out, the models once sold under the Plymouth name were rebranded as Chrysler. Some were discontinued and some found homes under Chrysler's remaining brands.

  • @uxwbill as Plymouth had the grand voyager and voyage van at the SAME time Chrysler had the Grand Caravan, Caravan (as dodge) AND the Town & Country all 3 vans are EXACTLY the same the Town & Country used to be a Station Wagon

  • Indeed, all the vans are pretty much the same thing, differing only in name (and for the T&C, probably some options that were exclusive to it). However, when Chrysler opted to discontinue the Plymouth name, those models gradually took on Chrysler branding. This van is one of them--it is a Chrysler Grand Voyager and says so on the body. It seems that change was made in December of '99 for the Voyager minivans.

  • @uxwbill smart guy to follow the details, also have you ever watched the tv show, top 'gear, and if u ever replace the reliant wagon, get one of the reliant robin's in the video

  • So that was a timing chain and not a knock knock ?

  • @walkingfreak It was bad news knocking...the #2 piston basically exploded.

  • @uxwbill ouch

  • General Motors will beat Chrysler any day of the week!

  • I guess it depends on what it is. I've loved my K-cars and found them oh-so-easy to work on--easily the best of any car I ever worked on. They were a thoughtful design. Not so for this van! I would gladly take a GM (or Ford!) minivan in place of this, but I'm not sure either would be any more fun to work on.

  • my mon's car had a 2.7l engine

  • lol our 05 grand caravan has a 3.8 in it.

  • That's a very close relation to the 3.3L engine.

  • in all the vans they have belts not chains for timing

  • While it may differ from year to year, or (more probably) generation to generation, the 2000 model year van and its engine use a timing chain.

  • @lukeschillpad

I love when people like you post comments when you have NO idea what you are talking about.

The 3.3 and 3.8 BOTH have timing chains. The 3.0 Mitsubishi has a timing belt, as well as the 2.4 Chrysler engine.

This van has a CHAIN, not a belt.

Please do some research before posting and making yourself sound like an idiot.

  • @lukeschillpad no not exactly this van for sure has a timing chain. i have worked on many. most commonly these things leak from the oil pan and once u get the pan off you can actually see the timing chain (not belt) towards the passenger side of it.

  • i dont think the 3.3 is interference. i know the chrysler 3.5s that were introduced at about the same time weren't but later did become interference. however, im not sure if the 3.3 changed too.

  • It seems to turn over fine, but doesn't seem to want to start! Have you been able to figure out what the problem is and to solve the problem?

  • Will now they mom has a new car she now drive's a 2002 Buick you should see the video mother's new car.

  • If i remember correctly, it was a piston that came apart. If you try to fix it, check the cylinder wall to see how bad it's scored

  • RIP Van

  • Yup the Van is done! My Gramps has an 87" Olds 98. Thing is showroom and has 13000 orig km. Virtually parked in heated garage since it left the dealer 87'.

  • Good luck finding your mom a new car. So whats going to happing to the van

  • Rod bearing?

  • @Omega47 Worse than that. #2 piston, connecting rod and piston skirt. We found the chunks in the oil pan.

  • What the hell was she doing? lol

  • sounds like on of the head gaskets blew out in this van

  • @locoguy2427 I wish it was that simple. The #2 piston self-destructed.

  • ah... ok piston, i waz thinking the head gasket becuz of the sound it made wen u started it :-D

  • Hi uxwbill my name is Steven i live in Algonquin IL. I know you are from IL. If you don't fix the van. I know a nice car. You get your mom a Vovlo xc60 or a Audi q5 Those are nice They are SUV's

  • @Corvette1658 Thank you for the suggestions. My mother considered some SUVs but she didn't end up really liking any of the ones she looked at.

  • You Should do a cold start that buick the one on this video i know that you did the another buick all ready

  • Aw, you didn't take the big brown piece of junk? Well I love a smooth-running Buick anyday.

  • sounds like a timing belt

  • I have to say, I get a kick out of your videos. You remind me very much of the guy that taught me to work on cars. He too had a stable of cars nearing a quarter million miles in his family. He'd rebuild anything.

  • how many miles is on your other buick

  • Hey uxwbill, if it is the 3.0 it could be the valve guides. They were known to slip down on the engine. The only way to fix that I be;ieve was to put in new cylinder heads.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. It's something we'll definitely check into when we're going over it.

  • How does a timing chain last 200k miles in a Chrysler? LOL Chrysler! Timing chains in Saturns are meant to last forever as long as you take care of the motor!

epic fail. never will I buy a chrysler. I'd buy a G.M. over a Chrysler anyday.

  • How many people really keep a vehicle that long anyway? I suspect the idea was "just good enough" engineering, which I don't really like.

Honestly, I don't know how Chrysler got so far off the right track. Both of the Plymouth Reliant cars I have are great--easy to work on, well designed, etc. This van makes *everything* a chore.

If Chrysler wants to survive, I think they desperately need another "K car idea" to pull them through...

  • I'm not a fan of good enough enginnering as well, and some of Chrysler's bad marks are reliability in general, the fact that they made few fuel sippers (except now, when they have Fiat), etc. Personally, I'd keep a car until it's killed (totaled, transmission/transaxle pops, engine pops, axles break, wheels fall off, whatever.)

And if you're a big fan of the Plymouth Reliants for ease of DIY & well designed, you'll love the Saturn S-series. although they're not as roomy as I like, they're good.

  • Typical Chrysler.

  • sound like the timeing belt or chain went south

  • wait why did you call it a Rustang? Its called a Mustang

  • Maybe not if it was old and rusty. (This one was not, but it's still humorous.)

  • just to let you know the 3.3L and 3.8L are non interferance motors

  • the black plague lol good one. boy i hope this isnt the fate of my grandfather's 99 plymouth voyager. its given him ten years of reliable service. although a few times my uncle has driven it and something went wrong. nothing to bad though. just got 100,000 miles this year.

  • Oh, I don't think it will be. But you should be aware that by all accounts, the timing chain on a 3.3/3.8 Chrysler FWD V6 is said to last 200,000 miles. For many people, that's a lot of driving and longer than they keep a car anyway.

Of course, your grandfather's van could have a different engine. If it is a "voyager" and not a "grand voyager" it could have a four cylinder engine in it. (Don't know which one, would guess it is the Chrysler 2.5--a nice non-interference engine.)

  • I really can't say that ours has been a bad van. It has had more than its fair share of "stupid little problems" some of which were easy to fix and others that were not so easy.

  • oh boy, yep its a grand voyager. who knows, he might get rid of it before the next 10 years or next 100,000 miles, and if thats the case, i will miss it

  • is the 2.2 4cl a interference engine?

  • No, it is not. Should it go out of time, you can replace the timing belt and go again.

This is also true of the 2.5L four cylinder, as the two engines have a lot in common.

  • ok bill thanks alot! :D

  • Oh, that doesnt sound too good... hope you can get it fixed, i dont know a lot about how to fix cars, i know how they work, just not how to fix them.

  • You might be surprised. If you know how something works, you probably know more than you think about how to fix it.

  • Definitely sounds like timing.

  • Welcome back!

Yeah, I'm sure that timing is involved. Just not sure about any other damage.

  • The keykeeper's buick is awesome!!

  • does the key keeper have a check engine light in his lesabre?

  • Yes, for failure to enter sequential fuel injection mode due to the camshaft sensor not working.

It looks to be an electrical problem...

  • always those camshaft sensors...

  • 3800 Vortec. Can't kill em.

  • The 3800 is not a Vortec.

  • I was wondering where the "not a Vortec" comment came from, it seemed random until I viewed all the comments. But now it makes sense, and it's definitely not a Vortec design.

The GM 3800 V6, is, however, definitely the most amazing and enduring engine I've ever seen.

  • Yes, I agree the 3800 is one of my favorite engines, and definitely my favorite V6 engine. Thanks for the comment back.

  • We have the same motor in our minivan, I am at 122k and its 11 years almost. It ticks here and there but powers thru and gets great MPGs.

  • Hopefully you can save it, after all the radiator work you did to it. Is its still on the original trans?

  • Yep, it's the original Chrysler 4 speed automatic.

However, we've done some work on it as the factory supplied cooler lines would not stop leaking. We made our own much better replacements and it hasn't leaked since. It's also had the fluid changed regularly.

  • Hmmm. Never heard that from a vehicle before, then again I am only 16 and car-less.

I had heard bad things about Chrisler. I heard they are a pain in the ass to work on. But IDK for sure.

  • I hear the turbocharged version of the PT Cruiser is a Lot Of Fun to work on.

I really don't know where it started to go so wrong for them. Both of the Reliants that I have are not bad at all to work on. Some might disagree, but I think that if Chrysler wants to survive, they desperately need another Aries/Reliant type of car. Something that's affordable, durable, nicely equipped, easy to fix when it does need repair and reliable.

  • PT cruisers look like ass.

My friend that has a dad that owns a totruck company said theat they don't use Chrysler trucks anymore becuase they wer so hard to maintain and work on. Now they use Ford and GM.

  • ford & gm are the best trucks ever

  • thats what ive been telling everyone to lol my dad had a lebaron conv. that had lots of problems and i called it a blackhole lol

  • Well...it's non-interference, so you are ok there but... You may want to weigh the "worth" of putting all that time and effort into an engine with 195,000 miles on it, in a van currently worth about 1800...running.

Not to be a downer, but engines just don't wear out in one spot only, like the T-chain.

  • I see what you are saying. However, any informed decision will require that we examine it at the very least. So that's what we'll do, as time permits.

  • Now I aint no professional, lol. But we had a 90 accord and the camshaft snapped, sounded just like that upon cranking it. so It makes sence that if there is no timing belt it would sound similar. id say you may have had a timing belt break.

  • Poor van! I just can't believe out of that whole parking lot, that Mustang had to park right next to the van.

  • The Mustang was already there. I believe it was being offered for sale.

  • Oh okay. I hate when people park next to me when there are other spaces available. It must be some sort of herding thing. Good luck with the van, hope it can get fixed.

  • make a vid of you working on it please./

  • timing is off

  • timing belt?

  • im pretty sure its an interference engine, but dont quote me on it. chrysler engines are a bitch to change timing belts on. for some reason chrysler thinks you should have to drop the engine to do almost anything, other than change the oil....

  • our old jeep grand cherokee was very easy to work on , maybe it was because of the old 4.0 i6 from amc

  • ha ha yeah, i had to drop the motor just to change the timing belt and you need to remove the antifreeze, and power steering resoviers just to replace the accesory belt on my 96 neon....

  • that had to suck, we replaced almost everything on the jeep motor and never had to take more then the front grill off to do anything and the only reason we had to take that off was to replace the rad, plus we really over towed with the jeep, a few time i was supprised the front wheels stayed on the ground while we were driving,

, but the jeep was a really tough car, we got rid of it when we moved and my dad brought his f250 with a 7.3 in it down here, now that has power to do anything

  • sweet vid 5 stars!!!!!

  • Ouch that knocking even made me cringe!

so when the timing chain goes it knocks like that and makes the engine sound like its not getting Compression?

  • You'd better believe I cringed when it fired. As the annotation says, "ouch!".

It was running at highway speed (~2000 RPM) when it quit. I was told that the vehicle produced a loud clunking from the passenger's side, which the timing chain would be close(r) to. They thought an accessory had locked up at first.

If this is an interference engine (don't know for sure) one or more valves could have been smacked by the pistons and bent.

  • so better yet Totaled huh if the valves are bent?

    The Engine is toast? Ouch!

  • No, it's not technically totaled. In the case of an interference engine, bent valves (if any - sometimes you can get lucky) can be replaced, pistons cleaned up (if need be) the mess cleaned up, and the timing can be reset. After that the engine should run again.

A non-interference engine could simply be retimed (if the only problem is the timing chain or belt) as the pistons and valves cannot hit each other.

  • My mom had a 1996 Dodge Gran Caravan and it lasted for a long time. The only problems we had was the battery goin dead and some gnawing sound when the van in park.

  • I can't say that this van has been unreliable, and it hasn't had the easiest life. The only bad thing about it is all the little stupid things that have gone wrong, or weren't right to start with.

Once we'd fixed the poorly designed transmission cooling system so it didn't leak, this van just ran and ran. I don't think it's over yet...we'll see as the Keykeeper and I have time to get into it.

  • 1 cylinder got no comp.

  • Don't think thats an interference engine Bill, here's what I found for IF engines for Chrysler products:

    CHRYSLER

    1993-95 1.5L Colt

    1987-88 1.5L Colt

    1992-95 1.5L Eagle Summit

    1987-88 1.6L Colt

    1989-92 1.6L Eagle Summit

    1994-98 2.0L Neon Stratus

    1990-95 2.0L Eagle Talon

  • It could have sucked a valve or busted valve spring too - time to check with a dealer service manager or hit the library for Motors manuals or tear into it. At least it turns - last Chrysler front wheel drive I had locked solid (hydraulic lock due to water leak into the hot cylinder). To me is sounds more like it threw a rod bearing.

  • One of my brothers borrowed the Chrysler factory service manual.

Whatever went wrong looks like it will be an absolute joy to fix. There's just no room to work in there. At least inspecting the timing chain won't be bad--I'm told that it's possible to see and evaluate it by dropping the oil pan.

  • Listening to it a few more times it almost sounds like top end noise, maybe a sucked or stuck valve, bad rocker, bent pushrod or stuck lifter.

  • All I've been able to find so far is that the 93-97 3.3L is an interference engine, and one suggestion on a web forum (of unknown validity) that the newer 3.3 in this van is as well. However, it was stated that damage was unlikely unless a piston was at TDC with the valves open.

  • yikes thats not good

    chrylers...

  • Im pretty sure the 3.3L is an interference engine.

  • please fix it, dont junk it

  • let us know what you find it allmost sounds like the bareing on my alternator that goes away after its warm going to replace it soon

if thats the same engine as mine looks exactly like it its a 3.3 liter 6 v EFI engine

  • it did coz i seee videos of them blowing cars up what happin

  • Sounds like one of the cylinders no longer has compression...you can hear the sound change with the starter cranking.

  • ha ha ha ha try to geting 4000 or so for it give it to cash for clunkers if its not starting up

  • That program ended a while ago...

  • yup bill sounds like it went " tango uniform"

  • good luck with that...............

  • We will probably need some! (Actually, make that a LOT!)

  • My mom has a 2000 Olymouth Voyager SE with the same motor. They are a pain in the butt to work on, especially changing the spark plugs. Had to crawl under the damn thing to get at the back side of the motor.

  • Yeah, I was really hoping for something (comparatively) _easy_ like a blown ignition module or bad fuel pump.

  • Nothing on a Chrysler mini-van is ever easy to fix. good luck.
