Instead of quibbling over words like disorder you should be talking about when medication /is/ warranted and how to get people adequate treatment. These labels are just for grouping people for statistical purposes so treatments can be tested and the course of the problem, useful therapies, etc, guessed at.
These are "normal" in that they are simply manifestations of something happening in the brain, whether it's your HPA axis going into overdrive from stress or a deficiency in your diet. "Disorder" is just shorthand for something that hurts you or someone else and is statistically unusual. It doesn't mean your response is weird. Your response is a perfectly human response to a shitty situation.

Well I think dyslecia can be clasified as a learnign disability. And I dont know how things look in USA... but in Europ no one is going to pescribe a medicine on such a disability. The DSM represents scientists stumbling efforts to communicate more efficiently about human suffering, yours included. Its purpose is to improve research, not to decide whether you are 'normal' or not. A psychiatrist or a psychologist does not decide whether you are normal or not - he or she is not out to judge or to condemn you. His or her goal is to help you, to find the cause of your pain and attend to it, and if it cannot be cured, help you to live with it as best as possible. Take it easy.

you didn`t mention that the main diagnostic criteria for all these disorders is impairment and distress caused to the individual ... so with adjustment disorder, for example, the patient can only be given a diagnosis if he or she suffers (like if the adjustment issues impair functioning with school or work, social activities, etc. over a long period of time - and only then is it considered abnormal since it`s malfunctional to the person).
It sickens me to know so many people ONLY have a psychiatrist and No other mental support structure to address the Root CAUSES.
A pill cannot fix a poor child who has suffered abuse. The medications are essentially drug induced amnesia. Then these poor individuals explode from the bottled up emotions and take their own lives, or hurt others when they develop inevitable tolerances to their medications. People need group therapy, one on one therapy, to develop coping skills for real improvement.
So, the new diagnosis for the "imagined" illnesses will probably send all kinds of folks with chronic fatigue symptoms to the shrink instead. Psychologists are expected to take individual situations into account, good ones don't just blindly follow the book. Good psychs are aware of these issues and take them into consideration when making judgements

Yep, I just got rotated to a new "head shrinker" because I refuse to take the fluoride based meds he wanted me to take. But to get my pain meds for my fibro I have to see the Shrink. He also wanted to know all about my politics and religion. When I told him it was none of his business, he said I was being "combative" LOL.

Having worked at a mental state hospital I know for a fact pica is serious business. One of our residents got ahold of one of those giant oversized safetypins they used to use on diapers, swolled it whole.. when they did the x-ray the pin was open. He's fine now, but if's definitely some kind of selective behavior because not all patients were pica like most children like to suck on their toys.

There's a Psychiatrist named Thomas Szasz that might be of interest to you all. He is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse and strongly believes that a lot of these mental disorders are false and, essentially, made up. Some of his views are a bit extreme, but in many cases he presents a good argument. He's a very prolific writer and, at least at my Uni, his books are pretty readily available.
Yes we are relying on a priority group of people to dictate what is and what is not normal behaviour. The individuals in this priority group have atleadt 10 years of education before they actually begin treating patients. Don't belittle that.

Im not promoting use of marijuana for kids, bt Im making a point that the pica diagnosis was a result of an underlying stomach disorder that hadnt been properly treated..I also point out that, in this case, pica can be more serious than the simple example that was given in the video. Its natural for babies to put evrythng in their mouths..we might not like it, but its a primitive way of exploring your surroundings.If the behavior persists in older children and causes them additional pain then..
I realize that my comment is aimed at just 1 of the disorders stated in the video....I recently read about an autistic child that also had this "pica" disorder..The mother describes how her child would literally eat the entire front section of his shirt daily...Since "what goes in, must come out", her child would be in agony every time he had a b.m. The mother states that after starting a medical marijuana treatment, which eased the pain in his stomach, he stopped eating his shirts.

I read on some of the posts that psych majors are kinda nutz. So, true, I'm one myself. I see people all the time that just don't want to look within. That is what therapy does for you. It helps you look within.
But these meds; people get so dependent on drugs they will actually look at the DSM online and then take the info to the dr. to get the diagnosis. I have a 25 year old in-law that got tested for ADHD. Sure enough, she has that too. 8 meds a day and counting.

The DSM III may years ago diagnosed homosexuality as a mental illness. Later it was revised and removed from the DSM IV.

But I found out that they usually do not practice what they preach. They have hang-ups and biases that negatively effect clients, especially minorities. A lot of psychologists are extremely prejudiced against people with brown skin. And some are still very homophobic.
The definition of a science is the study and observation of phenomenon. For a Phenomenon to be studyable it must be constant. Psychology is way too random to be classified as a science. It is usaully just the Psycholgist arbitrary opinion of you. Think for your self.

however due to their unique nature, certain things pertaining to personality like psychodynamic theory and humanistic psychology are hard to test scientifically so they are still not officially accepted...

Look I agree that we should hold doctors and any professional in health care up to high standards, and that they shouldn't just prescribe medicine willy nilly without considering all the factors first, but you can't deny that studying the mind and mental processes/behaviors isn't important. The ones I know are fixated on the belief that group therapy is "the way" to cure people. Getting people into a confined group is one of the easiest methods for brainwashing and indoctrination. Im going into psychiatry myself, and its amazing what is considered a disorder or syndrome these days. To me it seems that they have a psychiatric answer and cure for every possible human behavior.
Society should protect itself from these psycho charlatans. The harm they have already done to a generation (especially in USA) is enormous and its consequences will be felt for many more years. How can you trust a gov't to deal with this when so many politicians and psychiatrists are sponsored either directly or as investors in pharmaceutical companies? Patient will insist other's have disorders based on non objective reasoning, will often try to dictate what behaviour classifies as "broken" without physical testing, and without unbiased classification of what constitutes as a healthy control (normal person). As a last line of rhetoric, the patient will sometimes insist that people who disagree with their assertions, are in denial.
Sounds like these DSM manuals put out a lot of defamation about people. Citizens should learn to file lawsuits against these psyches, and bring hidden cameras with you to record them as evidence to bring to court. :)

Instead of quibbling over words like disorder you should be talking about when medication /is/ warranted and how to get people adequate treatment. These labels are just for grouping people for statistical purposes so treatments can be tested and the course of the problem, useful therapies, etc, guessed at.

These are "normal" in that they are simply manifestations of something happening in the brain, whether it's your HPA axis going into overdrive from stress or a deficiency in your diet. "Disorder" is just shorthand for something that hurts you or someone else and is statistically unusual. It doesn't mean your response is weird. Your response is a perfectly human response to a shitty situation.

This video is another way to stigmatize those who do have a mental illness by your attitude and body language basically suggesting that some mental illnesses do not exist. Until you have children or a family member who has some unnormal issues u will never know. As far as medications go I completely understand that there are reasons y some should not and do not have to take medications but there are some reasons for it. We have let life get so complicated that a lot of people think they need an expert to live life. To be able to get that help, people want their insurance to pay for it, so they have to have a diagnosis for the insurance to pay and so ordinary problems have to be a "disorder".
Parenting is hard and media tells us that life can be neat and perfect if we just get the right answer from the right expert. WE are the experts, life is messy, so live it and suck it up when things aren't perfect.

I have been thinking all the labels that children have received over the years,were bogus. Giving them such a label,makes them feel they are not right in the head,which only reinforces negative feelings about themselves, and gives licence to the negative actions that brought them to seek help in the first place. "like" because it is informative but i would also recommend actually talking to practicing psychiatrists about the dsm. i know very few doctors who would prescribe a drug for adjustment disorder. the pica you mention is likely related to iron deficiency when people start eating clay and "non-nutritive" substances.

The DSM represents scientists stumbling efforts to communicate more efficiently about human suffering, yours included. Its purpose is to improve research, not to decide whether you are 'normal' or not. A psychiatrist or a psychologist does not decide whether you are normal or not - he or she is not out to judge or to condemn you. His or her goal is to help you, to find the cause of your pain and attend to it, and if it cannot be cured, help you to live with it as best as possible. Take it easy.

you didn`t mention that the main diagnostic criteria for all these disorders is impairment and distress caused to the individual ... so with adjustment disorder, for example, the patient can only be given a diagnosis if he or she suffers (like if the adjustment issues impair functioning with school or work, social activities, etc. over a long period of time - and only then is it considered abnormal since it`s malfunctional to the person).

It sickens me to know so many people ONLY have a psychiatrist and No other mental support structure to address the Root CAUSES.
A pill cannot fix a poor child who has suffered abuse. The medications are essentially drug induced amnesia. Then these poor individuals explode from the bottled up emotions and take their own lives, or hurt others when they develop inevitable tolerances to their medications. People need group therapy, one on one therapy, to develop coping skills for real improvement.

So, the new diagnosis for the "imagined" illnesses will probably send all kinds of folks with chronic fatigue symptoms to the shrink instead. Then they can put them on a fluoride based medication that will worsen the symptoms and then the cycle of control deepens.. Great.. Wow this is misleading and biased. DSM is more of a guideline not a bible. It is necessary sometimes e.g. for legal protection. Yes, it is greatly flawed. Psychologists are expected to take individual situations into account, good ones don't just blindly follow the book. Good psychs are aware of these issues and take them into consideration when making judgements

Having worked at a mental state hospital I know for a fact pica is serious business. One of our residents got ahold of one of those giant oversized safetypins they used to use on diapers, swolled it whole.. when they did the x-ray the pin was open. He's fine now, but if's definitely some kind of selective behavior because not all patients were pica like most children like to suck on their toys.

There's a Psychiatrist named Thomas Szasz that might be of interest to you all. He is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse and strongly believes that a lot of these mental disorders are false and, essentially, made up. Some of his views are a bit extreme, but in many cases he presents a good argument. He's a very prolific writer and, at least at my Uni, his books are pretty readily available.

I realize that my comment is aimed at just 1 of the disorders stated in the video....I recently read about an autistic child that also had this "pica" disorder..The mother describes how her child would literally eat the entire front section of his shirt daily...Since "what goes in, must come out", her child would be in agony every time he had a b.m. The mother states that after starting a medical marijuana treatment, which eased the pain in his stomach, he stopped eating his shirts.

I read on some of the posts that psych majors are kinda nutz. So, true, I'm one myself. I see people all the time that just don't want to look within. That is what therapy does for you. It helps you look within.
But these meds; people get so dependent on drugs they will actually look at the DSM online and then take the info to the dr. to get the diagnosis. I have a 25 year old in-law that got tested for ADHD. Sure enough, she has that too. 8 meds a day and counting.

thank you for addressing this issue,the main problem in america is big pharma...46% of americans are on one prescribed drug a day.24% are on three or more drugs a day!! These numbers are stagering,maybe if people discontinued poisoning themselves with government approved drugs,they would wake up and see the tyranical hell that the elite are ushering in!! Instead they continue to trust blindly in drs,who are paid commisions on the amount of dum down drugs they push to you and your family.

Abnormal behavior is any that keeps a person from work or social activity of choice. If a person acts differently (but is harmless to themselves and others) whether I agree or not.
Years ago the DSM III held homosexuality as a mental illness. Due to public outrage it was removed in DSM IV,
Changes made by a precious few is not about mental illness. It is about fascist control of the public mind & profit making for pharmaceutical companies.

Do your own research. And Be your own best friend. And stay away from university psychologists. They are the worst, and very paranoid about every minutiae.

Abnormal activity is that which hinders a persons ability to participate in work or social activity of their choice. Different people (harmless to others and themselves) may choose to live their lives in a way that you and I may not approve of. Does that make them mentally ill? I think not.
The DSM III may years ago diagnosed homosexuality as a mental illness. Later it was revised and removed from the DSM IV.
Some of the changes in DSM V are nothing more than fascist control.

@wildguy8989 I agree. It's pseudo-science down to the core. I have a technical degree in the field. And I had excellent professors when it came to the lectures. But I found out that they usually do not practice what they preach. They have hang-ups and biases that negatively effect clients, especially minorities. A lot of psychologists are extremely prejudiced against people with brown skin. And some are still very homophobic.

The definition of a science is the study and observation of phenomenon. For a Phenomenon to be studyable it must be constant. Psychology is way too random to be classified as a science. It is usaully just the Psycholgist arbitrary opinion of you. Think for your self.

sorry to burst your bubble, but like all science psychology is based on the scientific method, empirical studies, and peer review of phenomena..
however due to their unique nature, certain things pertaining to personality like psychodynamic theory and humanistic psychology are hard to test scientifically so they are still not officially accepted...

@plaidchuck I have been to Psychologist in the past and I have tested there methods. I have applied there Advice to my life and it never made any better. My point is that I have evaluated the dated for my self and I know that the whole field of Psychology and psychology is nothing more than the art of manipulation and control and lies. All you have said is that it works you have not back your statement up with any empirical data. Untill you do this I will discredit you good sir,

Look I agree that we should hold doctors and any professional in health care up to high standards, and that they shouldn't just prescribe medicine willy nilly without considering all the factors first, but you can't deny that studying the mind and mental processes/behaviors isn't important. If you say it doesn't benefit anyone well you could say that about any science as well if you want to. After all there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

@wildguy8989 It's really about the individual and what works for the individual. Sadly though, the majority of the time psychologists do not approve of individualism or reasoning. The ones I know are fixated on the belief that group therapy is "the way" to cure people. Getting people into a confined group is one of the easiest methods for brainwashing and indoctrination. It's similar to communism. And most of the time psychologists want their clients to follow a prescribed agenda of nonsense.

A doctor said he would commit me to an institution if he could for my refusal to take the swine flu vaccine, and my "vaccine paranoia", and this Nazi type doctor was serious. There are some control freaks who enter psychiatry exclusively to exert dominion over the human being, and they work for the power elite, the police state, and big Pharma. Im going into psychiatry myself, and its amazing what is considered a disorder or syndrome these days. To me it seems that they have a psychiatric answer and cure for every possible human behavior.

Society should protect itself from these psycho charlatans. The harm they have already done to a generation (especially in USA) is enormous and its consequences will be felt for many more years. How can you trust a gov't to deal with this when so many politicians and psychiatrists are sponsored either directly or as investors in pharmaceutical companies? As for TT20091 where is he coming from? The evidence of the harm existing prescribed drugs are doing is extensive and anyone can research this.

Sounds like these DSM manuals put out a lot of defamation about people. Citizens should learn to file lawsuits against these psyches, and bring hidden cameras with you to record them as evidence to bring to court. :)
