I'm a student of Kempo (18 yrs) and Aikido(6yrs). They blended well for me.No art is better than the other. Effectiveness is something else. When Aikido students want to spar w/ me the get a reality check. They cannot catch my hands or feet and I do not hyper extend. I target their hands. Especially if they have them open. They are defenseless without hands
You've got to be kidding me! This is not Karate vs Aikido, it is dancing. I am still waiting to see a video uploaded that has an Aikido practitioner against someone of another fighting style in a real fight, not the staged crap dojo demonstrations Aikido loves to put on. I'm not saying anything against Aikido only that the fights always shown are not fights, just promos for Aikido.
Although some forms of Aikido do compete, most Aikidoka view competition as a "bad" thing. I have studied Kumano Juku Dojo-Shingu Aikido for a little more than two years now and agree with my Sensei. As soon as you aim to win or defeat your opponent, you unknowingly open yourself to many attacks. Aikido, in my opinion, should be studied as a way of harmoniously eliminating conflict.
Aikido people simply need to find out that most of what they do is not applicable on the street. It has some fine moves, but they are difficult against random and chaotic attaches that are not prearranged. It might be good for them to vary their training more and use realistic attacks.
I don't need to read up...I have seen with my two eyes what happens. The military uses a mixture of many different grappling and striking arts combined for quick learning and application.
Reading gets you nothing! Experience is your best teacher. Now go out and play with the other kids!
I disagree, There is no one true art that is better than the others. Depending on the proficiency of the practitioner, any form of martial art can be effective in real life combat situations. One mans Aikido can be completely different to another mans. The style is not rigid, it's an individual art form, the moves flow around the artist. Different styles don't always have to be in competition with each other, they can also compliment one another. They are all branches from the same tree.
Why don't Aikido people really step up and challenge Karate, Kung Fu or whatever they want? All I've seen so far is Aikido demos mocking other martial arts and Aikidoka talking shit.
Most of the people that mock other martial arts dont truly understand what the point of martial arts is. They don't show respect to all arts equally they pick one or two and favor those over all.
I realized all martial arts have their ups and downs, Their students and teachers who train just as hard as the next. Aikido is just as beautiful as Karate, and JuiJitsu Just because theres a few bad Akidokas out there doesnt mean their all bad =] Let them run their mouth or punch it in if their near.
In every single "Akido vs. Something" video all you see is a staged demonstration. There's always one akido guy supposedly beating another akido guy dressed in the garb of a different style. Cut the crap already, if akido could indeed beat every other system then prove it through actual matches, not slow motion fake demonstrations. Akido may be a good spiritual art and all that but when it comes to fighting all you get is a bunch of stiff skirt wearing fools.
Dude there are people proving akido as an effective system everyday in security and policing. A lot of the concepts are street applicable and from what iv seen (not on youtube) its extremely powerful. Im not an akidoken myself though
Aikido is taught routinely to female cops in Japan. But that is not meant as some kind of invincible fighting system; just set of useful techniques for defense and immobilization. They use the Yoshinkan style, which is very systematic and rigid.
Got nothing to do with the fancy dance in this video. That is just a cool looking demo; why don´t you people just take it as the entertainment that it.
These on-line pissing contests a la "my martial art is bigger than your martial art" are silly.
some aikido parctitioners do compete in competitions of other sorts I personally have fought countless karate taekwondo and kickboxing tournements, and I've seen alot of the Japanese MMA fighters utalize Akido and Aki budo
what style of karate is this video? i did sankukai for about 9 years but eithe rthis is a style of karate i have not seen before or it is just done as a point that aikido is useful
This is not Karate. It's an Aikidoka throwing some weak kicks in the air. I'm really disgusted with these so-called "demonstrations" where Aikido people pretend they're better than other Martial Arts. It is cowardly and shameful! Challenge some real martial artists or go to MMA if you're so tough!
thats what i was asking...as in what 'style' of karate was this as stated in the title of the video.I dont see any karate here!! Plus they aint wearing karate Gi's, so where's the 'karate' aspect come into this video??
To all those dissing people who haven't done Aikido for talking s**t about it: I have done Aikido, I have a black belt in it, and I agree that it is basically useless in a fight.
Also, this video is mistitled. It isn't Aikido vs. Karate, it's just 2 guys doing Aikido.
Im sorry but dont compare a style to your individual skills, just because you suck at fighting doesnt mean this style does, I hav analized the style myself and some of it is usefull, I dont even have to take it and I can tell that some moves are usefull in a fight and your a blackbelt? disgrace to your dojo.
Tideofwar, your post is so moronic as not to merit a reply, but pissed me off enough that I'm making one anyway.
First, since I have done Aikido and you haven't, I obviously am more qualified to talk about this than you. You lose!
Second, I'm not basing my comments on my own skill level. I mentioned that I have a black belt to show that I have sufficient experience with Aikido practitioners to make a judgement. My comments apply to Aikido in general, not to my own skill level.
wow, just wow, I have taken karate and even if I didnt what does that have to do with analizing fighting styles please, don't even speak you obviously came from a shit dojo which trained you 1hour a day 2times a week your knowledge and understanding of this sport is inferior to a monkey, and just because you hav doen aikido doesnt mean you know more than peopel that analize, maybe how to apply in combat but anyone can tell if its usefull or not. plz dont talk, your embarassing yourself.
Just because I have done Aikido for over 10 years doesn't mean I don't know more about it than someone who's never done it? What a joke. There are all kinds of idiotic people on the net, but you get the gold.
Ok, ill give you an example, Sports casters watch soccer alot (or football if you have poor understanding)They know whats usefull on the opponent and whats good and not good to do, how do you think they do that, from analizing them over a peroid of time, some understand it as soon as they see it, Please dont speak your embarassing yourself with your poor knowledge, I didnt say everything is usefull lI said some is, stop posting your making a fool out of yourself.

Another thing: you don't get to tell me what to do. I'm not going to stop posting just because you say so. It's a basic rule of free forums, just like "don't attack people's spelling ability or lack thereof".
You dont listen, you are incompatent its like talking to a monkey, actually never mind, becasue A monkey can learn and you cannot, I hav done Karate an once you have done one style of martial arts and been in spars tournys and street fights as much as I hav you understand whats usefull and whats not, I Picture attacks in my mind when I day dream and I block, parry or dodge them and some moves in Aikido I hav pictured in my mind, Just because you are blackbelt means shit obviously, Incompatence.
Dude, guess what? I listen, I just don't agree with you. And you didn't give any reason to support your point except that you think you are right. Oh, and I forgot, you daydream in Aikido. Very persuasive. Well, everyone thinks they are right. That doesn't make it so. Come back when you have an actual argument. If you're just here to talk s**t, I won't be responding to it anymore.
I'll take this as a joke, since the alternative - that someone with IQ insufficient to imagine anything outside his limited experience is still (perhaps after Herculean effort) able to type words on a keyboard - is hardly believable.
Nonetheless, the humor escapes me. I suppose it's ironically amusing to deny the fact of someone else's experience while mentioning no evidence whatsoever to support one's own opinion.
(1) I have a black belt and yet cannot fight. You can talk about my lack of skill, but my sensei disagrees. So even a fairly high level of Aikido does not imply fighting ability. (2) most Aikidoka have never experienced someone really trying to hit them, due to the training methods used. Thus, despite having valuable techniques, most Aikidoka lack the experience to use them effectively. Another poster said that it depends on how you train. Yes: but Aikido usually discourages effective training.
...to those who keep saying Akido is merely choreographed...
1) have any of you even been in a real fight and or ever took the art yourself to find out how fake it is?
2)ANY art can be tailored for self defense outside of the dojo if people put the effort into it.
It seems to me, some people may just be judging out of ignorance, and others A) think their badass or B) has been deluded into think their "art" is superior to all the others
cj182001 you r right its very useful i like Karate and aikido much, aikido is realy self defence.. muay is like boxing, they train to fight and not for self defence..Karate is a hard kind of self defence.
Karate is one ofo the best for self defence even for street fights, Personnly I hav been forces to fight 5blackguys vs me at once because I apperantly was hitting on his gf, anyways he punched be a dodged back, I had to make an example so I took out the leader( he was talking most shit) with a Mawari-ushiro-toby-geri which took me along time to learn and after that, well I got a chicks number and I walked home with a grin on my face.
i dont know why some people keep saying that Aikido is not an effective martial arts? they are wrong!
first of all, having engaged in a street fight is nothing but a fool. A true martial artist know how to control their emotions and use their skills in a correct circumstances.
Use aikido to promote health, mind discipline, help people, fitness, sport and self defense, sometimes entertainment like Steven Seagal NOT quarrels and senseless fight.
Im tired of hearing and seeing people bragging themselves, large fat heads that they are more proud of kicking some butt and hurting people than keeping Peace and making themselves useful.
Power is not equal to stength. Most Aikido or other martial artist practitioners never understand this.
aikido isnt a destructive art, its designed to simply transmute your opponent's own energy against him. id really like to see how it stands up to a real fight tho. im sure it would be a battle of skill tho.
lol such animosity .....i done muay thai for a while and u wont get better knee and elbow strikes in any martial arts but the kicking and punching could do with improvement(i also done some western boxing and a small bit of karate)....i think aikido is defo not a ring sport like karate/muay thai are and it could be quite usefull in a street fighting environment
First of all, in aikido all the movments are based on your opponents attacks, which means that one that practice aikdo will never attack, there are NO attack technics in aikido, everything you see is defence. The tori (attacker) can approach with full strength. The more strengh and force he comes with, the harder he will fall, aikido is all about guiding the attacker in to the fall, but if he doesn't follow you, HE will break bones and get hurt.
It all depends on how you practice it. If your sparing partner doesn't put up an effort against you and just lets himself be thrown around you will learn nothing.
Those ppl that say "its not effective in street fights" don't know nothing about martial arts and street fights, because 90% of them have not trained more than 1-2 years of martial artes and have not seen or entered in a street fight, and all them have not trained aikido. So you should just ignore them and go to some dojo to see yourself and see yourself.
I have trained jiujitsu, taekwondo and aikido, and I cant say that jiujitsu is better, or taekwondo is better or aikido is better, because everything that you train gives you some skill.
I am agree with 4417955. I made taekwondo, kyokushin and now aikido and noun is better or worse. You can use them all. Separeted or mixed, but in the fight, not the art - the personality, the caracter and the determination winning the fight.
Tomiki Aikido trains well, but most don't bother pressure testing their style so that it becomes impossible to tell whether it would work or not since all they do is speak of theoretical fight situations and never bother putting what they learn to "the test".
There is no karate in this vid. There is only two aikido practitioners doing a choreographed demo.
The designated aggressor is throwing a few kicks and punches, but not with the intention to actually hit anything. Only to give the defender something symbolic to defend against.
Being a fanatic about a particular fighting style is like being a fanatic of a certain religion. We all must find the method that suits ourselves and our personality. Everyone is suited for a potentially different fighting style, and to criticize a specific fighting style, especially without having practiced it fully for many years, is arrogant and hard-headed.
atemis are not meant to be a strike to injure, just to distract your opponent so you can easilier get your technice right, so still there are no direct strikes or kicks in aikido
Atemis may not be meant to inflict injures but still if you do follow though on a atemi you can and probaly will inflict some kind of injure. Atemis isn't strikes today but sometime in history they were strikes meant to cause pain and/or injures.
It might be splitting hairs, but I would tend to disagree. An atemi with no focus behind it (e.g. it will not land) would simply be ignored by an aggressor.
To be effective (IMHO) the atemi must be good enough to make the aggressor defend themselves/focus on it.
Perhaps if one has perfect technique atemi isn't even required, but lesser mortals like me still need to use it.
I agree with you when it comes to practice, but in the street, if you're going to try to attempt a technique (why, I don't know), it's always easier to do it when you've pealed the attacker(s) nose back.
there is no karate fighter in this vid, this is a demonstration, the thing that proves karate is better is that you never see an aikido student or master fight a karate fighter, NEVER. and for people to say aikido is for fighting or could kick ass, is funny, that is against aikido itself to say that. plus it's believing in something there is no proof of. aikido is the santa clause of the martial arts.
Do you think style is what makes a martial art superior than any others? The individual is the one that is the better fighter, not his or her style that thet follow.
That's just a cover up for some martial arts not only being less effective than others, but COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE in reality fighting situations. Aikido's probably fun in a dojo, but its not fun when youre fighting someone and get knocked spark out
If I remeber correctly there is a "aikido style" (called Shodokan Aikido or Tomiki Aikido) that regular use "karate fighers" as ukes in their competionens.
I should mention that this aikido style is genrely frowned upon by "real aikidokans" ;) due to the fact that they go agains O-sensei's wish while holding these competionens
listen akido is good so is martial arts i do martial arts and i am currently a green belt i have joined a club that does tae kwon do and akido if you want any more information on this club then reply
Ultra staged. Giving high kicks when the other guy is at floor level makes you think there is a vision problem with the karate fighter. It is a nice demo though just misrepresented with the title. Makes you expect something different.
Gotta agree with the above, that was an aikido student performing a taekwondo form of karate, looked pretty staged and rehearsed, good form though none the less
You cant claim to be representing Karate when you are attaking in an Aikido style. Its like playing chess with yourself. This is a "Straw-Man" demonstration.
As with anything else, the best style is the simplest. Just watch Ultimate fighting, you can use any style and there are few rules... so what do you see? Boxing and wrestling, simple.

Aikido is to dangerous to be put in as a compedative martial art.
If u excecut a move slightly incorectly when using AIkido in it's full power, you will usualy brake somthing.
This is why Beginers are the most dangerous.

@greadion4 How about BJJ?
Hotora86 1 year ago
What about it?
BJJ is like boxing. Simple, entertaining and designed to beat the crap out of people rather than subdue them by dislocation or.
When I say simple but, any martial art or in fact anything you do takes one crap load of practice to finesse.
Saying this Aikido and Judo come from the same Japanese jujitsu tree. Jujitsu then Aikido and Judo then BJJ came from Judo.

my opinion:
aikido is a more calm, centered and dynamic way of self-defense.
karate is a more faster, aggresive and impactual way of self-defense

Im tired of hearing and seeing people bragging themselves, large fat heads that they are more proud of kicking some butt and hurting people than keeping Peace and making themselves useful.
Power is not equal to stength. Most Aikido or other martial artist practitioners never understand this.
cj182001 3 years ago
Oh, and there is also a kind of ninjustu aikido where they throw you onto their knee and break your spine, then punch you in the face.
I went to a seminar once, it was fun.
corrugatedkitten 3 years ago
I've done Aikido for many years and it is in fact a very street-worthy martial art
They teach it to the police and many aikidoka (both senseis and students) are former police officers.
In addition to the throws we learn many wristlocks and disarming techniques (against mostly knives but there are some anti-gun techniques).
corrugatedkitten 3 years ago
aikido isnt a destructive art, its designed to simply transmute your opponent's own energy against him. id really like to see how it stands up to a real fight tho. im sure it would be a battle of skill tho.

i dont like this kind of martial arts its kinda useless in real life...

lol such animosity .....i done muay thai for a while and u wont get better knee and elbow strikes in any martial arts but the kicking and punching could do with improvement(i also done some western boxing and a small bit of karate)....i think aikido is defo not a ring sport like karate/muay thai are and it could be quite usefull in a street fighting environment

lol no it is not
colmivers 4 years ago
First of all, in aikido all the movments are based on your opponents attacks, which means that one that practice aikdo will never attack, there are NO attack technics in aikido, everything you see is defence. The tori (attacker) can approach with full strength. The more strengh and force he comes with, the harder he will fall, aikido is all about guiding the attacker in to the fall, but if he doesn't follow you, HE will break bones and get hurt.
p3rsseus 4 years ago
yup.. but some aikido styles have added strikes so that the person who does resist canbe easily thrown to the ground
MrPinoy91 3 years ago
learn some koryu, dumbass
ifeellikechickentoni 3 years ago
Well if you remember to tell the aggressor to help your throws by jumping and to attack like grandfather sleep-walking.
vinchant 4 years ago
It all depends on how you practice it. If your sparing partner doesn't put up an effort against you and just lets himself be thrown around you will learn nothing.
tannalein 4 years ago
Those ppl that say "its not effective in street fights" don't know nothing about martial arts and street fights, because 90% of them have not trained more than 1-2 years of martial artes and have not seen or entered in a street fight, and all them have not trained aikido. So you should just ignore them and go to some dojo to see yourself and see yourself.
4417955 4 years ago
I have trained jiujitsu, taekwondo and aikido, and I cant say that jiujitsu is better, or taekwondo is better or aikido is better, because everything that you train gives you some skill.
4417955 4 years ago 2
train Kyokushin and you will change your mind about what you've written.
hecticism 4 years ago
I am agree with 4417955. I made taekwondo, kyokushin and now aikido and noun is better or worse. You can use them all. Separeted or mixed, but in the fight, not the art - the personality, the caracter and the determination winning the fight.
zaraxxxtustra 4 years ago
Tomiki Aikido trains well, but most don't bother pressure testing their style so that it becomes impossible to tell whether it would work or not since all they do is speak of theoretical fight situations and never bother putting what they learn to "the test".
WorldWarCheese 4 years ago
There is no karate in this vid. There is only two aikido practitioners doing a choreographed demo.
The designated aggressor is throwing a few kicks and punches, but not with the intention to actually hit anything. Only to give the defender something symbolic to defend against.
kolsyrade 4 years ago
I see no karate fighter in this vid, just a normal aikido demonstration.
tannalein 4 years ago
Being a fanatic about a particular fighting style is like being a fanatic of a certain religion. We all must find the method that suits ourselves and our personality. Everyone is suited for a potentially different fighting style, and to criticize a specific fighting style, especially without having practiced it fully for many years, is arrogant and hard-headed.
illumined1 4 years ago 2
agreed there is no kicking or striking in aikido and you dont wear a haa (black pants that look like skirt) there is simply evading atacks
locootto 4 years ago
No kicking or striking in Aikido? One word - atemi.
The pantaloons are generally worn by yudansha (although some organisation wear them earlier). Perhaps some don't wear them at all.
hairyMuppet 4 years ago
atemis are not meant to be a strike to injure, just to distract your opponent so you can easilier get your technice right, so still there are no direct strikes or kicks in aikido
locootto 4 years ago
Atemis may not be meant to inflict injures but still if you do follow though on a atemi you can and probaly will inflict some kind of injure. Atemis isn't strikes today but sometime in history they were strikes meant to cause pain and/or injures.
TheRealPilsken 4 years ago
It might be splitting hairs, but I would tend to disagree. An atemi with no focus behind it (e.g. it will not land) would simply be ignored by an aggressor.
To be effective (IMHO) the atemi must be good enough to make the aggressor defend themselves/focus on it.
Perhaps if one has perfect technique atemi isn't even required, but lesser mortals like me still need to use it.
hairyMuppet 4 years ago
I agree with you when it comes to practice, but in the street, if you're going to try to attempt a technique (why, I don't know), it's always easier to do it when you've pealed the attacker(s) nose back.
whitt088 4 years ago
there is no karate fighter in this vid, this is a demonstration, the thing that proves karate is better is that you never see an aikido student or master fight a karate fighter, NEVER. and for people to say aikido is for fighting or could kick ass, is funny, that is against aikido itself to say that. plus it's believing in something there is no proof of. aikido is the santa clause of the martial arts.
hmsrecordings 4 years ago
Do you think style is what makes a martial art superior than any others? The individual is the one that is the better fighter, not his or her style that thet follow.
6arcsn1sky 4 years ago
That's just a cover up for some martial arts not only being less effective than others, but COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE in reality fighting situations. Aikido's probably fun in a dojo, but its not fun when youre fighting someone and get knocked spark out
Guyman1337 4 years ago
Well, if that is the case, then a person has been training in a "McDojo."
6arcsn1sky 4 years ago
Why then does it have the highest mortality rate in Japan? Ho Ho Ho!
hulker122 4 years ago
If I remeber correctly there is a "aikido style" (called Shodokan Aikido or Tomiki Aikido) that regular use "karate fighers" as ukes in their competionens.
I should mention that this aikido style is genrely frowned upon by "real aikidokans" ;) due to the fact that they go agains O-sensei's wish while holding these competionens
TheRealPilsken 4 years ago
Personally, studying both techniques together would be optimal. Its wise to learn both a striking art and a grappling discipline.
taekwonski 4 years ago
Nice choreography, but no "Aikido vs Karate". The guy who kicks wants to be thrown.

aikido kicks ass.
Gerbilmeister 4 years ago
Fake completely. That is not karate and this demonstration is for children or uneducated people.
DreamEater390 4 years ago
Ultra staged. Giving high kicks when the other guy is at floor level makes you think there is a vision problem with the karate fighter. It is a nice demo though just misrepresented with the title. Makes you expect something different.
anaandjorge 4 years ago
Yes because this is a genuine and not planned representation of a striking martial art versus Aikido.
cough
AdeyAdey 4 years ago
No, it isn`t. If it was, the Aikido guy would be knocked out.

You cant claim to be representing Karate when you are attaking in an Aikido style. Its like playing chess with yourself. This is a "Straw-Man" demonstration.
