1st generation and second generation is a way of classifying models for apple products

iPod 1G < iPod 2G < iPod 3g < iPod 4g < etc...

the greater the generation the latest model u have....how to figure out which one you have?

ipod touch 1g is the fattest ipod touch available and has no volume rocker while on the other hand ipod touch 2g & 3g are very similar and are slim and hav a volume rocker...dont knw how to exactly classify 3g but i think if ur ipod came with 3.1.2 os then its 3g

yup but i suggest u update to 3.1.3 - jailbreaking is more easier in OS 3.0 + line series compared to 2.0

yea u hav to clck the update button again not the restore button....if u click restore ull loose all ur contents but if u click update it'll update ur existing software without wiping out ur media content on ur ipod such as music videos n etc...

download a freeware software known as 'sharepod' it will help back up ur library from ur ipod to pc =) then u can update widout ny tension

if u hav 3.0 firmware then jus click restore/update if lower then yes u'll need to downgrade itunes

Note: after u uninstall itunes 9, delete the itunes folder from ur my music or itunes 8 wont start up

- u can download the older versions from filehippo

don't jailbreak 3.1...there were some problems with the winterboard app and i think i'm one of the unlucky ones...on my iTouch 1G, one of the keys stopped working. so i'd advise you to stay on 3.0, but if u updated to 3.1 and jailbroke already, good luck to you, and hope nothing happens to your device.

yes u can use itunes 9, if u plan to jailbreak then stick with firmware 3.0 if u want legit updated firmware then update to 3.0 then click check for updates and update to 3.1

ok, ive done everything accordingly but when i go to restore the firmware i get an error. The action i requested "restore3.0" cannot occur because the firmware is not compatible. You're help would be lovely. This seems to be a reoccurring problem with ppl.

did u download the latest version of itunes?

try putting it in dfu mode...u can do that by holding down the home button and power button for 20 sec...do not release till u get this screen showing u usb cable and some itunes logo, then try restoring
