Amazing for a 120-year-old organ. The 32' Contre Bombarde is simply stunning with the right earphones (the Klipsch X10is are amazing) or speakers. This organ's technician writes that he tried to uncover the reason this organ is so special and concluded that the space it is in is as special as the pipes, the voicings, and everything else. Remarkably, the bellows are still leak-free despite the age. But Brooks warns that the organ really does need some major work. This recording dates from 2008.
Wonderful sound...and of course, superb playing. I think the tempi are perfect...the Menuet just dances! Yes, I agree: this is one of the world's great organs.
Since I play a four manual instrument in a large Gothic Cathedral, I understand how one needs to play in a large acoustic environment like Saint Ouen. No one wants to hear only a mush of sound, except for the music of Messiaen, which is another case. Since I know this suite from memory, so I also do know about the tempo markings, which have been blatantly ignored in the Introduction. Finally, the Tocatta must be able to speak reasonably clearly in the building.
Yes toccata - meaning to touch - often a piece to demonstrate technique and ability, and even at a slower tempo, the sixteenth notes are still moving along at quite a reasonable pace.
@Sathrandur Ah you say you play in a large Gothic Cathedral? Just curious what does it sound like using the full organ with a 32' bombarde playing a song like this? Because I went to a recital/concert for the organ, and I was quite surprised how mushed together the sound was, nothing was clear....
@poopingeneral Even with 32' Bombardes and even with a solo tuba added the balance between direct sound and reverberation can be balanced, even further down the cathedral. The pace merely need not be taken too fast. In a building with little or no reverberation the tempo would be completely acceptable. But to be musical always comes first.
That's a fantastic performance. Gerard Brooks has got everything right here. But can you go wrong on this organ? I don't think so.......................
Breathtaking performance, absolutely sublime! Extraordinary and exceptional recording. Superb organ - great acoustics. In my opinion best Cavaille-Coll ever built.
this has to be one of the mightiest organs ever built. I thought that St. Sulpice had an amazing organ, but it now seems that St. Ouen has taken that place.
How inspired are these noble sounds, forever resplendent in their glorious surroundings, as if to draw us toward the higher realms of music, art and the divine nature of Cavaille-Coll reeds, pedals, soaring tonalities and magnificent resonance! The ambiance captivates, enthralls and guides us through memorable halls of splendor, grace and agility. Many thanks, Raphael!
you are so right ... first thing I had to do: put in on my favourite list. This is one of the most beautiful recordings I know. Even if the organ is not that mighty a recording in Dudelange is also very interesting ...

Most of that was played too fast. The introduction and Menuet especially. A beautiful instrument however.
Sathrandur 1 year ago
@Sathrandur
Don't be so didactic!
You may think it's too fast; I think it's just right. Any slower and the Menuet would be stodgy.
So there!
