I wouldn't say it's advancement or regression, merely that music has always taken many very different forms. there's been refined, long, emotive music for years and so too have there been raw, fast paced simplistic (from a technical point of view) tunes.

Doesn't matter one bit, it's all music because it uses instruments of one kind or another to express something, it's just just a case of preference and taste.
